Don’t Stand In The Doorway, President Sirisena

By Shyamon Jayasinghe

Shyamon Jayasinghe

Shyamon Jayasinghe

Come senators, congressmen please heed the call

Don’t stand in the doorway don’t block up the hall

For he that gets hurt will be he who has stalled

There’s a battle outside and it’s ragin’

It’ll soon shake your windows and rattle your walls

For the times they are a’ changin’!” – Bob Dylan

The quote is aimed at President Sirisena and the corrupt who have managed to pressurise him to make that disastrous speech castigating the FCID, Bribery Commission and other anti-corruption bodies set up as Independent Commissions under the key legislative expression of the ‘revolution of January 8th.’ Many are gathering ‘to stand in the doorway,’ and ‘block up the hall,’ as stated by Bob Dylan. (By the way, Bob has fetched the Nobel Prize for Literature this time.)

I am still wondering why President Maitripala Sirisena took that step. For one thing, it is senseless to flay the personnel in these institutions who are already feeling the heat of the powerful corrupt block who belonged to the previous regime when corruption was enthroned. That block is mostly outside-within the ranks of the so-called “JO.” However, there isn’t any denying that parts of that cabal are inside Sirisena’s fold and hiding within the National Unity Government, waiting to give a hand to the disgraced Royal Family if and when the need arises.gota-ranil-maithri

Why senseless? Because if His Excellency thinks these Commissions aren’t working right he has the legal right to summon them and brief them. He may not exactly have the power to give directions and God bless for that; but he does have the lawful privilege of talking to them. In turn, the latter have an ethical obligation to listen to the President. Letting out his critical barbs against them in public like this is something that doesn’t fit in the scheme of things as far as Yahapalanaya concept goes. If a school principal is not happy about the ways of his staff he does not go out to the media and attack the staff? Admit, this analogy may not be one to one but it is near enough to emphasise a substantive point.

Again, if any if these institutions take wrong decisions or if they are, as the President himself charges, acting according to political agendas well there is recourse possible in court for anyone aggrieved. The President should leave all this to the justice system and not illegally attempt to subvert that system.

Second, the speech of the President is also damaging to the image of these institutions and it is his responsibility to guard that image. No institution can sustain itself in any society when its public image is publicly sabotaged by anyone in authority like the President of the Democratic republic of Sri Lanka. The Opposition can pick up from the President and go to town in order to further destruct the institutions. President Maitripala Sirisena has given a massive boost to the Opposition campaign to undermine the working of the anti-corruption agencies. The JVP and its leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake has already made this point in a public statement.

Third, the speech is questionable with regard to factual content. Why does The President want to privilege anybody – Gotabaya or any of the former Forces Commanders? How does privileging fit in with the fundamental concept of law and order that is ingrained in yahapalanaya? If, only hypothetically and for the sake of argument, Gotabaya is guilty of the massive corruption charges levelled against him over the MiG deal how come we block action against that ? If, hypothetically again, Gotabaya Rajapaksa is implicated in the murders of Lasantha Wickrematunge, the Sunday Leader editor, and of Wasim Thajudeen the young ruggerite, how come we block investigations? One cannot privilege any person, however big that individual may be if one is serious about the enforcement of the law. That had been, in fact, how law and order simply went to the dogs under the previous regime.

The ordinary public had been enraged by the open violation of the justice system under the Rajapaksa regime. This was why the Revolution of January 8th happened in the first place. President Sirisena has evidently backflipped on that campaign that brought him into power. Isn’t this a severe let down?

Our only hope is that in making this speech the President is really playing a game. Even so, I think it is a bad game that will badly backfire and eventually consume and disgrace him. Instead of making such utterances president Sirisena should put his personal house in order by restraining his son, Daham, from his quixotic and controversial Night Club adventures. Is Maitripala feeling the heat from Daham Sirisena’s behaviour?

Whatever may be, the President should leave the administration of justice severely alone and attend to the work well within his own province. If he stands in the doorway, like in the Dylan lyric, he will be swept away by gathering storms who are already impatient with the slow progress of the investigations.

Yahapalanaya showing its true colors, thieves protecting thieves.

We did not elect Sirisena to act/behave like this. He is going down the same rotten, stinking, degenerative and repulsive lane just like his predecessors.

      The Miracle of Asia!
Only possible in Banana republic with jungle laws and kangaroo courts (influenced by politicians).

Sri Lanka is already screwed up with a criminal nation (with a criminal heritage) who worship killers, thugs, thieves, rapists…and calling themselves Pure Buddhist! This is the culture of the Sinhala-Buddhists of SinhaLe and they are proud of it.

