Dramatic Political Changes: Muslims Consider It As Divine Intervention

By Latheef Farook

Latheef Farook

Disproving astrological predictions and dismissing fears of violence, the opposition presidential candidate Maithripala Sirisena who won the election was sworn in as the country’s sixth executive president by Supreme Court Justice K. Sripavan at 6 PM on Friday 9 January 2015 at a simple ceremony held at the independent square.

Such a dramatic political development was almost unimaginable even two months ago in view of the all powerful executive presidency, government’s two third majority in the parliament, ruthless political manipulations to remain in power , overall control over the island’s media and unleashing violence to silence the people. Added to this was the disarray in the weak opposition camp in putting forward a common presidential candidate.

However the entire political scene changed overnight when the then health minister and Sri Lanka Freedom Party General Secretary Maithripala Sirisena left the Rajapaksa government in the most unexpected political development and entered the election campaign as the opposition common presidential candidate.

Since then there erupted waves of support to Maithripala demonstrating the mood of the country taking defeated President Mahinda Rajapaksa by surprise.

This trend continued uninterrupted and Maithripala Sirisena won the presidential elections polling 6,217,162 votes (51.28 per cent) whereas the incumbent President Mahinda Rajapaksa secured 5,768,090 votes (47.58 per cent). Thus in this hard fought presidential elections Maithripala Sirisena won by a majority of 449,072 votes.

Maithripala Pic by Ruzaik FarookThere were unconfirmed reports that in defiance of people’s verdict, defeated President Mahinda Rajapaksa tried to annul the election, declare curfew and continue to remain in power. There were many reports that the former president planned to issue emergency regulations and stay in power and former Defense Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa played a key role in this move.

Reiterating these reports Ven Athuraliye Rathana Thera, one of the prime movers to remove former President Mahinda Rajapaksa from power, disclosed that there was a last minute attempt by former president and his family to remain in power with the support of the security forces.

Once these move failed, perhaps due to local and international factors, former president called the opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe and made arrangements to hand over power on an assurance that he and his family leave the country safe.

There were reports of former Defense Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa fleeing the country with his wife in an air force plane to Male on 9 January to Male after Singapore refused to allow a military aircraft to land there. Later former Minister Basil Rajapaksa and his wife left for United States on Sunday 11 January morning.

Now the question is how did this dramatic political development happen? However it has happened and even today many find it difficult to believe.

The island’s Muslim community voted for Maithripala Sirisena in view of the atrocities they were subjected to by Sinhala racist such as Bodu Bala Sena, Ravana Balaya and the like with state patronage.

Muslims were not against Rajapaksa government. There were lot of Muslims who supported the Rajapaksa government. However it was Rajapaksa government’s atrocities unleashed on them forced them to turn to Maithripala who advocated communal harmony in the hope the ongoing racist attacks on them will stop and a new era of peace will dawn.

For example Muslims were not party to the ethnic war between the Tamil militants and the government. However Muslims suffered a great deal during the three decades of ethnic war. In fact it was their fierce opposition to the LTTE call for the division of the country and steadfast support to successive governments to ensure the territorial integrity at great cost prevented the breakup of the country.

Thus after the war ended they were hoping a new era of peace would herald and their sufferings would end.

Instead, dashing all hopes and to the shock of all, they were subjected to immense sufferings with attacks on their religious, social, economic and cultural life and business establishments.

Muslims were helpless and voiceless with their politicians clinging on to the very government which was protecting hooligans attacking them. They suspected these attacks on them as a calculated conspiracy to crush and eliminate them as a community. From kidnapping of Muslim businessmen in white vans to the systematic attacks, burning and looting of their properties of Aluthgama, Dharga Town and Beruwala there were more than 350 attacks.

This short sighted disastrous policy reached such a stage that their very survival as a community was at stake with their lands being arbitrarily acquired and overall attacks continuing unabated. Such blatant racist atrocities were never known in their more than 1000 year history in the island.

However no perpetrator was taken into custody and the Muslims turned to divine intervention for safety and security with special prayers and the recital of kunooth (special prayer during times of difficulties). Men, women and children alike continued to recite kunooth dismissing calls from so called “moulavithumas” who sold their souls and hobnobbed with former president Mahinda Rajapaksa asking not to recite kunooth to please former president.

There was also growing fear among the Muslims with people like Udaya Gammanpila, known for his anti Muslim mindset, stating that an attack on Muslims this year to commemorate the centenary of 1915 Sinhala-Muslim riots is inevitable.

