David Cameron’s Reverie During The Long Flight Back Home

By Malinda Seneviratne –

Meanwhile in a parallel universe called ‘humility’

I came, no one can say I did not. I saw.  I mean, I saw some stuff, didn’t see a lot of stuff and pretended not to see some of what I did see.  I pretended to be conqueror.  I can’t say I talked tough or talked down, honestly, because I was at the receiving end of a lot of ‘tough’ and was left looking up a lot of times.

I spoke about media freedom but didn’t talk about the Leveson Inquiry which all of Britain knows is a judicial public probe into the culture, practices and ethics of our press following the News International phone-hacking scandal.  When I tough-talked with my friend Mahinda, that tough-talk was tossed at me.  I had to opt for thumb-twiddling.

I spoke about human rights and I was asked about the Chilcot Report and about Bloody Sunday, the former about an illegal invasion 10 years ago and the latter about crimes against humanity perpetrated 40 years ago. The Chicot Report, if you really want to know, is being edited to clear our friends (should I say ‘our masters’?) across the Atlantic of any guilt.  I got a lesson in arithmetic, since the LLRC Report came out just a couple of years after May 2009.  The LLRC Report was not ‘edited’.  So when I gave a March 2014 deadline and had to say ‘please give me six months to get the sanitized version of the Chilcot Repoirt out, I was made to look like a first grader who was finding it tough to add one to one and get ‘two’.   More thumb-twiddling.

There was other stuff that I had to listen to. It was altogether uncomfortable and disconcerting. But then again, I had a script in hand and I played my part. I had to say certain things to Mahinda so that I could come out and tell my journo-buddies (who alone were allowed to shoot questions at me, ‘freebies’ or ‘full-tosses’ I think they are called) ‘I said this and that’ in my ‘free-and-frank’ monologue.  No one asked what was said to me, because I didn’t allow intelligent journalists who subscribed to media ethics to query me.

The flight home was long.  I had time to think.  I know for a fact that we allow, in the name of ‘freedom of expression’, LTTE operatives to demonstrate in London.  We did that even when Prabhakaran was alive.  Then, as now, the Tiger flag is waved.  We would never allow an Al Qaeda flag to flutter anywhere in our fair land, folks.  No Al Qaeda slogans either.

And then there’s this other funny thing.  It’s also about numbers, but those numbers were not shot at me when I met Mahinda.  My government never listens to unions or union members who are more numerous than all the brown folk who take to the streets in London.

I also thought how important the Commonwealth is to us.  As a client state of the USA we have nothing to brag about except past glory.  We need the monarchy because that’s the only thing that gives us ‘leadership’ in the CHOGM.  Truth be told, if we became a republic, India might take over the Commonwealth.  That’s what happened to the ICC.

I closed my eyes and the words of a Yaka floated into my dreams.  Loud and clear.  Ox-bridge accent and all to make sure I got the lines right.  Here’s what I heard:

“They have always used the early technique of ‘transference’…
they hit us on the head to get rid of their headaches…
it clears the synapses apparently…
the angst about debt…”

It was nice to get back to London.

Breakdown of law & order in SL is total.

“King” runs nothing, but a corrupt Banana Republic. For his gigantic family, cronies and henchmen.

Malinda & RAjpal may well be a tools in King’s bag.

However, Cameron is a corrupt politician himself. Fact.

Cameron is no friend of human rights or the down trodden either. He just displayed great showmanship in Sri Lanka. To satisfy Ealamistas.

Cameron is engaged in an epic battle with Milliband brothers for hearts & minds of UK’s very loud LTTE lobby.

While dictating a UN probe on SL, Cameron does the opposite for Israel. Effectively blocking any UN probes or Security Council statements against Israel.

Look here they Channel 4 explains how British politics/Camerons/Millibands/Harpers work via lobbysists:

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0E70BwA7xgU

Cameron works to cover his own behind. By satisfying lobbyists. Sri Lankans better understand this hypocrisy. And act accordingly.

      Cheers!

        Ben,

Please get real. Tamil votes do not make a government in UK. I am not a conservative but Cameron is a very decent block. The MR regime had put him in a difficult situation by not implementing what he promised. Do not forget that the UK implicitly supported the war and expected MR to follow through with reconciliation. In the absense of it, SL hosting ChOGM and DC attending with channel 4 revelation it was difficult for DC. He could not boycott because britain’s position in CW. Of course he cares about HR that’s is why Britain sighed up to the EU Human Rights charter.

You simply cannot accept that some one has challenged MR; it is simply pathetic.

          Burning,

Dethroning “The King” would be a pleasure. I look forward to it very much. Sooner the better.

However, it will be done by citizens of Sri Lanka. Not by Cameron, Brits or agents of the LTTE Die-ass-pora.