How can anybody talk about ‘JUSTICE’ from the nation of criminals, criminal worshippers, defenders of criminals, and criminal lovers?

    Shyamon

The popular local adage says “Natapu thovilekuth naha bere paluwakuth naha”; I hope you understand. “Your naked emperor” has done nothing for average Sri Lankans. He appointed his family coterie to be the chief of Bribery Commission-where are the big rogues you were talking about supposed to have stolen billions of dollars, 2) Appointed Welimunna another cohort, to probe SRILANKAN and paid Rs.3.5 Million for a report of few pages, Emperors’ own management team threw the report away last week. Emperor sponsored a motion to reward politicians with Luxury vehicles (it cost rather it denied Rs.34-40Million tax revenue per car) From august to to-date over 70 Land Cruisers have been released and within minutes sold to unscrupulous business guys in the land by Emperor’s men. Emperor appointed Charitha’s brother to SRI LANKAN, now the fellow is planning to sell the services to foreigners. How about CB bond scam; what is the contribution by mahendran and co. to UNP coffers. The list goes on.
The rogues and criminals of the previous regime of MARA is free and operate at will.
So are you Shyamon suggests not to block the door and let your emperor and his team to scorch our economy under the guise of Good Governance. “Yahapalanaya”. Your emperor must wear some clothes first, then you will have some grounds.

      Village man AIYO SIRISENA,

People selected to you to receive Justice for innocent helpless men, women and children who got killed by the serial killer GOTA
People selected you to punish wrongdoers of the previous government for their wrong doings
People selected you to hear unheard helpless voices
People selected you to STOP or to minimize corruptions
People selected you to deliver peace between all races and religious group
People selected you to STOP giving KUDU to children
People selected you to promote fair with human value society.

NOW you are also trying to protect serial killers claiming them as war heroes? Clear the wrongdoers from the corruption claims? Do you also think by winning the war, they all have right to kill anyone who criticize or who against them? Also, they have right to rob ordinary peoples’ food money?

If you cannot protect your own ordinary Sinhalese, what are you talking about the other Tamils and Muslim minorities?

I wholeheartedly endorse what the writer says. President Sirisena has unmasked himself! He has given oxygen to the corrupt elements both within and outside the government.Civil society activists should lose no time launching a movement to bring about a new upsurge of public opinion against the rogues within the government and in the opposition which could eventually give rise to a new political force strong enough to erase the incorrigible UNP and the SLFP from the country’s political scene for good!

What the writer does not understand or pretends not to understand is that the government is desperately trying to take political revenge on its opponents by
using extra judicial measures to intimidate them so that Ranil and his cohorts are free to swindle the country as they have done in the Bonds case and several other instances of extreme corruption. Sirisena has realised that he is living on borrowed time and is trying to protect himself by this attempted veneer to
cover his govts misdeeds. Any fool(including the writer of the article) will soon realise that the govt will be swept out of office as soon as elections are held. Why do you think the govt is not holding elections even at local govt level??

    • 0
      0

Percy, Yours is so far fetched, one does not know whether to laugh or to cry!

Extra Judicial methods to intimidate persons? Who used them? MR or Ranil?
Percy, were you in the Rip Van Winkle world until now?

Ranil sure made some mistakes which he should never have, but could you compare them with the MR times?

Do you listen to his speeches off his own bat in various fora and compare them for substance with either MR, Dimu Jay, or President Sirisena?

Would you concede that if we are going to forge ahead, we need a Premier who can see the future, sees the horizon, and dares to go beyond it, because he knows what he is aiming for? Someone who can, and will, earn respect worldwide through his ability to forge economic and trade partnerships with everybody?

Or is it that you are very uncomfortable to see an aggressively competitive SL and wish to remain in a deep well, talking about nationalism, religious superiority, the culture (never mind who breaks it as long as you go to temple over a song and dance!), and of course the language.

Decide what you want. Perhaps to slip behind the Maldives and Bangladesh both?
If so, then there is no problem. You are definitely on the button!

I am definitely not a Ranil lackey, but facts are stubborn. There simply isnt anyone better.

This Shaymon must be a rich dude in the Diaspora which is based in Australia.

    Yahaplnaya is on the skids.

Even the Yahapalana Sinhala Buddhist Brigade, the JHU is pissed off about Yahapalana PM Batalanada Ranil, helping his mate Singapore Mahendran to give the SIL, not LKR 5 Billion as reported in the PT annual Report.

It is in fact over LKR 8 Billion in total, when one adds the spoils of the two Bond Issues.

JHU Boss Nishantha says the perpetrators should not only be punished but the LKR 8 Billion must be taken back.

Don’t know how he can do that..

