Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith’s Mouth Shuts When It Should Open & Opens When It Should Shut

By Shyamon Jayasinghe

Shyamon Jayasinghe

“To learn to speak up when you are expected to do so and be silent when uncalled is a simple commonsense art that comes naturally to ordinary folk. Persons in dignified positions of society are measured by the people along a scale of following this rule.”

High Office

Our Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith holds the highest office in the Catholic Church in our country. By virtue of his position, he holds a direct link to the Holy Sea at Rome. I get the instinct that this gentleman isn’t conscious of his eminent position and doesn’t bear the required dignity of being its incumbent.

The Silence

Along with other similar religious dignitaries,  the broad civil community in our country looks up to persons of his eminence to give leadership in voicing opinion, warning, and advice during times of national crisis. However, Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith didn’t see any reason to open up, as all others did, when the President of our country put the island into a total mess by violating the constitution once and twice and three times; appointing a rogue government and sending the legitimate Prime Minister home. Even previous to this, our Cardinal never uttered a word on almost every tragic occasion. Sarath Nanda Silva has been a better boy. On the other hand, recently, we see the Cardinal butting in and needlessly attacking Western countries for interfering in Lankan matters. God knows why he did that at this point in time.

‘Western Power Intervention’

The Cardinal’s speech at a book launch for Revd Banagala is out circulating in video all over the world. Listeners are bemused and I am amused. The Cardinal gets nasty social media comments and this should not happen. Naturally, would this happen when he humbugs about Western power intervention at a mere book launch totally unrelated to the subject of the book. How did Western conspiracy to divide our country come in at this moment in time? There isn’t any such issue at all in public discourse right now.  Only Wimal Weerawansa can talk off the tangent as our Cardinal did that evening in Colombo. As indicated above therefore, Malcolm’s  intervention was over a  non-event. Malcolm Ranjith did have in the past many a desperately needed moment to intervene, which he avoided in silence. To save him discomfort I will not enumerate them.

Untruths

Malcolm Ranjith has uttered untruths  at the launch. He stated that Buddhism is like a big tree and that his religion and other religions are harmoniously coexisting on the branches. This is an utter untruth and even a school kid knows that.  Christian evangelists are being charged by Buddhists over alleged attempts to convert. Some Buddhist extremists  have burned down such churches sparing the devotees inside. Bodu Bala Sana and the Ravana Balaya, spurred allegedly by Pohottu guys, have pounced on Muslim mosques many a time and burnt them down. In the Kandy District Muslim villages and towons were torched just last year. Is that the perfect co-existence you talk of  (Lassanata ekamuthuwen  jeewathwenawa) Cardinal?

Isn’t that a lie also with reference to broader inter-community relations? If the different people in Sri Lanka live so harmoniously eating mangoes from the same tree why did the thirty -year war take place-destroying the whole economy and destroying so many lives and billions  worth of property?

In fact, the critical problem in our country is that its  different peoples cannot regard themselves as one. Extreme Sinhala nationalists think that Sri Lanka is a Sinhala Buddhist country and that other groups have to live in sufferance of that ‘reality;’ one stupid guy in London called Wimal argued that “minorities are our visitors.”

‘Buddhism Superior’

Malcolm Ranjith stated at this point that more than any other religion Buddhism teaches us to live in harmony. He has let down Jesus Christ here by a relative comparison, which is  both unnecessary and false. Isn’t he acting demeaningly here to gain popularity points before a dominantly Buddhist audience? Isn’t that cheap? Should the highest dignitary of the Catholic Church in Sri Lanka behave so cheaply? Furthermore, isn’t he also underestimating the intelligence of his audience who can smell instantly that the Cardinal was trying to pull their legs?

Human Rights

As far as I know the only situation where Western powers are intervening  is  on the subject of alleged war-time HR violations. Doesn’t the Cardinal understand that HR violations are an accepted provocation for international intervention? He cannot be ignorant of that as it is pretty much a common experience today.

Hence, the Cardinal was humbugging when he said sometime ago that there is nothing called HR to fuzz about. If a future BBS-type government puts the Cardinal on a burning stake due to his Christianity should he not resort to international intervention over  a serious HR violation? Would he, then, tell any Western power to keep off and let him live harmoniously on the mango tree? Or allow him to hang smiling and stoically on the burning stake?

Golden Rule

To learn to speak up when you are expected to do so and be silent when uncalled is a simple comonsense art that comes naturally to ordinary folk. Persons in dignified positions of society are measured by the people along a scale of following this rule.

I am afraid, I can give the Cardinal just 5 plus on a scale of ten.

