Defiance & Desperation

By Ameer Ali

Dr. Ameer Ali

Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Mahinda Rajapaksa are defiant and determined to stay put where they are against call for them to Go Home from island wide aragalaya. Similarly, “No 225”, had panicked sitting members in the parliament and turned them into a bunch of desperados trying every possible means to extend their career on taxpayer money for the best part of the two remaining years. They are desperate because many of them know that they have little or zero chance of returning to parliament were an election held soon. This in essence explains the hectic inter-party bargaining in the parliament sparked by aragalaya. The declaration of emergency for a second time by the President also underscores this defiance and desperation.

But the question facing the nation is, how long would this impasse go on and at what cost to the economy, which is already gasping for breath. Economic stability and revival cannot be achieved without political stability. IMF assistance, foreign and local investment, new budget and other remedial measures cannot be undertaken without approval from the parliament and that parliament is currently dysfunctional and in disarray. In the meantime, there is no sign of aragalaya losing its vigour. On the contrary, there is every sign of it gaining momentum with added strength from the entry of trade unions and undergraduates. As economic conditions continue to worsen even housewives and farmers would be encouraged to enter the fray and turn aragalaya into a popular uprising if not a fully fledge revolution. All this because of the defiance of GR and MR. What is so worthy of these two brothers?

Minister Ali Sabry described the 2019 tax cuts a “historic mistake”. Wasn’t GR who made that historic mistake? Wasn’t he who single handedly ruined the country’s food production by banning importation of chemical fertilizer in the name of green farming? Wasn’t he who commandeered the Central Bank to support his policies and planted his handpicked men and woman to the monetary board?  Wasn’t he who advised government officials that his circulars should be taken as orders? Wasn’t he who militarized civilian administration? The parlous state of public revenue and widening budget deficit, increased prices and shortage of food, and escalating inflation and falling real income are his gifts to the community. Wasn’t he advised and warned by experts from outside his viyathmaga cabal of the dangers of his actions? He showed total disrespect to their advice and blindly went ahead with the so-called alternate route to development that ended in disaster. He has lost all credibility, and how could anyone with sanity justify his continuation as President of this country?

In the same vein, what could justify the continuation of MR as Prime Minister? If there is one thing that future generations of Sri Lankans would commemorate about MR it would be the white elephants that he had created with borrowed funds. Mattala Air Port, Hambantota Stadium and the Lotus Tower among several others would speak eloquently how this man wasted millions of dollars for the sake of personal prestige. Similarly, the express ways and high ways which were constructed in the name of development are now practically empty of traffic unable to recover even the operating cost of these mega thoroughfares. Above all, what fortunes did he and his family amassed out of these white elephants deserve a separate and independent investigation. Why did MR not take any court action against his secretary who stole money by using the PM’s bank card, if not for the fear of the culprit spilling more beans in the court about his boss’ ill-gotten wealth? Aragalaya also demands investigation, not only into his clan’s wealth but also of other ministers and parliamentarians from his political party. On the whole, behind MR’s defiance to resign is the mortal fear that a new regime that would come to power in the wake of aragalaya’s demand for systemic change would do everything within its means to recover the loot. How else could one end corruption in the country that has grown like cancer and bankrupted the nation?

The prevailing impasse reveals that a majority of the 225 parliamentarians would wish to continue with the status quo. One reason for this wish is the that they too would be made accountable by the next regime for all what they did while in power. The new generation that is agitating for change should not be dismissed as an irresponsible and romantic mob of youngsters who would give up their protest once food, fuel supply and other essentials are guaranteed by whatever means. That seems to be the thinking in the ruling circle. They are, on the contrary, an awakened community of matured and responsible adults who are knowledgeable enough to understand the various forces in the past seventy odd years which operated to bring down the country’s economy to its nadir.

Galle Face Green, unless turned into a Sri Lankan mini or mild Jalianwala Bagh by GR’s gendarmerie, should usher in a New Sri Lanka governed by representatives who would be intellectually more capable and morally superior to the majority of members in the present legislature. They would be expected to dedicate themselves to build a united and genuinely democratic republic, free of any ethnic, religious or language bias, and lead the nation to a new, just and prosperous destiny. Sri Lanka’s multicultural polity should once again thrive as it did in pre-colonial past.

