Clarifying The Bond Controversy – Joint Opposition Throwing Dust In Our Eyes

By Shyamon Jayasinghe

From day one of their defeat on January 8th, the seedy camp of the former regime employed an age-old tactic to face the inevitable large scale corruption and criminal charges brought up against them. This is the strategy of throwing dust in the eyes of the potential enemy-in this case the people who have to make their judgment. Confuse the people and give a try at making the latter believe that it is the yahapalanaya government who are really corrupt-not their good selves. Brazen liars these corruption masters have been.

This well-known tactic of dust-throwing is said to be an old Mohameddian trick to ward off an oncoming enemy. I quote from a story that I had read somewhere and saved: “One day the Koreishites surrounded the house of Mahomet, resolved to murder him. They peeped through the crevice of his chamber-door, and saw him lying asleep. Just at this moment his son-in-law Ali opened the door silently and threw into the air a handful of dust. Immediately the conspirators were confounded. They mistook Ali for Mahomet, and Mahomet for Ali; allowed the prophet to walk through their midst uninjured, and laid hands on Ali. No sooner was Mahomet safe, than their eyes were opened, and they saw their mistake.”

The Joint Opposition are doing this pretty well, one must admit. They also keep repeating the dust-throwing at every little opportunity they can muster. In this way, the dust-throwing is coupled with the Goebellian theory of repeating a false position to such an extent that that position will be accepted by the people. The Sri Lankan media, in general, has lost its critical sense and are as prone to be beguiled by deception as the ordinary masses are.arjuna-mahendran

I am not saying that the people and the media do accept that the ten year regime of Mahinda Rajapaksa was a model of moral perfection. They may, mercifully, never accept that stance- given the extent of moral turpitude of the previous regime. However, people can get to the point where they believe that corruption is the norm or way of life of all Sri Lankan politicians-whichever side. “So then, what’s all this fuss?”- the people would think.

The message is gradually being digested by both media and the people are doing the same. Unless the yahapalanaya government counters this diabolical weapon they are in for trouble and our society will also be jeopardised by an appalling new norm. Media personnel will re-live the era where the Gestapo knocks at their doors in the dead of the night and take their personnel away. Yahapalanaya has secured their safety.

The JO campaign has now arrived to the point of throwing dust to make you and I believe that the widely-publicised Mr Clean of Lankan politics, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, is also deeply corrupt? May not have yet arrived at the point but the JO are certainly heading in that direction and taking the battle right onto this man. It is clear that the Treasury bond issue has been so overwhelmingly politicised with this agenda alone in mind. Get rid of Ranil Wickremesinghe and the rest of the yahapalanaya establishment will collapse like nine pins. it is logical that JO demands that Mr Wickremesinghe must “temporarily” resign. What a generosity in using the adverb ‘temporarily!’ JO knows that such a temporary resignation would end up in permanence.

That’s exactly what they want. Isolating President Sirisena thereafter and capturing his support, JO believes, is a matter of short time. For that’s how Sri Lankan politics has travelled over the last decade or two. Political support has become something negotiable and not demanding principle.

Readers have to bear in mind this fundamental political agenda that is working underneath in the controversy surrounding the so-called ‘bond scam’ In fact, everyone referred to this phenomenon as a “scam” long before COPE declared it as such. This shows the JO trick is working.

The dust-throwing strategy is also another form of attack in order to defend. Just take a look at the holies who are in the front of this campaign of deceit and how they put up a brave face. You will then see what really they are up to. What a saint is Gammanpilla? Wimal Weerawansa? Keheliya? Bandula Gunawardane? Aluthgamage? Indeed they all need to be canonised as national saints. Those others behind them have also bought millions worth of property and are now avoiding ownership claims before court.

The entire lot of these blokes do all this self-righteous moral screaming knowing well that during their ten years of rule billions worth of Treasury Bonds had been sold only by private placement-inviting their cronies only to bid. The laughable irony is that Mahendran’s son-in law’s company had been one of the beneficiaries of private placement under that regime. One good change done by their devil, Arjuna Mahendran, was to replace the vicious private placement by public auction.

It behoves reasonable persons to consider the following pertinent facts about the JO accusations:

First, the COPE is essentially a political body and it became in this instance the primary battlefield for those opposing the yahapalanaya government to try and tear the government and the PM apart. COPE is functional for issues that are not acutely politicised- say, an issue about frauds and losses in a corporation caused primarily by its officials. On the other hand, such a body is not the right one to judge an issue embroiled in a national political crisis. As President Sirisena said the other day, a judicial body should examine this without the involvement of politicians. That position is unassailable.

