Buddhism, Sex & Education

The bartender that wore orange robes

Few years ago I came across something that may seem relatively unique to us Sri Lankans, a bar owned and run by a monk. Deviant as I am, I was overjoyed by the fact this is going to make some people’s minds explode. So I rushed in to see what the whole hype is about, I mean typically bars are a place to hang-out and let loose. Why would people want to drink in front of a judgmental monk???

I was in for awkward self-revelation, it turned out that I was the judgmental one. These monks weren’t your stereotypical, shallow, uneducated and extreme TV personas that you see in the news every day. They were some amazing individuals, who had noticed that people were more interested in philosophical conversations once they had their bellies filled with a little rum. They wanted to use that to reach those who didn’t like the atmospheres of modern temples. They wanted people to enjoy the philosophy part of Buddhism minus the outdated and boring rituals. All around the bar monks were pouring drinks and sitting with people talking about the little things in life.

There was one question I wanted to ask them. “How do you deal with Buddhist fanatics who clearly would see this place shut down?” … To which the bartender replied “We get death threats every day, but we are true practitioners of Buddhism trying to spread its philosophy. I hope the fanatics who threaten us come and learn Buddhism from us one day”

A mother and her son

Me too movement, Mediocre sex education and Porn have many people deluded that we humans understand sexual relationships and boundaries. Ever since I started to explore my own sexuality I have come across some mind blogging stories and people that continuously changed my view. But two years ago one of my teachers shared a story that humbled my understanding of what is right and wrong when it comes to sexual relationships.

She told us that one of her clients came in one day and was sitting in the bench and looking at her not saying a single word. Then after 15 min. of silence finally said I think my mother is abusing my brother. Our teacher then asked her why she believes this to be true, after another few minutes of silence she finally finds the courage to tell the whole story.

It turned out to be that her brother was disabled and on a wheel chair, he was 15, just underage for giving consent to sex (according to the country he was residing in) and his disability made it impossible for him to masturbate or use a toy by himself. He didn’t have any partner of his age that would help him in his needs and it’s not like there is an available service that allows such people to enjoy earthly pleasures. So was the mother wrong for understanding her Child’s need? Or are we wrong for not giving a damn about the people we exclude when we write our universal laws of conduct?

The monk who tried to teach sex

Few weeks back our great Island was in the greatest turmoil that the country has ever seen. A monk had appeared on TV to appeal to the government to stop distribution of a provocative Sex-Ed book. What was so provocative in the book? It had mentioned appearance of secondary sexual characteristics as a dialog between kids. He was convinced that Sex-Ed should only be taught from mother to daughter.

For the first time in my life I actually felt sorry for a monk. He had attempted at his chance to be a national hero like many monks before him. He had some idea (however deluded it may seem) how sex should be taught and he raised his concern. Like the many monks before him who took center stage to save the nation from eternal damnation. He wanted people to panic. He wanted his version of Buddhist understanding to prevail over everyone else.

He thought his holy books and shared experience with his devotees was supreme to the educators, social workers, health experts and researchers in multiple countries. Half of the nation laughed at him for not being educated in Sex-Ed, something that was just introduced. Next day everything was back to normal, the sexually well versed people of our nation lost their minds seeing an inner thigh of a dancer and started to call her a whore.

Kasun Kamaladasa: I think, you are writing things you do not know. How ever, with the lack of empathy (a christian word, Buddhist say every one be happy etc., ) to another religion. You should find the Orange colour (colour worn/liked by female children) is the colour of Gay people. Buddhist Bhikkus wear variations of Yellow and some times Brownish robes.
I hear, there there is Evangelical Christian missionaries who wants to talk about Buddhism in their terms because, they can not understand some parts of Buddhism as they believe only in the Material world. What Buddhism says is that every where it is the Quantum world.
With respect to sex education. We, about half a century ago learned about Rat/Bird reproductory systems and the personal hygiene. I do not know what the sex education book you mention teach about. If the young people need to learn about HIV-AIDS they do not need to show human body parts. That can be taught separately. If the book teaches about the safe sex, /Condom use etc, that is not proper. Sri Lankans and Asians are not monkies who live still on trees. We had a culture, our children were civilized. I heard, sex education in the western society made children inquisitive about engaging in sex and that led to Teenage pregnancies, promiscuity and many more problems.
I am wondering whether you are living overseas and do not know anything about sri Lankan education and the society. If your education was in an International school, most probably, you are out of touch with the reality and you do not know about anything you are talking about.

Gay sex practices with CHILD monks in many temples across the country is common today. Lately what came out was, some CHILD monks were infected with aids. Was that through the water they consume or self, they became HIV patients ?-

Rajaakshe mafia fertilizes criminal monks and high criminals in this country being behind the votes they could grab from them. Majority of young crowds are misled by social media videos that have been run by IRAJ or the like abusive men. Rajakshe thugs should be raw burnt down for the deliberate crimes they continue in this country be it with drug trafficking or other cimrinal areas.

So long their campaigns are funded by DRUG KIN PINS such KUDU DUMINDA and KUDU lanza, Rajakashes would not care about the harm being done by their total ignorance. I have no doubt, the same genetics would be inthe blood flowing the vessels of Gotabaya. I normally beleive if even low educated man lived on the west could introduce better systems to their own country men, there you dont need necessarily be degree holders, but I doubt, if RAJAPKSHES could do it.

ONLY thing we expect incumbent to do is PUT the law above anything else, let it serve equally regardelss of status, race and religion. Be it GMOA or others .. if caught guilty shold be HACKED to death on the spot.
Be it YOUNG rajapakshe men or others, ifcaught guilty with murder, they should be BEHEADED
Be it brother s wife SHIRANTHI or others found guilty, to the manner they practise in south corea should be sent to jail.
If GOTABAYA WOULD do so, I will join him strenghtheniing his hand for abetter srilanka.

