Champika The Ultra-Nationalist Hardliner Shows Signs Of Mellowing

By Ranga Kalansooriya

Dr Ranga Kalansooriya

Dr Ranga Kalansooriya

I was watching an interview with Patali Champika Ranawaka on a private television channel on Wednesday night and it made me realized the extent of change that had happened to this one-time ultra nationalist hardliner.

With his erudite arguments and thoughtful opinions, Patali Champika proved the fact that he has converted from ultra-nationalism, or rather hardline radicalism to moderate statesmanship.

If one analyzes the journey from Janatha Mithuro to present day Jathika Hela Urumaya, this change is a paradigm shift. Together with his “Sansaara-buddy” Athuraliye Rathana Thera, Champika, to my mind, rewrote the definitions of Sinhala nationalism while successfully engaging in changing the political history of Sri Lanka on January 8.

Champika RanilDuring long conversations I used to have with him in early 90s via endless cups of plain tea at the Open University canteen where he was a visiting lecturer, I realized that this ‘rubber-slippered loner’ had a long way to go. I thought that he had a better understanding on politics than the engineering related subjects he taught at the university.

Nationalism is not a bad connotation. Neither does radicalism. Only radicals, who would think and act different, would come up in life and make a change in the society. If you google for definition of radicalism, it would provide plenty of results but the most common would be “radicalism is a noun that means political orientation of those favoring revolutionary change. In political science, the term radicalism is the belief that society needs to be changed, and that these changes are only possible through revolutionary means.”

But the danger comes when this sense of radicalism conjoins with violence as it seeks to reach its goal through “revolutionary means.” Radicalism has now become a menace, mainly in the Muslim world but it now slowly spreading to Buddhist societies as well. The emergence of Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) in Sri Lanka could not be considered in isolation where the 969 movement in Myanmar led by the radical monk Wirathu who was identified as Bin Laden of contemporary Buddhism by Times magazine and several other similar initiatives in Thailand. The commonality in many of these radical movements is the direct or indirect blessings from the State.

Strategically Champika – Rathana led JHU moved away from this ethno religious radicalism mainly after the completion of the war in May 2009. One could argue the fact that the emergence of BBS was to target the Muslim minority in Sri Lanka in the absence of Tamil militarism as the then political leadership sought a path to become the sole savior of Sinhala Buddhists. Though it was a strong coalition partner of the then UPFA regime, JHU was tactical in moving out of this trap and emerging as an acceptable force in a multi-dimensional political platform – mainly in the rainbow coalition.

This should be discussed in the context where federalism has again entered into the Sri Lankan political discourse. Many hardliners are of the view that this is the revival of Tamil Terrorism and especially Mahinda Rajapaksa camp is strongly advocating the opinion that it is a sign of LTTE raising its ugly head.

But I was happy to see one-time hardliner Champika explained it as an electioneering strategy of the TNA, comparing it with similar political objectives of those like JVP who had peoples’ revolution as their goal which never did materialize. But the irony of it is TNA is still playing its own nationalism card for elections, which could be justified from their own political point of view.

On the other hand the ultra-nationalism camp of Mahinda Rajapaksa is also spreading similar sentiments in its electioneering process. Saving the country from emerging Tiger threat has become the main slogan, not only of Rajapaksa himself, but his supporters as well. At a meeting of Buddhist clergy with Rajapaksa last week, a leading monk in his speech claimed that not only Tamil extremism, Muslim fundamentalism too is raising its ugly head in Sri Lanka and urged Sinhalese to be vigilant.

Champika had a solid argument to this issue. He compared the Tamils in the north with those in the upcountry. The effects of the war had made once academically and socially thriving North into a vacuum whereas the upcountry Tamils have gained much development through political means during the past thirty years, he said. Thus, the ultra-nationalist political leadership of both sides should understand this reality and unite to develop the war-affected Sri Lanka nation, he argued. This is the statesmanship, I suppose.

Nationalism is commonly viewed as a double edged sword: it can unite or fragment a country, says Pakistani writer Dr Moonis Ahmer. It is a sense of loyalty towards a nation which is shared by people having a common past, cultural or religious heritage. Nationalism seeks to identify a behavioral entity i.e. the nation and then to pursue certain political and cultural ethos, goals on behalf of it, according to Dr Ahmer.