Second, whether Mahendran and his son-in-law was guilty of fraud is something that must be judicially determined following judicial procedure. Only a court is both legally and substantially competent to do that. The COPE, on the other hand is not a judicial body. Its report must necessarily go to the AG who may then indict the accused in court. Thus the question of guilt is still undecided.

Third, the COPE report does not place any blame on the Prime Minister. On the other hand, its Chairman, Mr Handunneththi, had clearly stated “that if they had conducted the auction as the Prime Minister had instructed, this problem would not have arisen.” The PM is totally out of the picture. Hence, the JO demand for the latter’s “temporary resignation,’ is sheer cheap politics. Mr Wickremesinghe gave the desired cold shoulder and even stated he is willing any moment to go before the Bribery Commissioner.

Fourth, the Central Bank Governor, once appointed is out of control of the Prime Minister’s office. The law guarantees his independence from any political control. This is the same practice in all developed countries. Hence, the Prime Minister cannot be called in question for any misdoings of the Central Bank. The Governor is a free agent.

The only aspersion that can technically be cast on Mr Ranil Wickremesinghe is over his choice of Mr Mahendran as Governor. However, even given that Mahendran is guilty, the Prime minister could not be expected to foresee these happenings. There isn’t any denying that Mr Mahendran’s credentials for the position were sound.

A columnist in a national weekend newspaper on 5/11 rightly stated that the fact that the Attorney general stood his ground over his report to the COPE showed one great thing namely, that yahapalanaya is on. Under the previous regime the AG, like all other bodies meant to be independent of political control, was under the President. A firm AG would have had to live under threat of either dismissal or of life.

The columnist further adds: “Though there was considerable disquiet that the COPE report would be tampered with and the UNP would do its worst to ensure a cover up, the contents of the report and its general acceptance by all sides of the political divide as a fair and accurate finding, amply demonstrate that the flame of Yahapalanaya, though subject to many an ill wind, has weathered the storm, and still burns bright to take Lanka from darkness to light.”

RE: Clarifying The Bond Controversy – Joint Opposition Throwing Dust In Our Eyes

    Thanks.

    1. “From day one of their defeat on January 8th, the seedy camp of the former regime employed an age-old tactic to face the inevitable large scale corruption and criminal charges brought up against them. This is the strategy of throwing dust in the eyes of the potential enemy-in this case the people who have to make their judgment. “The Joint Opposition are doing this pretty well, one must admit. They also keep repeating the dust-throwing at every little opportunity they can muster. “

Yes, indeed! However, that task was made easier by the Yahapalanaya indecision and incompetence. The low IQ of the media and the masses also helps the JO.

    2. “However, people can get to the point where they believe that corruption is the norm or way of life of all Sri Lankan politicians-whichever side. “So then, what’s all this fuss?”- the people would think.”

Well, the Yahapalanaya was supposed to break this trend. This was made worse by the COPE controversy and the Turncoat, Traitor, “President” Gon Sirisena attacking the independent commissions and the judiciary on behalf of the crooks, cronies and killers from the Rajapaksa Mafia, and possible acceptance of payoffs.

    3. “Readers have to bear in mind this fundamental political agenda that is working underneath in the controversy surrounding the so-called ‘bond scam’ In fact, everyone referred to this phenomenon as a “scam” long before COPE declared it as such. This shows the JO trick is working.”

Yahapalanaya gave an opening for the JO, instead of keep attacking and exposing the crooks and killers.

    4. “The entire lot of these blokes do all this self-righteous moral screaming knowing well that during their ten years of rule billions worth of Treasury Bonds had been sold only by private placement-inviting their cronies only to bid. The laughable irony is that Mahendran’s son-in law’s company had been one of the beneficiaries of private placement under that regime. One good change done by their devil, Arjuna Mahendran, was to replace the vicious private placement by public auction.”

    Expose. Expose and Expose.

Yahapalanays needs to expose the former crooks much better than they are doing now.

It’s a wee bit rich for Rajapakses and their sidekicks to point the finger at anyone for corruption!

There was a culture set-up and primed by Cabral for unprecedented corruption in the Central Bank. Even, one of the primary-dealerships was owned by Cabral’s sister. If I am not mistaken Cabral and Aloysius are from the same clan; whichever government is in power they have the connections and the savvy to make money. There is nothing wrong in making money as long as it’s not stealing; especially the poor workingman’s EPF.

Ranil is a bloody idiot. All he is interested in, is wearing a suit and tie and hanging on to Sirisena and lasting till 2020. He should have handled the JO onslaught head-on and more forcefully; not in his usual sissy devious/slimy way.