        Dear Kamaladasa,

To tell you Germany’s garbage collectors are much more qualified than Rajapakshes and his men in parliament today. If people would give them 2/3 in next general elections, there will be no room any respectful and dignified people in that society.
Chinese would like Rajapakshes being leaders for thei selfish gains, but we will surely end up as Angolians and other nations, that today are made eternal debtors to china.

Yesterday I happened to leave one plastic box with other garbage by mistake – one of them gave me a lession about recycling of plastic in general etc, so that I became speechless. How could such men be that knowledgeble while our people down their in SL dont know the basics about human body.

It is the media in developed countries make the people very much aware about so many things. There are lot more writers that pass the message to the average in a langauge they could get them easily. I know it by myself, those who studied “arts” for their Alevels in SL have no idea about many things, not even human hygiene.
There are not even appropriate TV programs in numbers that edcuate the people yet today.
That is why many lag with health problems in entire developing countries. I have been dealing with all age groups for my job and I get to know so many things over here. I also studied in Germany that is why my English is not good as that of our Mr Perfectionist Mr SINHALA Man.

        Dr.Kasun,
One of the most popular brands of Rum in India is “Old Monk”. Nobody complains.
Depending on monks for sex education is like asking blind men about elephants.

        Dear Natalie,
        .
Please make your comments that much longer to make it simpler for us to work out what you are referring back to. After seeing your comment on numerous occasions for the past three days I realised that the words in quotes were from the second paragraph of Kasun’s main article.
        .
I wasted quite a bit of time locating the words, and even now, I’ve resisted the impulse to give it a green thumbs up. It’s been kept “naked” by everybody, perhaps (like me) not sure whether you approve of Kasun, or not.
        .
I usually avoid irony, sarcasm and overly subtle references in my comments. Ever fewer Sri Lankan readers seem to have received training in reading with that level of sophistication.

      Kasun & JD,
You both are wrong. Kasun certainly don’t understand the the meaning of monk-hood in terms of Buddhism while JD is talking about post British S/B culture; not the S/B culture that existed thousands years prior to the current “civilized” system introduced by British. In old days, before women entered into the school education & the open job market competing with men, girls got married as soon as they passed puberty. I have observed such practices quite often throughout the island just forty years ago. Among native Lankans (veddas) who live in open quarters, secrecy is in sex by adults is not a concern at all.

Trying to hide sex from children is a “childish” effort. The better option is to change our mentality and treat sex the same way as healthy food practices – part of personal hygiene. Those monks (specialized TV stars like Medagoda Abayatissa business monk) who speak against sex education are non other than actors paid by politicians & TV.

Kasun is absolutely wrong to approve Buddhist monks running an alcohol bar. Even if Buddhism can abandon its pessimistic view (in my opinion, it should), monks still don’t get the right to behave like laymen; either they must abandon the monk-hood or the laymen/worldly practices. That is b’cos, irrespective of the general philosophy of life, once given up, engaging in same practices has to be treated as nothing but cheating! They must live off begging!

I think you all three are wrong (JD, Kamaldasa, DP).

Lanken kind of monkhood is made to hoodwink the EASY targets. This has been a long trick being played by politicians. Monks are like BUFFALOEs being placed before the bullcarts. Drivers are the politicians. Pleaes think about this. and add your thoughts.

Just imagine, I as one who live in Europe but travel to motherland very often, at least to see the monument of the parents and tank the energies. Whenever I come and leave, I feel, that many of the Hamudurwos of the day are cheaters. When they come to BANA preachings, most of them make every effort to be busy with gossips and filthy loads in Sinhala.
Be you meet them in buses, on the roads, temples, or airports most of them are not real.
Once I was heading to SL, with my transit in Doha; there I happened to see a prominent monk – waited as we did in the waiting lounge for our srilanken UL flight. A woman who looked to be not MODA but in good dress was standing aside, with her passport in her hand, but this woman was travelling with that hamuduruwo….. as I heard from her. Later while only I understood, this hamuduruwo has a life similar to that of a buddhist lay person. But this was seen public. As passengers were called for board in, Hamudurow was given the priority with the woman followed him. This is today s srilanka. But our PUNNAKKU eating buddhist adherents made rubber like movements before this monk. I was only obsering and thinking ” what happened to lanken monk hood”:

This was not the single incident captured my eyes, over the years, I notice that the respect and dignity safeguarded by past monks are gone today. ALl because of the consumption of materials. See, why should MONKs enjoy with SMART phones on the costs of others today ?

          Ms M,
You are not contradicting any of the three. With respect to Kasun’s point, you are only providing more facts while your conclusion support my opinion that monks who indulge in secular practices are nothing but cheaters. At the same time you are not disagreeing with JD’s cultural argument which I oppose on the ground that it has no factual base. Monks start break disciplinary code set out by Buddha himself during his own life time. Once getting so frustrated, Buddha went away to “Parileiya” forest. Then, when he died, some said to have expressed relief from strict discipline enforced by the Buddha prompting the first Sangha seminar (sangayana). In other words, things were not so beautiful even in the so-called “Good old days”!

I have several questions, those who make a big voice on a book which has been produced by a recognized committee, why not they criticise the child molestation in temples today ?

These men hidden behind BODY coverings are religious ? or the one who live on the costs of others ?

Maedagoda Cheevaradaria to lead this nation, what kind of model principles he brings with. Nothing but his backlicking nature to Rajapakshes. I think these Rajakshes should be taught that they should leave space to others too… and this country should NOT be their pvt property.

We had great politicians like Mrs B, who were then held like Queen in SL, but we also have barbarians such as Mahinda, …. To that time, in my younger age, Mrs B was respected by us for her real good naturedness. Today, many respect rascal Mainda for his facistism. His talkativeness, his state looting tactics. Or th elike. Who on earth would ever respect the kind of guys ? That looted the state to the core. Just abusing and overestimating he further tries to score more. Are people that stupid ?

