The Catholics Bishops’ Conference in Sri Lanka has opposed the 20th amendment and called for a new constitution in the country.

Issuing a statement today, the Catholics Bishops’ Conference has called for the appointment of an independent constitutional council to draft a new constitution and said drafters must plug the loopholes that can lead to multiple interpretations.

Is it unanimous decision taken by Catholic Bishop’s conference. Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith a well known lackey of Rajapakses is in favour of 20th amendment.

How can it be unanimous if Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith is in favour of 20th Amendment, unless he has ceased to be a Bishop?

Bravooooooooooooo… another good news for the day. Later is better than never. I wonder why srilankens are no different to the SLOTHs in amazona. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2DdFF9yG0xo

I have a greater respect on CHRISTIANITY than any other religions. May well be because I am connected more with the adherents of that religions in my day today life. But as many in the country, I was also born to a FAMILY whose RELIGION is branded as ” BUDDHAGAMA”.

That is why I wonder why Rev Malcom Ranjith was that backward, not having uttered a single word against his pay master”s so called constitutional AMENDMENT 20A. How can some RELIGIOUS leaders be that submissive to the politicians ?

Srilanken CHRISTIANS were made permanent fools by RM s FAKE leadership. I dont see any big difference him and THAT CHIEF MONK in Kelaniya Viharaya. Both worked like blind men to bring CRIMINALS back to power.

It is nice to see, at least TODAY they seems to be waking up from their long slumber. One good guy among CT commenters added lately, people in other countries would have gone on protests on and on, but srilankens would not even notice the REAL DANGER of proposed 20A.

The critical mass for GR’s victory in 2019 was provided by Christians. Otherwise Sajith would have equaled GR. Now they too are disgusted of GR’s insanity.

GR has lost his mandate to remain president. Get out now!

      Gatam,
GR’s victory in 2019 was provided by Muslim extremists.
“A Politician can get quite far in a democracy if he can convince the majority that they are victims of a minority and that only he can protect them”.
Zaran helped in creating the above situation in Sri Lanka.

        Lanka Canuck@

This may be the reason why Muslim srilankens have not come forward yet to share their opinion in terms of 20A. They dont care much about democratic rights.

Nearly 2 mio muslims live in the country. That is half of the population of the tamil srilankens.
        :
However they are too late to come forward and express their opinion. Not just about 20A, but about anything… may be Muslims feel if they open up,.. they are beaten by RAJAPAKSHE CRIMINALs.
        .
I cant understand NEVERTHELESS Ali Sabry or the like to do BAGGAGE BOY style jobs for the govt.- HE DOES NOT HAVE SELF RESPECT at all.

I believe, Saharan should have had closer links with RAJAPKSHEs.
        .
May well be that 52 day coup – was connected with EASTER SUNDAY disaster.
        .
Today, there is a decent opposition in this country. Until Nov 2019- srilankens were ruined by JOINT opposition. They never allowed GOOD governance govt to do their job. They managed almost everything better until Easter Sunday Disaster occured.
        :
I think nobody else, former President should be hung for EASTER SUNDAY DISASTER. Not a single srilanken would not disagree if SIRISENA would be hung for not having taken due actions against the DISASTER.
        .
I DONT THINK THAT HIS FOREIGN TRIP IN April 2019 was for medical treatment. He had no whatsoever health problems. But they were speculations that he worked like a headless chicken since 52 coup ended up him being the LAUGHTER stock to entire world.

      Dear LM & GATAM,
      .
Yes, this statement also coming is useful. It is important to tell the Rajapaksas that the selfish Cardinal doesn’t represent all Christians in Sri Lanka.
      .
Numerically, the Anglicans don’t matter, but they have some influence. Their new Bishop of Colombo, Rt Rev. Dushantha Rodrigo is to be almost “privately consecrated” (owing to the COVID) at the Cathedral on Bauddhaloka Mawatha on the 15th of November. He enjoys a good reputation. The Methodists? The Baptists? Lots of other groups.
      .
Eran Wickremaratne is doing a good job representing them – avoiding unnecessary “foreign talk” – speaking in Sinhala and dressing in a National suit of sorts. It’s good that he sticks to Economic Affairs, but now’s the time to speak out on Democracy.
      .
Also, it would be good to hear Dr Harini Amarasuriya making the point that the NPP that she represents is wider-based than the JVP. The most effective way for the JVP to assure us that their violent past has been left behind is to embrace this somewhat different identity.
      .
Lanka Canuck, we must remember that “Muslim extremists” are a tiny minority of their members. And how do we show up the hypocrisy of this “cattle slaughter ban” which is to combine with imports of beef, and the consumption of other forms of animal protein.