Ranil has a duty by the country and the people to make sure that the Rajapakses and their band of thieves never come back in to power.

Sure, the country has a lot of problems but any of the Rajapakses is not the solution. It’s time for some other new untainted ones from the younger generation. Who? Only God knows!

This piece clearly illustrates who is trying to throw dust at our eyes. Shyamon cannot defend the indefensible. You don’t need to be a highly educated economist or a highly skilled analyst to know that a well planned highly corrupt deal costing the entire nation dearly has occurred at Central Bank under the patronage of Ranil Wickremasinghe.

It was not the JO but cabinet ministers who confirmed Ranil’s personal responsibility in appointing Arjun Mahendra to the CB violating all norms.

Arjun was a foreigner and did not make the oath required by such a high official. His conflict of interest with Perpetual Treasuries is there for all to see. You don’t need JO to point it out. The manner in which PT made such a huge profit is again in plain sight. Again it was not JO but President himself acknowledged wrong doing at the CB and publicly stated his advise to Ranil to sack the Governor before the last General Election.

You don’t need to know the details, Ranil’s behaviour in trying to save Arjun and cover up the fraud itself is good enough evidence of Mr Clean’s credentials. If Ranil was so clean why did he block the interim COPE report being tabled in the parliament before the election?

This is nothing to do with JO. Therefore Shyamon should not try to confuse readers and try to throw dust at their eyes. If Ranil doesn’t resign. He should be sacked. That is the most prudent way of demonstrably saving Yahapalanaya. Shyamon may be a touch too late……

COPE has 10 UNP and none from JO.

Mr Handunnetta is a member of the party which the UNP bought for LKR 25 Lakhs.

What is this yahapalana Uncle on about?

Doesn’t he believe the PAYE Tax paying Yahapalana suckers have to fork out LKR 600 Million plus 14 percent something per annum , every year and each year for the next 29 years?.

Didn’t the Yahapalana Uncle hear about the LKR 5 Billion which FIL & SIL syndicate pumped in to the PT Coffers in just 12 months?.

May be Yahapalana Uncle doesn’t have any Bonds in his Pension Fund..

Neither he come under PAYE Tax bracket..

Dont be an old Dada. Your hatred of the Rajapakses should not blind you to the obvious failings of his opponents.

Under Ranil the UNP has become a secondary party now dependent on Sirisena to hang in office. How many UNP people have left in disgust over Ranil’s leadership in last 25 years ? Yes he has been UNP leader for 25 years now .

Is that not corruption ? So many failures yet retains the leadership of this old royalist group called the UNP !Would that have happened in Australia where you prefer to live ?

Come and see the state of Colombo now to understand Ranil’s leadership. It is an utter mess.

As to the Governor issue-in the first place a good government would appoint an independent person to that office-not a lackey ( yes cabrall too was a lackey) Then do you think such a lackey like Mahendran would to something so momentous like the 20 Billion bond scam without the participation of his Mentor Ranil ?

How did Perpetual get such a large loan to buy bonds from Bank of Ceylon in a few hours-without Ranils OK?

How did perpetual get a loan from the central Bank to buy their own bonds ?

What was Malik Samarwickrema doing at the Central Bank on the day the bids were made ?

Why did Ranil so desperately try to suppress the investigation and also to reappoint Mahendran ?

You live in a clean country. We live in a country of dirt, crooks and fraudsters.

Dont forget the Attorney General is a public servant who yet has a career in front of him. He may want to be the next CJ or may be a diplomatic appointment. What happens in the AGs department is not transparent

It would have been better to appoint a Presidential Commission to hold a public inquiry into this ( not three UNP lawyers which shows the true nature of Ranil)

Ranil is a failure in every way but the country and the UNP are too weak to get rid of him-same way we had to fight so hard to get rid of MR. Bad guys have a lot of power in Sri Lanka unlike your country- Australia. That is why Sri Lanka is what it is.

What UNP has is the replica of Rajapakse model!
      Worse than that!

One man show Ranil lead acting the tragicomedy of Sri Lanka!
Listen to his jokes in the parliament!
his economic wisdom! intelligence in subject matters! articulation!
all in one package! very versatile actor. How can country go wrong with him and Don Sirisena! The hero of the bra!

Their talents will destroy what Mahinda could not within 15 years!

It is just a matter of time!

The time is right for open minded people with the help of Business community to create a new government/party to destroy the corrupt losers in the both side!