Cardinal Ranjit is a Catholic Cardinal representing the Catholic Church. Over the last 20 odd centuries, the Catholic Church has committed crimes at a much higher level, and the Catholic Cardinal Ranjit is following that tradition. See how the Catholic Church cooperated with the Catholic Hitler and Catholic Mussolini. Just go to you tube and search Chris HUTCHINS Crimea by the Catholic Church. You will get a summary.

The Catholic Church is a Cult. Ask any Jew.

Catholic church is a hierarchical shindig ……….. how did Malcolm Ranijith get to the top?

The same way Mahinda, Sirisena, Ranil …………. got to the top of their respective hierarchical edifices.

If there were aberrations ……… they were the rarest of the rare exceptions to the rule

We are just talking ……….. human traits here ……………

This may well be the reason why that Charles brother led Kandula program did not want to criticise ballige putha Rajapakshe any more . They even supported Gotbaya s programs lately.
      :
I think no religious leaders should take any side of politics.
      :
They if they are real leaders should treat almost everyone neutral but when any parties or men break the laws, there they should stand up from the long slumber and save the naton.
      :
This we have not seen any of the recent events destined this nation.
      :
Sinhala politicians go and worship KANDY so called CHAPTER monks – that often, to be on the books. or send the message across the country that they hold that much respect to the religion.
      :
But ones that go to those temples that often, are the ONES do all harms to this nation.
      :
Best example – public SECRET – Rajapakshes visit TEMPLES more than they are used to go to their toilets and washroom.
      WHY ?

You are right that Rajapaksa is one of the worst alleged war criminals on earth and Sinhalese should be ashamed of. By going to temples and visiting Monks, Rajapaksa cannot wash off his sins for several generations.

Bamarasiri, It is interesting that you suggest that we ask a Jew for evidence that the Catholic Church is a cult. In the process you unwittingly (you have no wits anyway) reveal your identity, you blood ritualising neechaya.

There is no other cult bigger, more organised, more universal and more corrupt and conspiratorial, than the devil (Antichrist) worshiping Jewish cult. You and Native Vedda are clear examples of this cult among us.

So leave the Catholic Church alone, you hymie bastard.

      • 3
        1

        Saimon,

Amarasiri is not a Jew. Amarasiri does not think that Native Vedda is a Jew either. Ask 100 Jews and see what they have to say about this Catholic Cult, who turned a Jew, who wanted to liberate their “homeland” , which they stole from the Philistines and Cannonites from the Romans.

They differ. Go and ask Martin Luther and the Protestants.

By the way, are you in the business of supplying boys to the Catholic Church?Therr is a huge demand for boys by the Catholic Church, the Cult.

what the Cardinal says is correct: by and large there is religious harmony in the country because Buddhism is a tolerant religion and other religions are practiced freely. Incidents have been the work of small minorities of extremists but the full picture is one of tolerance by all communities towards each other.

The virtues of Buddhism, and their salutary effect are granted; but that doesn’t render the sly and crooked Cardinals double talk honest.
      .
I think most of us know the distinction between the “Buddha Dharma” and Sinhala-Buddhism. I haven’t got the time to read Sharmini Serasinghe’s article now, but I feel that she must have made that distinction.
      .
Sinhalese culture also deserves deep respect – but don’t add the Dharma as a necessary component of it..

This cardinal of the Catholics is a disgrace for the catholic community of SL. He too is a stooge of MR. He DOES NOT stand for the good of the country.
He doesn’t promote harmony among all the religions in SL.
    Pope should disqualify him

This Cardinal is a joke. 1966 police officers went into Saint James church and beat the parishners. Many catholic priests were mutilated . Many Catholic Churches were bombed in the north east. I am drafting a letter to propende fide in Rome to ask him to shut his mouth. 18 prients and seven nuns came from my family. In killinochi Varod Varod was establish by my nephew Father Albert to take care of the wounded and orphans during the war. He should read Sacro sanctum concilium Vatican II

      “Pope should disqualify him”……???

Should the Pope appoint Sirisena or Mahinda Rajapaksa, even though they are not Catholics as Honorary Cardinals for Sri Lanka? After all, that is what Cardinal Ranjit is trying to do. After all, the Popes are infallible

You all are disgrace to your religions whatever they are. When are you going to learn to respect other people’s right to expression?
Malcolm Cardinal has many times voiced against greediness and opportunism of politicians. He urged them to work for the greater good of underprivileged people. Do you have selective hearing? Or are you prejudiced against him for his close rapport with Buddhists?
One day in the future, he will make an essential part of people’s quest for new leaders as his ideas tally with many like-minded people.
One thing is sure. Sinhalese Buddhists will never vote Ranil and his UNP gang ever again.

