Buildings Can Be Rebuilt, But Not Broken Hearts

By A. M. Majeed Muzammil –

A. M. Majeed Muzammil

There has been a vicious campaign to whip up anti-Muslim sentiment and unrest among Sinhalese over the past few years by Sinhala Buddhist ultra-nationalist groups. The aim is to create racial discord between the Sinhalese and Muslim communities.

There had been more than two hundred recorded incidents of intimidation, violence and arson attacks and tens of police complaints made against the aforesaid groups by Muslims. Had the government enforced law and order and brought perpetrators to book , this Ampara – Teldeniya violence against Muslims could have been averted.

Following the death of a Sinhalese lorry driver ten days after hospitalization due to a road rage incident, extremist Buddhist bigots had wreaked havoc in a dozen towns. Over 300 houses, nearly 250 businesses establishments and over 90 vehicles were attacked and torched over a period of three days and nights. Scores of mosques were vandalized and desecrated.

Ironically, houses and businesses were burnt in front of law enforcement officials. The body of an innocent 27-year-old Muslim youth was found inside a shop at Kengalle in Digana. The riots were similar to the events that unfolded in Aluthgama and Beruwala in 2014.

It was distressing to witness a Sinhalese doctor at the Teldeniya hospital refusing to treat the bleeding head wounds of Abdul Saleel Mohamed Fazil, a local councilor who was mercilessly assaulted by the Special Task Force.

Be that as it may, it is pleasing and heartening to hear that there were many instances where Sinhalese families gave shelter and protection to their besieged Muslim neighbours and friends. In most cases, they were kept hidden in their homes, and there were several cases of people standing up to the mobs and refusing to let them go on the rampage in their vicinity.

This clearly proves that, the majority of the Sinhalese do not condone these types of violence against another community and with deeper feeling and affection towards Muslims, have expressed their dissatisfaction about the acts of violence unleashed against the Muslim community.

The finest couple of examples to be cited for their benevolence details the young Buddhist monk Ven. Waturakumbure Dhammaratana Thera, and a group of Sinhalese students patrolling the streets of the Muruthalawa village in Yatinuwara, to prevent violent incidents against its Muslims residents and slept in the Muruttalawa mosque along with their Muslim brethren.

In another instance, Madeena Muslim Hotel at Anamaduwa, was burnt down by a petrol bomb attack. A majority of those who came to assist in the repair of the hotel were from the Sinhalese community living in the area. The renovation was completed within 12 hours after the attack and the hotel resumed business the very same day.

The initial police inaction and reported connivance of some sections of STF with the mobs have undoubtedly added fuel to the communal flare which spread to Katugastota, Aladeniya, Digana, Abathenna, Akurana and other parts of Sri Lanka. It is akin to Bollywood movies where the cops always come after deaths and wanton destruction to the scene.

We cannot allow a few fringe extremist elements to premeditate another anti-Muslim pogrom. Law enforcement officers must take stern action against the perpetrators irrespective of political affiliations or status and prosecute under Chapter XV of the Penal Code as well as section 3 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights Act No. 56 of 2007.

The government must share equal responsibility in failing to act swiftly and allowing a manageable situation to get out of hand. The President has currently appointed a panel of three retired judges to probe the breakdown in law and order and it should not end up  like the Justice A C Alles’ Commission of Inquiry into the Galle anti-Muslim riots of July 1982.

It has transpired that the Mahason Balakaya, or Devils’ Force, under the leadership of Amith Weerasinghe had masterminded the spread of violence and mayhem on social media, specifically on “Face book” in which his page has over 143, 000 followers.

The primary objective of the so-called ultra-nationalists was to cripple and undermine the economic power of Muslims and their livelihood; hence Muslim owned business establishments were precisely targeted. “Fashion Bug” and its head offices in Colombo, “No Limit” at Maharagama, “Last Chance Electrical Showroom” in Wennappuwa, a cosmetic shop in Elpitiya, a leather store at Wijerama Junction – Maharagama, are just a few examples. Losses are estimated to run in to millions.

Most of the Muslim traders sweat blood and earn money. It takes a whole lifetime of hard work to build a business, just for it to be burnt in a few seconds. How traumatized will the owners be to witness their business establishments ransacked and set ablaze?

