China-Rajapaksa Backers Get Control At Mainstream Newspaper

One of the biggest English newspapers in Sri Lanka has come under the influence from the Rajapaksa regime and their Chinese backers sources told Colombo Telegraph. Journalists and executives at the institution are alarmed by the infiltration.

These ‘agents’ are working as a unit inside the newspaper to stop over the top criticism of Chinese projects and the Embassy activities in Sri Lanka and promote Chinese interests. They also make sure the Rajapaksa regime and especially the first family gets significant coverage throughout the publication platforms.

One female member of the staff recently promoted has drawn the attention of sections of the newspaper management and staff because she maintains close links to former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and family including his two elder sons.

Colombo Telegraph learns that an email was widely circulated at the institution shortly before the promoted journalist joined the newspaper warning about her links to the ruling family and Beijing linked agencies in Colombo. However management decided to recruit the journalist and since her entry staffers say she has been given a broadly free hand with editorial content.

Her sudden rise within the newspaper has had the blessing of the First Family.

The journalist and social media accounts make her affiliations to the Rajapaksa family and at least one official in the Sports Minister’s inner circle noticeably clear. Her proximity with the powerful ruling family and the Chinese Government has helped the journalist to use that proximity to advance her career, Colombo Telegraph learns.

It is learnt that the journalist has managed to get favours from the Rajapaksas and has in return promoted them on the website of the publication. Her presence at the newspaper, together with a group of similarly Chinese-aligned reporters at the institution have been useful to curtail extremely critical articles about Chinese involvement in Sri Lanka. The journalist often backs Chinese Embassy positions on social media. Many reporters at the newspaper also travel to China a few times every year fully sponsored by the Chinese Embassy including spending money for souvenirs and gifts.

The senior journalist’s trysts with the Rajapaksa family include visits to Temple Trees on several occasions. Several times meetings have also been held at a hotel in Galle Face in Colombo with a senior officer. The official concerned has confided in some staff at Temple Trees about, what has since turned into “a close personal” relationship with the journalist, Colombo Telegraph learned from political sources.

The female journalist, who was recently promoted, has been accused by staff at the leading publication of using her close connection with the Rajapaksa Family and the Chinese to influence the management.

For many years the same newspaper online operations have also shown clear bias towards the Government of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Minister Namal Rajapaksa. The online operation is run by the sibling of a highly political artist and songwriter who engages in propaganda on behalf of the SLPP and the government.

Editor of the publication is well known for constantly giving in to requests to remove material from the newspaper website at the slightest requests of the Rajapaksa regime and regime loyalists. (Amila Karunaratne)

The idea is to establish Xinjiang style internment camps in Sri Lanka for Tamils, Muslims and medieval allergic Sinhalese.

Any journalist or member of the media who makes nice with the Rajapaksas, and becomes pally with them, has lost all credibility as a writer. No human being can write about them without showing bias, and their articles will always be written by watering down the negatives, when the writer strikes an unprofessional relationship with any member of the government. Professional journalists have to keep their distance, and not eat string hoppers with those they have to write about.

We cannot afford to be anti Chinese, anti Indian or anti West.
Anti Rajapaksa is one thing, anti Chinese is quite another.
If you want to counter Chinese influence promote more investments from India and the West.
Ulterior motive of anti Chinese propaganda is to destabilise the state.
In the circumstances we need more pro Chinese writers.

There are two purposes involved. One is anti-China baiting the other is the anti-Rajapaksas campaign.
      They coincide at this moment.
Sadlymany opponents of the Rajapaksas, even those with the most honourable reason, have no plan of action.
In desperation, they resent China standing by Sri Lanka in its time of crisis. But China had even under other governments. China takes a global view of things, and finds it is not in China’s interest to see instability in Asia. There is a foreign policy framework to which they consistently adhere. (Here is the contrast with the West.)
China has credibility among the Sinhalese. The Tamil nationalists are chronic China haters. Many Muslims are persuaded that China is anti-Muslim, but they also know who the new friends of Chinese Muslims are.
Moves have been afoot for some time to drive a wedge between the Sinhalese and China.
There are local print and electronic media that are openly anti-China, more in English (and of course Tamil) than in Sinhala.
What do you expect the Chinese to do?
Buying public opinion is an option. But a blatantly pro-China paper is a liability. Nobody will believe it. They prefer good people-to-people relations, and do not miss a chance.