Yes, I have many choices, Stability, Currently we have a strong stable government leading the country with some strong economic objectives, Whether they are right or wrong can be seen in the future, Some of them are already evident from the Hambantota harbor, I remember all those people who criticized this project unfairly, Currently it is providing lot of revenue to the country! Most of the articles that criticize this government lacks objectivity, If we look at the indicators of economy, Everything point towards improvements. I am not referring to Central Bank, I am referring to IMF, ADB and International rating agencies etc, The new government promises us Sun and Moon, This is how Chandrika came to power in 90, I was arguing with my University colleagues then that nothing will change exactly like this. West does not have the will power or the capacity to invest in SL, They are struggling with their economies, In fact there is no restrictions if they want to do projects in SL even now. Implementation of law and order works for common people like you and me, It does not work for MR’s Henchmen, I know this is wrong and should change, But Improving publice transport, Health sector is more important to me that human rights and law and order, People who murder perpetrators with out a fair trial, We will see the natural justice prevail, So far only few escaped the natural justice for wrong doing, I do not rely on political parties for anything, I do not associate politicians, I rely on Mahinda’s leadership at this point of time than this canda haliya leadership, After all, thieves are jumping to Matithree’s side, So all the good reason to keep this government. Also the Security is also a vital issue, TNA and LTTE proxies have still not come down from Federal idea! Where is the compromise? If the forces are not in North, Sinhalese will not even be able to visit these areas, Forget about living. Hat mongers are still working at large, Do you hear any Tamil leader call for reconcile apart from Devananda? There was favoritism under UNP govts too, You may be naive to believe suddenly things will change for good after 8th Jan, Not me. With this govt as long as you do not interfere with politics, No businessman have been victimized! Look at the people in this Kanda Haliya Maithree: What are his achievement as ministers in may PA govt? Have you seen the lame excuses he was giving for the pharmaceutical bill, He should have resigned them if he had integrity! Hrunika, Mahinda’s adapted daughter! Rajitha: Only talk no achievements! Do you expect me to vote for people/ hand over country who said forces were going to Pamankada, when they were attacking Alimankada? Sarath Fonseka: Another Despot trying to be the Next mahinda! Arjuna: Brutally attacked Asoka Kanishta Students. Now Mervin also? Chandrika: Worst leadership ever to produce in SL. Mangala: Dining with Mahinda! Give me a break! I think people will deliver the correct message, May be you have forgotten what Mahinda achieved defeating LTTE, Not me, I am still grateful that no one dies on bus bombs or land mines. Yes we need democracy , Rule of law, But go and talk to ordinary people if they give a 10 cents to these? Sri Lankans cheer when suspect get killed during police custody, They witnessed 60,000 youths get killed with Parala Ana and Tyres! They got lot to learn about democracy, Our people vote for rice packet! Mahinda can be undemocratic despot, Yet like Premadasa, He has a feeling towards the ordinary people! These were the same criticism brought against Premadasa, Remember how Chandrika criticised the garment factories? 17 year UNP curse? all the Bogas are in the same Kanda haliya now

    Dear Mr. Jayasinghe,
Let me clarify some of the points you have got wrong here, but on the whole I agree with most of the comments.

    1. There were never private placements given to cronies or otherwise. So called’ private placements’ means that the same Primary Dealers will be asked to take more than they bid for. But the important point is that additional amounts will be given at weighted average price. Occasionally EPF and ETF also will be given.

    2. There is no doubt as to whether Mahendran and Aloysius played out. How do you explain Rs. 11 billion profit otherwise. Just in a couple of months. A company that has Rs. 300 million capital.

    3. PM’s folly was in trying to defend a rouge. Appointing a foreigner without checking background to this all important post is playing with public money and a callous disregard for the people who voted for him.

    4. If you want to know who Arjuna Aloysius is , just Google his name, you will see the details. His grand father, Katar Aloysius was also a rouge who played out together with Paskaralingam. Ask any senior officer of Bank of Ceylon who worked in the 80 s in the Treasury how they played out on Romanian Railway coaches.

Having said all that, yes, previous regime was much worst. There are some good developments under the present regime, no doubt about it. Freedom to express and shout about our views is one of them. But this alone cannot get us to the promised land.

Prime Minister will be well advised to get rid of his old cronies like Paski,Arjuna and some other hangers on, specially Old Royalists who have passed use by date and get some smart young professionals. Unfortunately these cronies wont allow that, therefore I think he is also well on the way to the political dust bin, sadly !!

Sirimanne, thanks for using those words, “callous disregard for the people who voted for him”. That is what it is.