His country provides a classic example where the state could play a vital role in dragging a country into radicalism for mere political gains. Pakistan is considered one of the leading breeding grounds for Islamic fundamentalism that led to Islamic radicalism and terrorism. But Jinnah’s Pakistan never had any features of fundamentalism, but rather totally opposite. It was a secular state and a thriving nation with multi-ethnic, multi-cultural and multi religious landscapes. His successor Zulficar Ali Bhutto, too, continued on the same path, but it was military dictator General Zia Ul Haq who changed the Pakistani doctrine into religious fundamentalism. Having captured power in a military coup and hung Bhutto through a kangaroo court, General Zia wanted to become the savior of Islam for his own political survival. Thus he changed the entire country from secularism to Islamic fundamentalism even through changing the school text books. Pakistan, within mere two decades, started reaping ‘benefits’ of this dangerous path. Sri Lanka just escaped from dictatorship; otherwise we would have followed the same path, probably in the name of Buddhism.

Politically incompetent leaders would use religion or ethnicity for their own survival. We have seen it in many parts of the world. Hitler is in the top of that list. There are some here, too.

Do NOT be fooled by this wolf in sheep’s clothing.

    This is all an act
    1) To win in a highly multi ethnic Colombo under a PR he needs a few minority votes too
    2) To show he is moderate in hopes of bagging the presidency in the future

The most dangerous man in politics today.

Not sure of Champika’s statement : ” The effects of the war had made once academically and socially thriving North into a vacuum….”

Northern academia, pre-colonization, was based on traditional studies – of cultural and poetic and lyricism and religion. It was academically and socially thriving pre-independence.

Once out-of-context Western academia came into Northern Heritage, lack of outlet for newly learned European academia created terrorism towards the rest of the country after independence.

Socially, the North withdrew into itself for over a century, with Vellalas gating up their communities so their gold could be secure.

Now with modern boats to brave the Palk, and airplanes, Northern are clamouring to have the share in the Tamil Nadu capitalistic success story.

Northern mindset is a basket case that is trying to pull the East with it too.

Only hope for Sri Lanka is for Socialism/Communism to take over Sri Lanka (with Northern and Eastern coast patrolled with Lankan armed forces to prevent the Tamil Nadu encroachment).

Champika’s former JHU-leanings was never really racial. It became racial due to Caste -Capitalistic- Northern Hindu-Tamils mindset, unable to interact with Socialist-egalitarian-Sinhala-Buddhism.

Therefore, we hope that Socialism (which will clear us of foreign loans), will win this time around (and will include Champika’s environmental-friendly wisdom).

      Muslims protest ‘racist’ remarks

Muslims in Sri Lanka have protested in the capital, Colombo against an alleged ‘discriminatory remark’ by a Cabinet minister.

Minister of Environment, Patali Champika Ranawaka, has reportedly described the Muslim minority in Sri Lanka as ‘outsiders’.

They called on the government to publicly announce whether the minister’s remarks are the policy of the government.

Mr. Ranawaka is a leader of the, Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) which supports President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s government.

The leader of the Muslim Liberation Front (MLF) Mujiber Rahuman, accused the government of ‘double standards’.

While appointing a cabinet committee to probe into minister P Chandrsekaran’s remarks President Rajapaksa is silent on Minister Ranawaka’s statement, he said.

      ‘Commission’ for Chandrasekaran

Minister Chandrasekaran, the leader of the Up Country Peoples Front (UPF), has publicly supported Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s protests over Sri Lanka’s military campaign in the North.

“Champika Ranawaka always speaks racism; provokes racism. Why is there no commission on Champika,” Mujiber Rahuman questioned.

Sandeshaya could not contact Minister Ranawaka for his response despite repeated attempts.

Muslim shops were closed in Colombo protesting against the minister’s remarks.

A Muslim businessman who attended the protest said that police threatened them to open the shops.

But Senior Assistant Superintendant of Police Premamalal Ranagala told BBC Sandeshaya that they only made a request to open the shops.

Kalam Enters Election Fray in Sri Lanka

          By PK Balachandran

          31st July 2015

COLOMBO: The late lamented Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam, former President of India and a much admired figure in Sri Lanka, has been drafted into the parliamentary election campaign now in full swing in the island nation.

A group of professionals backing Patali Champika Ranawaka, the energetic Lankan Minister of Power and Energy who is standing for election from Colombo district, has put in a full-page advertisement in the Colombo dailies describing him as a “trusted companion” of the “great visionary” Dr.Abdul Kalam. The ad said that Ranawaka will bring clean and affordable energy to Sri Lanka and ensure its energy independence, just as Kalam did in India.

