Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s Viyathmaga front-liner and retired Major General Kamal Gunaratne has trashed Army Commander Mahesh Senanayake and the Sri Lanka Police.

“This group [referring to the National Thawheed Jamath] was training and preparing for the attacks but our Army Commander says ‘we didn’t know’ and ‘we were not told’,” Gunaratne says implying it is the most preposterous comment that can be made by an Army Commander.
He says the Army Commander is an official who has access to the richest intelligence sources of the country.
“There are over 3500 officers and soldiers in intelligence units reporting to the Army Commander…Surely we didn’t fight the war for 30 years while waiting for information from a police officer?’”
He went on to trash the Army Commander, criticizing his lack of action to prevent the Easter Sunday attacks.
“We don’t need an army commander who waits for cues from someone else on impending attacks…If that was the case, we don’t need to appoint a General to that position,” he added.

Kamal didn’t run away from Mankulam Army Camp. SLA was surrounded. Kamal was ordered to withdraw. SLA made a brave fight for Mankulam. Anyway, Kamal got his revenge in 2009. He has written a great book, called “Road to Nandikadal.” They should make it required reading at all public schools. I believe what Kamal Guneratne says here is true. Present Army Commander appears to be poor in situation analysis and judgement. This was visible even with his statements to the parliamentary select committee. His initial claim of Bathudeen calling him to seek release of a terrorist suspect was changed to mere call to find out whereabouts of a suspect; probably under pressure from Prime Minister while giving evidence at the parliamentary select committee. We need a visionary commander like FM Sarath Fonseka heading the Army at a time like this.

I agree. I think that the statement he made to the press during the height of the crisis was like throwing oil to a burning fire and therefore, he should have been fired immediately. This kind of poor judgement is the result of lack of integrity. No country can afford to have military leaders with such low level of judgement. Same thing applies to the ex CDS Ravi. “Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera has said that Gunaratne’s book published a day after he retired from the army last year provided “evidence” of war crimes committed by Sri Lankan forces while battling separatist Tamil Tigers.
The 741-page “Road to Nandikadal” was a catalogue of atrocities committed by government forces since the early 1980s, Samaraweera had said. Setting fire to homes of Tamil civilians, killing innocent civilians and plundering valuables from homes under the guise of cordon-and-search operations have been listed by Gunaratne in minute detail.
The minister said the language used by Gunaratne also indicated that he derived pleasure from seeing the death and destruction around him, and in his own words he had admitted that as an officer, he did nothing to discipline soldiers under his command.
Gunaratne’s original army unit, the Rajarata Rifles, was disbanded for indiscipline and excesses, but Gunaratne himself escapes punishment according to his book and the unit emerges as the “mighty Gajaba Regiment.”