In fact without naming names he accused the Yahapalana PM as the main perpetrator.

    How much is Srikotha worth..

And JHU Nishamtha said that not only the Colombo Intelligentsia ,but the whole Dalit inhabitant population are impatiently waiting to see what action will be taken about this biggest heist of the Mahavamsa History.

Wonder whether this uncle is a shareholder of PT to come and rubbish the Yahapalana President for finally coming out of his Yahapalana induced Coma, to tell inhabitants the truth.

Today’s papers tell us that an army man has hanged himself leaving a ‘suicide note,’ which admits he killed Lasantha Wicktrematunge-the Sunday Leader former editor who exposed Gota’s deals. This may well have been another murder by the Royal family of the former regime. Probably a fake to save Gota from implication. Murder the man and then hang him along with a suicide note. If an army man murdered LW who gave him orders to do that? Who was the Defence boss then? It is clear that Royal family people are working day and night to save their skins. Was Sirisena induced and trapped by them to make this stupid utterance. We want a Sri Lanka where the law is above every person. Let us make yahapalanaya a reality. That is the only way for the security and peace of Sri Lanka.

Sirisena’s son engaged in night club adventure and thuggery.
Sri Lanka needs a honest and sincere leader to lead the people to live in peace and harmony.

The educated and matured and honest people must come forward to lead the country like in Singapour.

Shyamon Jayasinghe is like Heenbaba Seeya of the currently popular Sinhala teledrama ‘SINDU’! You cry for the wrong creature’s death! And you even attend the funeral! Heenbaba Seeya’s lies sound like real truth but they are lies that only kids can enjoy!
In my opinion, Yahapalanaya has already died; it died a premature, untimely death, out of lack of oxygen and nutrients. Instead of breast feeding My3+Ranil duo and people like Shyamon Jayasinghe relied too much on foreign formula! After the infant’s death they blame at each other now!
I fully agree with Burampi Seeya’s statement “Natapu thovilekuth naha bere paluwakuth naha”. What has your emperor done to the average men, women and children in Sri Lanka? The answer is: ‘nothing much’. However, after President’s ‘notorious’ speech people who were hard hit by a severe drought in many parts of Sri Lanka have received few millimeters of rain!
Let me add another popular adage to this conversation: “Yana yaka korahath bindagena yanawa” (Departing devil breaks even the kitchen clay pot with his departure)”. Has My3 left anything behind in the Yahapalana kitchen after his speech?
Apparently My3 was mad at Ranil since he did not act honestly when Daham was in trouble; instead Ranil aggravated the situation by secretly employing Sirikotha staff to investigate it. It was that CCTV footage that went viral and most believe only a high-hand could get it when everything had been blocked by the President’s men. Please compare and contrast this with what Mahinda had done when a similar situation occurred in Pasikuda involving the same young fellow Daham. He (Mahinda) helped My3, since he knew these foolhardy kids were still not matured enough and for them fist-fights come always before negotiations. There is no question about Daham who ought to be disciplined badly, and My3’s real friends should help him do the uphill battle.
When Mahinda was in power he helped many people understand this ‘foolhardiness’ and ‘impatience’ within the nation’s youth in particular, and within the nation itself in general. Sri Lankans as a nation had been oppressed and suppressed mainly due to 450 year-long foreign occupation and its direct consequences such as the lengthy war, poverty, mental instability, stress, hopelessness, and dissatisfaction. This war was too long and that had been pressed directly upon them by others (mainly India). Mahinda, as president, had to act in a clumsily interesting but strategic manner when he dealt with certain people, certain ethnic groups, certain Western nations and neighbors (India and Pakistan), and many people misunderstood his plans and methodology. His promise to grant 13+ is a good case in point.
Only an experienced team of psychologists could understand the nature of this battered nation at the time and I personally believe Mahinda handled it ‘with care’. Many who write to CT will try to kill me for saying this but for many who have closely followed Sri Lankan affairs, the people, and their interesting history and culture will understand and agree with me. If Mahinda comes to power again we will find a man with a lot of experience and patience and now many in Sri Lanka believe only such a person can handle this impatient nation.