I think it is really primitive the manner sinhalaya yet today, call for a big ceremony once their young girls just start with their first mensuration event. Instead of taking time and leave them some more explanation about being an adult woman, try to make the event an issue sending the lads around that the girl became a big girl is beyond ethics and morals.
I think even today, rural villagers continue the kind of family fests. I come from South but no longer living in th ecountry. However my far distant relatives once invited me for such a ceremony. This is to me no better with the tribal rituals being celebrated in Ethiopia. Glitoris circumscion is common to ethiopian and other women in that part of the world. Once I met a student who worked on his thesis focusing on such female discrimination in Africa. I dont think today Ethiopians wouuld respect the kind of far inhuman activities, but like it is th ecase in SL with ” big girl cereomonies” some villagers do conitnue them in african even today.

They only talk about the change of VOICE; beard in young boys, but never take time to speak about their changes with their genitals. If females to be celebrated their first mensuration and young boys not to do so I find very strange. This has lot to do with the place given to male in the society. We talk high about our people, but not many respect females in the country yet today. Male dominated countries cant bring us forward. I dont think that females are given chances to enter in any kind of job areas yet today, even if Vietnam, Thai or the like do allow even bus drivers and pilots be the women.

      …Dear Kasun,

thanks for the article. I really appreciate you the kind of writers, that somehow find time enough to write such articles. More of them can surely improve the awareness of the people in our motherland. Lot more articles and videos are really in need on various topics. Lanken TVs seem to have no space for TALK shows by which they could achieve lot more. They aer not yet open enough to train the public for openess. That YATHARUPA a proagram which was unique was condemned by the people since astrologists, palmists and other Kattadiyas and their supporters who are the dominating fraction of the society stood against.

As Mr Sinhala Man as a proactivist living in SL recognizes you as a medical doc, I think I have a good question to you. I dont live in SL, but hearing the calamity on Dr Sapi, I became speechless.

Please tell us the CT readership that Dr Sapi SAGA on his alleged involvment in turning women infertile – could ever be possible in an OP room down there ? Is that the level of surgery rooms, then, we need to report it to UNHRC during next session. We on the west, still criticise how they held racial experiments on people in nuremberg trials.

Why the kind of monks, inlcuding the above seen in the picture went after it so easily ? I know it by mself, that a panel work on a surgery ( in cesarean surgeries). No time would be permitted to enjoy but to act promtly is their nature in such surgeries. And if anyone would think a doc would enjoy keep pressing the falopian tubes of the patients, all others would not act deaf and dumb. It is highly impossible. But lanken society is made to believe whatever being evasively accepted. … viewers are made born fools no matter what kind of education they may have obtained.

      to be contd.

It is well-known around the world, and indeed in the resplendent isle, that places of religious worship where religious authorities reside, are rife with child sexual abuse, where young followers entering the order are sodomised by the elder members and sworn to silence on the threat of dire consequences. They too, engage in similar abuse when its their turn to call the shots. However, on the outside, they hypocritically preach piety and abstention, hoping to fool their devout followers perpetually with various mumo-jumbo.

Please get your information about the red robe wraped man in the picture above a njumber one mudalali… under criminal network of Rajapakshe. He interferes anything and everyhting, as if he may have the right to do so, not leaving the due to the lay people and authorties. He criticises the book that came up through long discussions held with experts in that field. How dare a man in robe to behave so is the quesiton of th eday, however, rotten society would not seem to see it right easily.

Sex education is a must with rapidly increase in rape, and sex crimes rates in the country today. Mothers are being raped by YOUNG boys these days within their homes: Fathers rape their own daughters and produce children that have no future. Most fo these are reported in the families that the chidlren grow up wihtout mother s care. Mothers have been sold out to DUBAI, ISHRAEL, KOREA and the like countries. Those mothers too enjoy their lives rather than earnign their lviing, … number one exmpale is that Kumari akka… who came into being the spot light of gallery in srilanka SOCIAL media.

Even married men in middle age, loudly say, that he has no whatsoever knowledge about the mensuration of own wife. Telling it public, as a middle age mancould harm for his age in europe, but in srilanka, they dont take it serious, because almost not knowing things make them heros in rascals dominated abusive culture.

Hamudurows dont talk about their child abuses in Temples yet today, they do lot more sex crimes almost every temple from seniors to young. Now temples have turned out to be HOMEs of sex practises. Would you think those safron thugs led by BBS behave real good monks within nights at their temples ? I could not realize this until I last went to Kelaniya temple premises and was compelled to notice how YOUNG monks flirt the young women there. But further callignn the temple to be a place that could bless you all… the mythos guid the and mislead the nation round the clock.

      Lasantha,
You are correct. However, unlike among Buddhists, Christian world is now openly discussing this problem. Several powerful priests had to go to jail as a result. Hypocrisy is prevalent only among Buddhists. That is b’cos politics provides them easy refuge.

      Lasantha Pethiyagoda,

“It is well-known around the world, and indeed in the resplendent isle, that places of religious worship where religious authorities reside, are rife with child sexual abuse, where young followers entering the order are sodomised by the elder members and sworn to silence on the threat of dire consequences.“

Yes. This is part of the Monk Training tradition. After they “graduate” , they become the 3rd Gem of the Triple Gem, and the imbeciles prostrate to them, required by the tradition after the monks hijacked the Dhamma, the Philosophy. The first 6 Kings and the subjects did fine, before the Monk tradition was established in Lanka.

The Monk tradition is so firmly established, the imbeciles continuing to prostrate to these monks, that Gotabaya too is prostrating, to go along, with the deception, pretend, whether or not they believe in the elusive Nibbana, extinction .

Monk Somarama, after shooting prostrating SWRD, wanted to be saved from Hell-Fire, not the elusive Nibbana.

The same problem was happening in Tibet, The problem was solved and resolved by the Chinese.

Can somebody ask for Chinese help to solve the problem here?

Amarasiri, It can be solved easy.1.Widen their mouths from ear to ear.
2, Use a short handled axe on them.

