Can ‘Fonny’ Fix Faulty Governance?

Sarath de Alwis

By Sarath De Alwis

According to the loquacious logician of the ‘Yahapalana’ government – Minister of Health Rajitha Senaratne, the President has requested Minister Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka to quit his ministerial portfolio to become army commander or overall commander for two years to discipline the country.

The idea is comical, senseless and monstrous. The signal it sends out is outrageous. Yet, the undeniable and evident truth that we must squarely confront is that the Sirisena –Wickremesinghe duumvirate is exhausted and has outlived its patch and purpose.

No doubt, in due course, there will be the usual back peddling and claims that rambling Rajitha misquoted and or quoted out of context. There will also be further explanations of the envisaged role of the Field Marshal.

Amidst the many mistakes this government has made some progress.  The Encomiast Intelligence Unit has made the following prognosis. “The risk of political instability will be high throughout 2017 as strains within the governing coalition, such as over a proposed new constitution, are set to increase. Fiscal austerity measures and tax increases implemented under an IMF programme will further dampen public support for the government and weigh on business sentiment. A new exchange-rate and inflation-targeting framework will support macroeconomic stability, but will come at the cost of a depreciating currency.

The common candidate elected President of the republic on 8th January 2015 was entrusted with the task of dismantling tyranny.  That was, and still is a complex task.

The painfully prolonged investigations in to the disappearances, abductions and murders during Mahinda’s watch, demonstrate the resilience of the deep, state political police apparatus that Gotabaya Rajapaksa installed after the end of the civil war.

The Rajapaksa dictatorship was a modern form of political domination. Gotabaya Rajapaksa perfected a political police that became the overarching instrument of governance.

Post 8th January 2015, our sanguine view of the future blinded us to the reality that  Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s  predominant instrument of power that helped neutralize opposition was not only intact but was functioning in high gear in a new survival mode. That made President Sirisena discover the inviolability of the ‘Ranaviru Honour’.  It compelled Justice Minister Wijedasa Rajsapakse to find hitherto hidden facets of judicial integrity.  Meanwhile the Prime Minister and the better part of his government found itself mired in an unbelievably stupid bondage.

Even before the parliamentary elections the UNP got working.  It was their ‘Janayugaya’! They got going with their own modern economic growth theory- of giving value to financial assets issued by their handpicked elite.

The idea of 8th January 2015 was to move from the rule of a privileged few to the rule by a selected group vetted by the movement for a just society headed by the late and much lamented Venerable Sobhitha thero that was accountable to the people.

The idea was to move from the rule of three brothers, Mahinda presiding, Basil procuring and Gota protecting to a new form of consensual rule by a coalition. A coalition where Maithripala presided and Ranil administered an accountable and transparent form of ‘good governance’.

But things did not pan out as we hoped. The new President decided that securing his political base in the SLFP was priority number one. The new Prime Minister decided that his top priority was to reward his cronies and   party loyalists in that order for the years that they spent in opposition. The regime transformation of 8th January 2015 only changed the intermediaries between the people and the regime. Instead of the brothers and their flunkeys we now had rule by two cliques one fawning on the insecure President and the other commanded by a beleaguered Prime Minister.

The autocracy has been replaced by a chosen group of politicians to whom politics is business as usual. Instead of the Rajapaksa autocracy we have a ‘parasitocracy’ that falls far short of honest democracy that we voted for and the genuine meritocracy we hoped for.

This ‘parsitocracy’ is the direct outcome of the current convergence of the two main political parties.  Even before the convergence, the two parties held similar views on matter economic and deferred on some nuanced cultural issues.

The politicians of the ‘yahapalanaya’ worked for no one but for themselves. The current comic opera in the SLFP is demonstrative of the self-serving governance objectives of the false messiah that we elected on 8th January 2015. The current SLFP parliamentarians stand neither for the party nor the constituency they claim to represent. The entire circus is centered on getting elected to parliament by resorting to whatever method that will win elections.

If the retired Lieutenant Colonel is to be replaced with a Field Marshal it is time for us to confront truth in all its harsh facets.