The somber black and white ad is in two parts: The first, which has a picture of a smiling Kalam, declares: “ We salute you, Sir. One man with one mission brought energy security to his motherland, India, and lifted her to the level of world powers. His passion was to see his neighboring countries also reach energy independence and security, indigenously, affordably and cleanly, to ensure quality and value-added living.”

The second part, which has a picture of Kalam and Ranawaka in earnest conversation taken at the international alternative energy conference held here in June, says that Kalam believed in “one man”, namely, Ranawaka, “a son of the island soil, Sri Lanka, to bring about his vision into a reality one day.”

Addressing Ranawaka, the ad says: “We all professionals are proud of you, Hon.Minister Champika, for being a trusted companion of this great visionary and giving us the opportunity to be inspired by his great ideology just a few days ago before his departure for ever.”

The reference was to Kalam’s visit to Colombo in June, which was his last to Lanka. The jam-packed hall at the Galadari Hotel listened to the iconic Indian with rapt attention as he spoke about the practicability of using alternative clean energy technologies in his inimitable simple and telling way.

Groups from all over the island, especially, the Tamil north and the Tamil-speaking Muslim community, were eager to host him, but to their utter dismay, time was too short and he went away never to come back again.

Do you think Tamils, Muslims, Upcountry Tamils would vote for this public racists just because he has drafted late APJ A Kalam for his campaign. Does he think he is the Sri Lankan equivalent of the great soul?

            He should go back again.

And Kalam was a Tamil-Muslim too.

Well, he doesn’t take too much to political correctness, does he.

However, as this has the potential of creating violence in Sri Lanka, it is hoped that he will give some statement and solution to how he is going to solve any problems that concerns his views of “outsiderness”.

He probably means that Islamic cultural habits like the Burka is too different for Sri Lanka. Or Islamic capitalistic trends do not sit well with the more socially orientated SB’s. There are modern and politically-correct ways of dealing with these anomalies in Lankan society, like only one day of the week for the Burka, and the capacity (minus bribery and corruption) to collect due taxes. We cannot go back to the days of Anagarika Dharamapala, however respectable AD is for SB’s.

    DR Ranga K,
No amount of washing powder enough to clean this guy Pa.Cha.Ranawaka … I think he is the most opportunistic politician in Sri Lanka at the moment … He has no policies … He has only ambitions, one is being to be the president of SL … Look closely … He has no leadership skills or any other set of skills to be a leader … If ‘talk’ is the criteria selecting president, of course he has very good chance … He is only showing off as a ‘intellectual’ and a clean guy … But he has none of these qualities.

He JUST TALK about ‘energy formulas’ (even after six months, nothing came out),
Atomic energy (even Kalam was surprised about his knowledge of atom declared after K was dead),
Putting charging stations across the country to charge electric cars (yes! ELECTRIC CARS, How many in there?),
Running all in SL by gas found in the country by 2020 (while he is boasting, Cairns abandoned exploration and left),
Trying to exhibit his b.s. knowkedge loudly saying ‘Korea’, Rockfellar, knowledge base economy …etc.
So many bs’es dishing out from his mouth … But, nothing and nothing done in his tenure as energy minister … Coal contract at the moment under deep cloud according to a daily mirror report (even some participants in tender board refused to sit). Look at how comfortable with UNP guys who was ridiculed as Don Juans .. This Champaka has no shame or fear .. When you have no shame or fear, you could do anything according to a old saying … Champaka has proved it excellently …

Clean guy image is another facade promoted by him and his followers … If u look at news papers, his ads are propping out everywhere .. Daily Mirror, Lankadeepa… Then, TV ads … People in SL say his TV ads are stories and occupy probably the number one spot in TV … His new brilliant move was to send chocolate doughnuts to media outlets … Where are the money coming from, guys? Some estimate his spending around 140 million rupees … Some say Singapore trips helped … Some say mega deal helped … If he is the cleanest guy in the world as he wants us to think, he should declare where this mega money coming from …

He has no time to think about those at the moment … He is so scared that he would loose in the election, his mental faculties had already left …. No patriotic people support him … They have left … All UNPers and others who think Pa. Cha. Ranawaka can deliver Sinhalese Buddhists votes will desert him after the election because he miserably failed in delivering them … You tend to think that this is the end of his political carrier … No no and no … As shame and fear left him long time ago, he would come with some new thing … More time goes, his exposure in public make that difficult … He will try his best to survive and it is interesting to see how it play in the public after the election … Whoever named him after his birth, identified him correctly at the time …. Pa. Cha. Ranawaka …. Champaka….