I never cease to marvel at how we mere mortals get into a right-old tizz at the mention of sex-education. We – homo sapiens – are the most successful species that inhabit this earth. Starting from 2 a few thousand years ago we have now reached 7 billion and counting. I would dare say that we know a thing or two about procreating. Damn, we are now into ‘recreational sex’ – you know, a sort of a pastime sport. Many young people now say that copulating is just like enjoying a cup of tea. In fact it is now time to update the old and dated Karma Sutra. It seems a bit kinky for priests to want to join the fun, but they have been at it for years. The truth is that for all their preaching and piety many of them have been getting a lot of action themselves behind closed doors. In fact during a conversation some time ago with a young lady who had slept with a priest, she said it was quite surreal having an agent of god come in her. I say that most young people find it a bit intrusive that an adult or older person would want to guide them through what was a basic human instinct – only second to potty training. In my old age, I would venture to observe that young people are well able to manage this difficult subject without help. Just let the young people get on with it!

Abhayatissa is not a monk even though he wears robe.

Bandaranayaka was the man who completely destroyed community of the monk in Ceylon by that time.
He politicized Buddha Sasana in Ceylon.
Some foolish monks were infatuated with that idea and went to his political stage.

In the present Mahinda is the second man who completely made dark cloud in Sri lankan Buddha Sasana.

Abhayatissa does not know about anything even though he says he is the professor in Jayawardhanapura University.
Mahinda gave that title and job for Abhayatissa.

Sex is completely prohibited for monks.
This stupid man talks about sex in public.

How dare you to slander a well respected scholar like Venerable Prof. Medagoda Abhyatissa Thero?
To people like you, Buddhist monks who support Mahinda are not Buddhist monks, but the saffron-robed men who support the slave government are real monks???
What do you know about Buddhist monks?
You should first understand the difference between engaging in politics and expressing one’s views on political and socio-economic factors.
What kind of stupidity you find in Venerable Thero talking about a well planned attempt to destroy our children?
And who says Buddhist monks cannot speak up against the ruination to our Sinhalese Buddhist society?
Throughout our history, Buddhist monks have raised their voices against all types of injustices, forcible conversions and sickening attempts to devalue our cultural norms and values, in addition to advice rulers as and when it is necessary.
Venerable Abhayatissa Thero has raised a valid point with regard to the “Hathe Ape Potha” which is too much for Grade-7 children, based on Sri Lankan terms.
For an example; it has given 11-12 year old school girls and boys a lengthy account of how to make sex to one’s own self, which could dissipate child’s innocence and make him/her an addict, which seems to be the motive.
The most dangerous impact of the “Hathe Ape Potha” is that, it has given a wrong message to the society that a 12 year old child is fit to have sex.
That may be the reason for the unbelievable increase in underage child-rape throughout the country for the past years making innocent children easy targets to adult sex maniacs.
Overall, the country should be indebted to Venerable Prof. Abhayatissa Thero for having the guts to talk about this sensitive matter, as the most vulnerable are the children from majority Sinhalese Buddhist families!!!

      [Edited out]
But ridiculously enough these ballige puthas are said to have their own supermarkets being in robes ho wcome ? They just enter monkhood leaving everyhting but in our fool of pardise, they enjoy it as nowhere on this planet. Very lately, I met myself up one another buddhist monk who just arrived in ROME. I did not have even few minutes to talk to him. He looked as if he came to please his men in Europe. I dont think I have much good to share about SRILANKEN monks living in Europe.

There are lot more in the society, yet today respect the kind ill fated buggers entered to MONKHOOD in order to destroy it.

Prof Title are awareded to them for no reason. These men have not the basic knowledge about anything. Sex education is a much regardless of where you are. More you know much better it wll be in shaping up the life.
That is common to everyone. Those who hide and hit make real problems to families and the society. These men hidden behind the SIVURU, are doing nothing better to that of sex criminals in our home country.
I will bet you for 5000 dollars, if you would interview young monks, over 90% them have been either molested as child or being part of sodomies.
BBS and their supporter monks are high criminals. They proved it not once several dozens of times.

I am born buddhist, now I dont respect srilanken monk as a whole. Shame go to our Rajakshe men, that raped budhist clergy for their poltiical survival.

Now the man who fought diehard against lanken type of corruption is being attacked by RAJAPAKSHE led animals that once demolished the parliament. Entire world as we heard thought ” srilankens in general are unethical uncultured animals”. All these are forogtten by local media today.

You are not a Buddhist definitely. Your comment is full of malice.
Many non-Buddhists pose as Buddhists and defame Maha Sangha to give a wrong impression that Buddhists are against them.
What you say about 90% of young monks are either molested or being part of sodomies is a blatant lie.
Incident-wise, there were a very few, I would say less than 20 such incidents for the entirety of the Buddhist history which goes back to 2300 years. The perpetrators of such cases have been punished according to the law.
You are not a Buddhist as there is no reason for a Buddhist to distort the truth.

          Champa,
          .
Please come with facts. Today we cant deny that easily. Please talk to your temples and get back to us again

You always support any evil makers may well be that is the style you have been familiar with. But we know it very well. that over 90% living in temple are caught by senior gay monks.

One of my brothers said to me there, while waiting for their school bus, one senior monk approached to him and put his fingers in his short… the child was then 12 years.

One another I got to know in Pera, shared us how he was touched by one another senior MONK after Daham pasal session was over

I then spoke to many each time travelling to lanka and gathered so much of info to prove the opinion. Almost every child monk is sofar caught by child molestation in that country.
So what talks about girl chidren ? This is why SEX education is of highly importance right athi this critical juncture of our country.

You guys just to deny it not having donw your home work is beyond all ethics. Please instead help the authoirites even if your WIMAL weerwanse would be a sex criminals. For me, if my parents would go wrong, I stood against them. I was like so poisonous to them then
That is my nature from childhood on. I have succeeded very many rights for the chhildren. I will continue to help them lot more in the future.

