Do It Right: Buying Condoms In Sri Lanka

The first phase of ‘Do it right’, a campaign carried out by the Rotaract Club of Cinnamon Gardens.

“Don’t be afraid to talk about sex! To put it frankly, if people can do sex, why do people make such a fuss when talking about it? So, don’t get confined to taboo and always be open minded about all issues, including what is being discussed and demonstrated in this video” says the campaign.

Presented by the Rotaract Club of Cinnamon Gardens!

Condom Vending Machines are common in other countries, and should be installed in sri lanka,in secluded places.
This will prevent any embarassment for the purchaser, and will protect his/her identity.
Morning After Pills are for “emergency contraception” – to aviod conception after unprotected intercourse, and also should be available.
IUCDs – Intra Uterine Contraceptive Devices – commonly called “loops” are very effective and are inserted into the uterus via the vagina,in a simple ‘office procedure’ and do not interfere with menstruation, and are left in place for five years.
They are also a means of ’emergency post-coital contraception’, when inserted within three days of unprotected intercourse.
Oral Contraceptive Pills are very effective too.
There are Injectable Contraceptives which last three months.
The government should health educate the people about these,by free pamphlets in hospitals and health service locations.Social Service Organisations too could assist.

Hats of to the campaign presented by the Rotaract Club of Cinnamon Gardens.

We need to break down this terrible taboo in Sri Lanka.

The aim is to educate the Sri Lankan public?

We need to get this video done in Sinhalese and Tamil asap. Sri Lankan languages are the key. Otherwise it will be a wasted effort. Just an idea.

Anyway good start and well done!

    Awesome! Isn’t it?.

Such fresh looking young faces know so much about sizes and shapes and colors!.

Glad it is in English, because unlike in Cinnamon Gardens, the great majority of our inhabitant youth who are rural people do not need such devices.

Don’t the parents of these privileged ,often whinge here about how bad the things are in Motherland, and they need other forms of protection as well ?.

What a stark raving twit you are, Sumanay…. this is ground-breaking stuff and is to be lauded for it’s bravery in bringing this message out openly. I have no idea in what language those who brought you into this world whispered sweet nothings in each others’ ear, but most likely they did. The language of sex is universal and it’s only an idiot who will try to sweep it under the covers, thereby risking waves of STD-s and unplanned pregnancies.

Now go wash your mouth with pynol and say a few hail mary’s or the equivalent.

      Buddy

FYI, Aids and HIV rates are slowly going up in SL. It is a serious matter.

So, get serious. And do something.

Sex is a part of life. Even among political families of the South that you seem adore unconditionally.

Knowledge and prevention are key weapons in this battle.

From where can you buy Halal condoms? :O

      1

      Presi,
This is a mocking at the word “Halal” which is a widely known “Permissible” thing for a Muslim.
For your kind information for this particular product there is no need to look for whether its Halal or Not but certainly to use the product the partner has to be “Halal” Menas it has to be only the husband and wife. A Muslim is careful enough to see all his actions are Halal before he or she commits it, Halal or the permissibility not only for the food but for all the actions as well. If you pose the question whether to use the condom is Halal or not this valid and can be discussed but not the product itself. If you would like to know more about Halal we may discuss, but Please stop mocking at the word Halal itself.

You have given a good explanation to the people who do not know of Halal and the other things in Islam.

Does Minister Rauf Hakeem know about Halal…..

Ok but only Halal condoms are allowed OK

I guess Duncie’s usual whining about racism in SL doesn’t extend to his own anti-Muslim feelings.

Condoms can prevent fertilization and transmission of STDs. Preventing fertilization through condoms is generally not allowed in Islam. Since there were no any condoms in use during the time of the Prophet, there are no explicit rulings on this. However, he had mentioned at least one halal food as contraceptive, so one could presume he too allowed birth control. The Muslims who do disagree with me could make a condom halal by putting a hole at the tip so as to allow pregnancy and at the same time prevent STDs.