It’s most welcome sign from Champika & Ven. Ratana to join hands with moderate Ranil & UNF, to defeat dangerous, opportunistic & most corrupt MR & Mafia for good & to unite the whole country & all Tamil, Muslim, Sinhala people, after the end of war.
MR Mafia or BBS cannot fool Sinhala people with cooked up hatred, false nationalism, so long as likes of Champika & Ratana are seen with UNF Good Governance.

    • 4
      2

Many people now say that BBS was a creation of Champaka to deny Muslim votes to MR … The coup to topple MR started by CR long time back … That is not because any love for the country .. He knew that MR would develop the country and his place in the political arena is timing out because of that. ‘Rajapakse’ name is getting established would be a threat to his political ambitions .. He was in a hurry to get to the top by toppling anybody whether he is good or bad …. This mind of him is exposed in public now …
But he has some strong qualities in his favour … One is that he had NO SHAME at all … Second one is that his skills in ‘talk’ ..yes! He can b.s. anytime anywhere while sitting or standing ….. No shame to b.s. had taken him so far … How further could he go? It all depends on the number of people who could be mesmerised by his ‘HIS EMPTY TALK’ …. As Robert R at top posting say
“The most dangerous guy in politics today ” …

Over a period of time anyone will get more enlightened and more mature. It is gladdening to note that this positive trend could be observed in Champika who could have a promising political future in the country.

It took nearly three decades for the psyche in the South to switch from ‘Sinhala Only’ to be accommodative of ‘Tamil also’ and also to give English it’s due place as a link language.

Even though the TNA speaks of federalism as an idealist goal, it has to be noted that it is equally emphatic about finding a solution within an undivided Sri Lanka with the emphasis on the term ‘undivided’. It is utterly wrong to equate federalism with division. Can anyone indicate a single instance of federalism leading to division in any country in the world? Look at even Canada which has the highest form of federalism in the form of a confederation. Quebec still remains a part of Canada and most probably remain so for ever. Look at neighbouring India with its hugely diverse languages, cultures and traditions. It is federalism that holds it together. Anyway let us not talk too much about federalism for the present and speak instead of strengthening the provincial councils, not just those in the North and East alone but all the nine of them. Greater devolution of power to the periphery is greater democracy. I am sure it will not take long for the people in the South to accept that reality.

Good and true. May it be known that India had 14 states in 1956. In 2015 they are 32. All additional states were carved out of the earlier 14 states. All states are in an undivided India. There is no division in Federalism. India stands as a monolith and will continue to remain so.

“Federalism is a contrivance to maintain national unity with the maintenance of state rights”.

“Fanatics are among the sincerest of men”, so said Swami Vivekananda. Has anyone seen or heard this quoted? Never. I found it in his speech 57 years back. It registered immediately and remained indelible because it is true.

It is a law of life to change. If one be honest, what one stood for in his callow youth, one discards with deeper understanding. Ven. Sobitha Thero now is not what he was 25 years back.

This is a much needed move from all aspects. I won’t say that Champika is so genuine or ideal character in the current context but arguably he could be one of the potential national leader in time to come in Sri Lanka. Considering what he has done so far, particularly in the ministerial posts that has held so far, he has practically proved something uniqueness to the people and many of people are in the view that he is a capable character in the contemporary politics in Sri Lanka. However, so many other things are left on him to become a successful national leader.

In an interview with Ceylon Today in early April 2015, among other things, MR responded as follows :

“…..Asked as to why he could not do anything about losing the Muslim votes Rajapaksa said “due to the actions of certain organizations such as the Bodu Bala Sena, Muslim people had a wrong impression about the government and especially about me. The opposition identified this and took the maximum advantage of it.”
Then we asked “If you were aware that what was happening was not correct, why did you fail to take any action to nip it in the bud?”
“Well, when we discussed this at the beginning in the Cabinet it was Champika (Ranawake) who went berserk and demanded not to lay a hand on the BBS or any such organizations that were mushrooming at the time. It was too late to do anything about it when I realized that Champika too was part of the conspiracy,” Rajapaksa asserted….. “

This same Champika is now singing from a different hymn sheet.

