Easter Sunday Bombing: Questions To Minister Of Defence, Law & Order Of Sri Lanka

By Arun Kumaresan

Arun Kumaresan – Air Vice Marshal (Ret’d)

Cost of manipulating Higher Defense Management – National Security Council

It was a sad and horrific day for all humans not only Sri Lankans nor Christians. Tentacles of religious fundamentalism and extremism have consumed many innocent lives on the day they were celebrating the resurrection of Christ. But as the reports indicate there had been a pre warning; not general but specific to violent acts targeting the Christians.

Mr. President: You have been pre occupied in your attempt to seek a second term; in such course you have increasingly taken all aspects of higher management defense & security into your hands. Before coming into this specific incident; there are questions that are related to your conduct as the Minister of Defense relating to higher defense management.

Mr. President: You are aware that the higher defense management of the Nation is tasked with the National Security Council. It comprises, in addition to you, the Prime Minister, Ministers of the subject of Finance, Law & Order and Foreign Affairs, Secretaries to the subject of Defense, Finance, Law & Order & Foreign affairs, Service Chiefs and the IGP. When required, Heads of Intelligence Services are called in for specific briefings to take stock of threats to National Security. This is the way matters relating to higher defense management are conducted and courses of action formulated in any Democratic Nation. However, in contrast on your specific instructions, many a times such meetings have been conducted in the absence of the PM & other UNP Ministers from 2015. In addition, instructions have also been given to the participants who have been cleared by you to attend such meetings, to keep the time and venue secret, to shield it from the PM & other UNP Ministers.

Mr. President: Question 1 – In your pre-occupation of your secret agenda to consolidate power, did you violate the ‘Norm & Form’ of the conduct of the higher defense management by intentionally omitting legitimate members in such high value discussions?

Mr. President: I wish to remind you, that after you intentionally violated the Constitution and appointed Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa as Prime Minister, you took over the subject of Law & Order under Ministry of Defense. Even after the defeat of the political coup initiated by you, you continued to hold this portfolio under your purview. Hence, the entire security apparatus of the Nation was under your total command and control. It is now a public knowledge that there was a pre-warning by the Intelligent Services that attacks were being planned by a religious fundamentalist group targeting Christians especially during Easter.

In this context, the statement by the Hon. Prime Minister has great relevance – Quote “Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe had noted that although intelligence units had provided information on a possible attack, adequate precautions were not taken to prevent it. He has further added that he and the ministers were not informed of this as well.” This substantiates that such serious matters affecting national security have again been kept away from the Prime Minister who is a legitimate member of the National Security Council and reinforces the earlier assertion of the conduct of illegitimate National Security Council meetings under your stewardship.

Mr. President, the above sounds very serious; you may have no sense and fear to trespass Constitutional boundaries; but now your acts disturbing higher defense management structures has resulted in Loss of lives, bloodshed and mayhem. It only reflects your foolish arrogance, self centered decision making and utter incompetency of governing the Nation.

Mr. President: Question 2 – Aren’t you culpable of the offence of ‘Manslaughter’ due to your intentional actions to marginalize the National Security Council and not acting on the credible intelligence that was in hand to prevent this catastrophe?

Mr. President, you have the right to visit Thirupathi in India. For a person “doing the right” to his fellow countrymen, the God will visit him or her. A person not doing the right to his people, will not and should not be tolerated by anyone leave alone the God. You by your in-actions mis and selfish actions coupled with petty thinking have aided and abetted this “manslaughter”.

Note to Readers

The main issue Mr President discusses at these illegitimate National Security Council meetings sans UNP members; was to check what UNP government is up to. For him it was National Security.

The ”yahapalanaya” Govt has failed to deliver.

Sri lanka should have stronger unified intelligence systems in place.

There should be no room for extremism, and terrorism.
Extend Prevention of Terrorism act by 10 years, maintain a strong military presence throughout the country, Police to discharge duties fairly and maintain rule of law.

The Muslim ministers in parliament have betrayed the country _ and their community

Call for early elections and start a fresh this UNP/SLFP working together is bullshit!!!!!!

    Let the people decide.

[We say Buddhism is the sole state religion of Sri Lanka, but our leaders believe Lord of Thirupathy is …….? I am confused. All leaders do not fail to visit or worship Lord of Thirupathy donates lavishly even at the expense of poor citizens of Sri Lanka.]

Oh Edward, dont you know this? Buddhism is for politics and Thirupathy for spirituality and obtaining favours such as winning elections, defeating enemies and attaining Moksha. I dont know why Thirupathiyan did not inform Gamrarala about this impending bomb blast by the Virgins Seekers. This offer of Virgins is going to attracts more Moda Muslim youths to join this path to moksha. The sinhala nation is in a state of confusion and their leaders’ only purpose to win elections.

leaders are fake and it is time to bring Kappetipolas back. Bulldozes conference halls and parliaments built by foreign bribes and rename airports and harbors, remove Tamil, Tamil relatives and Tamil supporting other religious groups to India and other countries.