The only newspaper I can imagine is the Island, as CDN is by default under the government. This report seems either speculation or yet another preemptive move.

Ceylon Today? But it’s illogical to manipulate a newspaper that’s already toeing the line.

“We cannot afford to be anti Chinese, anti Indian or anti West.”

Your realisation of obligation under international relation among countries is too late. You have been blowing your own Sinhala/Buddhist trumpet for a long time, forgetting your extraordinary outrageous claims that your Rana viruses single handedly won the world’s most dangerous, …… TAMIL terrorists LTTE.

“If you want to counter Chinese influence promote more investments from India and the West.”

      Don’t be silly.
You stop electing corrupt politicians to top offices, and you yourself becoming the cheer leaders to these crooks (in other words stop being the official b***s carriers) and then hold them responsible for what they did or didn’t do.

You see your judgement is colored by your keen interest in and participation of racist activities, mentally as well as physically.

I find it difficult to understand how your brain (if you have one) works.

This is the culture Rajapkshes introduced to this country. Mlechcha politics by misleading the vulnerable who are the majority of this country. Regardless of the degrees they obtained, people as whole are far from the facts. Facts have no basis under Rajapakshes.

Ranil is right questioning, if he was the architect of BOND SCAM, why on earth, Rajakashes have filed a case against – so called BOND SCAM theft ?
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGJX1l9abiw

Ranil repeately challenges if there had been a big fraud, publicly made, the govt in power should long have filed a case making him alleged to the biggest fraud.

He questions, why on earth, they keep away from not fullfilling the promises. These were just rhetorics by srilanken media against RM… making him the main architect of the bond scam, but leaving all the real stealers away from the focus.

Well, well the mainstream media newspapers – particularly the Daily Mirror and its Business Time are all into censorship of the truth! So we have a situation of the pot calling the kettle black!
The fact that Covid-19 is a Data Hoax and the PCR numbers game, with data rigged in Sri Lanka and elsewhere has been long known and concealed by the press who rushed to publish the Fake epidemiology models of Covid-19 deaths produced by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington funded by Gate Foundation, to spread panic, close down the country and destroy the Economy so that the US hedge funds can asset strip via Selendiva.
IHME provided Fake Data and Epidemiology model used in Sri Lanka to needlessly LOCKDOWN destroy the Economy and further debt trap the country which the US-Japan Quad War -Karat War games are on-going in the Indian Ocean again causing more Environmental Damage to the Oceans now. Environmental groups are silent about this
Alternative views about the Covid-19 hoax have been completely silenced while we are fed crap like a Lion at the Colombo zoo has Covid-19!

A constant stream of useless, fake news like the Lion peoples’ Sinhale lion in the Zoo catching Covid-19 is fed to the Sri Lankan public while the big story that the US, India, Japan Carat -21 war games in Trincomallee by the US, Japan and India and Ocean’s militarization causes massive environmental damage and killing Dolphins, wheals, turtles and sea creatures and poisioning the fish in the Oceans and those who eat it is being hushed up.

Instead of war games the Hindians and their American buddies who “pumped and dumped” India as the Vaccine and then Covid-19 Virus exporter hub (ha, ha, ha) ,of the world should be cleaning up the MV Pearl ship wreak in the Indian Ocean but are engaged in hybrid war while the media looks the other way.

When one begins to believe that Covid-19 is a data hoax and that medical professionals are subject to fake epidemiology models, it is time to check whether there is a mental disorder and a breakdown in linkage between thought, emotion, and behaviour, which in turn leads to withdrawal from reality and into fantasy and delusion, and a sense of mental fragmentation. Sad.

The main media had to rise up to serve a Govt. of the kind under Rajapakses – nothing
to be alarmed about. They cannot continue without this major adage.
The recent female media workers being harrassed has something to do with this
    development I guess.

Daily newspaper sales in English are less than 300,000 per day. Assuming double the amount read papers, still the averages are low. English media has little or no influence on the overall population. On other hand 16-17 PEOPLE use sinhale and ultimately determine policy. A farmer in uva or a fishermen in ampara is far more important than a guy working in advertising in Col 7.-.politically, culturally and historically.

The ‘guy working in advertising in Col 7’ can create opinion among the most articulate section of the population, especially in times of crisis.
That class cannot, I agree, make governments, but can break at an opportune moment.