“The critical mass for GR’s victory in 2019 was provided by Christians. Otherwise Sajith would have equaled GR.”
Check your assumptions (on proportion of Roman Catholics and Protestants who would have voted for GR) and check your arithmetic (the Christian vote difference between the main candidates) compared with GR’s majority.

There is some way to go before he loses his mandate on any count.
I think that he will lose his moral authority before long but will not go in a hurry.

In theory HEP is not obliged to listen to any Tom, Dick or Harry because he received a clear mandate from the voters to do what ever he thinks good for the country. It is only logical to let him proceed with his agenda. Sorry mates.

But no mandate is open ended to do ‘whatever’ he thinks. In fact GR accepts that position becos he wanted absolute discretion to dissolve parliament after just one year even though country has voted just a year ago, according to the original 20A draft, which he admitted was his alone as the Cabinet disowned authorship.
Hence it follows that if the mandate is not what the voters intended, they could create an outcry to stop his endeavour to do ‘whatever’.

So IF HE THINKS that giving some part of the country as freehold is within his mandate, you mean he can do so.
There is a limit for him to do ‘whatever’ just now, but by trying to make the Parliament and Judiciary totally subservient with his 20A, that is his final aim.

        True.
But JRJ did (at least until he messed himself up in the wake of the 1983 pogrom).

You are being harsh on Vatican.
Much has changed in the latter half of the last century.
It cannot order Catholics about the way it did pre-WW2.
Latin America changed since Liberation Theology and Vatican had to yield however reluctantly.
Also it has had relatively progressive Popes (the short-lived John-Paul I) and the present one, who has made a difference.

Despite Vatican 2 it is still an extremely wealthy and powerful corrupt theocracy. It holds total sway over the minds of billions and demands complete obedience.

I think that it is a rather static view of the Church.
As the Buddha said, everything is subject to change.
In my life time I have seen important changes that have occurred in its attitude to several matters.

Apparently Mahinda has written to the Chief Priest of Thirupathi to make a statement opposing 20A.

They are going to mobilise some leading Hindu Priests and make a statement.

Namal may convert to Hinduism…to leverage Tamil Hindus…he recently visited Kathirgaamam with his wife

Amarapura-Ramanya Nikayas have made a strong statement, the Catholic Bishops too have said that. Where is the Cardinal Malcolm hiding, he is quiet on 20A? What about the Islamic Moulavies? What about Hindu Priests? Are they all sleeping with 20A under their pillows?

Amarapura-Ramanya Nikayas and the Catholics just woke up ….so give some time for Cardinal and Islamic Moulavies.

As for Hindu priests they may be waiting for Rahu kaalam to pass and for the auspicious time .

Buddhist1: My answer to your two questions. (1) “Islamic Moulavies” – Have you noticed the “CAP” they have to cover the head? That can be worn, in whatever way they think and fitting to suit the “Times” and the “People”. (2) “Hindu Priests” – They “Believe” and “Pray” very many “Gods” to “Ask” and “Get” whatever they please, depending on the “Powers” those “Gods” possess. That “CULTURE” prevents these two categories from making a “Firm” decision. “FLEXIBILITY” and “ADOPTABILITY” to get a “BENEFIT” from the direction of the wind blows is the “NORM”.

The views of the Bishops conference is identical with some of the views expressed by the elected representatives of the flower-bud tribe. If one believes in result orientation then one must have the structures for it. If a verbal decision is given in a particular instance and that is to be a binding decision then the Secretariat must articulate that as policy decision and circulate the same. Alas! we do not have smart bureaucrats but a set of “boorucrats”. An unlimited Constitutional power is not an antidote for an inefficient machinery. On the contrary such power will be used by all the “Andares” (Court Jesters and the likes) to have their way even contrary to the expectations if the high and mighty. What happened in the Health Ministry recently is a good example. So! Axcellency! Don’t get your self axed.

The last sentence of the catholic-bishops-conference statement makes a mockery of the current situation.

The statement says “…..instead a new constitution needs to be the national priority at the moment…”

what planet are the Catholic Bishops living?

The national Priority at the moment should is
the current pandemic COVID-19 which is spreading fast in the country!
the impact of COVID-19 on the economy/jobs etc
    the rising inflation
    the strangling debt mountain
    stranded ME workers

there is no need for a NEW CONSTITUION for the PARLIAMENT to address these issues.

they can keep on borrowing from China under the new constitution !

Mahinda and Namal wish all Hindus Happy Navaraathiri
Mahinda is also donating Rs50,000 to 40 Hindu kovils.
Not sure if Rs50,000 for each Hindu Kovil or to be shared.

So we can soon expect a statement from Hindu Kovils condemning 20A
