State Minister of Highways, Dilan Perera said on Sunday that former Presidents Mahinda Rajapaksa, and Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga were both power hungry and hence they were latching onto power in whatever way they could.
Addressing a meeting in Badulla, he also said that incumbent Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was also equally power hungry, which was why he was Prime Minister yet again, even though he had held the position four times before.
“Only one politician set a good example to us and that is President Maithripala Sirisena, who relinquished his power by giving up the Executive Presidency, which had the power to do anything except change a man into a woman and a woman into a man,” Perera said.
He also said that former President Kumaratunga, who was his one-time leader was so power hungry that even after serving as President twice, if she was given the post of Gampaha Mayor she will take it up.
“Even after been elected as President twice, she is so power hungry that now she is sitting in Gampaha meetings by force as a Coordinating Secretary. Even if she is given the position of the Gampaha Mayor, she will take it,” Perera accused.
He also said that if Rajapaksa wanted he could have always opted out from contesting the Parliamentary election even though he claimed that it was the people who asked him to contest. “He could have always told them he was President of the country twice, and so he did not want to become a parliamentarian,” he added.
Perera added that from all these politicians it was only Sirisena who had shown that politicians should not forcefully latch on to power. (By Munza Mushtaq @ Colombo Telegraph)