A long meeting with Ven. Athureliya Thera in 2009, revealed that he was an extremely intelligent person, intent on learning, capable of listening and ready to change his mind. I have not met Champika Ranawake. From what I have perceived through the media, he is an intelligent and intense man with a mission. However, his irrational nationalism, within the confines of Sinhala-Buddhism, was repulsive. I hope he is genuinely evolving towards a broader thinking not circumscribed by narrow boundaries towards an all encompassing concept of nationalism, which can accommodate the different facets of the national mosaic.

The TNA is trying to tentatively grope its way to find a way out for the Tamils, beyond the restrictive boundaries that past politics- both Sinhala and Tamil- had trapped them. It is yet a bundle of contradictions, dancing to different drum beats, from within and without. The dance lacks rhythm, grace, fluidity and beauty, as a result. It is somewhat grotesque too. It however,is on the right path to fall in line with the thinking and wishes of the people and take them forward. The TNA, as were its previous avatars, never had the capacity and capability to lead a people towards a vision that would elevate them. This is its handicap yet to a large extent. It is an inbred group that yet clones itself from within. It must become a enlightened mas movement and take in new blood that can bring in new thoughts and clear the cobwebs of history ( that has become a burden!).

Pearl Buck compared Hitler’s leadership with that of Mahatma Gandhi. Both were leaders and millions followed them. However, Hitler led them to their destruction, while Gandhi led them to a freedom that defined the uniqueness and beauty of being Indian to the world. With all its problems and contradictions, India is yet on the path to liberating itself from poverty, bigotry, casteism and lack of education . This was the path Mahatma Gandhi irrevocably set India and she has come very far as a result.

I hope a Tamil leader will emerge who can join hands with an enlightened leaders among the Sinhalese and Muslims to take this country forward. There are signs it will happen in the future. We have to yet evolve towards it.

    You are wrong Ranga.

This Sinhala racist is not mellowing. He is doing all what he is doing now, like invoking the good name of that great man Kalam, only to win ‘manape’ votes of the Tamils and Muslims.

Champika knows well that he is on a bad wicket. With just only about five or six Sinhala candidates likely to win from UNP from the Colombo district and that too in a scenario if UNP finshes on top in that district, he has no other way but to beg for the Tamil and Muslims ‘manape’ votes. True UNP supporters will not give their ‘manape’ votes to this fellow and their ‘manpe’ votes will go to true UNPers.

Champika’s parliamentary career will end this time unless Ranil or Maithri help him with a national list MP position. This racist deserves to be defeated.

      Sinhala Buddhist Patriot,

You have indeed proved that you really do not have the mental capacity for a grown up person! It is not a surprise that your ilk resort to associating the LTTE with people when you have nothing else to say. This is typical of people with myopic mindset, just like you!

Does examining posterior and burning it make one a gallant soldier?
You sound like as if you are most suitable and happy to examine others posterior. Join the Sri Lankan forces, you will be rewarded.

Dr.Ranga is wasting alot of good whitening trying to whitewash a tarnished character. He was shrewed, calculating, intelligent all true but has very low onmorality.
The kind that shit on the plate they eat.

Their plan was good except for one small miscalculation.
Return of Mahinda was that miscalculation.

They never expected a Mahinda come back and that turned the cart over.
If Mahinda was not brought back they could have easily broken the UPFA in to tatters and pick up some willing passengers, win the elections and live happily ever after.

Now he cuts a pathetic figure lost in the political wilderness and with nowhere to turn to. Thats why he was forced to shed his wolf skin.
Knowing that no UNPer is going to vote for himand he is on his own he goes on a spending spree and it was in todays papers that he has gone ‘nuts’doughnuts that is,with some expensive gifts going the otherway around because usualy its the b’day boy who gets the gifts!!!

Feel sorry about the writer Dr. RK. His effort to white wash this ultra opportunist wont make any sense. The writer can be happy just for the fact that Patali came to writer’s favorite political side to bring some misguided s/b votes to UNP camp.

Where is all the petrol from waste polythene that this charlatan poseur promised us in 2010?
The gas which was supposed to provide cheap electricity is probably still up his backside.
This guy once claimed that we have the lowest electricity tariff in the world.
All he wants is power, and he will do anything to get it. God save us if he gets anywhere near it.

    Dear People

Do not be fooled. Beneath Champika’s spotless Arya-Sinhala suit are the true stripes that he has earned over the years. Do not take your eyes off him for a moment or the arch nationalist could have your guts for garters.

He is just waiting for his chance.