My problem is that I had so much faith in this guy and he has let us all down so badly. How could I be such a bad judge of character? And he is still going on and on doing the same thing – Supporting a rogue. There is only one way to explain it. The man is being blackmailed by AM and/or whoever is behind AM.

How else can one explain Ranil’s ability to withstand all the flak like a buffalo withstanding rain?

        EDWIN RODRIGO

“And he is still going on and on doing the same thing – Supporting a rogue. There is only one way to explain it. The man is being blackmailed by AM and/or whoever is behind AM.”

Or is it that Ranil is a Dimwit, Nitwit, Idiot, and Simpleton, not to have seen that?

At least in the case of the Turncoat, Traitor Gon(Gona) Sirisena, there is credible evidence that he was bribed by the Rajapaksas and theit cronies with theit stolen billions from the people.

        • 2
          0

Amarasiri, you say, “Or is it that Ranil is a Dimwit, Nitwit, Idiot, and Simpleton, not to have seen that”?

I don’t think so. Look at the modus operandi. He takes charge of the Finance Ministry and brings in a rogue from nowhere to look after the Central Bank. Before one could say ‘menna horek’ billions are stolen by the rogue. Ranil defends the rogue and even keeps him as an adviser. Then when he is cornered and has no escape route, he says, “Hey, people this is Yahapalanaya!”

The reason why Ranil is silent about this case now may be because he is following the advice of Mark Twain who said, “It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are covering up for a ‘rogue’ than to open it and remove all doubt”. (Actually Mark Twain said ‘fool’ and I changed it to ‘….rogue’ to fit the hero in this story).

We used to call him “Mr. Clean.” And the man certainly has lived up to that. He got the Central Bank Cleaned Up.

We also said that he is fair. Yes he is fair even to bandits. How fair would he be to the innocents?

A good lawyer says ‘innocent until proven guilty’. Ranil goes a step further and says ‘not guilty because he is clean’.

This is like a top class mystery movie where you do not know who the hero is and who the villain is. To make it more thrilling, you do not who the villain is and who the Halp karaya is until the very end.

Nice try man. But we are not falling for that. You must be thinking that we Baiyas are all rice eating cattle or grass eating humans. Shame On You Shaymon Jayasinghe for trying to do exactly what you claim JO is trying to do. What school did you go to? I am going to bet on Royal.

You have highlighted “Get rid of Ranil Wickremesinghe and the rest of the yahapalanaya establishment will collapse like nine pins” as the strategy of JO. And what is your strategy? To throw the same thing from a different direction and put fear in to those who still oppose MR.

I for one do not believe that personalities matter so much that they become indispensible, especially political leaders. Of course it is a line that all political leaders love because it provides them with a nice excuse for staying in power by hook or crook. History provides many examples of the opposite. Anwar Sadat when Hosni Mubarak was assassinated, Sirimavo on the assassination of SWRD and so on, where the time and necessity produced the right man or woman.

To say such a thing is to insult the other members of the UNP. Is RW the only one who can bear the mantle of PM? Come on Shaymon, if being a Royalist is a requirement (which is absurd in my eyes) there are so many of them in the UNP. In any case to depend on a man so much is highly risky. What if the hypothetical leader of some hypothetical country were to pass away (God forbid!)? But it is possible, is it not. If you are Buddhist you will know that all conditioned things are subject to uncertainty. Are the hypothetical people of that hypothetical country allowing their country to collapse and go in to chaos?

Have you never heard of a Plan B? I am sure you have but you do not want to even think of it for obvious reasons. Even North Korea has one. So you should also start thinking of one.

Well, the Yahapalanaya is ON. That is a good thing. Not just it should be ON, it should be seen as being ON.

Where Mr Jayasinghe’s loyalties lie is well known to Sri Lankans. He is still paying back the UNP for the favouritism he received from the dreaded, mad, bad Premadasa regime. He is trying to do this by creating the myth of a “moral turpitude” and “Gestapo assisted” Rajapakse regime.

But if he comes to Colombo he will see that the ordinary people, and not the media he is blaming, have realised the truth about the Yahapalanaya fraud.

How can he blame Rajapakse for the biggest fraud of Mahendran ,carried out as per the instructions of Ranil Wickremesinghe?

Some people have no shame. That is the problem of Sri Lanka.

Well said. facts are stubborn. As for me there is no jt. opposition. For it to become jt. opposition they must rope in the TNA and the JVP. Facts will come to light who robbed whom when all Bond issues during the past 10 years are probed.

Opposition shouts a lot. They gave this govt 3 months then 6 months then till April next year and now they are counting when the next general election should be held. The silent majority will decide.

