Buddhist Monks And JVP Fight For Besieged Muslims’ Rights

Abandoned by the government, Muslim politicians and threatened by Sinhala extremists who are law unto themselves

Buddhist monks leading the campaign to solve Muslim squatters’ housing problem at Wilpattu, Janatha Vimukthi Permanuna (JVP), fighting for the rights of the Muslims and the Muslims carrying the coffin of a Buddhist monk at a funeral procession provide glimmer of hope for the country   torn apart by a few hundreds of Sinhala extremists.

I suspect these extremists as mercenaries of local and foreign forces with their own agenda against the island’s Muslims as part of the Zionist sponsored ongoing US led European global campaign against Islam and Muslims.

It was under such circumstance that a group of Buddhist monks and JVP have come forward to fight for the rights of Muslims and save the country from a potentially dangerous threat.

It was often said that a picture speaks one thousand words. However photo of Muslims carrying the coffin of a Buddhist monk, published in the Thursday 7 April 2014 issue of Muslim Tamil weekly “VIDIVELLI”, speaks million words. It reflects the centuries old harmony and understanding between the two communities.

MuslimIt was the picture of Muslims in the Mawanella area carrying in their shoulders the coffin of the chief prelate of Hemmathagama Kappurukka Buddhist Vihare Ven. Ranthila Ratnajothio Thero. The funeral procession led by two Buddhist monks was attended by large number of Muslims and Buddhist alike participates.

This is the symbol of harmony and understanding between Sinhala Muslim unity which prevailed in the country for more than one thousand years, but now being destroyed by few hundreds of Sinhala extremists whose words and deeds violate the very teachings of Lord Buddha which they claim to protect.

On Monday 7 April 2014, a Ceylon Today stated that the, JVP, has come forward to fight for the rights of Muslims.

The report filed by Gihan Nicholas had this to state; Coming down hard on an alleged illegal construction taking place in a Muslim burial ground at Maligawatta, the JVP said it remains committed to protect the rights of Sri Lanka’s Muslim community.

JVP Western Provincial Councilor, K.D. Lal Kantha alleged that the illegal construction, in the Muslim burial ground at Maligawatta, is taking place with the consent of the Ministry of Defense and Urban Development. “Since of late, a trend has been witnessed in Sri Lanka where the Muslim Community is being subjected to marginalization. The latest incident is amongst the spate of recent occurrences. A businessman has commenced constructing a building within the premises of the Maligawatta Muslim Burial Ground. Lalkantha said the businessman had disregarded an order by the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) to halt the construction.

That individual was backed by the Ministry of Defense and Urban Development, he alleged. He said the JVP is planning to take legal action and will lodge a complaint with the Human Rights Commission (HRC).

Area residents of Maligawatta have recently organized several protests denouncing the illegal construction activities taking place at the Muslim burial grounds in Maligawatta.

On the same day, 7 April 2014, under the headline Buddhist monks in firsthand tour of Wilpattu squatters highlighted the role played by Buddhist monks to help Muslim squatters solve their housing problem.

Following their visit Mannar Government Agent promised relief for Wilpattu squatters and seven Buddhist monks say will help squatters to obtain a solution.

At a meeting mediated by Rishad Bathiudeen Vanni MP and Minister of Industry and Commerce at noon yesterday (6), with 100 members of squatter families, and in the presence of a delegation of seven Buddhist monks led by Watareka Vijitha Thera (Secretary, Jathika Bala Sena and Member, Mahiyangana Pradeshiya Sabha), the GA promised to take some action on the issue in the next two weeks.

About 70 displaced families, squatting at this location, said that the very location was their original place of residence before they were evicted by the LTTE in 1990.The squatters said “From this very location 150 families were chased out in 1990. We temporarily settled in Puttalam but recently, after 24 years of living there, we were deregistered in Puttalam and now we can’t even enroll our children in Puttalam schools. We are not having any rights in Puttalam and we are re-displaced. Therefore we came to this Marichchikattu which is our original and traditional place of residence only to find our lands were declared as some form of a “reserved forest area” which clearly is not the case”.

Addressing the squatters, Watareka Vijitha Thera said: “We now see your situation clearly. We assure our support towards necessary steps to help resolve your issue”. The Venerable Monks also visited two thatched houses of the refugees to witness their plight first-hand and sympathized with them.

Minister Bathiudeen thanked the monks for visiting to witness the plight of refugees firsthand. “These IDPs are grateful for your interest. They understand the supportive and courteous nature of Buddhists of Sri Lanka” Minister Bathiudeen said.