It was in this gloomy atmosphere came the presidential elections which provided an opportunity to express their anger and frustration by voting for the opposition presidential candidate Maithripala Sirisena who promised security for all communities.

“This is a miracle. Our prayers were answered and not only the Muslims even the country as a whole is saved from the destructive communal politics which threatened the very fabric of communal harmony badly needed in the country”. This was the general response of Muslims all over.

They pointed out that “there was no reason for the Rajapaksa government to commit such atrocities on them. It was sheer madness, perhaps to please his new Israeli friends who have supposed to have entered the island in a big way and were suspected of training and financing Sinhala racists to attack Muslims as part of their global anti Muslims agenda which virtually destroyed the Middle East. Rajapaksa government paid the price for his racist politics promoting Sinhalese in almost every possible field while openly dismissing the minorities as if they were not citizens of this country.

“We were helpless and there was no one to turn to other than seeking divine intervention to save us .Our prayers were answered today and we continue to pray and hope that there will be communal harmony and peace for the betterment of all in the country.

The Muslim ‘divine intervention’ is as foolish as the astrologer’s predictions.

“However the entire political scene changed overnight”.

Yes, you can gloat about Hakim, bathiurdeen and Nustafa’s bastadry on MR after enjoying life under him. Now Maaru Sir ahas given Colombo to “Hakim the untrustworthy”.

Don’t worry. The nation will reclaim all that was lost, just like the Crusaders reclaimed Jerusalem.

If it was divine intervention then all the attacks against Muslims was also divine intervention and all the wars where Muslims are on the losing end is also divine intervention.

Muslims always always always pull the religion card and try to justify their chauvinism and expansionist ideolgy with religion.

They only opposed the LTTE because the later was not Muslim. If LTTE was Muslim they would have supported them. Pakistan and Bangladesh are both Muslim countries but Muslims in India and Ceylon demand these non Muslims nations be for everyone

Muslims support separatism and hegemony for Muslims but not for others. They want to expand and emigrate to non Muslim countries but do not allow non Muslims into Muslim countries and actively genocide non Muslim minorities in Muslim majority countries , eg: Egypt, Iraq, Syria,Pakistan.

Very glad fellow Sri Lankan Muslims feel re-assured about our common future. Divine intervention or not.

However, Farook’s brand of religious explanations such as “divine intervention” etc. is un-settling.

As much as the “intervention” is welcome, funny how it is never implemented in large parts of the Islamic world in endless turmoil, poverty & untold desperation. No “intervention” ever seem to be implemented either by ruling piety or divine forces in those countries.

      Cheers!

PS: Dear Latheef Farook, Can you furnish any scientific proof to your claim of a “divine intervention”?

“However, Farook’s brand of religious explanations such as “divine intervention” etc. is un-settling.”

It is racist supremacy. It denigrates and insults non Muslim peoples. Not surprising since Islam itself denigrates and demonizes the Kuffar/non Muslims.

What is surprising is such a comment coming from a person who no doubt fancies himself as educated and tolerant.Just goes to show that even educated Muslims hold onto supremacist ideals. Recent news and polls in the Muslim world on Muslim attitudes towards religion just prove on how intolerant Islam is.

The caption pictures above shows some people wearing caps to determine their Islamic faith but sadly these pictures show some people supplicating in front of a grave. This act has nothing to do with Islam and its Monotheistic Creed. Seeking help from the dead is Shirk which negate the Islam and who ever who visit a grave, a soothsayer, or practice magic, will be automatically go out of the fold of Islam. The true Muslim does not practice these kind of rituals which will take them out of the fold of Islam.

      3

Then Allah has much more to do….Allah should start with ISIL, and other extremist groups, who are insulting the religion, and killing fellow Muslims by the hundreds. They are disgracing the religion, and doing the work of the Islamaphobes. They are also causing major problems for innocent Muslims by turning the rest of the world against them.

        4

The ISIL is only Allah’s tool to punish the hypocrites, namely the so-called upholders of the Faith, sitting in Saudi Arabia then their supporters, then their directors sitting in Tel Aviv and Washington. These are all Abraham’s descendants who have perverted Allah’s guidance to humanity. Just as much as the Sun will rise tomorrow from the East I swear to you, the destruction of the Munafiqeen will take place. When ? Only Allah knows.

Of course ISIL will also be destroyed in the process. They are the worst. Be sure.

If the Pharoah could be drowned in the Red Sea, destroying these vermin is a cake walk.

Allah is Omnipotent. He never fails.