However, there are hurdles and hidden dangers to overcome. Already one former minister, Sarath Weerasekera, has tried to rekindle that dreadful Sinhala Buddhist nationalism by maligning Galle Face protest as being infiltrated by Eelam seekers and saboteurs of Buddhism.  How preposterous could this claim be given the social amity and mutual respect that is reigning in that place? Another ex-minister had tarnished aragalaya as a sinister plot hatched by outsiders. These malicious accusations are intended to create a political climate to justify the use of force to clear the venue.  But the world is watching the developments. GR would be foolish to unleash violence on an unarmed and peaceful clamour for change.

Removal of GR and MR is a precondition to any economic reparation. The desperados in parliament should realize this fact and as their final act take steps to pave the way for a smooth transition before vacating the seats.

Assuming for some unknown mysterious reasons you are being appointed/elected to the executive presidency of this island, apart from shooting me in the b***s, what would be the first positive action we can reliably expect you to perform.? Then the one after that, then the one after that, ……..

Nimal , it’s obvious as AA says everyday Rajapaksas stay is bleeding, the already empty treasury by 1) delaying remedies 2 ) standstill caused by protest 3) unwanted parliamentary, judiciary, security proceeding 4 ) disruption in services 5 ) prolonging public’s pain and suffering . This is the Pseudo patriotism they had been putting up all their life. Some financial fakes trying to say protest causing more economic damage is a joke ” victimizing the victim ” typical Rajapaksas mode of thinking.

The country s economy is on the edge of a precipice, with almost nothing left as reserves in CB. Peoples across the country equally sturggle for their day today life. However, president s right hand – incumbent army commander, Shravenda Silva aka number one adhrent of Ghanakka sekte to have lavishly spent few hundreds of millions to gift their high ranking army officers is beyond all ethics and morals.

One of MR’s sycophants has asked: “Sir, if you resign, will dollars rain from sky? ……and so on”.
It may not rain dollars but at least his resignation will stop the dollars leaking out to overseas accounts.
And yes, it may rain dollars if a future govt is bold enough to go after the hidden treasures in Ali Baba’s cave in Uganda.

It seems Percy and Goaty are unable to take a hint (quite a loud one, actually), and do the right thing for the people and country. They have failed very badly, let this nation down, and it has resulted in people suffering, and living without hope. This is basically failed leadership due to idiotic policies, corruption, nepotism, and mismanagement. Clinging on to power is not helping the country. For this nation to recover from this hellish place we are in, the two clowns have to go. As long as even one is in power, we will continue to be in this morass of lies, promises, and stagnation. They must be afraid that if they step down, there will be efforts to investigate all their corruption and crimes.

Percy and Goaty have overstayed their welcome and the nation continues to suffer.

The best joke of the century – MR says, he can’t resign as he is busy implementing an Economic Recovery Program. May be, he is thinking of bringing back the dollars from Uganda and saving a spot for NBaby.

Ashan , this behavior of Percy and Gota answers to what they were doing, the night of loosing the election ?? Like Trump he was definitely not going to leave. RW , Sarath and the rest should answer what were they doing being there with Percy??? RW admitted he was there to assure safe passage to Percy. Does it look now he needed such assurance?? MS through out maintained its him who needed assurance . Protesters should readdress this question when they meet him at Srikotha.

Not even hours passed since I typed above statement , conman Mara actually invited people into Temple Trees to organize attack, on protesters by giving them arrack / kassipu , food parcels and money. Moratuwa mayor sent three bus loads of thugs, and some of the former MP’ s too were present at the site. They went after protesters, women, clergies, journalist you name it no one was spared. Soon after conman released statement saying violence will be met by violence and resigned. A typical A.Hole kept in power by 6.9 million, for two decades.