A tense scenario ensued during the meeting between Minister Bathiudeen and the squatters which took place in the aftermath of venerable Buddhist monks after the team of monks left the scene. Squatters accused Minister Bathiudeen of inaction to their plight and pushing him between a rock and a hard place. “You are our representative and well known as a Minister. But look where our families are today. We look for your commitment. If this issue continues, we will go ahead and commit suicide. We have no other choice at all” shouted Uthuma Haniffa, a head of a squatter household ( of seven member family). “Just look at these children without even a toilet. Don’t you people in the government have no children?” asked an emotionally charged Uthuma.

The irony is that this happens at a time when Muslim politicians and  the so called prominent Muslims who consider kissing the feet of the power that is more important than   raising burning issues of their suffering community members.

This is the sad plight of the Muslim community which was not only abandoned by the government and its own so called politicians who were  ,perhaps busy watching cricket match, while the community being threatened by Sinhala extremists.

Gandasara and his GodfatheR seem to be getting rather desperate and have now started attacking moderate members of the Buddhist community and Sangha. Maybe they are disappointed that Geneva 25 has not resulted in the Chaos predicted by LW.

Anyway these are the last gyrations of the monster in its death throes. The majority of Buddhist have now rejected their philosophy of hatred and violence. People have better things to do than listen to these demented maniacs.

This is actually the rebirth of Mara, after Monk Mahanama to discredit the teachings of Enlightened Buddha. Sinhala Buddhism needs to be rescued from the Racists and Maras.

Despite all the negative things some people throw at JVP, JVP has more egalitarian principles than the others. Their newspaper is called, Attha, The Truth.

It is rather unfortunate, LSSP and CP sold their principles for racism. That is why they were thrown out of the 4th International on 1964.

It is not few hundred Buddhist extremists torn apart the country. In fact, it is the whole Buddhist Sinhala who torn apart this country. When I say, the Whole Buddhist Sinhala I am not including those few hundred true Buddhist and true Sinhalese who respect human values. We all know why the law and order system is silent and why the justice system is paralyzed and who are they? Who handed over the power to them to silent the law and order system and paralyze the justice system. It is the majority of Buddhist Sinhala people who gave them power. Don’t put the blame on local and foreign forces for your ills. You have a brain, you know what is wrong and what is right? You have the guidance from Lord Buddha, Allah, Jesus and Siva if you don’t understand yourself.

      Ajith

No one can deny the wisdom you have mentioned. However, Sri Lankans by nature are a very passive lot. The majority care less about the long term damage caused by a very flawed system of governance. God has blessed them with all seasons to ruin what’s left of it.

We Eelamists have followed our erstwhile leader Velu for over thirty years and got our women to explode buses, trains and public places to kill thousands of Sinhalas and Muslims and “to silent the law and order system and paralyze the justice system” in the country. We trained our boys to kill Sinhala Buddhists and Islamists to free our homeland. In the end, we trained old men and used them to shoot the enemy as well. We gave them all cyanide to kill themselves in case they were captured. We did all that to create Eelam for Tamils only. Now that Sinhala Buddhists have drowned our leaders in Nanthikadal, they’re experiencing a false peace and useless growth. Lets fall behind our new leader Gobi to revive LTTE and make Sri Lanka another Iraq or better Syria. Ass I can read, this is only a bit of Ajith’s motto.

what an optimist. The sooner his optimism leaves him the better for the Muslims. Does he seriously think that these rabid extremists are “part of the Zionist sponsored ongoing US led European global campaign against Islam and Muslims”. What do they know of Zionism? They are just rabid chauvinist racists. What kind of a Buddhist monk would with impunity say that he would cut up the body of the cabinet minister Rauf Hakim who himself does not have a backbone which perhaps deserves to be cut up.Bensen

So far only people who have spoken against the victimisation of the Muslims in Sri Lanka are US and the Europeans. Most of the Muslim countries voted against the HR resolution despite knowing about the Budhist attcks on Muslims.
Why blame the West for the actions of the local politicians and the Rajapakse family aided and abeted by the greedy Muslim politicians.

Muslim countries always had a soft spot for Sri Lanka. Your Rulers have assured these countries, even recently of fair treatment to the minorities. Muslims hold the bond of eternal pact of Brotherhood.

Maghribi talk fair treatment to minorities. Read below how Islam advice its followers like Maghribi to treat minorities fairly in Islamic countries:

Koran 8:39 says; “And fight them until there is no more Fitnah (disbelief and polytheism: i.e. worshipping others besides Allah) and the religion (worship) will all be for Allah Alone [in the whole of the world]. But if they cease (worshipping others besides Allah), then certainly, Allah is All-Seer of what they do.”

Now imagine Islamists become the majority in Sri Lanka and Sharia is the law of the land.

Practising Muslims self impose and legislate the Islamic Shariah. Muslims do not expect every one to comprehend the Ayah in the Noble Quran. However, it has to be read by context of the time of revelation.

People who are serious to learn Islam seek guidance from the authentic sources.