      Dear PDN,
Would you kindly listen to the interview given recently by Mansoor Dahlan to Young Asia TV in which he clearly explains what is Halal and what is not. You could enlighten yourself on the issue. Without enlightening yourself on any issue do not grab something from the air as done by the Boda Bala Sena (the off-shoot of the Hindu Extremist Siva Senna in India) and the JHU and make baseless references.

Very timely promotion, in view of SL ranking first place in Google
    searches for word “Sex”.
The Grama Seveka Offices could make the relevant literature freely
available and a Presentation “Package” with literature, promotional
Condoms supplied by Manufacturers and a Booklet on Family guidelines
be presented by Marriage Registrar Offices freely, all over the
    Island.

In the late sixties, japanese condoms were marketed.
These came in packs of four, and were perfumed, lubricated and in various colurs – red, blue, green & yellow.
Samples were sent to Medical Officers of Health, for sale through public heath midwives, but sales were very low and no more were imported.
Normal condoms were sold for 05 (five) cents each,at family planning clinics – in addition to oral contraceptive pills,at a Rupee per packet of 21 pills.
Midwives demonstrated how condoms were to be used by holding up the left thumb and rolling the condom over it with the right thumb and forefinger.
Later a woman complained that she had become pregnant, though using condoms!
The midwife asked her how they were used, and the woman confided that she was wearing the condom on her left thumb as demonstrated, during intercourse ! ! !

Before promoting sex, they should promote physical fitness and basic hygiene.

When promoting safe sex prostitution must be legalized in this country. Most of the rape cases reporting from every where will be greatly reduced.police must stop raiding places where sex is sold for money. It must be legalized.

to K.A. Sumanasekera our rural youth are the ones who need sex education and condoms as these uneducated types (such as you) are the ones getting into all kinds of mischief…great majority of our people have so far done a brilliant job at becoming a shining beacon on the world stage eh? You must be on some very powerful drugs to think that…

This reminds me the murder of that British RED CROSS worker who got killed by uneducated president sympathizers a year ago. That guy is for some reasons is set to be free now, but nothing seems to have changed to the betterment. Just to see white females make those idiots feeling like easy to approach – all these are lack of knowledge about the foreigners. This is an alarming situation of those areas. From that incidents on, tourist board and other authorities could start adequate awareness programs against all kinds of such sex crimes. They boast about promoting tourism, but what I got to read was attacks against foreigners (females) were on a rise.

I think before promoting sex, they should promote romance, loving relationship, affection, smooth and constructive communication, intimacy, sharing, caring, understanding, body language, relaxing, male and female anatomies and how they function, foreplay, hygine and cleanleness etc…etc…

Not the three minute piston engine, enna penna type ……..or act as animals which is disgusting.

When it comes to love and Romance….Sri Lankan Youth and Male are way behind simply because they are not so romantic and not being taught properly…….when our girls are more romantic, loving, cute, delicate and sexy with lots of affection.

We should have more parks, play grounds and board and side walks and indoor and outdoor dine outs.

Over to you Rotarareact Club to take over the rest…….

What a load of inane drivel this is, from a bunch of wannabe posh kids! For me, the shock of learning that my kid had joined the Roteract club would be far greater than learning he/she bought condoms regularly!

So Sri Lankan teenagers need to be told what a condom is? Gimme a break! We knew what they were at the age of 10. Just lacked the opportunities to use them!

This should NOT be the initial step in terms of sex education for the youth of the country.

That should initially start at the school. These young ones on the video are well motivated – no doubt, but I dont think that the comments of these young moderators or volunteers on the the use of condoms would bring much in making youth of the country aware. Since the majority folks are buddhists, and rural folks, and shyness accompanies them after all when it goes for sex- there should be successful other methods in approach the youth. Just to do it to the manner that is being carried out on the west- cant help any youth in the country. Synergy of several methods could achieve a lot within shorter period of time – this has been the case for several Afro states.

Before you talk about condoms you need to teach the kids about sex. Of course they already know but then the finer details; what is the purpose, love, sex, the physiology, the phsychology, the institution of marraige, religous point of view (if you have one), std, hiv, sexual orientations etc. So it not just like they do on the discovery channel.