Hannah Arendt the Political Philosopher in 1967 wrote an essay published in the magazine ‘The New Yorker’ that was titled Truth and Politics.  Hannah Arendt who experienced Nazi tyranny first hand and later watched liberal democracies practicing deceptive democracy had a deep sensitivity to truth in public affairs. ‘No one’ she wrote ‘has ever doubted that truth and politics are on rather bad terms with each other, and no one as far as I know, has ever counted truthfulness as among political virtues. Lies have been regarded as necessary and justifiable tools not only of the politician’s or the demagogue’s   but also of the statesman’s trade.”

Hannah Arendt offers a solution to our present predicament with our faltering hopes for good governance and Rajitha’s strange logic.

“Only the occasional  liar will find it possible to stick to a particular falsehood with unwavering consistency; those who adjust images and stories to ever-changing circumstances will find themselves floating on the wide-open horizon of potentiality, drifting from one possibility to the next, unable to hold on to any one of their own fabrications.”

Rajitha Senaratne presumes that we are a bunch of imbeciles immune to his lack of factual objectivity. He described Field Marshall Sarath Fonseka as being eminently suitable to infuse discipline to our dysfunctional democracy. Rajitha Senarathne and Wimal Weerawansa formed an entertaining duo during the Presidential election of 2010. They   were the most vociferous critics of Presidential Candidate Sarath Fonseka whom they accused of wrong doing in the ‘Highcorp’ affair and profiteering with his son in law. Rajitha Senaratne belongs to a political class that is convinced of their unique and hegemonic ‘right to rule.’

Making the gruff Field Marshal to maintain public order is an appealing proposition even to this writer who is sorely tempted to smash the TV screen whenever the nasal voiced secretary of the GMOA appears on it.

That said, the solution lies elsewhere. This make believe coalition government has lost its credibility. This Parliament should resolve to dissolve itself and allow a true realignment of contending forces. People decide on constitutions. Writing constitutions is not the business of do-gooders.

Right now, field Marshal is UNP. IF he comes to Sirisena’s side, it will be a Chess move. Trade Unions are highly politicised. IT is not workers rights. It is just trade union leaders manipulating workers for the benefit of their own promotion and also for the benefit of the corresponding politician.

I think all these Trade union activity is mostly by Mahinda Rajapakse followers.

IF country is to develop, even the trade unions need to be destroyed, simply because they are highly destructive and against the interests of the country.

The way to clean up Sri Lanka is to go after ALL THE CORRUPT POLITICIANS and this is what General Fonseka should do first.

Just as Sri Lanka has been looted and beggared by corrupt politicians, trade unions have been used and destroyed by corrupt politicians of all the parties..

First put all the Mahinda Jarapassa family of thieves and their cronies who looted Lanka behind bars and then Mahendran and Wickramasinghe who looted the Central Bank.

SF needs to subdue the TUs which have got out of hand as controlled with false promises by a desperate family group which has to do or die. So massive are frauds that they have to get back power to stifle further exposure. If SF handles the deceived ad misled TUs he would have done a good service for SL once again

What matters is the person ‘s charactor. He is a well displined and winning charactor. It is the right authority if president would appoint him with powers. That is timeworthy to get the nation back in to tracks.

I hope he will prove a worthy successor to the great ranjan wijeratne who pulverized the jvp terrorists and together with gen. waidyasekera chased the ltte terrorists from the eastern province.

sf has a much easier task as he has only to deal with militant trade unionists

A good translator of the Presidential Secretariat should translate this in convincing Sinhalese to Prez Maitreepala Sirisena so that he would understand the pros and cons of his own decisions. He should get out of the shadow of PM Ranil W, and act honestly if he has any respect for democracy!

“Nondi Kuthiraikku Sarukkinathu Saaddoo.” (Lame horse blamed the slippery floor, not its leg). Yahapalanaya has virtually declared emergency and have brought back the most brutal commander in the history of the Rapist army to massacre its own citizens. It is well known some criminal are organizing protests with Biryani parcels. Individual funding to bring the government to stand still is understandably punishable. Yahapalanaya, who is well known to work to save criminal who engage in massive crimes is little by little advancing in the techniques of suppressing the lawful protesters, but not isolating and punishing the criminals.