    Welcome, Medical Doctor, Kasun Kamaladasa,
    .
Your articles are always interesting and thought-provoking. This is no exception. Let the other comments come in and then I’ll possibly say more.
    .
Sexuality is always part of us. However old we are, it fascinates us, but like the boy in the wheel-chair, we cannot perform after a certain age!
    .
One also has to earn one’s living. Mine has been through teaching this alien language. So, may I quietly point out that in two places you have left out that thing called the “indefinite article”.
    .
“Few years ago”, used twice by you, ought to have been “A few years ago”. It’ll be more effective for me to provide a link than try to explain myself:
    .
    https://www.grammarly.com/blog/few-a-few/
    .
About “Grammarly” – it’s probably very good, certainly too expensive for an individual anywhere in the world. I’ve installed the free version in my browser, from whence it spreads, I know not where. But it’s not a virus. It sometimes clashes with other spell checks, but this is more than a mere spell check.
    .
How boring my comment, compared with your exciting article!

      Sinhala Man…

I found your bit more interesting ….

I don’t know which Diaspora you are in. But most of them have access to that Blue Tablet through the National Health Service.

All you got to do is find a friendly caring GP and tell him your problem .
I am sure he will write a prescription so you don’t have to fork out $ 10 a pop.

        Dear K.A. Sumanasekera,
        .
I know that you make a lot of comments, like Amarasiri and Native Vedda. All three of you take a definite line on political issues. There’s nothing wrong with that.
        .
I have no sympathy with your politics, which are racist, but you have the right to do so, although many readers feel that you have a paymaster. As such, I have little personal respect for you. However, everybody needs a paid job, if not how to live? So, I don’t condemn you on that score. If you look at what I have said about Champa, you will see a significant difference. I disagree with her line of thinking, but I have personal respect for her, because she is no paid lackey. She writes because of personal belief. She (like many other regular readers), knows that my real name is Panini Edirisinhe. She has personal respect for me, but we disagree on perspectives. We both try to get facts right.
        .
So get this fact right. I belong to no “Diaspora”. I live in Sri Lanka on a small government pension. I have never been outside Asia.
        .
All that has been seriously said.
        .
Viagra – that’s light-hearted stuff, but I have no time for banter on that right now. As you know the tablet comes in at Rs 50/= each for 100 mg or whatever strength, and at less for the half dose. Various Indian brand names. Pharmacies here do a roaring trade, asking for no prescription. Well known facts.
        .
Never double dose yourself like the tall old ex-UNP minister for whom we have so little respect!
        .

        Champawathiyo,,
dont worry about your spelling mistakes, you are well at, very experienced having widened your legs to Rajapakshes and their kith and kin forever. That Wimalaya, day light murderer has infected you as no other did it .

By the way, Eagle eye and You should be the ones to have promoted Rajakashe mafia but putting them in a beautiful bottles as old wines are served as top ones using other lables.

Lanken situation has reached to stalemate situations, so not many of us would be able to help them with an inch of progress. Talk to your family circles or your neigbours, that will reveal you a lot.
Just talk to neighoubrs and ask them why they go after lankens kind of Pingutharaya monks, even if we know that temples are made SODOMY houses by date.

Monkhood in SL today is more or less lke an another living form of hypocracy. These men covered with safron robes are very lazy for their own living and like parasites. I am talking not about all bu tover 80% of them.

I think Champa is hired by Rajapakshes.

This we understood in that 52 black FAKE govt period.

To that time, Champa did notknow what to talk. She was over raped by Rajapakhe goons over the years. As rape victims would not be recovered, she has been misused.

          Dear Leelagemalli,
          .
I can’t write much; must get some sleep to be up early enough to actually get out of the house tomorrow!
          .
This will surprise you. Champa and I are friends. and I never say nasty things to her. I know that her stand on many issues is racist – I tell her that. Actually, none of her comments indicates her gender clearly, but I go along with the generally accepted notion.
          .
Many Sinhalese fear for the future of their language, culture and identity. Champa is concerned about them, but she shouldn’t adopt some of the stances that she does. She isn’t a blind supporter of any political party. I give ear to all that says, and try to understand without agreeing..

        Dear Champa,
        .
        I’m sure that I also
carelessly interchange spellings for verbs and nouns the way you say that you did. When you saw it again, you knew that you had made a “mistake, and would have corrected it if possible.
        .
Kasun couldn’t have done that, since he says, “I didn’t know this was actually a mistake”. So, his was an error, and it had to be pointed out. I did so because by now I know him quite well from his articles. I expected him to take it in good spirit, and indeed that is the only way it can be put right.
        .
I don’t point out every error that I see. Some are pretty confusing for anyone, and seem inevitable now:
        .
        http://www.future-perfect.co.uk/grammar-tip/is-it-license-or-licence/
        .
Any teacher has to strike a balance between encouraging fluency, and balancing that versus the need for correctness.
        .
Kasun, you are a fantastic guy! Yes, I’ll continue to draw your attention to slips, particularly when, as in that instance, there is a useful distinction in meaning.
        .
Let me deal tomorrow with a very common error that I’ve noticed with reference to “lead”. This can get tedious and annoying if carried too far!
        .
I think that I’ll also have to do some explaining to Leelagemalli!
        .
More urgently, “CONCERNED SRILANKEN” has to be addressed towards the bottom of comments on this wonderful article:
        .

          Mr Sinhala Man,

          what matter is the numbers/percentages.

Unfortunately, the kind of buddhist monks are not even 5% in current day srilanka.

I know this monk very well. I love the kind of monks. The kind of monks were then invited for YATHARUP TV discussion rounds.

Anyways, SIDU teledrama (daily telcasting) is allowed in LANKEN TV but Yatharupa was rejected. That is the factual information about CURRENT srilanka.

Not even SMART phone holders ( 10% of the society) seem to be vocal on the kind of topics. Only wayrout is through proper awareness programs

European TV channels hold TALKSHOWs on daily basis. They invite poor families or any one into such talk shows so that the public be well aware about the living conditions and people’s day today problems.