        • 2
          2

But isn’t Allah merciful? Why then are innocent people being killed in the process? Innocent children, women, and men, are being killed by ISIL, because of the arrogant Saudis? That somehow does not sound like compassion or protection of innocents to me. ISIL is a dangerous entity, that kills fellow Muslims without hesitation, that sounds more like the Devil’s work.

Allaah The Almighty is Not Unmindful of what His servants are doing. Every action is recorded because He The Creator Has given every soul He is Creating throughout and continue to Create with distinct finger print and eye iris which will never be duplicated. He is The Originator of all Creations that is why we humans have no control over our affairs as all control is in His Hand. If we human have control over our body then we could have remained young forever and never have to visit doctors for our sickness and we could live for ever without dying, but the does not happens, Because He is Above All things in Control. Therefore, do not fool around with your limited knowledge, as the Knowledge of the Unseen is with Its Creator The Almighty Allaah The Owner of the Worlds and all things Created for us humans, animals, birds, and living things.

If ISIS/ISIL/Daesh are Allah’s tool against the hypocrites then why is ISIS wasting time raping and killing innocent Kurds ,Christians and Muslims in Iraq and Syria? Why not go straight for the Al Sauds.

        2

Allaah The Creator of the Humans and other beings is misunderstood by many. Those who do not know Who is Allaah should honestly seek the truth for their benefit. Sadly ISIS, Al Qaeda, and all other Jehadist who commit wrong doings under the garb, banner of Islam, are not at all welcomed by genuine Muslims and the Great Imams of Islam have vehemently condemned these terrorist and their activities as totally un-Islamic therefore please do not put all eggs in one basket. Killings, bombing, suicide are all part and parcels of the policy of Khawarijs, Mu’tazilites, Raafidees etc who are donning Muslim attire to hoodwink the people, but the people should not fall prey to these uncivilized barbarians. Of Course Islam has been understood fully by many who condones these terrorists and their barbaric acts.

A rather silly and nonsensical response, because it makes not sense. I have yet to see a squirrel “stand strong” then collapse.

Now they may collapse while in the act of running away from a predator but running isn’t “standing strong”.

It’s odd how non Muslim nations are the most powerfull in the world.Must mean there is no Allah or that Allah favors non Muslims.

Israel stands tall at the expense of the US, who aids it and arms it, and at the expense of occupied people, whose lands and other resources are stolen, by Israel (despite world condemnation). Without the support of the US, Israel would have collapse long time ago. Nothing to be proud of really.

Just to clarify, I am not supportive of how Israel treats the Palestinians. I brought up the case of Israel to highlight the arrogant folly of Muslims to claim any beneficial act as that gifted by Allah.

So if Allah exists and is all powerful why then has he allowed Israel to survive despite repeated attempts by Muslim nations to destroy it.

      Mazahir,

“Allah punishes those who want to destroy Islam”

That is a pretty big claim. What is your claim exactly based on?

Hope it is not just blind faith or a vague feeling.

    Mr Latheef Farook

Thank you for the well presented thoughts.

I think it is counter-productive to the cause of improving the lot of the Muslims of Sri Lanka to encourage Muslim politicians – they are in the main politicians with Muslim names – using the Muslim community to collect financial benefit for themselves.

I could not imagine that Maithripala Sirisena could be so illiterate as to be unable to read the thinking of the Muslim Community, and award two Ministries to Rauf Hakeem and Faizer Mustafa – two Munafiqeen, who will not think twice before jettisoning the country and the community if that is of benefit to them.

If Maithripala Sirisena is wise enough he will pronto appoint an independent voluntary body of honest and incere individuals, intellectuals and experienced administrators, who are not necessarily Muslims, which may investigate the needs of the Muslim Community, including receiving suggestions from Muslims, and recommend to the Government what steps should be taken. This will be hugely beneficial: 1. Muslims will feel they have a place to go for genuine redress, 2 racial politics will be curtailed, 3 mercenary politicians will be cut off from taking advantage of others weakness.

A misguided Aman Faris wrote an Article “Why Hakeem Should Switch Sides” in Colombo Telegraph of 12 Dec exhorting Rauf Hakeem to leave the Rajapaksa Government and join the Common Candidate. https://www.colombotelegraph.com/index.php/why-hakeem-should-switch-sides/

I disagreed and pointed out that it was not in the interests of the Muslim Community to foster racial/religious politics and that Muslims should take the lead in directing the country away from racial religious politics. My comment to Aman Faris’ Article, relevant today even after the change of Government was:

After Alutgama, Muslims – 99% of them – know that they have to vote for Maithri in order to get rid of Mara. So be assured Muslims will vote en bloc for Maithri on Jan 8th. Muslims do not believe anymore in politicians with Muslim names.