Why are Ven.Gnanasara Thera, Ven. Ampitiye Sumanaratna Thera, Ven.Akmeemana Dayarathana and their cohorts like Amith Weerasinghe, Dan Priyasath and Saliya Ranawake spewing venom and inciting hatred and religious fanaticism against Muslims?

Four sublime states of mind have been taught by the Buddha: Loving-kindness (metta); Compassion (karuna); Sympathetic Joy (mudita); Equanimity (upekkha). Do these hate-mongers truly know the meaning of the aforesaid as well as Dhammapada Verse 5 which states,” Na hi Verena Verani”– Hatred never ceases by hatred, but by love alone is healed.

It seems that instead of following the path of peace and beautiful values taught to them by the Buddha, they have created for themselves a new way to attain Nibbana by torching and desecrating mosques, and vandalizing and trying to terrorize a community.

Where were these so-called pseudo patriots during 30 years conflict with the LTTE? Did they fight valiantly with our “Tri Forces heroes” against the marauding Tigers? Have they forgotten how Muslim officers did their duty to their nation by playing a pivotal role in defeating terrorism?

How can anyone forget the names of Captain Shahul Hameed, Commanding Officer, Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol (LRRP), Colonel Tuan Nizam Muthaliff, Commanding Officer, Military Intelligence Corps, Col. Fazly Lafir, one of the founding officers of Sri Lanka Special Force or Chief Inspector N.M. Nilabdeen, who is probably the best counter-terrorism officer Sri Lanka has ever seen.

Chief of Defence Staff, Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne rightly stated that “It is Muslims who led our long-range reconnaissance patrols at the risk of losing their lives. In the process, some of them were killed by the LTTE. We are alive today, because of our brave Muslim brothers. The LTTE attacked and chased the Muslims away from areas which were under its control in the North and East because they did not support their cause. Sinhalese who unfairly harm Muslims are traitors. We have a duty to protect the Muslims.”

What a profound statement!

The Muslim community is still reeling in shock and the people of Digana and Teldeniya have become disillusioned due to the failures of law enforcement. Buildings can be rebuilt, but not broken hearts. Compensation can be given but the mental anguish and trauma of the victims will indelibly be etched in their minds and will certainly remain forever.

An individual will definitely meet the consequences and severely experience what he or she has viciously done to others.  This is the Universal Law of Karma!

The writer is the author of book titled” Agony of Bosnia”.

I am very sorry to say this Muslims were used by their leaders and Sinhalese, when you a ethnic which a minority should hand together with other ethnic minority to get strength but the Muslim leaders stick with Ruling parties and spoil all the peace talks now what you get out the help nothing and destroy your livelihood. All other riots were aimed to Tamils no voice from Muslims. The admireal of army wanted to start the fight between Tamils and Muslims why he has to tell now why they didn’t thank you all in 2009
Please analyze current situation at your coffee table don’t try to publish in the paper and create more tension your leaders for their own welfare not for the people

      Pasel

LTTE were terrorist they proved, were you in a comma for the last 30 years before they were eliminated. Those Sinhalese who call Muslims terrorist without an atom of proof are the real Sinhala terrorist following the footstep LTTE.

Living in fears is not a new thing to lankens that went all the destructions during the last 30 years of war. But the very same people to incite the kind of harm to own nation is beyond understanding. If these men behind thoese attacks are believed to Rajapakshe supportive groups, but are buddhists, what talks we need to tell about them ?
Barbarians of all forms should be crushed at their bud level – that is why we need a leader to handle lanken law and order within shorter period of time.

Unforutnatley, our caricature President behaves as if he has no spine right at the moment, he should finally see it in a larger picture to whom he has been wagging the tail today.
We need him to appoint general SARATH FONSEKA as the minister of law and order to usher what is lagged for decades.
He is an able person _ he has promised… he will get th esupport from all the civil society groups , non political groups in changing the structure.

We call we are multi ethinic and multi cultural society, but not even 1% in the country feels so.
They are very shakey people, if one extremist would think to attack MUSLIMs or TAMILS, there are enough to rally round and support it. Why ?

Why are these so called buddhist that hateful to their own minority folks ?
Sociologists and psycohlogists should find the reasons and make aware to the people on a regular manner. That can then help soceity to rebuld.
We need protest marches almost every weekends.
      Protest marches against any extremists.
These should be held by govt as is the case in some developed countries.