You seem to be a rock solid fan of Cameron and of good intentions of UK. Well, good for you.

How did Cameron win the election, Burning? Heard of Cameron’s buddy Rebecca Brooks from News of the world? Cameron scratched Rupert Murdoch’s back. Who installed him at No. 10, in return.

What’s Cameron’s position on crimes of Israel, Burning? The exact opposite of his position on Sri Lanka. Cameron uses Britain’s prestige to cover all of Israel’s crimes. And wants to expose Sri Lanka. Why?

Israel lobby makes good contributions to Cameron’s party. It is not beacause of Jewsish votes, Burning.

Has Cameron demanded any investigations into Obama’s drone strikes, Burning? Thousands of civilians are killed Pakistan.

It is true dictator in Colombo has lost his mind. He has in many ways replaced VP. Giving an excuse for outsiders to interfere in Sri Lanka.

          Cheers!

          Cheers!

From 1948, dethroning successive PMs and presidents of Ceylon/Sri Lanka by the Sinhalease citizens resulted in Tamil Genocide. Nothing else for Tamils.

              “Nothing else for Tamils”,
because Tamils have been swollen headed, thought they were more intelligent , more civilized etc. never realizing they were used by British emperors in divide & rule policy by giving them 10 times better jobs/ opportunities / administrative power they really deserved as a minority, but those were Carrots
              only.
Unfortunately Ceylon Tamils expected those Carrots to continue after independence, from Sinhala majority govt.s so was the mistake & rest is history.

“never realizing they were used by British emperors in divide & rule policy ” this is in your little brain. There was no divide and rule policy. We had good schools (nothing to do with British) and good education. So Tamils were employed.

                John,

British employed the educated employable stock; it happened to be mainly the Tamils! There was no need to divide and rule as the communities were already polarised! The Tamils took advantage of the missionary education in most cases without converting to Christianity. Whereas the Sinhala could not match the industry of the Tamils. Please get real and see things for what they were.

So Cameron was corrupt in your view and I ask the British press let him be corrupt!

Rebecca Brooks has been charged and her activities are being scrupulously examined. Her computers and all associated files are being studied for law-breaking. If Cameron had dealing with Brooks that were deemed improper and contrary to parliamentary codes of conduct, where would that leave Cameron. Please Ben do not be pathetic.

On the point about Israel and duplicity of the West I totally agree with you. The situation is not simple as Israel is making much capital out of the Holocaust. However, the recent agreement with Iran has gone against Israel. I am particularly pleased about that. However, on the account of Israel, you can not expect other countries to get away with war crimes and crimes against humanity. Your argument does not bode well I am afraid.

Malinda…bloody sunday, Iraq and etc….who gave the orders to killed rathupassara people? did they get the justice? As a citizen of sri lanka did you raise this point in your paper? why are you want justice for Iraq people without asking justice for your own people? Do you have relations in Iraq or any voters? David C. did ask about Rathupassara…he raises Tamils issue…why it is….UK/Canada/Aus…have constructive diaspora? even now oppositions(labour) have Tamil MP candidates as well…why you need to give priority on Iraq, UK before your own Sinhalese?

No man, he and the rulers are used to shoot the messenger. This has been their nature .. from that day on.

Nobody raised it loudly how that 3 young ones got killed by state forces in Rathupaswala. One of the dead was said to be only son in that family to help his own mother who had raised him as a single mother. See, that kind of crimes that the state exercised without any shame – there, MS award won journalist stay mum…. that is how he has been.. honestly, I hate this kind of journalists. They are trying to find the wrongness in Calum, but what have they been doing ? Your questions are fair :)

Rathupaswala people were killed, no justice done, we’ll sort out that with SL govt. ,
British bullish PM has no role to play here with LTTE terrorist war whilst they themselves have million skeletons of Iraqi people in their cupboards, there where things gone wrong, that’s why Sri Lankans, Sinhalese are against any UK/US or any body talking nonsense & expose those hypocrites

What is wrong with Malinda? All because we could find fault in someone who points out our MISTAKES, can we say we are clean too? The fact is Malinda of this world would NEVER find a job anywhere else when Rajapakse’s are driven out of power. But, the Malindas of this world know very well than they could keep the people under control with the drugs, brothels, casions and jingosim (‘aiyo aiyo, Buddhsit culture is raped by the Muslims and Christians…’ chorus). A Lanka Spring will through Malinda in the unemployment line.

      Rohan,

That SOMEONE doesn’t have any moral right to interfere in our affairs. It is up to us to sort out our issues and we will do it.

A Lanka spring can only be lead by Lankans. As SL High Commissioner to UK said, we have the capacity nurtured over 2,500 years to deal with our issues.

Super stuff Malinda! I’ve enjoyed your prodigious output on David Cameron.