Most of them know from personal contact with those politicians that they are prostitutes in politics for the money and perks. They are political prostitutes. Only an intellectually bankrupt Sinhala politician will invest in a politician with a Muslim name.

Muslims themselves have realized that the Sri Lankan population structure is such that being owned by a “muslim” political party will only bring them grief. Break free. Muslims should not allow themselves to be owned by non Muslim parties too. Wait till they come to you. This is the strategic path and more beneficial to you.

Have faith in Allah. Remember Aluthgama: when we were desperate we raised our hands to Him in supplication. And He sent us help in the form of the humanly unimaginable Common Alliance to start living in dignity once more.

Mr Rauf Hakeem, you have still not asked forgiveness from the Almighty for aiding the religio monsters Mahinda Rajapakse, Gotabaya Rajapakse and Bebadu Nanasara – who have turned the art of money making out of religio communal politics into a fine art.

If it is not too much to ask, please do the Muslims of Sri Lanka a favour by remaining with them (the Rajapaksa monsters, that is). The Almighty may recognize this favour and reduce by a few degrees the heat of the Hell Fire that is your destiny.

Sri Lankan Muslims must remember: NEVER SUPPORT POLITICIANS WITH MUSLIM NAMES WHO CLAIM EXCLUSIVELY TO REPRESENT MUSLIM INTERESTS. Be a beacon of light to the other communities too, to be weaned away from religio communal politics. This is the right path

Rajapaksa was stupid enough to allow the terror group BBS attack Muslims, following the Myanmar plan. hoping that he can win the elections by rallying the Sinhala Buddhist around, while pretending Buddhism was under threat. He did not expect it to backfire like that. He did not expect the opposition to unite so strongly, and that someone called the common candidate would easily defeat the incumbent President. This is not divine intervention, but a huge mistake by an arrogant man, who thought that this time too, he can win by cunning. Sri Lanka is better today because the scoundrels are out of power, unable to cause more damage.

Time to rope in Gandassara of the BBS ALONG WITH DILANTHA and de-robe him, charge them in court and jail them, DO NOT LET EM FLEE the country. I am told Gandaya left to New Zealand on the 9th of January. IF so I hope an Interpol warrant is issued via the Police to get his ass down to face the muziq… Aba saranai gandayo. the video which instigated teh Aluthgama Inferno is enough evidence.

A good analysis Latheef. I second that.

There are many mysterious and unexpected ways that we get divine help. VP and his LTTE band was destroyed after what he did to innocent Muslims attacking them in Masjids while they were in prayer. Likewise we tend to believe MR too received that same fate, but to a lesser degree. Muslims all over the world place immense faith and trust in their Lord Almighty Allah and accept Him to be their Creator and all people of all nations and tribes to be His creation. They are prepared to make personal sacrifices and die for that, knowing that it will not go in vain. He expects us to accept Him as the best of planners and eventually in His own time and His own way will manifest His plan. This is more clearly understood in the popular idiom ‘Man proposes, God disposes’. In some ways, our new President too shows some of those God respecting qualities in him, when he says a verse of the Dhammapada before undertaking a momentous task. We Muslims do it all the time with the words ‘In the name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful’. We Muslims have been warned to stay away from soothsayers, as they are human like the rest of us, and there is nothing written in the stars for us. What we face are the benefits of what we do when it is good, or face the repercussions in this world and the hereafter for the wrong that we do. In between is the door of forgiveness open for us if we are sincere in our mistakes and regrets, which could mitigate any calamity that could befall the wrong doers. Soothsayers sometimes get it right, most times get it wrong when the options available are a 50/50 chance. MR put his trust on the soothsayers and paid the price.

Usual rubbish. When things go well they say it is Allah’s work. When things go badly they ignore it.

Multiply this scene by ten thousand, in this month alone, all over the world, where was the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful when he was really needed?

This writer like the vast majority of Lankan Muslims do not look like Arabs but they support and push an Arab racist ideology even though Arabs treat people like this writer like dirt.

That Indian jihadi who went to fight with ISIS was made to clean toilets because that how Arabs see SubContinent folks, as nothing but inferior beings fit to do only menial chores.