Why don’t you read the Ayah (verse) before (The Noble Quran 8:38)

Tell those who disbelieve that if they cease (from persecution of believers) that which is past will be forgiven them; but if they return (thereto) then the example of the men of old hath already gone (before them, for a warning). (The Noble Quran 8:38)

And fight them until persecution is no more, and religion is all for Allah. But if they cease, then lo! Allah is Seer of what they do. (The Noble Quran 8:39)

            Maghribi,
I have read the Koran and the Bible from start to the end and even made a lot of notes. Now a days, I do extract what is needed from the web.

Prophet Muhammad accepted revelations by earlier prophets. If the God is the same, Bible verses and the Koran verses shouldn’t contradict with each other. But we all know that there are so many verses in the Koran that contradict logically and with each other and with that of the Bible.

If the God (Allah) created the first man and woman, he should have been a benefactor for the entire human race. Leave his unbelieving creations like us aside; the God should have at least made his adherents a harmonious lot. But we can clearly see, he failed to do that. Both Christians and Islamists who believe their own book and interpret the verses the way each sect want are believers, others unbelievers. Verses you have mentioned, 8:38 & 39 in the Koran does just that to find a way to start persecution and increase your lot.

Not only that, every Christian and Muslim sect has made their own separate road map to the creator God’s heaven. They all say; if you do not join them, you are damned. The Jews, in whose book that genesis is written, does not say so. That is the worst discordant thing that the omnipotent God had thought his adherents to believe.

If the God had forgotten to make his adherents to be nonviolent at the point of his creation, he should have at least forced them not to fight later. But could not do that either. Had God made his followers friendly, we all should be his adherents without questions. Our dilemma is that Jews, Christians and Muslims had been fighting each other all along.

Those who believe the God is omnipotent, omnipresent and omniscient and think he is watching them every minute fear question afore said shortcomings. But we who do not believe a creator or his prophets question those shortcomings. And Koran accuse and degrad us as fakirs. In Saudi they would have chopped our heads off for questioning the Koran. But Muslims here call for religious freedom.

Nowhere in the Koran says it (Koran and Hadith) has to be read by context of the time of revelation. Followers of different prophets the creator Isn’t that’s why some 60 year old men pay parents and marry their 16 year old girls even today. We read in papers that Mullahs defend such acts. Is it not wrong?

              Attn ‘I am no muslim’

The Noble Quran is in Arabic and all translations defer. It’s very likely that you have read the interpretations from a non Islamic source. This assumption is made after reading all your comments with regard to Islam and Muslims. Faith is something that is developed within one’s own perception and nurtured in one’s heart. In reality, practising Muslims view this world as a fleeting moment in one’s life. The purpose of us devoting time and effort is to project the correct Islam as understood by our predecessors (Salaf) This does not make us Salafi. It is never out intention to convert people to our way of life as we do not possess the power. However, we are expected to strive to set an example as believing Muslim. Ultimate. faith is personal and no one on earth has the power to force on to another.

Unfortunately, some of the acts you have mentioned practised by Muslims have nothing to do with Islam. I wish I had more time to elaborate.

Latheef Farook, Watareka Vijitha is a either a muslim who put on a yellow robe or a monk who bought by Muslim businessmen and muslim extremists. There are few more. This is a new trend now. This monk is a disgrace to buddhism and must derobe. He is suitable for muslim moulavee. The millions of money earn from Drug business, many Illegal businesses, INGO donations from muslim countries used to buy monks now.

Don’t try to paint a rosy picture in Mawanella. The photograph of Muslim’s who grabbed Devanagala buddhist sacred area carrying Ven.Rathanajothi thero’s coffin reflect what muslims wants to show the world. They wants to tell the world that we are always peaceful and Sinhalese who make problems for us. But the reality is Muslim’s grabbed the sacred land of Devanagala and built houses with the support of greedy politicians in the area, and finally engaged on a “face saving” stunt for their misdeeds. If I grabb a muslim sacred area or any other minority religious site I’m doing the same thing Latheef. You can’t fool the world all the time Latheef.

That part of the article encouraging cooperation between Muslims and Sinhalese has to be welcomed. But not the congenital hatred of this
Lateef Farook of the talented and friendly Jewish people when he spews his usual anti-Israel venom “as part of the Zionist sponsored ongoing US led European global campaign against Islam and Muslims” The USA/Europe have become wiser to Islamic conspiracies to take over the world and are effectively meeting them. Farook and other Islamists should concentrate in helping their community free of their well-known hatred of the Jewish people.

By the way, please give up the falsehood Muslims are here for a thousand years. While a handful Arabs/Moors may have been ship-wrecked here several centuries ago Muslims, as a notable community, came in large numbers only after the 18th century from the littoral coasts of the present Tamilnadu. Their current efforts to claim a part of the Eastern Province, on the basis of numbers that came by because of their unnatural population explosion, will be resisted by both the Sinhala and Tamil communities. So long as they remain peaceful and orderly they have nothing to fear.

