Ultra nationalist group Bodu Bala Sena in a special statement claims All Ceylon Jammiyathul Ulama (ACJU) used Al-Taqqiya to mislead the Parliament yesterday during testimony before the Parliamentary Select Committee probing Easter attacks.

Taqqiya is a precautionary measure in Islam to dissimulate or deny Islamic religious belief and practise if faced with persecution.
Referring to a statement made by ACJU President Rizwe Mufti before the PSC yesterday, BBS alleges Mufti said it was activities led by BBS that led to innocent Muslim youth joining ISIS extremism.
“We look at such statements with sympathy and kindness because it is the Ulamas who aided the dissemination of Wahhabism in this country,” BBS says.
They point to the fact that while BBS was established in 2012, Chief Moulavi of Kattankudy mosque stated before the PSC that terrorist Zaharan was a proponent of radical and religious extremism even before 2012.
BBS in their statement goes on to challenge Ulamas to come to a public debate regarding the allegations and claims they are making. BBS also urges the ACJU to stop spreading ‘hateful lies’ unless they wish for the ‘naked truth about Ulamas and Al-Taqqiya to be made public’.
However, Mufti in his statement before the PSC yesterday refers to anti-Muslim violence as a factor that contributed to Muslim youth looking to identify with terrorist outfits such as the ISIS.
He notes that ISIS sympathy in Sri lanka grew only following anti-Muslim campaigns and specifically refers to the anti-Halal claims.
Mufti also noted that even Muslim intellectuals were under threat by Zaharan. He had handed in two videos to former Defense Secretary Hemasiri Fernando on January 3, 2019 which contains preachings by Zaharan where he says he is against Muslim intellectuals as they are not supporting his cause.

GandaSara is back at his old game of distorting the facts and creating much maligned conspiracy theories to justify his attacks. The real reason behind all his hate and anger towards ACJU is because they are a body representing the entire Muslim community, and they never stoop so low as to respond to any of his calls to sit and discuss issues together, since that would only give him legitimacy and recognition. ACJU consists of intellectuals on Islamic faith, and sitting to discuss issues with this joker will only diminish their respect and esteem they have earned from their fellow community members. This monks past behavior and statements only proves he is out to ridicule and make mockery of the Islamic faith, and thus any sensible person will avoid him like the plague. But this incensed Monk praises Sufi Muslims and suggests giving them a media outlet on radio to propagate their Sufi mysticism. It could be they have given him recognition and thus have succumbed to his manipulations. They may also be his chief advisor on Muslim affairs. It is apparent he is trying to divide and drive a wedge to split the Muslim community along sect lines. But as Muslims, we believe there is a better planner in our Creator, whose plans will ultimately rule over all of mankind’s fallible plans.

Al-Taqiya – the Islamic art of lying and deceiving non-Muslims in the cause of Islam – is an age-old Islamic practice, used since the days of Prophet Muhammad. Despite being widely discussed Muslims continue to practice Taqiya even in explaining what Taqiya is. Here’s a sample of Islamic texts (Quran, Hadith and Sharia Law) that will make the concept of Al-Taqiya in Islam crystal clear once more:
Al-Taqiya in the Quran
1) Qurqn 2:225 permits taking false oath: “Allah does not impose blame upon you for what is unintentional in your oaths, but He imposes blame upon you for what your hearts have earned. And Allah is Forgiving and Forbearing.”
2) Quran 3:28 permits pretending friendship with infidels: “Let not believers take disbelievers as allies rather than believers. And whoever [of you] does that has nothing with Allah, except when taking precaution against them in prudence. And Allah warns you of Himself, and to Allah is the [final] destination.”
3) Quran 9:3 permits oath-breaking under favorable situation: “And an announcement from Allah and His Messenger, to the people (assembled) on the day of the Great Pilgrimage,- that Allah and His Messenger dissolve (treaty) obligations with the Pagans…”
Also verse 66:2: “Allah has already ordained for you, (O men), the dissolution of your oaths (in some cases): and Allah is your Protector, and He is Full of Knowledge and Wisdom.”
4) Quran 16:106 permits Muslims to lie about their faith (pretend to be non-Muslim) under difficult situation: “Any one who, after accepting faith in Allah, utters Unbelief,- except under compulsion, his heart remaining firm in Faith – but such as open their breast to Unbelief, on them is Wrath from Allah, and theirs will be a dreadful Penalty.” (also see 40:28)

Bruce Feiler writes of ancient history that “Jews and Christians who smugly console themselves that Islam is the only violent religion are willfully ignoring their past. Nowhere is the struggle between faith and violence described more vividly, and with more stomach-turning details of ruthlessness, than in the Hebrew Bible”.[8] Similarly, Burggraeve and Vervenne describe the Old Testament as full of violence and evidence of both a violent society and a violent god. They write that, “[i]n numerous Old Testament texts the power and glory of Israel’s God is described in the language of violence.” They assert that more than one thousand passages refer to YHWH as acting violently or supporting the violence of humans and that more than one hundred passages involve divine commands to kill humans.[9]”

What he says is true but Muslims should keep in mind that they are a minority in Sri Lanka scattered all over the country. If Muslim extremists keep on provoking Native Sinhalayo, the compassion shown by Sinhala Buddhists so far will cease to exist. In such a situation, Muslims will have no place to go. No country in the world will accept Sri Lankan Muslims who are the descendants of Demala Muslims. Because Muslim countries refused to accept refugees from several countries, Sri Lanka had to accept them. That demonstrates the compassion of Muslims towards their fellow Muslims.

