The arbitrary arrest and detention of Jeyakumari Balendran in April this year, can be perceived as an attempt to cause fear among victims of the war who have not had any relief from the State and may wish to take their cause before the UN Inquiry, the National Peace Council (NPC) said today.

Pointing out her arrest has intimidated local Human Rights Defenders (HRDs) due to the chilling message it has sent across – that their activism may be punished, the NPC in a statement issued to mark the International Day of Victims of Enforced Disappearances that fell on August 30, the NPC has shed light on Jeyakumari – a campaigner for those who went missing during the war- who is yet detained, separated from her 13 year-old daughter.
The NPC notes that her arrest has also raised concerns over manipulating the PTA to target and take arbitrary punitive action against those who speak out on behalf of those who went missing during the war.
While recalling the Army Spokesperson’s statement where he claimed that Jeyakumari was arrested for habouring an armed criminal wanted in connection with an ongoing investigation, the NPC states that to their knowledge, no credible evidence has been produced by the government to substantiate the allegations against her to determine that she was in any way involved in aiding and abetting the LTTE revivalists.
The organisation has pointed out that indefinite detention without charges gives rise to the reasonable suspicion that Jeyakumari is being penalised, deprived of her fundamental rights for speaking out on behalf of families who are seeking whereabouts of their loved ones who are missing.
They have also expressed concern for Jeyakumari’s mental wellbeing and physical safety against the backdrop of mounting allegations of torture that are being made against law enforcement officials.
Furthermore in the statement the NPC has called upon the National Human Rights Commission to probe into Jeyakumari’s case and other similar cases where persons have been detained under the PTA without being brought to trial.
“We also believe that the abuse of the PTA to detain persons to intimidate and silence them highlights the need for its repeal and re-affirms the citizen’s right to speak out and campaign for human rights and justice,” it adds.
Previously this year in March, several other HRDs were arrested and some of them were released following unrelenting international and local protests calling for their release.

Why all these attempts to hush up those who want to speak about war disappearances and crimes against humanity if they didn’t commit any?
It’s obvious that they committed all the heinous crimes on earth on innocent civilians during the war.
The more they try to muffle, the more it becomes convincing that they committed war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide of Tamils barring outside witnesses.

COLOMBO: Former Singaporean prime minister Lee Kuan Yew has described Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse as a Sinhalese extremist.
He also described what happened in Sri Lanka in 2009, during the end of the civil war, as ethnic cleansing.
The father of modern day Singapore made this statement during a conversation with author Thomas Plate, who wrote the book ‘Citizen Singapore: How to Build a Nation – Conversations with Lee Kuan Yew.
Lee described Sri Lanka as an “unhappy country” as it was disunited between the Sinhalese and Jaffna Tamils for decades.
“Yes, they have beaten the Tamil Tigers this time, but the Sinhalese who are less capable are putting down a minority of Jaffna Tamils who are more capable. They were squeezing them out.
“That’s why the Tamils rebelled. But I do not see them getting rid of all two million-plus Jaffna Tamils. The Jaffna Tamils have been in Sri Lanka as long as the Sinhalese.” he said.

Lee: That’s right.
Plate: They [the Tigers] will come back, you think?
Lee: I don’t think they are going to be submissive or go away. The present president of Sri Lanka believes he has settled the problem; Tamil Tigers are killed and that is that.
Plate: See, that’s really a fascinating point, because to the extent that we have any sense of who you are at all, we think of you as this hard-boiled force first guy. But in fact your system of government is much softer, consensual and intelligent, whereas what the Sinhalese in Sri Lanka are doing is a caricature of a Lee who never existed.
Lee: I’ve read his speeches (Rajapakse) and I knew he was a Sinhalese extremist. I cannot change his mind.
In 2009, the Sri Lankan government crushed the Tamil Tigers, ending decades of civil war that tore the country apart between the Sinhalese majority and its Tamil minority.

Today because of stress and needs to socialise the Chinese of Singapore like the western counterparts have less children. Everyone has forgotten about this poor lady and her daughter. Even the human rights defenders Mr Fernando and that Christian Father/Brother who went to help them were both harassed, incarcerated and we don’t know what they are doing now ! The lady is kept in detention in Boossa,the notorious torture facility in the middle of a down South, Sinhala only area, far away from her Northern native town, as usual on trumped up charges and the whole world knows how they are being kept illegally without framing any charges.
Who could help this politically punished victim ? Either she has to suffer and wait until this regime is gone, or suffer until her death due to her mental and physical torture.