In contrary to developed world, our TV channel hang on with TELEDRAMAs and astro predication, no matter people would fall from frying pan to firm in terms of their general knowledge levels.

            Dear Leelagemalli,
            .
            Thanks
for many kind references to me, etc.
            .
However, when you claim that only 5% of monks are virtuous, like Galkande Dhammananda, aren’t you making an unsubstantiated statement. Dhammananda is a useful example for me to quote because he’s articulate in many languages, and cannot be dismissed by any critic as a simpleton.
            .
There may well be many simpler, less sophisticated, quieter monks whom we never hear of. In any case, not one of us is perfect, so I feel that we generalise too much.
            .
Gnanasara, and now Ampitiye Sumane are really horrible, and no doubt they have more followers than is obvious at first sight. Sometimes even we may miss the guarded support given to them. For example, there is a new ninth floor swimming pool near my Maharagama house. Very clean. I find it a pleasant and relaxing hour when I go there. Apart from me, almost all who turn up (after the morning swimming “classes” are over) are aspiring men in their early twenties from State schools.
            .
I can’t really swim non-stop for an hour – never a champion in any case. However, these guys can’t swim at all. We talk a bit. always starting in Sinhala. They like to practice a bit of English with me – from the Uva Province, which they find strange.
            .
One of hem told me that there was “background” to the Ampitiye Sumane slapping. I expressed some reservations about Christian Evangelism, but chose not to get into Socratic mode.

            Dear Leelagemalli,
            .
I have listened to Sajith’s entire speech today, Sunday about 8.00 am in Sri Lanka. Depressing in the extreme.
            .
World Politics: It almost looks as though Donald Trump may reap the benefit of having the mad old Ayatollahs in power in Iran. are they to be pushed out by the people only to see Donald Trump succeed?
            .
Here Sajith dwells on the ridiculous promises made by the UNP and promises the support of the UNP – who got somewhere in the election only owing to the support of the minorities. Passing references at the end regarding reconcilliation, but mostly jingoism in the speech, as though all that matters is the security of the Sinhalese.
            .
Vegetable prices may seem a minor diversion – but underlines the extent to which selfish traders will benefit.
            .
And the people voted for this. This is Democracy. Black despair is what I feel right now. Time for me to die, I could say – but is that a solution for a World out of control?
            ,
I’m sorry; I can’t hold forth anything more cheering!

Amazing story. Kasun Kamaladasa had talked to or most probably some one told him that a Gay bartender to him looked like a Buddhist – monk was serving liquor and was PREACHING Buddhism. This is a typical story Christian westerner. There are old PhD theses from Californian Universities (Women in Buddhism) which they explain the Asian society saying that is the Buddhism. In 1940s they have written books about Militant monks and Asian Buddhism. The most recent books came Cambridge University of England talks about Sinhala – Buddhist, a summary of another PhD thesis, but every thing the books explain is about the Christian/Catholic church. Kasun Kamaladasa’s education did not teach him anything valuable except English which anyone would learn by default once intermingle with English speakers. Forget the numerous Crusades by the Roman Catholic church, even recently, I heard, Vatican had HIV-AID patients and there is a Wikipedia page on their sexual activities all over the world. Anglican church is not secondary. There is a book written about it how the Monastery and nunnery were connected by an underground tunnel and how nuns and monks were used to make love inside the tunnel and how they killed new born babies.
This article is mostly stupidity, ignorance or lack of reading about other religions. and jealousy. This is typical western thinking. They are so arrogant and have lot of superiority complex and they think they are the most advanced. So, they hit the walls but cannot understand.
Kasun show this article to a Bhikku originated in the west to hear what he says. This is not even good for CNN, FOX etc.,

      Dear JD,

My “innocent comment” last night seems now to have necessitated many responses to many people. Some of them are nice people, some not so nice, some are downright nasty and don’t deserve to be treated as humans, is the impression that I have.

It looks as though both Dr Kasun Kamaladasa and I are going to be kept occupied for many hours. If there is one reason for all this, I’d say that it all arises from just one human habit: intellectual laziness (which Gautama would certainly not have approved of) that leads to stereotyping.
      .
I have the impression that Kasun studied Medicine not in the West, but in Russia. I believe that he is a very committed and principled Doctor of Medicine who is working in Sri Lanka. I’m not sure where.

Sinhala Man, Our GURU of CT !!!!

You as a good and hearted writer why not you bring articles based on people’s affinity to myths or why people in ours and india yet today are behind them. Myths can only mislead people. What and how dangerous the teledrama culture can worsen lanken youth etc. I know that house wives, young ladies and men are tightly tied to TV teledramas in today s Sl.

Most of these teledramas telecast daily basis and some of them abuse young boys as child actors. Parents appearantly dont care about the impact on the the child psychology, but let it go for some economic reasons. It is similar to some american parents that train their little kids by forcing them to undergo body building. They treat own little ones as animals. These are modern day child abuses. Europeans in general criticise the kind of child abuse that could lead to personality disorders. Famous singer Michael Jackson to have ended up so immaturely was connected with his abusive childhood. So was the case with many of the famous artists, that lived not upto 50 by age.

There is a daily telecasting teledrama (SIDU) on Derana TV, which I think should rather be banned to the nation because the story is based witchery. How dangerous it would be, if kids start thinking of invisible forces than any visible. Kids should be trained to think broadly. But the kind of TV teledramas could not help with their child growth. If childgrowth would be badly affected within their ages of 3 to 16, according to child psychologists, they would either end up as criminals or unsuccessful personalities.

