Comparable Times, Contrasting Figures: India And China

One cannot easily say how best to describe India and China. Two countries, nations both ancient and great, civilizations that have led the world or powers to dazzle the future and illumine the path to humanity. Their mission to the peoples of the world is certainly unmistakable.

However great the idealistic side is as a fount of the future, the material base has to be in place. The struggle in the last century was to capture the opportunity. The titanic effort to secure it engages much of the energies of the two nations now. Through sheer size and weight they are going to rank first and second in the world by 2050. But how close are they going to be? Unlikely to be anywhere near is what performance of the recent past suggests for an assessment of the future.

By what criteria one may ask. Through incontrovertible figures is what the writer would urge. To set a discussion moving, some helpful data are provided.

China and India are said to become No. 1 & 2 Powers or Economies in the world. By what criteria and how close to one another is not clearly known. The writer refrains from expressing an opinion. The readership may comment. If emotions are eschewed and rational approaches are chosen, we may get into some clear terrain.

There is already a big cap between China and India and the chances are that this gap will widen rather than narrow. Furthermore I feel that it is an understatement to say that only 30 percent of the Indian population is living below the poverty line. The real figure will be much higher. The same applies for literacy rate.

China is way ahead of India and will be for the forseable future.

China has its problems but it doesn’t have the monumental problem of caste and the damage it has done and continues to do. Indian elite see themselves as very different to the downtrodden, while in China the leadership and the vast majority of the common man are still considered Han Chinese, so China simply does not have the racial/castist issue of India. This is why India will always be f$%ked up.

The comparison here is between largely a Buddhist vs largely Hindu systems.

The Hindu system with caste and gender inequalities performs like a bullock cart.

Absolutely relevant.I wanted to conclude by saying that the figures owe their difference to goodness in governance and to honesty in public life. At one place it has touched the very nadir. As for structures let us await the change of guard and a process of restructuring. At the more successful place, many or all are in place but a lot of study is needed.

One significant factor which delayed the growth for the India was its delay in economic reforms. India was largely a protectionist economy through its socialist prism until PV Narashima Rao government decided to open the economy to global market in 1991. Comparing the growth since 1991 between china and India, it is very clear that India did its best albeit very less growth In Industrial sector. That said, china too has its own problem especially its growing public debt to the tune of $3 trillion.

    In China , Republic of China came into existence Yan Fu, signing petition in 1916 demand to create Confucianism as state religion, That Petition demand and text says;
“Western culture after this European WAR, has been corrupted utterly. Formerly when I heard our scholars of the old school say that there would come a day when the teaching of Confucius would be practice by all mankind, I thought they were talking nonsense. But now I find that some of the most enlightened men in Europe and American seems to be coming gradually to a like opinion .. It seems to me that in three centuries of progress the people of West have achieved four principles; to be selfish, to kill other, to have little integrity and to feel little shame. How different are the principles of Confucius and Mencius, as broad and deep as Heaven and Earth designed to benefit all men everywhere”
This is guiding principle of Chinese civilization over 4000 -5000 years.
In 1949 speaking by Mao Zedon was realized that ,
” Western bourgeois Civilization, bourgeois Democracy and the plan for bourgeois Republic have all gone bankrupt in the EYES of the Chinese people.” He asset A Modern People Republic China 1949 ,that would abolished classes and World enter New Era of GREAT HARMONY.
This is path now follow by Fourth Generation of Chinese leaders are moving to revitalized New World Civilization.

    S. Sivathasan,

    Thank you, good comparison.

The caste system, the core Hindu beliefs, that are against Egalitarianism, all work against India, and its literacy rate and output.