Sri Lankans have fallen for outfits like Golden Key, F&G , and CIFL offering up to 30% interest rates, AND they want compensation for being suckered. Can such people understand exactly how much was lost(or not) in a 30 year bond issue? I think not, and neither does the J.O or most of the Government. If they did understand such high finance, they wouldn’t be politicians.
If we really want to know what happened, we need a panel of FOREIGN experts to go into the matter.
Let’s stop depending on the expertise of two-bit politicians and three-wheeler drivers.

You don’t need to have a foreign expert to figure out what happen in the Bond Scam and dumb nitwit could figure it out if you take a look at the analysis done by independent reputed personnel! and also take a look at Perpetual Treasuries Financial Statement https://www.colombotelegraph.com/index.php/infamous-perpetual-treasuries-makes-over-5-billion-profit-after-bond-scam/

        Look at it this way:
1.The govt. needed money (to keep extravagant election promises)
        2. It borrows the money from Perpetual Treasuries at x interest.
        3. PT sells the debt to third parties
        4. PT makes 5 billion profit.
        5. The EPF too gets a higher rate for its investment.

Being simple-minded, I can see that some people, EPF included, are up on the deal, but who has LOST money? The Govt? In that case, where can one borrow money without interest?
Perhaps the grouse is that the profits only went to PT? Well, if there were 10 more bidders, they would collectively have made 5 billion would they not?

What we see in Maithiri today is nothing new, this is what we have been seeing in SL leaders at their best. The past ones showed their best to capture the power while in opposition or to prolong it in power.

What is amazing about Maithiri is, he came to power with UNP votes assuring all sorts of promises that he will restore the good governance, put up a face like he was sympathetic to minorities, formed a unit government and now live up to the same old set standards.

Now he starts talking about forces, for him all those who wore uniform are heroes. Same old thing, worshiping either clergies or forces to further their political longevity.

What is more annoying to the voter in MS is forgetting him being the Executive President he himself uttering something publicly like Thajudeen case is suppressed. Maybe trying to put Ranil on spot light. And, an attempt to make us believe that he is still want to go after MR, but because of Ranil, he was hand strung.

If MR had put some real money on Maithiri that is what we see now starts working by way of his mood change, it is definitely a good investment. This is how it should happen, first break the unity Seems like the beginning of the end to unity Government.

Whether Mahendran did it in his own or on the order of PM, there should be a thorough investigation, but will it happened. In the same token that Ranil does now for MR, even MR comes to power he would return favors. Knowing MR, will he, I doubt. In the bond saga, looks like all were winners, except the poor people who believe their hard earned money is being preserved and kept in the safe hands of the government for their future, but unfortunately it is being swindled. The very people who should look after the interest of the members seems to be doing a favours buying bond in the secondary market. The simple fact in these type of games is if some one made profit, obviously someone must have lost. Unfortunately, someone lost here is EPF members.

Does Ranil think that he and his cronies can do all corruption and cover up by shouting yahapalanaya with the help of the attorney general’s dept? No one gave Ranil and his cronies in the Govt: the freedom to rob public money Sirisena advised Ranil not to damage his Mr: clean face last year and sack AM. Now Ranil will have to face the music and president must act decisively.

What seems to be more sinister is not the Central Bank Bond but the all powerful Bond between James Ranil Bond and the Robin Arjuna Hood. (Edwin Rodrigo)

1- I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. (Thomas Jefferson).

2- I never considered a difference of opinion in politics, in religion, in philosophy, as cause for withdrawing from a friend. (Thomas Jefferson).”.

Unfortunately, our James Bond seems to be doing exactly that while ignoring (1).

Sirimanne does not understand. The primary dealers were often cronies or the proxies of cronies. That is how Rajapakses operate.See how Basil and Yoshitha used proxies to buy land worth millions. The important thing is that Aloysius was also a dealer during MR’s time.He was a good man then but a bad man now

“Use your pen and stab it in your arse!”

Will it make Shyamon Jayasinghe feel good about it, I mean sexually of course?

If he doesn’t possess a pen what should he do? Please advise him from your own experience.

I believe he uses his keyboard and computer to write his articles.

The bond issue is important. More than bond issue Rajapakse issue (Joint opposition) is much more important. The Joint opposition lead by Rajapakse is moving towards bringing back their regime to power through a bloodbath in this island. If you make a mistake on this, the nation will never survive.