          Dear Srimal,
          .
          Thanks.
          .
No, I can’t write articles just like that.
I’m fairly knowledgeable and I can make off the cuff comments on a range of subjects. I think that I make too many comments, but I will continue to do so. I don’t think that you can possibly complain that I don’t make enough comments.
          .
On the other hand, I must ask myself whether a comment is necessary; after that, I must be sufficiently relaxed to make a clear and reasonably interesting comment.
          .
As for articles, that is a different matter entirely. Unless I know a subject thoroughly I don’t think that I should write an article. I must make very sure that the article is not strewn with mistakes and inaccuracies. This was my last article. I was disappointed that there were very few responses to it – nothing from you. Perhaps you didn’t know that it was by me:
          .
          https://www.colombotelegraph.com/index.php/some-thomian-pharisees-are-adamant-on-the-need-to-cheat/
          .
Comments are over, but I think that you must now look at it, to understand better what sort of person I am. I cannot write on Michael Jackson, since I don’t listen to that sort of music. Let me give you a link to something that is too long for you to listen to right now, but you could at least listen to the first two minutes – and be a little shocked! The man who wrote it didn’t hear it, because he was deaf, and Kasun can’t do anything about restoring his hearing because he died in 1827!

Srimal, I’m so aware that our T.V. is bad that I almost never see anything of it. So, how can I expose it, unless I masochistically force myself to sit before it, and take notes?
            .
Even the news is almost unwatchable. Inadequate coverage of important items, lots of politicians shouting, and horrible advertisements which may not be resented by many viewers.
            .
Language teaching syllabi must deal with these issues from the earliest classes. I don’t think that it can be done when teaching English as a Second Langauge. This has to be first language work.
            .
More urgent even than that is the balanced teaching of History. Do you know that when bi-lingual teaching was introduced, it was specifically stated that Religion and History must be taught in the “mother tongue”? Reforming Education is a huge job. I very much doubt any politician putting me in charge of monitoring potentially dangerous teaching. The primary fault lies with the voters who cast ballots the way they did on the 17th of November 2019.
            .
Gota had to win, but did it have to be with so many First Preferences? All 34 losing candidates were to blame for not encouraging Preference Voting; all wanted “kathires” for themselves since all deluded themselves that they could “win”.
            .
Did you read this article yourself?
            .

            .
If not, count the number of queries by the 34 candidates even at that stage.
            .
I’m doing what I can; nothing more will be attempted.

            Please start writing
your article on T.V. I promise to read it, and make a comment on it.
            .
The article may not be perfect – nothing in this world ever is perfect. We need more people writing on what they feel passionately about.

              Dear SM,
I am afraid, I am no good at writing such articles. Nor do I live in SL. I will hire someone next days to work with, if my time would allow me to do so. I am very much into science and medical writing.

But I really appreciate your thoughts. If a dozen of senior retired teachers could share the same thoughts, this nation would have taken into right tracks.
There had been one Srilal, I thought he could bring very good COMMENT. He was like a brothher to me, we both discussed a lot about lanken issues prior to 2015. Then he was so angered by SIRISENA et al, not being stuck to his electoin pledges.
I wish I could read his again on this platform. Unfortunately, some have not got time to check the articles/comments as you are upto Mr SM. Lucky you are in your retirement. But I always admire your comments. That you know very well.

Let me call you Sir Sinhala man, if europeans call “Elton Johnes ” so, why not we the srilankens do so to you ?
              – not just flattering but the truth as I feel it towards your messages.I also respect the comments being added by Mr Amarasiri and Mr Native Vedda. They are very clear and filled with respect, dignity and above all with facts.

You ve been living in the country, but I dont. I moved ouut long long ago and stayed back in Europe after my education. I usually travel to SL once a year or sometimes twice a year depending on my focuses on charity work. Not in a big manner, but I can afford to do so, for such a long time now.

After my mother’s demise I see almost everyting dark in my country. Alone the return of evidently proved high criminals as the leaders make me very worrying about the future of our motherland. Even my relatives, questioned me why to oppose Rajapakshes. They only talked about the manner how they eleminated terror within th ecountry. No matter, even if lawlessness would be promoted. Not only in nothern Srilanka, but also in everywhere, people simply dont respect anyone today. Notars do their job for huges portions of bribes being offered to them. I know a dozen or more that have lost their ancestral properties because elderly parents had been cheated to the core in their testaments. One friend of mine shared this to me lately. His father was in his mid 70ties at the time he was forced to finalize his testament in a secret manner. The responsible notar had worked with the cheaters together without any shame. Now that notar repeats, there had been nothing he could do, so long father gave his consent.

Kasun Kamaladasa: If you are a Physician, the best thing is going back to Sri Lanka. I know those who ruined their lives in the North America (both Countries). In the UK too, I hear, there is lack of employment among Physicians. They all prefer to hire their own first. I think middle east like western Doctors more than the coloured skin. After a few years the govt start a dispensary.
We Buddhists do not believe sex education as the Christian culture believes. What we say is control your feelings and behaviour. See Sri Lanka allows uncontrolled access to Face book, WhatsApp and to the computer where they get feelings about sex and they engage in it even before the marriage.

To properly understand human sexuality (and therefore to be able to help young people with understanding how they feel and how people behave each to the other) some understanding of Anthropology is valuable. Abandon all concepts of Civilisation, marriage/partnerships, Society and Religion and go right back in time to when we humans were only slightly more advanced than the Apes from which we evolved, being concerned more with survival than anything else. Survival, food, water, shelter and reproduction were all that counted. If you really think it through from this standpoint and understand how ancient experience hard-wired into modern human brains determines how we react to situations and each other today, suddenly one can make sense of relationships.

Michael Rochestor: Your comment is totally and completely wrong. Your comment is correct if you assumes that every thing is from the material world. Even some western scientists follow it and we Buddhists explain it in a different way (read my comment in this page but else. The western world does not believe the influence of the non-material component in life that is the Mind or the consciousness part. You know western science can not explain the living world completely (compare Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud). Asian philosophy which is the Buddhism explains everything and it says THE MIND IS RESPONSIBLE FOR EVERY THING AND THEN EVERY THING COME INTO PLACE. SRI lANKAN YOUTH NEED TO GO TO FREE ADULT CLASSES NEED TO LEARN ABOUT THE CONSEQUENCES OF THE IRRESPONSIBLE BEHAVIOUR AND HOW KIDS IN THE WEST ARE SCREWED UP AND NEED TO SHOW STATISTICS AND SAMPLE CASE STORIES.