These Muslims are ethnically Tamil but will never admit to this truth, as this does not benefit them in anyway politically or economically , there will stick to the lie that they are of Arab or Moor descent and will always join with the Sinhalese racists and establishment to commit war crimes and genocide on the island’s Tamils , as is greatly benefits them. They have stolen lots of Tamil lands in the east and in Mannar. Due to the large scale exodus and expulsion of Tamils their percentage has almost doubled from around 5.78% to almost 10%. Even now like the author if this article they are cunningly trying to remind the Sinhalese their dirty part in the war for just Tamil rights and not attack their former Muslim allies in this dirty war but concentrate on the Tamils. No wonder they were kicked out of South India. Like a few other commentators have stated just look at their photos typical Tamil Dravidian features but will deny this and abuse anyone who dare to bring this obvious truth.

Rohan the Australoid crow, how is your other avatars. The article is not about ethnicity but problems faced by all minorities. As usual you are coming out with bullshit like land robbing, kicking out of India and Tamil features. What do you expect from your writings? Moors to join you and fight as one minority race against Sinhalese. This will never happen even in your next world. Moors (Muslims) are Moors (Muslims) and Tamils are Tamils. But we can co-operate as minorities to get fair treatment from the Government and destroy the racist Budu Balu Senas and their cohorts. So don’t caw.

Ralli Ameen the mad please read this article from a renowned Arab scholar in the west and howl or caw. He states Tamil Muslims in Sri Lanka are called Moors. A few Arabs settling and intermarrying into the local Dravidian Tamil converts to Islam does not make you Arab. Even the Arabs know this but you keep on cawing

Rohan the donkey, first you know know Dr. K.M.A. Ahmad Zubair is not an Arab Scholar but Kerala Muslim and was attached to Kerala University, Department of Arabic studies, of course even he is a Keralite he was a descendant from Arab settlers 1000 of years back. Then you you idiot understand fully what he had written. He had stated, “Labbais, Maraikkars, Rowthers, Kayalars, Dekkanis and Pathans are not caste identities but the profession each group carried out”. Lebbais were not betel growers, they were cloth merchants but would have handled betel with other products. Rawther mainly from Turkish horse traders and all these shows trade was a monopoly of Arabs, Persian, Turks etc. When they settled, intermarried with local women and with converts so we have these Muslims population in India and Sri Lanka. Originally they used Arabic script later dropped when became proficient in local language. North Indian Muslims instead of dropping Arabic developed it so we have Urdu language. The reason may be Hindu Northerners were not so good as Hindu Southerners in language scripts. The other thing the doctor says is, “The Chera, Chola and Pandya rulers patronised Islam and donated lands for places of worship”. That shows how much these traders would have contributed to their civilization like in Sri Lanka.

Dumb NAtive Vedda: Portugeuse had said, that there was a considerable Sinhala Population in the North. what happened to those ? “Portugeuse had said, that there was a considerable Sinhala Population in the North. what happened to those ?”

When, where, why, how, ……….did the Portuguese say there was a considerable Sinhala Population in the North? Were the Sinhalese include 3000 odd Sinhala mercenaries (Lascarins) taken to the North to fight the Tamils.

          PS
The Portuguese army in Sri Lanka was composed of Portuguese soldiers, Sinhala and soldiers (lascarins).

Lascarins (ලස්කිරිඤ්ඤ-laskiriñña, லசுக்காரின்- Lacukkāriṉ) is a term used in Sri Lanka to identify indigenous soldiers who fought for the Portuguese during the Portuguese era (1505–1658).

“Why Except Wahabi Muslims no other even including next village living Sufis can not go to KAthankudy. “

Good question, you should ask some of the Khalifa nutters in this forum.

If all what the writer had stated here is not true, prove it. As for the innocent Sinhalese driver he did not die because of the brawl with Muslim. He lodged a complaint in the Police and got himself admitted to hospital to get treatment. His parents visited him daily and had stated he was well and hearty. suddenly he was admitted Kandy hospital in serious condition where he died. Your Bodu Balu sena and their cohorts know the secret. It was published in 27-3-2018 LEN e-paper that his death was due inside works by your own Sinhala racist to start a riot. The other Sinhala man died when the hand grenade he was carrying exploded, karma. Donkey except for Colonel Tuan Nizam Muthaliff others were Moors but it make no difference since all were Sri Lankan Muslims. Even your STF was the brain child of a Muslim superior officer, if you ask the present commandant M.R.Latiff you can verify. As for your archaeological sites your archaeological department and land ministry can easily take action against them if what you say is true. I think you have supply the dossier of truth to them.