Vijitha sounds like one of these paid anti Muslim trolls you find in many websites in the UK and US, where they have the same talking points, which if you start taking notice, have the same anti Muslim accusations, phrases, and the stupid efforts to tar all Muslims with the same brush. You will see the Quranic verses that are inaccurate, and twisted, you will see attacks on the Muslim Prophet Muhammed, and the consistent reference to Islam being an evil religion. Keep in mind these trolls are no Islamic scholars, nor religious scholars, just jobless not so bright people, making a quick buck spewing anti Muslim propaganda, spreading hate, disinformation, and setting one against the other. It’s good that CT provides an open forum to raise issues relating to religion at this moment in our history when it is being addressed openly. Religion is a very sensitive subject as it touches the most sublime in us – our spirit, our souls our very being. I think it’s conducive to the current societal situation we face.
Why do we try to either patronise or justify violence referring to past historical facts of violence by any leader- religious or otherwise? Why don’t we learn from the past mistakes and at least move forward in our effort to evolve into better human beings using whatever spiritual and or religious beliefs we hold? As human beings we spend so much energy and resources to better our physical being and environment. Why don’t we make an effort to use the good that these religions teach through their philosophies, thinking and writings to evolve into more refined human beings? This is a very appropriate time to do so let’s not lose the opportunity. Most Sri Lankans must feel frustrated and painfully hurt at this sporadic but continuous cycle of violence we go through.

What must happen though is that they must harness whatever spiritual and religious resources available to them, first, to bring solace and peace to the people they come in contact with. They must communicate with and join each other in common forums and discussions to clear doubts about religious beliefs or interpretations of teachings that have negative implications and are not conducive to human development. After all, if it means enough different things for different people, it really comes down to not meaning anything real in an absolute sense. Also, as you will see, the use of this term is almost exclusively negative or with implied negative connotations. Hence, you will hardly hear anyone proudly referring to himself as a Wahhabi or a Masjid named Masjid al-Wahhabi. It simply doesn’t occur. Let’s start with the definition of Wahhabis from the Encyclopedia Britannica. After you finish reading the definition, ask yourself, “So how they are different from what Muslims should be?”
. There is no doubt that the term Wahhabi has its historical derivation from the Sh. Muhammad Ibn Abdul-Wahhab. While his father’s name has formed one of the most defamatory labels in history, Abdul-Wahhab himself actually was not too excited about his son’s mission either. So, in some ways, the word itself is technically inaccurate. A more accurate label would be Muhammadis, and we all know why that wouldn’t work as a pejorative term. Doesn’t that say something about the term’s negativity?

There could be nothing further from truth. Historically, there is no doubt that the Shaykh’s mission was simply to revive lost practices of Sunnah and to remove polytheism. Whether one agrees with his style is a different issue. Since this article is not a discussion about the Shaykh’s life, I am going to just mention two important legacies that Sh. Muhammad left, and leave it to the reader to read further, if interested. The legacies: (a) Were it not for the Shaykh, tombs and structures upon graves would be widespread in the current Saudi Arabia. Consequently, grave-worship, yearly celebrations at these tombs would probably be as widespread (as they are in Indo-Pak, Iran, Egypt and other Muslim countries) (b) There would likely be still 4 congregations (one for each madhab) for each Salah at the Harram in Makkah! For further reading, see this article on his biography, misunderstandings about him, in non-Arabic sources, and articles by the Shaykh. An absolute must-read is a book by Natana DeLong-Bas, called “Wahhabi Islam: From Revival and Reform to Global Jihad”, excerpts here, and buy it here. In fact, why not read some of the Sheikh’s books and ask yourself if you really disagree with what he said. Get past the propaganda and go to the source yourself. Having said that, Sh. Muhammad’s real influence was largely limited to the Arabian Peninsula, but his revivalism of Tawhid did extend beyond the borders of the Arab world.
Speaking of Sh. Muhammad’s revivalism, the point is that it was exactly that—revival of what was already established in the religion. There was nothing new that he brought, nothing that wasn’t found in the works of previous scholars. In fact, many Orientalists and detractors of the Shaykh claim that he was mostly influenced by Ibn Taymiyyah. Well, if so, then why don’t we just call everyone Taymiyyans? Let’s take another example. Suppose this humble servant of Allah, me i.e. Amad, goes to Pakistan and somehow causes a revival of major proportions (of course highly improbable and nearly impossible), and rids Pakistan of the disease of innovations and polytheism. Would it be then that every person who observes the Aqeedah of the Salaf after me, whether directly affected by me or not, should then be called Amadis? How absurd is that?