Looking forward to your columns about the Weliweriya massacre, the problems of corruption and nepotism in Sri Lanka, the murder and harassment of your fellow journalists and how the allegations of Sri Lankan extra-judicial killings from the ’70s onwards (during the various JVP insurrections) are also part of the Western conspiracy against Sri Lankan.

Who are the MODAYAS here. It is the tamils. Whites came, gave tamils importance and used them to rule over the majority Sinhala. When they left, they also left a divide between these two former friendly and tolerant ethnic groups. Who were the losers: Tamil modayas. 70-years later comes the pretentious and crafty Cameron, ex-journalist. Pompously, he marches to Jaffna, spends 20-min in a loo (or equivalent), marches back to Colombo, and utters nonsense. He made himself a fool (Modaya)commenting on a country’s politics and anthropology, culture and what makes the society tick. If he is so bloody clever, then why does not he get Britain back to work and make it great again, instead of a bankrupt nation since he took over PM. The fact of he matter is he is a modaya; British PM’s booys are too big for him. He may look big in flesh and blood, but his brain is of the size of a bird’s brain. What about the tamil diaspora? hey are the biggest modaya of all. They think their votes manipulation would win friends at high places. LOL. It did not work for the dumb-goat. He expected a flotilla of ships would come and rescue him and his 40,000 terrorists guarding him, to be taken for a cushy life in the UK. Millband came and went with a chip on his shoulder, lost his credibility and lost out to his baby brother. VP got nothing, except the death. Tamils ended up confused not knowing to whom to cast the votes. Now comes Cameron, thinking he has a trump card to play to win over tamil votes. He played out his silly act, thinks he made enough impression to fool the tamil modayas in UK, hoping that he would win the marginals for cons party. The whole thing was a con, because at the end MR put him in his place, despite all the hot air he was spewing out. Now I wait to see how tamil modaya’s in London would vote: everyone is making fools out of tamils.

Who can the worst modays, the Tamils who are the persecuted minority or the Sinhalas who are ruled by a dictator? The point is that the Tamil knew whom they were under and rebelled, but the Sinhalas are very comfortable under the Kurakkan Rulers!

So Mr Cameron doesn’t allow anyone to wave the AQ Flag or shout AQ slogans on the land of free expression ?.

Another bastion of Mahinda Chinthanaya. David Cameron in his wildest dreams cannot have a familial regime in the UK. He cannot dismantle the Judiciary as the Rajapaksa regime has done. He cannot have thugs, child molesters, drug traffickers and known criminals in his parliament. As the Prime Minister he cannot stay put if the UK armed forces deliberately shot at and killed civilians for asking for clean water… He also cannot have a terrorist mastermind engaged in child recruits, and hacking death to clergy and many civilians sitting as a minister in his parliament and also if his Defence Minister arranged a false diplomatic passport to a such terrorist leader David Cameron have been brought to the courts and dealt with the rule of law. In Sri Lanka the rule of law has been replaced with unquestionable impunity, grandly labelled as ‘development’ and ‘patriotism’. The president asked himself to be put on the spot at CHOGM by hosting it and the light that David Cameron and others shed on his deeds is penetrating and baring everything in details… the nudity cannot be covered anymore.

      Austar,

True. UK has far better Institutions. Checkes & balances to ensure politicians do not abuse power too much.

It is also true Rajapassa clan is utterly corrupt & lawless.

However, it does not exclude the fact that Cameron is a hypocrite. On assignment to save his own behind, at the expense of Sri Lanka.

True UK does not have the likes of Karuna as a Cabinet ministers. At the moement. But, UK had Tony Blair as PM. Who was an undecalred War Criminal. Still free to go globe trotting.

Saudi Arabia which engages in child brides, public beheadings, mutilations, torture and all sorts of other grave HR violations is a close ally of the UK. Welcome always to sleep over at the Buckingham Palace. And to be driven in Royal Horse Carriages through streets of London like a Mandela.

      How come? And why?

      Cheers!

      Austar,

David Cameron does all of the above and more in other countries to millions of people.

He can and will take anyone he wishes and put on a plane to another country, torture and dispose without any trace. MR is just a kindergarden kid compared to that stuff.

His special forces have done similar stuff in Northern Ireland which have never been investigated.