You are not telling the truth as usual. Tell me how many muslims were killed. You people killed Sinhala people. Many people comments on Atrocities by Muslims on sinhala People, sinhala buddhists, sinhala girls and buddhist ancient cites. but, you people never talk those. Instead, there are people promoting anti-muslim violence. What I haerd some muslims were supportive against the Wahabi hide outs.

You give the figure of Sinhalese killed, raped, attacked or properties destroyed. How can cities be destroyed if it is ancient? Yes your are types of people promoting anti-Muslim violence.

Dumb RALLi Ameen: I wrote in so many places that one Sinhala Driver of 41 years with family of two children was killed by four Muslim thugs, most probably Wahabis. I heard, some peole vandalized buddhist temples too. One Temple was complaining that the Bhikku can not tolerate the smaell of Meat coming to from the butcher shop. The govt doe snot allow certain things to be published because of repercussions.

Dumb Jim softy, I had given above who killed the driver. I had this information from reliable Muslims of that area but I thought otherwise but after seeing this news was given in Len e-paper of 27th March I understood the information I got from my friends was true. Our Muslims will never attack Temple, Church or Kovil, stop your lies. Actually Bhikkus (not all) love the smell of beef steak, do you?

Regarding the Fashion shops: the way sinhala people see it is, muslims say muslims women, nd school children to cover their bodies as much as they can. Married women can not be recognized because their covered up. On the other hand, you people sell short dresses, sexy dresses to sinhala girls and women. So, some psinhala epopel see hypocrisy in your approach and become hostile. Why don’t you ask muslims to respect the majority culture. YOu can kill chicken, cattle without any hesitiation, you do everything and ask accountability from buddhists. How can you do that. How much ever sinhala peole talk Muslims do not hear.

Shops means they can have any types of goods. Those good in demand they stock more. This is the usual business norm. So who is telling your women to buy those goods without buying Reddai Attai and sarees. Your men and women thinks it is modern and our men and women thinks those are indecent cloths except for sarees and other decent cloths. Your culture now is western culture, even decent Sinhalese don’t follow those. The gobblers of chicken, mutton, beef are Sinhalese (90%), otherwise all the farms had to be close down.

I will be the first one to raise 5th April 1971 and 1987-90 if my response to Johnny Baby is relevant.

Johnny Baby came from a bigoted ankle hence my comment is specifically targeted the baby.

By now you would have noticed I never missed an opportunity to mention both 5th April 1971 and 1987-90. I am sure you are teasing me or trying to provoke me, all with good intentions. .
      You are forgiven.

All these Muslim writers who blame Sinhala Buddhist extremists should pay attention to Wahabi extremism spreading in Sri Lanka. Every action by these Wahabis against Sinhala Buddhists will have a reaction. All the Muslim-Sinhala clashes starting from 1915 incident were started by Muslims. If Sinhala Buddhists keep on chanting ‘Karaneeya Metta Sutra’ Wahabis will play hell in the country. Muslims should remember that they are in Sri Lanka because a Sinhala Buddhist King Senerath was kind enough to save them from Portuguese persecution. Younger generation has forgotten the history. The Government should make learning Sri Lankan history compulsory for all the ‘Kallathonis’ in Sri Lanka.

Reading through one is left with the impression that A M Majeed Muzamil is worried about violence against Muslims but not necessarily violence in general.
The title ~ “Buildings Can Be Rebuilt, But Not Broken Hearts” is poetic. “……..Muslim Hearts” more appropriate?
Majeed has authored book titled ”Agony of Bosnia”. Has he said one word about the genocide of Rohingyas? Yemenis?

Mr. Muzamil: Read the following how you people destroy each other. come and preach to us.The Islamic State Attacks on Shia Holy Sites and the “Shrine Protection Narrative”: Threats to Sacred Space as a Mobilization Frame

After conquering large swaths of Syria and Iraq, the IS undertook an aggressive sectarian campaign in which they not only enacted horrific violence against the Shia people, but also damaged or destroyed several key Shia mosques and shrines. Drawing on Social Movement Theory (SMT), this article analyzes the response by various Shia nonstate actors—militia leaders, religious clergymen, populist preachers, and seminal poets. It argues that they used the IS threat to Shia holy sites to develop and deploy a mobilization frame that has come to be referred to as the “shrine protection narrative.”…