The hapless Cardinal has never heard that old saying, ‘better to keep your mouth shut and let people doubt your foolishness, than open it and prove it’. Malcolm Ranjith is the Donald Trump of the Sri Lankan Catholic Community. He is blind to the divisive elements that operate spreading discord. He lives in denial of all the indignities that have been heaped on the Christians and Catholics of Sri Lanka.

So, here’s the double whammy: the Mahanayakes on on side, the cardinal on the other. All we need now are a few Pusaris and some Mad Mullahs to bring about Armageddon in our Paradise.

Good Catholics, nothing will change his appointment for a very long time, unless the good Lord intervenes.

    Pray!

    • 1

      Spring Koha,

If good Catholics want to change Cardinal Ranjit, perhaps they should supply with young boys, as prayers to the Lord seem to have little effect. Is the Good Lord ignoring the prayers because the Catholic Church is a Cult?

The Catholic Church is the biggest Cult, but the Lord is ignoring the Cult. Didn’t the Cult support two cult members, Hitler and Mussolini, and the Lord finally pulled the rug under them?

I am surprised by the logic and reasoning of this article: here is a Catholic Cardinal who wants to build up close ties with the religion followed by most people of the country. He is showing that the catholic church wants to play a mainstream role in society. Cardinal Ranjith has also the courage to expose the wrongs committed in the past in the name of Catholicism. he is also willing to criticize money grabbing televangelist churches who are trying to create conflict in the country.

“Buddhism is a tolerant religion and other religions are practised freely. Incidents have been the work of small minorities of extremists but the full picture is one of tolerance by all communities towards each other.) (Above comment by Leslie)

This claim is hilarious. During the pogroms in 1956, 1958. 1977, 1979 and 1983 it was the yellow-robed monks who roamed the streets of Colombo armed with the voter’s registers identifying Tamil homes and businesses occupied/owned by Tamils. True Buddhism does not recognize race, ethnicity or language differences. It is a way of life that teaches to love all, not only humans but also non-humans. Buddha challenged the Hindu practice of sacrificing animals when performing yagam. When he was told that those animals will go to heaven, he confronted the Hindu priests asking why not then sacrifice your mothers and fathers because they will end in heaven! The moral is keep religion out of state. Asking for state help to foster Buddhism is an insult to Buddhism because it is implied it will not survive without state protection and patronage.

your latest example goes back 35 years. Many on this forum were not even born then. Do you know of any other non Muslim country that permits Muslims to marry and divorce according their religious laws, that allows their schoolgirls to wear a different uniform, where Purdah is permitted, where the call to prayer is not banned for noise pollution?
We have every possible religion and bizarre cults in the country. the most recent are jews but there are also jehovahs Witnesses, Born Again Christians, Parsees, bohrahs and Memons. Nobody among Buddhists are bothered except if they seek to sow disunity. Several Protestant churches in fact want precisely that: to create a religious conflict. I am proud that the cardinal has condemned such schemes and my regards for him and the Catholic Church has never been higher.

Surely Shyamon Jayasinghe should know by now that religious clergy have started using tactics used by big business.

Macolm Ranjit is a tragedy. As a religious man he should be giving expression to the highest ideals of the human race and inspire his flock to attain them. But this man is a disgrace to the Catholic religion, by his consistent behaviour as a spokesman for the thugs and murderers. This backward man has never added his voice on behalf of the innocents killed by the murderous regfime in the past. On the contrary he was feasting with those who had blood on their hands. This man should remove his frock and should be shown in his full nakedness as nothing but a common prostitute.

Oh Shyamon Jayasinghe,………what a bunch of sweeping and hasty generalizations you make! Very poor set of logical and lateral analyses .You overlook the fact that the Eminent Cardinal sees that far greater picture (with the help from his prayers to God, no doubt), at the wider context of the struggling Masses. He sees the constitution that you view as so very legitimate, as one that violates the rights of the Masses. Your consistent ad hominem and circumstantial ad hominem phrases belies the reality that Malcolm Ranjith IS OF the people, BY the people, and FOR the people (stuff that both Buddha and Jesus have been advocating for over 2000 years)!

Don’t you know for example, that Western powers only care for their monetary wealth for their own people? How they get it does not matter. they do not care for the death of our nation and the servitude we will have to endure under the intended greater regional S. Asian caste-systemed conglomeration.