Ha-ha, well now, we call this the act of mating
    But there are several other
    Very important differences
    Between human beings and animals
    That you should know about

You and me baby ain’t nothin’ but mammals
So let’s do it like they do on the Discovery Channel
    Do it again now
You and me baby ain’t nothin’ but mammals
So let’s do it like they do on the Discovery Channel

Rotary and Rotaract should act in a more responsible manner before distributing condoms and advocating free sex.

Now that “Dinuka” has mentioned “Drugs”, hopefully these fresh faces from Cinnamon Gardens will do another Clip on how to “Buy the right stuff before going Night Clubbing”.

Also the same actors hopefully will explain ,what color, what size these tablets should be and whether to jab into the fore arm or the groin in case they pick them up n powder form.

How pathetic for you to relate “Drugs” to condoms.

Looks like these mislead Rotractors want to tell the world, in addition to the boy prostitutes we seem to be infamous for, now our
gals are getting into the act too. Is the sleazy Juliana Hotel (located at Galle Road close to Renuka Hotel) and run by the Mob running out of business?

We take pride in the fact this is a country with a long culture – and sex education and the like – necessary and a must today – but these are things done in private. Parents and close relatives advise grown up children of what should be and what should not be done. That is our way for a long time and it has worked well.

God forbid the day when the little girl goes to mum and asks what colour and size it should be as she is planning to spend the evening with some boy friends. How did KR Ravindran, the Gentleman Rotarian
Big Chief allow such nonsense to come into the open.

Obviously parents are not doing that job then, given the huge amount of abortions being carried out every day in SL. Don’t allow tradition to keep this country in the stone age. For you who seem to demand change in so many areas of SL life, you seem to be a dinosaur in the area of sex education. Sex and birth control is not something shameful that must be hidden away.

Haven’t there been instances where people/women have been arrested for carrying condoms? Or are males the only ones who can buy condoms?

I think religion and culture played a big roll when it comes to sex and marriage……..which I see as more of a submissive act when it comes to sex than real mutual pleasure. It’s like one man three minute show.

That’s the reason why men seeking prostitutes…..and prostitutes seek men who know only three minute barrier, piston engine enna penna job…….which they even carry to their family lives also.

They should be taught proper diets, exercise, foreplay, romance, intimacy, communication, affection, respectful behaviour specially towards their spouses or fiancee or even with their girl friends.

I hardly see a romantic couple or parents walking side by side holding hands in public. At least for now Sri Lanka is not Saudi Arabia……but our social attitude on romance, intimacy and affection in public(specially the men) towards female are nill.

They prefer to grind their bodies to women in a bus than to talk openly talk….or even say hello…….how are you….which is more respectable and giving honor to the ladies.

That’s why we have more sexual perverts in public and even in Parliament, simply because they are not been taught how to respect the opposite sex, how their psychology and physical bodies are connected and how to differentiate between a persons approvals, likes and dislikes and responses through body language, and how to attract them through five senses and respectful communication.

I am not telling that all the relationships should end up in marriage…..but the time one spend with each other should be more of romantic and love than a mere three minute sex job…..which I see among our youth…..AND THE RESPONSIBILITY AND BLAME LIES SOLELY ON OUR MEN WHO ARE LACKING IN THIS ROMANTIC DEPARTMENT.

I think these should be taught in class as a subject if Govt. plans to eradicate Violance against women and to tell the true story of love and affection, romance, psychology of genders, how to respect each other and marriage base on love than sex etc. Not the beastly animalistic enna penna type…..which is harmful to family life and society and could end up in prison also.

Infact there should be more parks, walkways, open seaside restaurants and music and dance centers for lovers to enjoy their youth romantic lives….and should have more valentines days.

It’s time to teach ethical love and effection in schools…..or by members of Rotaract club and others. Our youth are lacking in love, intimacy, romance and affection and relationship departments where they should be taught and physically trained, while ladies score high marks.

GREAT START ROTARACT CLUB…..GOOD START AND PLEASE KEEP IT UP AND GO TO THE NEXT LEVEL AND EXPAND TO OTHER COMMUNITIES SUCH AS SINHALA AND TAMIL AND ALSO GIVE YOUR CONCERN TO ABOVE POSITIVE COMMENTS AND IDEAS.