Love the names. They are not hint takers. The latest is that Yoshitha the murderer of Wasim wants to bring down His father’s supporters and show their strength to prevent his sacking. Bappa is scared of the fellow since he can run into rage and get his Navy goon squad to bump off Bappa. Yoshitha is a sychopath who needs to be locked up in an insane asylum. These are all murders. They need to be forced out. They will not go any other way. The armed forces have to step up since they are the ones with the guns. The public have done all they can. The countries reserves are now down to 25 Million USD. We even begged Bangladesh to put off repayment. We are now worse than beggars. They found money to import tear gas and water cannon vehicles. 24 million USD was spent of the import of steel to make barricades. That is the level of their nastiness and determination to use brute force to hang on. Parliament are full of self serving idiots. They will not act.

Ranil Wickremasinghe needs to stop FOOLING the citizens who are protesting against the current set up.
As a first step they want the President and PM to resign from their jobs paving way for a Government that has politicians and technocrats who are well educated and incorruptible people. None of the SLFP UNP or SLPP politicians should be part of the new governing body.

RW is eagerly awaiting to take over the global financial fiasco Rajapaksas installed. He will reduce it to the small exclusive club that his UNP always had (and a bit more) – one that would go well with global markets. Rajapaksa’s went mightily and clumsily with it, thinking their personal greatness and soothsaying machines would magically lift Mother Lanka up to great heights, like the Lotus Tower.

The rascals dragged and dragged the resigning for ever. Now they have found some coolies to go and create trouble in Galle Face Green. This is what they always did for a solution to Tamils. This is how they fought the war for peace. How a man who have had composed song praising as him Maharajanee, would leave without any effort. Lawyers should apply at Colombo High Court to redirect the Coolies’ protest to Medamulana, not in Colombo.

“…it would be the white elephants that he had created with borrowed funds.”
    —-
The projects that Mahinda Rajapakshe implemented are not ‘White Elephants’ as some dumbos who dislike Rajapakshes think. Those projects were formulated by the members of the Southern Development Board formed by Chandrika Kumaratunga. But unfortunately, the full benefits of those projects could not be enjoyed by people because 6,217,162 retards sent Mahinda Rajapakshe to Medamulana and brought two dong keys who ruined those projects.

      Dear EE.
Your saying it repeatedly adds no truth to it. As I said earlier, that is not the fact.
.. Those projects were formulated by the members of the Southern Development Board formed by Chandrika Kumaratunga…
Yes very true but they were long term plans to be undertaken after evaluating available financial resources on long term credit with 10 years grace and about 1 – 2% interest, like from ADB, JICA or other Development Bank.
But the R’s in their haste to loot, took commercial loans from China at high interest and only 3 years or so grace, and implemented all projects in five/six years when it should have been spaced out over time. This created the initial crunch on our foreign debt repayments as these projects have yielded no returns to meet at least some repayment costs.
Also no commissions can be had on ADB, JICA or other established Development Banks, but China fitted the need, to siphon funds away.
They did this again by cancelling the Light Train Project to be financed by Japan on concessionary terms, immediately in power in 2020 and pushed ahead with Expressways, making “jam” as usual.

Well-known fact this stupid retard is attempting to ‘whitewash’ and cover up now, is that there was no EIA or importantly RoI study report done and complied!!!
What is the RoI on the Nelum Pokuna project and the Lotus Tower Project?? If they have sufficient RoI, what is the cause not to repay the loan, but default?’

Did you ever bother to find out what happened to billions Ranil and his ‘Royal Gang’ borrowed during ‘Yahapalana’ Government?
What happened to the check given by Chinese to Ranil for selling Hambantota port?
Rajapakshes’ corruption is nothing compared to corruption of ‘Yahapalana’ goons. Yet, ‘Maha Benku Hora’ come to the Parliament wearing tie and coat as if nothing happened. He should be in Welikada, not in the Parliament. ‘Aragalakaruwo’ should go and protest in front of his house shouting ‘Return what you robbed from the people’.

My loyalty is not for Rajapakshes but to my country; Sinhale, the Land of Sinhalayo and Vedda Eththo. I respect Rajapakshes (except Basil who is a crook) for saving my country from Dravidians who wanted to grab land belong to indigenous Sinhalayo to create a separate State.