And yes, Christian evangelists are at the forefront of the Western money-making scheme. Praying to God in their way will certainly show up the God Particle via Western monetary gain (so they entice people to convert asap); the more convertees, the more association in the Western monetary network- the greater the monetary investment gain.

Now Catholics on the other hand, are for the meek and humble and are hardly about money (well they were about it at one time, but after they achieved it with their colonial technique, their network eventually socialized). Thirty year war happened because Hindus wanted to establish the caste-system on egalitarian soil. Catholics saw the danger, and so continue to uphold the interrelation between Jesus and Buddha. So, put a lid on it yourself, dear Shyamon!

Blaming western powers is a village trait employed to lure the game godayas to feel jealous and then vote for some disingenuos politician. That brings me to my first observation. This cardinal comes from the game godaya class. In fact he was promoted up the ranks over rmuch more educated and learned priests of the time. My second observation is that he loves dictators. That is why he cannot say a word of appreciation for the democratic process and for the Wickremasinghe government that followed this process to the letter and finally won its battle. His love of dictators comes from that arch conservative branch of the catholic church of which he is a member. It is this branch that held sway over the Vatican and made sure that no priest who did not cede to their world view was ever promoted to high office within the church (That is how Malcolm became cardinal over the other more senior priests). Finally with the ascent of pope Francis this sect has been put in check. Many priests who were excommunicated because they did not tow the line to these monsters have been brought back. An arch bishop in south America who was shot dead while saying mass has finally been cannonized after stiff resistance by this group. His name is Ramirez. I called this arch conservative sect within the catholic church monsters without any hesitation due to the damage they have done the the image of the church globally. It is this sect that advocated the coverup of the sexual abuse scandal plaguing the church globally. In fact they still refuse the accept the idea that a priest who commits the crime of sexual abuse must be reported to law enforcement. To sum up our Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith’s tendencies stem from a much worse mind set that meets the eye.

Shyamon, you seem to be angry with His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith for placing the “Western countries” you worship, below Buddhism.
Your attack on him for speaking truth about Buddhism have made you even violating his right to speech and freedom of expression. Practice what you preach.
Cardinal’s rationalization that there is no need for West to teach us about human rights is very true, as it is the core concept of Buddha’s teachings, as appended below:-
    .
    1) In the 5th Century BC, in his first sermon called “Dhamma Chakkappavattana Sutra, “ Lord Buddha advised his disciples to be “Bahujana Hithaya, Bahujana Sukhaya (work for the well being of many, happiness of many)” which is the BASIS of human rights concept of the West!!!!!
    2) “Pancil” (five precepts) teaches the need to protect the right to life and property of other beings.
    3) “Ahimsa” means right to life and protection from suffering of yours as well as of others.
    4) The concept of “Karma” is to make people avoid committing prejudice. (If you do a bad thing to others, bad Karma will follow.)
    5) Metta (loving-kindness), Karuna (compassion), Mudita (sympathetic joy) and Upeksha (equanimity) are the four ways to protect human rights.
    6) The concept of “Maddhyama Prathipadaa – Middle Path” is to ensure social justice for every being which is in other words, protecting the right to resources for everybody by not over exploiting wealth but by sharing.
    7) Even before anybody heard about Christianity or human rights concept of the West, Lord Buddha gave equal rights and dignity to women, in a society where they were subjugated.
    8) Clean environment is everybody’s right. “Pirith” purifies the environment. Buddhism goes much further than the West by recognizing human rights of not only of human beings but also of animals and plants.

“If the different people in Sri Lanka live so harmoniously eating mangoes from the same tree why did the thirty -year war take place-destroying the whole economy and destroying so many lives and billions worth of property?”
The LTTE terror campaign started and dragged on for thirty years because some foreign powers wanted it. After wiping out LTTE, people in Sri Lanka got a golden opportunity to live harmoniously eating mangoes from the same tree but unfortunately there are elements with vested interests who do not like to see that happening. Some of them like war not peace. Some of them like to promote animosity between Demala and Sinhala people for their political survival.
Interestingly, there was a news item in a Sinhala newspaper which said, after flood ‘Demala people say WAANGA to hamudawa and PONGA to TNA’ (Demala people welcome the Army and say get lost to TNA)

LTTE was a product of Sinhala Buddhist Apartheid State terrorism and denial of democratic values. After seeing the Sinhala state terror, LTTE was helped and armed by Indian leaders including Indra Gandhi and MGR. Do you think that Indra Gandhi supported a terrorist organization? Why did Rajiv Gandhi ordered Indian fighter jets to fly over Jaffna?