Joint Comedy Club has been repeatedly predicting fall of government though its has three years to complete its mandate. End of last year, Dinesh told the army may rebel. Recently, Tissa Vitharana said either people or army may rebel. These are open threats against the government. It is well known Old Royals made a March from Peradeniya to Colombo by issuing Biryani parcels and Arrack. Many meetings held at Narahenpita and Nugegoda had the same organizational tactics. Old Royal attempted to frame cases in North, like Sampanthar breaking army barrier, somebody finding a suicide jacket, Allva Kuzhu reviving tigers, in Chunnakam a Policemen went in a store to stop a fight was cut, two university boys were shot as LTTErs, Sumanthiran M.P, NPC CM -CV, Sampanthar were targeted under the name of LTTE……It is meaningless to list that many.
Yahapalanaya is not willing to listen to people. It is ignoring those voted for it. For many months, protects are going in many ways without any response from government. SAITAMA, University students, Harbor workers, Hangbangtota Harbor workers protest, Graduates protest, Tamil relatives of disappeared, Tamil Land losers, Tamil Prisoners relatives, Meethotamulla, ….. Government handles these protests in its own way.

This government is not using ‘Fonny’ to fix Faulty Governance. They are going to use him to save/protect the faulty government from a possible rise of what Kumar David called ‘Peoples Power’. ‘Yahapalanaya’ is a sugar coated bitter pill. During the first hundred days people enjoyed the sugar coating and now people are more or less forced to chew the bitter part. Those who are behind the regime change know very well that people will not like the bitter part and react. Do you think those who invested for the regime change will just watch ‘Peoples Power’ crumbling this government?

Looking at what is happening to my country I cannot say ‘May Venerable Sobhita thero attain Nibbana’. Instead I say ‘Let him rot in hell for trillion years and make Roti’.

I thought it is Tamils who were tricked to do this treachery. Didn’t you read many “loony thamils” proudly brag on CT it is they brought this government? They yet to see the Thirukkai vaal markings on their back. Ponni will stmp that soon on all backs. I missed Chandrikathasan for long time.

I was never aware Sobhita Thero went to North-East to ask for vote.

This is only the indication of missing Leader Prabhakaran.

I cannot believe he did not know the calibre of persons he was bringing into power.

January 7th , a group of people opposed the Chinese organized Industrial zone deed signing. However, these protesters were met by mobs of government supporters, who reputedly attacked them with clubs and fists. The monk-led demonstrators fought back by throwing rocks. The police, meanwhile, found themselves in the middle of the fray, using water cannons and tear gas to disperse the crowd. Ambulances were seen carting away injured demonstrators and law enforcement officers. – as reported in Forbes. Hangbangtota(Mahampura?) port union protests was manhandled. The Navy commander vice admiral Ravindra choked a journalist Dilip Roshan unprovoked. Ranil praised Ravindra and asked to set up a special navy camp in the port to keep under control of future protest.

In Meethotamulla, government Gazetted to bring sanitation service as emergency service in order to beat back protesters. Even in Old Royals time, though Tamils were deprived, regime Sinhala Citizens people had right to protest against basic rights like these. So from the time Yahapalanaya came to power, in many ways Yahapalanaya and Joint comedy club has been playing “கொடா கண்டன் – விடா கண்டன்” game.( Joint Comedies were not ready relent and Yahapalanaya was not ready to give in). That game has now led to call back Ponni in. Ponni is categorized as war criminal with another 41 in the March, 2015 withdrawn OISL report. It is said he is having problem in getting Visa to foreign countries. Ponni’s brutal record in Jaffna as a Brigadier elevated him to General Post under Brother Prince. Yahapalanaya is developing as big juggernaut very fast. If this is the return of the history, with in two years of power change, it is too quick and big disappointment.

Fonny should go after all the corrupt politicians who have looted the country and also the corrupt heads of institutions and judges who have failed to convict a single member of the corrupt Mahinda Jarapassa family. He should also go after Mahendran and Ranil Wickramasinghe needs to be held accountable for the Bond Scam.
It is corrupt politicians and their minons who are the main problem and responsible for garbage problems, massive debt crisis of the country and galloping ECONOMIC INEQUALITY and poverty, inflation and rupee depreciation.

Sri Lanka labour unions should be pushing for a living minimum wage of 1,500 per day for workers in all industries and services, particularly in tourism sector.

What should we do if the people are sheep, with scheming goats leading them by the nose?
That said, the retired Lt.Colonel and the Field Marshal should have been locked up in the same cell long ago.