6.2m retards sent Rajapakshes home and 6.9 patriots brought them back because Ranil and Sirisena ruined this country and shattered peace people enjoyed after eliminating Tamil terrorists who carried out genocide of Sinhala Buddhists for three decades by allowing Muslim terrorists to carry out attacks while they had the opportunity to prevent that.

GR, MR and their cohorts are betting on the mighty armed forces and protester fatigue to exit the quagmire. They are probably banking on introducing non-existent divisions amongst the people to stay in power or close to power. They will sooner or later realise that their time has run out and it is time to pack their bags. What is preventing them from doing so now, is the fear of future for them and their criminal clan. Should they be provided an off-ramp or should they face the full force of the law? Are deals being worked on behind the scenes for golden handshake? Are the people going to be the losers again?

If one studies contemporary world history, one would instantly see that no utterly despised dictator or corrupt regime ever gave way to legitimate demands for their removal, but either used state power including govt guns or goons to quell the resistance or revolution, thus bringing upon themselves, after much bloodshed, a horrific end by being literally torn to pieces by a very hungry and utterly desperate population willing to risk death by govt bullets in preference to a slower death from starvation. Alas, the parasitic jackals that infest SL’s parliament are virtually illiterate and uneducated, dreaming instead of a somehow happy end.

“Removal of GR and MR is a precondition to any economic reparation. “
    Who removes? How?
Are we to end up with another pair to continue their ‘good work’?
We have to think beyond “go homes”.
    *
Can the economy revive without curtailing wasteful consumption? (The IMF will have none of it, as free trade must go on. So bleed the poor to pay the debts.)
Rescheduling debts is only to continue indebtedness.
Ahilan Kadirgamar consistently writes sense on socio-economic matters in his column in the Daily Mirror. I wish that those pinning their hopes on IMF and rescheduling debts read him occasionally.

“Are we to end up with another pair to continue their ‘good work’?”

So, it is better to allow the family to continue their “good work”?

“(The IMF will have none of it, as free trade must go on. So bleed the poor to pay the debts.)”
So, it is better to continue to bleed the poor to pay the debts of China and Rajapaksa family.

        A
You do not have the foggiest idea of who the country’s creditors are.
You see only China for that is what the chorus sings here.
Why don’t you read a little on what IMF does if you want to know how the poor are bled.
Have you not noticed that it has been India that propped up the regime in the last 5 months or so. (But it extracted its pound of flesh in advance though.)

Defiance & Desperation, certainly its desperation, the Rajapakses are facing a dilemma. If they step down, they can’t stay in SL but no country would be willing to give them refegue, apart from maybe, Uganda or some tin pot country where a ‘golden passport’ can be bought for a couple of millions.

The Rajapakses & their merry men certainly have to be investigated & the ill gotten wealth brought back to the country. Just like the Russian oligarchs, they should be hunted down with international investigations & the culprits, from the minnows to the sharks, brought to justice. However, the current bunch in the opposition are unlikely to start the ball rolling because their hands could also be in the cookie jar.

A British parliamentarian has stated that governing a country is not a legacy but an honour, so its time to get rid of family bandism & start with a new set of people with integrity, not self serving uneducated yobs, thugs & bum sucking cronies.

GR and MR knew exactly what they were doing. They knew the associated risks. In the possible event of financial disaster, they thought the people would still worship them as Kings showing vistas of glory. It was all part of their grand plan for final conquest of the world’s financial system, even if it would have taken several decades and generations.

I do not doubt there being dubious ownership by the family. But I am not sure where the data are from.
Out of curiosity I checked for “Yoshita owns Baidu Co in China. Shares valued at 7 Billion $.”
Individually the top 10 owners of Baidu Inc own between 329 million and 1188 million USD in shares.
      *
Baidu, Inc. is a Chinese multinational technology company specializing in Internet-related services and products and artificial intelligence, headquartered in Beijing’s Haidian District. It is one of the largest AI and Internet companies in the world.

      Punchi,
A diamond mine is worth only $7 million?
You ought not to put too much credence in WhatsApp messages.
We all know the Rajapaksas are crooks. But can you make billions of USD from one small island? Get real.
