I am Callum Macrae. I am an award-winning film maker, writer and journalist. The ‘journalist’ part is important because it allows me to fictionalize the truth and paint fiction as fact. If you want me to explain, consider ‘Sri Lanka’s Killing Fields’. That should do.
I don’t sleep much because the horrors of the world keep me awake. The downside of this is that I can’t be woken up; no, not because I am awake, but when I pretend to sleep I cannot be woken up. But I do take a nap, now and then, like a little while ago. Now I am fresh and wide-awake. So I can be fresh and frank.
I was really angry that the Commonwealth decided to let Sri Lanka host CHOGM 2013. I am angry that Kamalesh Sharma doesn’t show any interest in returning my calls. I said that allowing CHOGM to go ahead helps Mahinda Rajapaksa, who I said is suspected of being a war criminal. I even said that the UN also suspects him of being a war criminal. I finally said that could lead to the breakup of the Commonwealth.
Well, here’s the truth. I am a film-maker who has acquired some journalistic credentials. Now if someone expects me to abide by the basic ethics of journalism, that’s too much to ask. Corroboration, verification of claims, reliability of sources and such are not things I concern myself with. For me, it is all about ‘splash’, which is the only way that a non-journalist can make a turn nonentity to name.
My work on Sri Lanka for Channel 4 would show any impartial AND well-informed viewer that short-cut, innuendo, clever editing and non-disclosure of important facts are the main ingredients in the stories I cook up. I’ve used LTTE and pro-LTTE sources and treated their ‘information’ as fact that requires no cross-checking. I’ve glorified directly and through association the worst terrorists the world has ever known. Sure, I indulge in occasional tokenism by inserting into script a censure-line on the LTTE, but that shouldn’t fool anyone. It is like Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch with their sporadic barbs directed at the USA; just gives ‘balance’ to make slant sound ‘investigative’ and ‘exhaustive’.
Now if CHOGM should not be held in Sri Lanka because some people suspect Mahinda Rajapaksa of being a war criminal, as I pointed out to the Commonwealth Secretariat recently, someone can ask me if I’m suffering from selective amnesia. Yes, sadly, I am. But I am wide awake now. Commonwealth Heads of Government have met in countries with proven (not suspected) track-records of genocide and multiple crimes against humanity, war criminals all. Heck, if we are talking Commonwealth here, the entire narrative is predicated on genocide, plunder, culture-erasure and other horrible things.
The official head of the Commonwealth is Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth. Not too long ago, the Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg, Deputy Prime Minister no less, acknowledged that the invasion of Iraq was illegal. Britain has been party to war crimes in Iraq, Pakistan and Afghanistan. By tagging itself like a colony to the United States of America, Britain has made a case for expulsion from the Commonwealth.
Canada has hosted CHOGM. Australia too. The crimes against humanity perpetrated by governments in these country with respect to how they treat the first nations are well documented.
I think I should not ask why Sharma doesn’t speak to me, I should ask the logic of their being a job such as the one that Sharma has. Maybe it should be turned into a brand name such as Channel 4, where truth and falsehood obtain weight and worth as per label attached and for reasons of political expediency.
All this is giving me a headache. Right now I am wide awake and I just realized that I am shooting myself in the foot. Better get back to pretend-sleep. Don’t try to wake me up, for that would be a futile exercise.

Rich nations in EU would not even consider CW summit as such world summit. UK is almost poor country in Europe. Some compare it with Greece and Portugal. Some predict if the economy of the UK would collapse, other EU nations have to donate billions as was the case with Greece last year. All these info are not clear to any common wealth states. Besides, over 90 % of CW states are poor afro states that would not have big voice while being among few developed members of it.
Our people lacking the knowledge seem to do whatever the English would do, even after 65 years of independence. What could bring all these wastes to the poor man in SL ?

Alone acquiring some journalistic experience mean not necessarily that he should keep kirimati gilapu crocodile, fully ignored towards the national issues today. He should have learnt to react accordingly. Those who offered him awards would call them back if those committees are clear how MS has been performing today. If Medical docs would not treat his or her patients well, patient diagnoses will go wrong. Consequences are the harm for the health of patients. What brings the awards that a writer has won in his carrier life, if he cant address the issues without beating around the bush.
For me, Dr. Asokas writing is very clear. His style is going to the hearts of any average ones easily. He compares law and order of a country as the role of a father in a family….. that I really like it.. I really did.
Whenever paying visits to motherland, every time, I was speechless seeing and hearing things that I would not do the manner that people down there are used to. Most of among young generation are not taught respect elders today. They are even worst than youth in Europe. Most of them are only busy with their electronic devices. Just sms/e-mail exchanges sometimes for no reasons seem to make proud their parents since parents^knowledge sees it as some sort of progress of their kids :)

For ones like me who travels to the country on a regular manner (at least twice / year) while travelling around the globe, I notice myself that our people have almost lost respect of life today. Last time, I also spoke to TUTU drivers, skilled workers, shop keepers across the country to make me an own view about the country. Many among them were frightened to share me their own feelings except that three wheelers fearlessly said that the rulers are murderous. All these connected me with my own experience back in eighties.