GL Peiris demanding the PM to resign is clownish. The writer has clearly clarified this whole issue in no uncertain terms. GL is an utter failure

This time Mr. Shyamon Jayasinghe is getting bellyful of ‘it’ from CT readers. This is what happens when you try to defend robbers, cheaters, looters, and liars.
The entire world is aware of the current Central Bank Bond scam: in short it is a daytime robbery that was premeditated, ill (not well)-planned, executed, and the perpetrators acted like a bunch of bullying kids; the robbers, the money, and the accomplices have been successfully cornered, questioned and identified. The size of the theft/loot has been reported by various credible reports (COPE, Auditor General Report), local and international media and now it is called ‘The Great Bank Robbery’ (as opposed to the famous movie ‘The Great Train Robbery’).
The most hilarious part of this scam is that the Government that calls itself ‘Yahapalanaya or Good Governance’ has failed to take action; the authorities seems to defend it, belittle it, ignore it or delay it. Especially Prez My3 is dragging his foot and a bunch of UNPers like Mr. Shyamon Jayasinghe worked 24/7 to defend the robbers and accomplices. Isn’t this a joke or what? One of the popular media channels asked: “Do you know there is a new Club now and it is called the ‘Foot-note club’?
It has been calculated by reliable financial analysts, senior economists, and prominent bankers, that the long term effect of this scam is ‘unfathomable’ and ‘incalculable’. The debt share of each and every citizen of Sri Lanka has risen overnight to Rs 20,000.00 per head and it is considered ‘incremental’!
MP Vasudeva Nanayakkara blames openly that Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe is the prime suspect and he challenges Prime Minister to take legal action against him if he is wrong. Nanayakkara also emphatically notes that PM Wickremasinghe will not take action because if he does ‘everything’ will be revealed in the courts. Instead, PM sent the COPE report to AG so that AG can delay it indefinitely until another scam comes to the fore to cover it up! People of Sri Lanka and media are aware of that too. Now the moderate UNPers like some of my family members and friends ask: “Is this the same Mr. Ranil Wickremasinghe that UNPers used to identifying as Mr. Clean!
Mr.Shyamon Jayasinghe! This is actually a severe problem with Ranil-worshiping UNPers like you; they fail to call a spade a spade. And the party is already gone down the Rabbit hole!
I supported the UNP when Lalith Athulathmudali was the MP for Ratmalana. He was a great guy! At that time current finance minister Ravi K was Athulathmudali’s ‘unofficial’ accounts clerk. He had a walkie-talkie type huge mobile-phone and Ravi pretended he was getting ‘important’ calls every few minutes at meetings and flashed it out to the attendees! This was funny and he became a laughing stock among Athulathmudali’s top party supporters. After Athulathmudali’s sudden death Srimani Athulathmudali got the sympathy vote and Ravi K was Srimani’s ‘close confidante’. He called her ‘aunty’. I asked some of my colleagues later but nobody knows what happened to Lalith A’s huge wealth, after his demise, and that could be millions of rupees. A few years later, Srimanie sacked Ravi K from the DUNF too. Then Ravi K got friendly with Ranil W and joined the UNP.
Meanwhile Gamini Dissanayake had already abandoned the DUNF, the party Athulathmudali co-founded with him. Gamini D was too ambitious and rejoined the UNP with the sole intention of being the executive president but it all evaporated with a single LTTE suicide bomb that blasted during the presidential election in 1994. When there was none to challenge, Ranil W became the ‘leader’ and the leadership vacuum in the UNP was compared by ordinary people to ‘Lula nathi valata kanaya pandithaya’ (loosely translated as ‘when there is no eel (Lula) in the mud-pond a mudfish (Kanaya) would be the leader’). This is how the UNP started going down the drain for almost 2 decades under Ranil’s leadership. Finally Ranil W managed to come to power in 2015 through a ‘coup’ masterminded by the West, India’s RAW and anti-Rajapaksa elements of the country like the current prez and his blind supporters of the current cabinet.
Now, the commonly accepted opinion of many political and apolitical analysts is that Ranil W covers My3’s secrets and vice versa. (At this point My3’s son Daham and his recent Pub attack that was swept under carpet comes to our mind). However, both Yahapalana leaders have failed to acknowledge that their secrets or secret ‘deals’ are no longer secrets to the public! What the public say is: ‘there were a lot of thefts, frauds, and mismanagement under the Rajapaksas too but they did a lot of good work for the country, nation, and the people; among them the most important is obviously the decisive defeat of the LTTE and ‘finish off’ its terror campaign. The country was like a bee-hive afterwards; highways and byways were being built; skyscrapers were changing country’s landscape; Colombo became a clean city; northern and eastern kids got a chance to go to school as their counterparts in the rest of the country, and 97% of the able people were employed! Many now believe that the West and India hated this development! They were simply jealous and a certain Western adviser to his country’s Prime Minister was reported to have said that he felt envy when he saw Colombo’s beauty and development’! Therefore, they made use of Ranil W and My3 to topple the Rajapaksas and used a bogus promise to destroy the country under a fake banner ‘Yahapalanaya or Good Governance’!
I’m sorry to say this to CT readers but according to the general public in Sri Lanka, these Yahapalana ‘rogues’ (their own word) just lie, loot, cheat and rob; that’s all they do, that’s all they know, and that’s all they have learnt to do. Now under both Ranil W and My3 both parties (UNP & SLFP) are gone down the Rabbit Hole and traditional UNPers and traditional SLFPers are no longer with them because they don’t want to be ‘partners in crime’. I don’t have to say much about the floating voters! Unfortunately some UNPers like Mr. Shyamon Jayasinghe are not ashamed to defend the criminals and partners of crime!