Interesting article for various reasons. Two most sensitive issues are religion and sex. In case of the first(non biological)people are more than willing, to share their thoughts, but when it comes to sex, people find it awkward, embarrassing and try avoiding all together. You trying to relate one to another, will always invite trouble in a country like Lanka with full of hypocrites. My question to them is which came first sex or religion ???. People who believe in a “creator” should remember that the so called higher power did not forget in creating the reproductive system , with a purpose in mind. Little bit of the Zoology I studied beautifully explains the evolution of this system from Amoeba to human. Even animals do have sex with no such education available to them. It is a spontaneous biological function as described by Kasun. I still remember in school, the teacher who was assigned to teach health science , also gave us , some of his distorted personal views, which I realized was absolutely wrong and misleading, only after getting into medical school. I also remember few of my friends as freshers, had good knowledge of anatomy but not the physiology.(sex) Just like religion Lankans will like to keep sex under the carpet , but thank you Kasun for discussing and hope to see more in future.

If we do not provide education then the children are left to learn from porn and other sources, some of which are totally misleading . If a teacher is providing with wrong information (as in my case) what is the chance of religious head (supposedly celibate who never experienced ??) giving the right one ??? Other than the health science teacher(8-9 th grade) I mentioned my initial knowledge on sex was in high school , through cheap local books, most of which were not anywhere close to reality. Then during my A/L , is when I was exposed to porn , which was a very rare opportunity then with a high risk of getting caught to our parents.(mine most probably would have terminated education altogether). With this experience in mind , I sure will prefer my young children being educated by a matured , sensitive person/teacher rather than some religious head, porn or other inappropriate sources.

Yes, I forgot to say, Evangelists want to preach both the Buddhism and Islam in their terms. Browse and see. They have denominations called Evangelist – Islam and Evangelist Buddhism. BTW. Buddhism can bot be understood only by reading about it. Practice it. You understand a different world. Sri Lanka both Colombo Suburbs (e.g. Kadawatha area) and recent Batticaloa region Evangelists priests can be FAKE Buddhist Monks. One was showing as a Catholic Father wearing the Frock. But, his wife was with him and was talking to the Bhikku “OYAA”. I think people around was very patient, resilient and did not attack her probably because she was a woman.

Chiv the problem, at least in the West, is this. What is normal sex? When I was in Ceylon (then; I am in the US at the moment) what was considered “normal” was very definite.
Now it is considered “normal” to insert something in every conceivable orifice of the body of any person of either sex.
So what do we teach children as normal?

Oruviral Blugala: If you a normal individual, if you are married and if you had happy life with your wife, you very well understand what is normal and what does not make you two happy. Otherwise, it is animal world there. Go and see Maharashta sex temples. Indians Royalty are the worst animals. I have far worse thing now though. Who knows Indians did not sculpt those thing in their temples.

Best place for monks to preach in alternate forms is in hospitals and prisons. But a tavern or two is ok I guess as it is done underground and closely monitored by the Maha Sanga.
    *
In my whole life, with all of the alternate sex around and in this land also known as the Big Satan, never have I heard of a mother doing ” her duty ” for her physically handicapped son. Bad for the son’s psyche; bad for the mother. This seems a uniquely Sri Lankan thing. In the Big Satan, I believe they probably let the social and psycological  services handle this very, very discreetly. Or the father might provide gadgets he specially and discretely  tailor makes.

Sex being a natural human and animal need doesn’t need to be taught. Once taught to humans publicly, the psychological and spiritual association to it vanishes and humans become….incapable…..as the personal mystery is lost. Or after a brief period of shocked indulgence at a young age, all feelings go sterile. This is Western social engineering at its zineth for population control, with abortion factored in together with the lgbtquia movement. Each human and animal learns sexuality through their own psyche and physical ability, with romantic and poetic love the powerful and sustainable potents.

      Dear RTF,
      .
You speak of the ideal situation, where owing to healthy attitudes and openness being the order of the day, all aspects of life fall naturally into place.
      .
While granting all that, in most societies there could be pockets (actually I fear that the opposite may be the case – if you can make sense of what I’m saying!) of people where proper knowledge and attitudes are not passed on. Then education is ery necessary.
      .
So you are right, and “they” are right.

        S_M,
No. This is not an ideal, but the normalcy for the majority. The pockets you speak of was about 1%, but with all the alternate promotion and propagation, it is now probably 10%, and growing….all to further the commercial venture.

Nothing is forbidden in Buddhism, the idea is to have moderation. Most bad behaviors (pornography, drinking, video games) are also addictive. Addiction is real, it can be observed scientifically that when someone experiences “pleasure”, specific neurotransmitters in the brain are responsible for releasing signals. The frequency of the signals can be measured. The monk is correct about sex education. If children can get their sex education from the parents, it is superior to what they will learn through trial-and-error, in school, or from their friends. The school is telling the child to “go for it” using a contraceptive, and the friends are having a contest to see who bags the most and the best.

Oruviral , good point. I am not an authority or even an expert , to say what is normal or not. But definitely I am aware, with time every thing else , essential to us has been normalized. So called religious authority (who gave them those powers???) have changed the rules according to their convenience. Even our Lankan constitution from time to time has been altered to suit politicians (like Wijedasa) comfort. Our food habits have changed over years. What was believed healthy is not any more and vice versa. As a physician, though I may not advocate any deviant (please note NOT pervert) sexual practices , still I am expected , to be beyond my own bias, in helping patient. There are children born with thyroid, insulin (diabetes) and other hormone abnormalities and they are not sinners to have such defect. . So it is also possible to have different ratios of “sex hormones” which are vital in future sexual development, preference, sexual identity and so on. This is how I see the LGBTQ community.