A North American friend of mine told me that Mahinda would go to history not only because he won the war but also because he successfully avoided a possible coup d’etat after the war that could have been the end of both India and Sri Lanka.
We don’t thank for hypotheses that did not materialize; but we know that ‘prevention is always better than cure’. And we Sri Lankans should thank Mahinda once again for having steered a war-weary and battered nation through troubles after troubles after troubles prior to, during and after the war! And Ranil should also be credited in this hypothesis for having pretended a fool of himself, and then really by fooling the former army commander to come to politics. Otherwise, no one knows what this five star General could have done with his ‘new-found popularity’ at the time and our red brothers: the JVP was supporting him with a lots of hope!
Mahinda did an extremely good job with the 21 million sleepy and lethargic crowd of people that is called the population of Sri Lanka. And remember he did it with them, and the majority of them always think they are the best but don’t do much to be the best except for expecting others to do everything other than the very basic day-to-day acts of eating, sleeping, breathing etc. After all that’s what lions do in the jungle! Luckily Mahinda had Gota and Basil behind him; both of them had American experience and had read Machiavelli’s ‘Prince’ before entering politics.
Today, Ranil and My3 are stuck because
    1) They don’t know how Sri Lankans work
    2) They don’t know how to make them work!
Unfortunately neither one has 2 brothers like Gota and Basil. They have only ‘potheguras’ and advisers and ministers who think they know everything but actually know nothing about their lethargic and sleepy nation. If My3 and Ranil are stuck, I would say their ministers and advisers are now drowned. Many foreign diplomats have observed this desperate situation, and in an apparent attempt to help diplomats the Oxford dictionary now has come up with a new entry: ‘AIYO’.

Sirisena should render a public apology for making such an irresponsible and unfair utterance. WE cannot forget he was groomed in Rajapaksa culture. How good the 19th Amendment was passed. Now President cannot dissolve Parliament as CBK did. But the UNP and Ranil will have to act wisely and shrewdly.

here’s a relevant news story: Pugoda Magistrate D. A. Ruwanpathirana today ordered authorities to auction the luxury villa and the 16 acre land in Malwana, which is allegedly owned by former Minister Basil Rajapaksa.

    Basil
    Basil
Delivering the verdict, the Magistrate ordered the house estimated to have been built at a cost of Rs. 240 million on a 16 acre land in Malwana in Gangabada Road, Malwana be auctioned. The Magistrate delivered the verdict following a case filed by the FCID.

Rajapaksa was also arrested in June in connection to the land, which is valued at Rs. 60 million.

Last week, Rajapaksa denied any ownership of the villa. Rajapaksa’s lawyer, President’s Counsel Jayantha Weerasinghe informed the Pugoda Magistrate last Friday that his client had absolutely no ownership over the house.

In September, the Colombo Telegraph reported how a very close associate of Rajapaksa betrayed him by dragging him in to yet another money laundering scandal. In a letter addressed to the Commissioner of Inland Revenue, Muditha Jayakody claimed that a large sum of money amounting to millions which was in his bank accounts was not his money and it belonged to someone else.”
Following President Sirisena’s line of reasoning the authorities should not pursue cases like this without informing him!! The freed judiciary must not be free!

“Following President Sirisena’s line of reasoning the authorities should not pursue cases like this without informing him!! The freed judiciary must not be free! “

“Shit is Shit”, different smells but it is repugnant and stinking and you would not touch it with 100ft pole. Whether it is the SHIT of Rajapaksa or Ranil. You have given the numbers.

Lets look at the day light robbery of Ranil’s cohorts and inner coterie: Two examples:
-Mahendran’s day light robbery is estimated over Rupees 4.0 Billion.

-Luxury vehicles for politicians and their sidekicks denied the tax payers, up to now for 70 Vehicles released: over Rupees 23.0 Billion

So my dear Shymon, Ranil’s pile of shit has already reached the sky. You should be able to get the stinking smell in Australia. The irony is for you Rajapaksa’s shit smells bad and vile but Ranil’s pile of shit is aromatic and very pleasant to you.

For ordinary citizens like us both piles of shit, small or big are stinking, smelly and unbearable. Remember “Two wrongs don’t make a right”. So you don’t attempt to portray any Mafia boss as a good guy, law abiding and a proponent of good governance.

Must congratulate the Colombo Telegraph for giving presence to courageous and incisive writers like Shyamon Jayasinghe and Tissaranee Gunasekera. The present analysis of Mr Jayasinghe is on the spot. I am one those who assisted the Civil Organisations to rid the country of a regime full of foul deeds, murder and pillage of the island’s wealth. A good number of these brutal deeds have now been revealed and former VIPs are in trouble. President Sirisena’s plea for favoured treatment for Gota against whom there are serious allegations of fraud and murder may be judged as being cowardly.
It is shocking to realise the hard truth that the worst of men and women in the island have become its ruling leaders. Where are the thinkers and the educated? Just a handful and they are silent. It is not difficult to see where this country is heading.

He now disowns it but fresh evidence is coming up that he was the real owner and that the money to the architect Jayakody was paid by Basil. This is the way the other members of the Rajjuru Pavula played out.