I ALSO PREFER IF YOU COULD PUBLISH A BOOKLET ON LOVE,ROMANCE, SEXUAL PHYSICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL KNOWLEDGE AND HEALTH.

    GOOD LUCK.

When I made my comments I did so as we are a different country and people from many parts of mainly Africa where, due to age-old cultural habits and customs, who exactly is the father of a child is often ambiguous. Polygamy is widely practised in Africa and the sacrosanctity by which marriage between man and woman is held and observed in the Indian Sub-Continent, is virtually unknown in Africa. I certainly concede there are exceptions there too. The chance and incidence of sexually-transmitted diseases, like AIDS, is not only high there but, in some countries, uncontrollable. The situation in our part of the world is markedly different. Even incidents of divorce, thankfully, are low here. Equally grateful am I we are many centuries away from being a sexually “permissive” society as in the developed countries. Our cultural practises and bonds are strong and relevant. While we must welcome the advances in modern medicine and science to benefit society we must resist these “fancy” features that are incorrectly viewed by our youth as stylish, “in” and, thefore, “cool” like what is described as recreational “drugs”
It is up to the elders to protect our youth from harmful influences
cloaked mistakenly as “modern and stylish”

Since the elders are not doing it, have never done it, and are never likely to do it, the youth need actual protection in the form of condoms.

Its said in the video that is campaign,s objective is to educate the youths on safe sex on during the month of love ( February). these modern looking boys and girls are preaching our youth community that this valentine month is for full of free sexx and tellng how they prevent unplanned pregancy .

this is exactly what is happening in the so called developed countries where there is NO respect for religious and cultural values, all sort of uncivilized acts like free sex with any consenting person etc are simply endorsed in the name of human love and freedom. These kinds of freedom of having sex with any consenting prty is nothing but similar to the action of animals, which can go with any one for sex etc.

But here in Sri Lanka, we are communities with our highly civilized social and cultural values which gives us guidelines about how we should conduct ourselves when it comes male and female relations ships and with what dignity we look at sex.

Therefore, we should educate our youths about these values and train them to how Descilplined they should be on his subject. They should be taught about the strict guide lines of what is permitted and what is prohibited in our society on the subject of sex. They should be taught of the seriousness of having any sort of illicit affairs with any one and what are social dangers of doing this. When we see how effectively valentines days are promoted , we can see how fast we are moving towards a FREE sex society like in the western country.

So, if we are genuinely concerned about our youths and communities , the one and only best thing we should do is to aggressively promote our values , social, cultural and religious guidelines on the male- female relationship.

this will ensure not only the safe sex but also civilized sex.

Population increase becomes a problem when natural resources and wealth are not equally distributed to the people so that everyone will be sufficiently fed. Islam discourages birth-control as God created mankind not to become extinct but to keep growing. Marxism too opposes birth-control as it is a ploy by the Capitalists to monopolise and keep control of natural resources and wealth so that they will not be compelled to distribute them to the needy. Now the Boda Bala Sena and the JHU keep crying and attack everyone they site saying that the Sinhala-Buddhist population is on the decrease. So will they not campaign against the free availability of condoms.

At least got something to hear about condoms in Sri Lanka thank you guys for your effort. Unwanted pregnancy is ia issue that we should consider but don’t forget mother Lanka under the threat of massive HIV tsunami. Government fails to educate genarel public about HIV before Flooding tourists in to the country, our people know nothing about Contagious disease such as Hepatitis C and B ,HIV.

Good step by Rotaract Club of Cinnamon Gardens!!
You get this many comments due to it being popular.
You may find it personally uneasy when reading the commnets but don’t worry children – Someone have to bite the bullet. You did it.

We can see you are taking effort to feature in the video. Next one shoot it outside in more free environment. Though I dont agree showing the brands and packs show a seen actually you purchasing it.

All talk about moral… etc 90% know who is inside you. So protect yourself from STDs at least thanks to these kids.