RR is salivating for Rajapaksa after all the large scale theft, murder and waste. His dependence on the statements of foul-mouthed and lunatic Vasu shows what a sorry character RR is. The writer has clearly shown how Ranil cannot be held to account but RR cannot understand that reasoning. He prefers relying on Vasu. The best part is that even the COPE report does not blame Ranil. The writer has also rightly pointed out that Mahendran can be held guilty onlafter a judicial enquiry that is yet to be held but RR sucks to Vasu.

Srinath talks nonsense. I have clearly explained with evidence that COPE cannot find anybody guilty or not guilty. It is not a body set up for that. COPE can submit an investigation report with its findings. That’s all.
On the other hand,it is only a court that can find an accused guilty or otherwise. That is the law all over the world-except when Srinath’s champion, MR, was President. Courts follow a judicial procedure that COPE cannot do and only a strict judicial procedure by a politically independent body like the court can finalise the questions that Srinath raises.
Second, the fact that Perpetual Trustees made a huge profit is immaterial to the point at issue. This company made profits even during the previous regime. It was engaged in buying govt bonds under MR’s private placement procedure. All companies work for profit.
I hope Srinath keeps shut now

Shyamon, issue is not whether COPE can make a judicial judgement or not. The issue is whether from citizens’ point of view there is believable facts and evidence of a massive corruption and a cover up taken place involving the prime minister. The answer is overwhelming YES. You have been using much more flimsy grounds to accuse MR and you very well know none of that have been proven in a court of law if that is the yardstick you want to use. Don’t bury yourself in the mud more than what you have already got into.

I am sorry Mr. Shaymon, though I feel that you probably do not mean me (hardly ever do I find any one reading the drivel I write), but I have been nasty. I know how you feel. As a true patriot you try to say something to defend the Prime Minister of your country and every Tom, Dick and Harry starts making nasty comments as if they know everything. Isaac Asimov had the same problem and once said, “People who think they know everything are a great annoyance to those of us who do”. That is probably how you must be feeling right now.

As I said in a previous comment, these people are grousing about a measly Rs 225 taken from them, completely ignoring the thousands and thousands rupees (per capita) that went to MR and company. It is indeed a laughable irony.

It reminds me of a young man servant of a village headman (Ralahamy) that I know. The guy was caught in the act with the young servant girl by the Ralahamy. The Ralahamy after carefully separating them, starts beating him with a madu walige of MS vintage, saying “how can you do that to that poor girl?”. The guy shouts out “what is so special about this girl? I have been doing the same thing to your podi menike (daughter) for so long”. The Ralahamy says, “What? You did that to my daughter?” The guy answered ‘Yes, not only to the Podi Menike but to the Loku Menike too”.

I am sure that most of those nasty comments are born out of jealousy. They argue like this: A small company like Perpetual Tea making billions and billions of rupees! Oh my God! Never in the history of the country have so much been robbed from so many by so few, they think. Then they expand their nasty thoughts further, “what can anyone do with so much money? They must be living like royalty in perpetual happiness!”

Little do they know that most of this money is going to International Tamil something to be used against our country. The International Tamil something then makes donations to organizations such as the Clinton foundation, which in turn give their services to destabilize our country. It is ‘Play for Pay’. Perpetual Tea is quite fair. While donating money to those organizations they also give ‘something’ to the local accomplices. Once donations and ‘somethings’ are paid, the two Arjunas are left with a booty that is looks quite substantial compared to Rs 255, but really is nothing much, perhaps not more than Rs 10 million a month per each Arjuna. It is measly compared to what a Columbian drug lord would earn.

Finally, I like to quote Mark Twain to these nasty commentators. “Get your facts first, then you can distort them as you please”.