As I departed one emerald isle for the emerald isle that I call home, I was seething with envy. Oh Serendib! Oh Emerald Isle, count your blessings and know that you are the envy of the world. How so? Well, let me count the ways:
First, how nice it would be if Ed Milliband was a eunuch who preferred the comforts of his office, all the perks of being in the opposition, and was abroad most of the time, and his tenure ensured by an appointments committee appointed by him and totally beholden to him. So I can remain running this country to the ground, and the suckers, most of them brain damaged fools, will have no option but to continue electing me.
Second, how nice it would be unleash some rabid vicars on the mosques, synagogues, and temples of this country, where they can bray their messages of hatred, while my brothers and I collect commissions from the Russians for allowing them to buy whole chunks of the country. The Christian vicars might well be Taliban, but who cares, especially if the Archbishops of Canterbury and York keep a stony silence because if they so much as utter a word against these rabid vicars, I will jerk their privileges.
Third, how nice it would be if I can fill every little official crevice of state with my brothers, cousins, nephews, in-laws, and hangers-on. My brother in law can run British Airways even if he is not competent to run a local bun shop. Ha, ha, nice cascade of pounds to me and mine.
Fourth, that pesky Lord Chief Justice. Time to give him a reality check, let me impeach the bastard, and put my brother’s footstool in place. There will be protests, but who gives a damn. I will have my brownshirts outside his official residence shouting obscenities while my supporters serve them tea and scones. I can count on a buffoon in the Commons to shout, “We told the Supreme Court to go to hell!” Nice, eh?
Fifth, if I can divert the attention of the whole country on to the demands of those stingy Scots, how wonderful life would be!! “They want special rights, rights to wear their kilts, they want to separate, I would cry”, and the country would rise in unison and cheer me. It helps a lot that these Scots are stupid enough to play into my hands by always, always, talking about their problems and their problems only without try to integrate into the UK.
Sixth, even as our Ashes team in now at the GABBA, wouldn’t it be nice to have a minister of mine be the chief selector of the cricket team and insert the son of another one of my minister’s into the team. Cook is a mediocre fellow who has not performed and he knows he will have to ingratiate himself to us and give the minister’s son a bowl ahead of far more competent blokes like Broad and Anderson. Okay, the son is a poor fielder, but so what? If we can’t drop sitters, then there won’t be a word called “sitter” know?
Seventh, how nice it would be if all my critics from the Guardian, Independent, New Statesmen, have had to flee Britain! One word against me and a white van with no license plates turn around. Soon these critics would feed the fish in the North Sea. An Environmentalist, I am!
Finally, No. 10 would save tons and tons on toilet paper. Because whenever I or someone close to me takes a crap, we have to summon our journalists (still remaining in this demi-paradise), ministers, officials, and they will actually fight among themselves to lick our backsides clean. Now how cool is that!!!
So Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka, remember how blessed you are! Thank your gods for the real saviour, more powerful, more enduring, and more lovable than the cuddly teddy bear who rules North Korea!!!

    Malinda,

Stuff bloody Cameron! Why do we have this predilection for paying attention to others. Our business is the shit swilling about in our pot. As for Cameron, he came because he had to and we could be deaf to his entreaties. Why are you so fixated with foreigners? Is there something we should know?

Our concern now is this: The GoSL couldn’t/didn’t find anyone responsible for the debacles of 1958, 1971, 1977, 1983, 1987-89. So why should we expect them to do any better now? Let’s clean this mess up now chum.

    • 0
      0

      Chum,

We don’t have any predilection for paying attention to others. But when others taking advantage of our hospitality comes to our place and shit around, we have no choice other than put them in their place.

Yes, we will clean our place in our own terms.

      • 0
        0

Clean up on our terms? Bollocks! I don’t see that we did anything on our terms; we just faffed about and had to get in the intelligence and ordnance – simply we had to fight our wars using other peoples weapons. In fact when Sirima called for help the Pakis, and the Brits and Indians guarded our airports, harbours, radio stations, temple trees, queens house etc etc. When Premadasa needed the know-how to finish of our own sinhalese he didn’t think twice about getting Israeli advice. MaRa acknowledged the valuable help the aspuncha’s gave us (though he kept quiet about the others). We are good at talking big now….clean up on our terms. Twice bollocks! Sadly, nobody trusts any Sri Lankan to complete a job these days. Certainly not where impartiality is a sine qua non.

David Cameron is a disgrace. talking down and bulling a 3rd world powerless nation. he should have been kicked out of his neo colonial ass. After all that drama if he ends up not getting the tamil vote- serves him right. He will look stupid indeed. hope that happens

    • 0

Bollocks! Truth to tell, not a single UK politician depends on tamil votes to get elected. As the people there will acknowledge, the tamils are divided themselves – the latest political tamil, Uma, is a labour party candidate in Harrow. We have to tolerate the likes of Cameron and other foreigners because our citizens – tamil and sinhalese – are clogging up their streets, washing our dirty linen in front of bemused locals who are rushing to their atlas’s to see where the hell SL is.

I noticed that the readership of the “Nation” has dropped to 3 visits per day. One from you, other from your junior partner and other form you funder hoping that you will have some impact on the Nation’s View.

I am glad that you recognise the importance of your presence in Colombo Telegraph – which unfailingly gives you a good sense of what the Nation thinks of your pujas.