    • 0
      1

Strange bedfellows indeed. Muslims are not meant to be ruled by un-believers. The Koran is very clear that believers must resist unbelievers by any means until Islam establishes its supremacy. This doesn’t mean that everyone must be forced to become Muslim, but rather that everyone must submit to Muslim rule.

In spite of Islamic teaching, there are Muslims who are loyal to Sri Lanka. But true islamists like Maghribi here cannot honestly be loyal to Sri Lanka or any non Muslim country for state is intended to be inseparable from religious rule. For Muslims, Islamic law, Sharia is complete and not designed to coexist with or be subordinate to other legal systems.

    1

Koran 3:28 tells Muslims not to take those outside the faith as friends, unless it is to ‘guard themselves.’ But there are circumstances such as to defeat the non-believers (Buddhists, Hindus and etc) Muslims are allowed to go against the Koran [Allah’s word]. To gain the trust of non-believers they do things that they would ever dream of doing. This carrying a dead body of a pakir (Buddhist monk)is just one incident.

Bukhari 49:857 says; “He who makes peace between the people by inventing good information or saying good things, is not a liar.” Lying is permitted when the end justifies the means. See the extent a Muslim can go to draw out the vulnerability of their fore.

Muslims have to be truthful but only to each other. Under certain circumstances, taqiyya and kitman, lying to non-believers are permitted. This is what gullible monks do not understand.

A good article who also present another picture of the Wilpattu settlement than what the racist BBS earlier has presented, But I certainly don’t agree with the equally racist sentiments of the author of the article, tht Buddhist extremists are “mercenaries of local and foreign forces with their own agenda against the island’s Muslims as part of the Zionist sponsored ongoing US led European global campaign against Islam and Muslims”. This sentence contain so many errors that I really don’t know where to start! First, why should American and European countries be against Islam when they in UNHRC clearly has voiced their worries for the attacks against Muslims in Sri Lanka from Buddhist Extremist groups, clearly with the silent support from the government? Secondly, why should these countries in that case support the BBS, as hinted here? Third; why should Europe and USA have allowed millions if Muslims to take refugee and settle in their countries if they where against Muslims and Islam? Have anyone heard any Muslim country allowing refugees from other religions to settle in their countries and allow them to openly practise their own religions without harassments? And why this talk about a “sionist” conspiration against Muslims in all countries, when it’s rather a conspifracy from most Muslim countries in the world against Israel? No, Mr. Latheef Farook is only following the rethoric of his masters in those Muslim countries who hate Israel only because it’s a country surrounded by Islamic states and having the nerve to mostly consisting of people with another religion.

Latheef, What I can’t understand is that you state, “abandoned by the government” but you always take pride in stating that the Muslim States supported the S:L: government at the UNHRC when resolutions were brought against them. Being a Hindu when I state, “emmathamum sammatham” meaning any religion is O.K. with us OR we respect all religions, my Muslim friend used to vehemently oppose me saying that he will not accept that and ‘Islam’ is the best. Anyway everyone has the freedom of opinion but then they should state it non-violently without taking the law into their hands.

You’re beginning to understand Islam. All Muhammadan listen to “there is no God but Allah” at least five times a day through hooters of their mosques. How can Muslims have peace with followers of other Gods?

Thee bearded Mullahs sing “there is no God but Allah” five times a day through hooters of their mosques. And their followers listen to “there is no God but Allah” intently.

It’s amazing such people carry the dead body (coffin) of Ranthiligama Ratnajothi who did not believe in Allah for cremation. Muhammadans must tell us What’s the catch for Koran 2:191-193 says; “And kill them wherever you find them, and turn them out from where they have turned you out. And Al-Fitnah [disbelief] is worse than killing….”

      I am no muslim – read the following;

A belief in reincarnation is atypical within Islam, although exceptions exist with a few small sects. This essay analyzes the role that reincarnation plays in maintaining a sense of unity and identity among the Druze, an Islamic sect residing primarily in the Levantine Middle East. It also describes the necessary conditions for reincarnation according to Druze doctrine and as evidenced in reincarnation stories. Reincarnation is of great social significance for the Druze, regarding family and village relations, and the Druze community at large. There is, however, some resistance within the community to a belief in reincarnation. This resistance is due in part to image management in the political context of Syria, and also because a belief in reincarnation is a stigma for a group in the Islamic Middle East. It also works against Druze efforts to present itself to the world as modern. (Islam, Druze identity, reincarnation)

I have watched a one hour documentary about a Jew joining a Druze community in Al Jazeera a few months back. The rituals he had to go through amazed me. My first thought was this cannot be sect of Islam. Then I thought Wahhabis and Salafis would kill them at the first opportunity.