The lighter skinned Muslims in South Asia like many north Indian Muslims and Pakistanis still practice caste and consider South Indian,Sri Lankan and Bangladeshi Muslims as inferior races just like their upper caste Hindu counterparts. The genocide of Bengali Muslims by the Pakistanis was in great part motivated by racial hate. Yet these dark skinned Muslims think there exists an Ummah.

    • 3
      2

It is not for us Muslims to decide to whom we should show our allegiance but to God Almighty. There is no such thing as cast or rascism amongst Muslims living all over the world. But there are various interpretations on the principal codes like what is said and what is translated in the Holy Quran and what was enunciated by the Prophet in his teachings and examples taken from his personal life. Other than that, all Muslims believe that there is only one God – Allah, and Prophet Muhammed (May peace and blessings be upon him) was His last and final messenger. In the Prophet’s last sermon on Mount Arafat, he clearly mentioned (alongside many other things) that no Arab is superior to a non-Arab nor a non-Arab superior to an Arab, no white skin is superior to a dark or brown skin. All are brothers and none are superior nor inferior to each other. All are equal in God’s eyes except those who are closer to Him in piety and righteousness. So if someone does something wrong, it is nothing but right to expose them, and this is what this writer has done. What you refer to in ISIS land and cleaning toilets is irrelevant as this has nothing to do with being Muslim and the unadulterated teachings of Islam. Got the message?

      • 3
        0

You are either deluding yourself or are deliberately trying to lie about reality to maintain this faux concept of an Ummah.

There is a caste system amongst Muslims of the SubContinent. The fair skinned Caucasian looking ones who claim descent from Afghans,Persians , Turko-Mongols and Aryan high caste Hindus discriminate against the Muslim masses who are low caste converts.

Arabs are very racist against Indians,Pakistanis,Bengalis and Sri Lankans. Pakistanis are racist against the Mujahirs and Bangladeshi Muslims because the later are dark skinned and their features aren’t sharp like Pashtuns,Kashmiris and upper caste Sindhis and Punjabis.

Keep telling yourself there is no racism and discrimination amongst Muslims, because you are just trying to convince yourself.

Even here in the West, Pakistani and Arab run Masjids discriminate against Black Muslims.

    Mr Latheef Farook

That picture inserted amid your Article : To me that thing those worthies, including the President, are facing seem to be the bones of a dead man placed in a container and covered with a green and red cloth. Except the President and the Minister the others have their hands raised in supplication to the dead man, apparently asking for his favours.

If that is the case don’t these people know they have chosen the shortest and most effective path to eternal hell. I say eternal because Allah forgives if asked with genuine repentance every type of sin except associating partners with him. Each one of us has to earn our way to heaven by following the guidance given by Him. Holy men can convey Allah’s – guidance, but they cannot and will not intercede with Him on our behalf in matters concerning this life or life in the hereafter.

    Mr Farook, any thoughts?

Allaah The Creator of All does not distinguish between Muslims or Non- Muslims as all are His Creations and favor all equally according to His Divine Wills. Allaah only expect that the Human beings live with piety, righteousness and truth. Allaah also will dispense justice as all actions whether minor or major, whether good or evil, all will be recorded and justice will be divinely dispersed no question about it. God Almighty Allaah will judge and reward justly. Who ever who does an atom weight of good shall get the reward and an atom weight of evil shall get its reward punishment or forgiveness as He is the Most Forgiving. God Almighty Allaah Has revealed in His book and that here is no compulsion in religion. The Right Way stands clearly distinguished from the wrong. Hence he who rejects the evil ones and believe in Allah has indeed taken hold of the firm, unbreakable handle. And Allah (Whom he has held for support) is All-Hearing, Al—Knowing.} (Al-Baqara 2:256)therefore let us strive for the truth and act accordingly or perish. God Almighty is not in need of us but we need His Mercy at every second of our lives.

In my opinion this type of topic should not be posted on a public forum, lets keep our religious opinions to ourselves. This will only give an opportunity for everyone and all sorts of people to criticize what over a billion people believe in this world.

In all fairness to everyone it is not wise to take credit publicly. This only creates opportunity for elements to discredit ones believes. Buddhist,Christian, Hindu,Muslim and atheist each will have his/her own opinion. In Reality its is majority vote of all these people which gave victory to MY3. Lets leave it that.

I have my own opinion like every one else but I am not going to put it out in public. It’s my private opinion.

As much as possible I would say dont bring God in to public forum as you are asking people to express their opinion good or bad. Why be a party giving opportunity to criticize God ! So pls don’t write such articles in future in this forum Mr. L. Farook. this is my opinion.