You are on the spot Mr De Alwis.

This failed Govt has once again proved that they are incapable. This should be handled by a top class intellectual of the calibre of Late Lalith Athulathmudali or Gamini Dissanayake according to my opinion

Jayantha, not taking anything away from your thought.

If Gamini Dissanayake and Lalith Athulathmudali were good leaders, then why are we in this situation now ? Surely, our Nation would be in a fine place by now.

      Cheers.

        Hi Vishvajith

Late Lalith A and Gamini D never had the opportunity of governing this country due to their untimely deaths. I can remember when I was a schoolboy how well and intelligently Lalith A ran his ministries the toughest ones in the country keeping all trade union actions away. As Ministers they did extremely well.

As a schoolboy I had the rare privilege of talking to Lalith A at a private function. He just came up to me and had a brief chat with me. In a nutshell what he asked me was what I am studying for and what my ambitions are for the future where I can contribute to the nation. he wished me good luck and walked away.

        Thank you

“Rajitha Senaratne presumes that we are a bunch of imbeciles immune to his lack of factual objectivity.”

Nothing wrong with that presumption, when people like Sarath De Alwis and his ilk genuinely believed what he stated below and propagated it among his network……

“The idea of 8th January 2015 was to move from the rule of a privileged few to the rule by a selected group vetted by the movement for a just society headed by the late and much lamented Venerable Sobhitha thero that was accountable to the people.

You beloved leaders and their men what they did was, blocked and locked the lives of innocient people keeping them in smelly air caused by GABAGE DUMPs CREATED by Gotabaya the most abusive srilanken in modern srilanka. Anyways, just let these poor people to live in that area alone is beyond all ethics and morals to the eyes of civilized cultures.

JO men and their stupid supporters of your nature, will have to face it in the next few months.

I never voted for any parties, but I worked us being out of the country, in driving away the MR et al.

That we still do, since we are fed up of uneducated, uncultured rascals.

I would love if Fonny would take control over security issues. Then we will have to see, FCID to speed up getting Rajapakshe men to jail.

That is long due. Thadjudeen mother s torments will have no patience anymore.
Please talk to you family… they will show you the way.

Sarath de Alwis predicted: “No doubt, in due course, there will be the usual back peddling and claims that rambling Rajitha misquoted and or quoted out of context.”

Spot on! The Island of 27 April: “Social Empowerment and Welfare Minister S.B. Dissanayake yesterday said President Maithripala Sirisena recommended in a lighter vein that Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka be given the responsibility to deal with emergency situations.
Addressing SLFP media briefing at the SLFP headquarters at Darley Road, Minister Dissanayake said that President Sirisena’s recommendation was a mere joke. There was no reason for anyone to be concerned about the president’s comment at the weekly cabinet meeting, Minister Dissanayake said.”

    S B Dissanayake is worried.

Fonny is a military man and a failed and defeated politician who could not get even 20,000 votes at the election but appointed as MP through the back door with very high perks to do the dirty work for Ranil and Maithripala. His military mentality will cause chaos in the country. This is a democratic country and army methods will have negative impact on the country as a whole. Army discipline for university students to help meet future challenges and make better citizens was stopped by this govt: Cracking down on protests with force is not the solution but solving problems and issues through negotiations and understanding each others views with patience is what the govt: must do.

    Sarath’s angst is understandable.

On 08 January 2015 we changed a regime projected as immersed in corruption, nepotism and culture of impunity.

The replacement is no different. No prosecutions because they want some of their own men to go free. They have difficulty dismantling the well entrenched parallel government consisting of the armed and police services.

I can’t understand this mand’s mindset. What is the need to analyze if Fonseka can fix a problem. When he not even been appointed. What was Sarath doing when Rajapaksa’s slaughtered the Tamils. He has become cardboard hero. Thanks to Yahapalana. Don’t write garbage. Rest if you have time to waste.

How to fix this faulty governance? The citizens are pushed into a politically fortified empty economic vacuum as slaves. Politicians are in charge using HR violations and corrupt practices emptying treasury. Faulty Towers tricks will not work. The next intended govt. must announce that all ill gotten wealth will be taken away from all the parliamentarians and for abusing powers civic rights will be taken away. If people support this move, perhaps political genetic engineering could be introduced to recover from impending apocalypse.