Here we go again; instead of refuting Malinda’s arguments, most of you brandish your AK 47s (abusive words, slander, name calling etc) to silence him. The sarcastic message in his article is that Callum Macrae’s work as a journalist is highly questionable. His documentaries are a mélange of fiction and facts with bias towards the funding party (in this case, probably, the Tamil Diaspora). If an informed viewer sees these documentaries s/he would most accurately side with Malinda because Macrae has failed to strike the right balance and separate the fiction from facts as an impartial and objective journalist would and should do. Let’s take the main points again:
1. short-cut, innuendo, clever editing and non-disclosure of important facts are the main ingredients in Macrae’s stories
2. use of LTTE and pro-LTTE sources and treat their ‘information’ as fact that requires no cross-checking
3. Glorifying directly and through association the LTTE, the worst terrorists the world has ever known; (with insertion into script a few censure-lines on the LTTE which shouldn’t fool anyone)
Comparison is like Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch with their sporadic barbs directed at the USA; just to give ‘balance’ to make slant sound ‘investigative’ and ‘exhaustive’.
4. Commonwealth Heads of Government have met in countries with proven (not suspected) track-records of genocide and multiple crimes against humanity, war criminals all. Heck, if we are talking Commonwealth here, the entire narrative is predicated on genocide, plunder, culture-erasure and other horrible things. (Can you deny this fact)!
5. Britain’s Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg acknowledged that the invasion of Iraq was illegal. It means clearly that Britain has been party to war crimes in Iraq, Pakistan and Afghanistan. Consequently, Britain has made a case by itself for expulsion from the Commonwealth.
6. Canada and Australia have hosted CHOGM. The on-going crimes against humanity perpetrated by Canadian and Australian governments with regard to their treatment of the first nations are well-known and well-documented.
The main question today is why this selective bashing? As we all know ‘human rights’ is a complex and complicated issue and every country has its own share in it. It has been alleged that Sri Lankan head of State and his armed forces may have committed crimes against humanity. (It is still an allegation and suspicion that occurred during the last phase of a brutal war. According to most reliable reports, luckily, it is not ‘genocide’ anymore; e.g. UNHCR High Commissioner’s recent observations) However, Sri Lanka sure had to deal with the most ruthless terrorist organization in the world. The LTTE made and used the suicide bomb, assassinated 2 heads of governments (SL President Premadasa and India’s ex-PM Rajiv Gandhi), SL foreign minister Kadiragamar, leading presidential candidate Gamini Dissanayake, Harvard law professor and Tamil rights activist Dr. Neelan Thiruchelvam,and a number of massacres of unarmed civilians who had nothing to do with their separatist war.We all know the list is too long to be mentioned here. The LTTE is also responsible for the expulsion of over 90,000 Muslims from Sri Lanka’s North with an incredibly short notice in Oct 1990 (exactly 13 years ago today). SL Government, with limited resources, had to take care of victims of all these terror acts perpetrated by the LTTE.
Malinda’s main point is that Macraes’ journalism speaks only about one killer (probably the right killer) whereas the ‘ruthless’ mass killer (LTTE) is conveniently ignored. As readers we prefer a balance account of news and views since we too, like journalists, have only a limited time to inform ourselves.

Actually I strongly suspect that it is not so much the Tamil Diaspora that is funding Macrae’s propaganda as various UK extremist groups and individuals who have long admired the Tamil Tigers for their fanatical intransigence and ruthlessness. These frustrated revolutionaries live out their fantasies of what they would like to do in the UK, Australia and elsewhere by presenting the Tamil Tigers as heroic revolutionaries and putting them on a pedestal as an example of what they themselves really value. They are dreaming – “Ah, what noble people to make such sacrifices for their cause! If only we could do the same!”
This is obviously true of certain journalists in the BBC and Channel 4 and on the Guardian newspaper who only ever present the Tamil Tigers’ side of the conflict and individuals such as Callum Macrae, Frances Harrison, Bruce Haigh and Gordon Weiss.

When all these so called “journalists” including our infamous Callum McRae were confronted by patriotic Sri Lankans ( both Sinhalese and Tamils)they did not have any answers, and simply disappeared. Rather than countering McRae with facts this Rajapaksa worshipper keeps on ranting and raving and attacking McRae’s integrity without any basis whatsoever. McRae keeps bringing out photo and video evidence made by the SL soldiers themselves and the evidence is mounting.