There were two Presidents of Lanka who didnt run to make vows at kovils
      – J R J and C B K.

C B K says she’s a true believer of the Buddhist philosophy- that God is to be found within Oneself.

If the Sri Lankan politicians think that a trip to Thirupathi to worship Lord Vishnu will give them victory in the election they are sadly mistaken. Lord Vishnu does not and will not help the culprits. It was proved in 2015 January president election.

Mahinda also gave us Bodu Bala Sena, Alutgama, Digana violence. Robbed the nation, tried to form an illegal govt., with Sira, sold the country to China and India and named the projects after him as if he spent his father’s money on it. You cannot be so blind buddy….

what you are telling is true. I don’t have to go into detail, but simply and frankly said They are not qualified. India love to bring more Tamil settle them in Sri lanka if the can and Chinese to love if they can bring some Chinese into Sri lanka.
I repeat Chinese bribed MR Banda and after he was gone, then chose Rajapaksa with Chinese wife and Tamil brother in law. Both Mr Banda and Prez Rajapaksa have had same qualities both China and India have been looking for.
Mr Banda is a Tamil with daughters married to Tamil and was agent to both China and India to take bribes and stay in power.
And on the other hand, Chinese bribed Rajapaksa with a harbor and airport under his name the exactly the way Chinese bribed Mr.Banda with Conference hall and Colombo airport to his name.
Wait minute! I am not finish my friend. Meanwhile Japanese who is rival of Chinese came with a Grand idea to do same with UNP with help Western spies to Bribe Javardena who also resent South Indian origin have Tamil relative. After his death Japaanese with help of west bribed UNP with parliament and in the Western spies all killed all genuine Singhalese Buddhist including strongman Pramadasa and save Ranil to make him PM.
My friend, did you sea I am super idiot like grass-eating Sinhalese Modayas who takes bribes and put foundation for foreigners to hand over Sri lanka for Tamil or drive the Sinhalese out of the country.?
My friend I attacked Jews for nothing. We can’t criticize
Jews when it come to defend. I have met so many people around Europe and north America. but never met anybody like an highly educated Jew who told me this “if a Japanese, Chinese, Indian or even a Jew come and tell you “we love you”, don’t ever accept their bribe becos we don’t know the long term consequences.”

It is a waste of time writing to the selfish politicians to whom their interest matters most and not the country.
    Nevertheless I suggest the following:
:1) It is clear that the infighting within the Government has largely contributed to this devastating situation, Loss of life, Economy etc. A government’s priority should be the safe survival of its citizens. THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD RESIGN IMMEDIATELY.
    2) A transitory council should be appointed of well respected. capable intellectuals with a high sense of integrity comprising from all ethnic groups, until Presidential /General elections are held simultaneously.
3)The election commissioner along with the Counsel should be en-powered to introduce a criteria for those contesting .
    4) A new constitution to be introduced with proper checks and balances
5)Those who have neglected in their responsibilities to prevent this carnage ,to be dealt with, according to the laws of the Country.-R.De. S Ekanayake

Colossal failure. Sirisena was informed as early as April 4th that an attack on churches was likely. Not a simple rumor, but names and addresses of the attackers were provided. I am not sure why the intelligence services did not proactively act on this info. Now the intelligence will do some kind of investigation but it is imperative that they don’t let their guard down in the future, or there will be other attacks.

A very sad Easter for the Christians! What have they done to the Muslims to so barbaric? Both the President and the Prime Minster have to resign as they don’t have a clue as to how to govern the country! Stop passing the Total blame to the President! This radical group has been building up their clan for the last two years! Even some of our Muslim brothers wanted the government to take action! But the group was protected by a Minister. PLEASE TAKE ACTION AGAINST THE MINISTER!

the minister can’t tell the IGP to release the chaps who vandalized the Bhuddha staues. If the IGP did that then he should be removed, not the minister.IGP is under guess whom?So if dicks joy had asked the IGP to release due to the request of the minister then dick’s joy has to resign. However i agree that both should resign because the ministers must not try to interfere with the law.

in other countries, army already taken over, but SL army good for nothing. Pakistan army do not allow politician to play game because Pakistan army do not their head to nobody. Country’s security and sovereignty is number one. Israelis are same. Israelis send their politicians to jail and do not build conference halls. But what is worst in Sri lanka section of publics is corrupted and leaders of south Indian and Malaysian descendent or other forigners who are desperate to stay in power. Israel, Pakistan no any other country have no problem what Sinhalese Modayas have had Since 1815; one group of Singhalese give lives to keep Tamil out of Sri lanka while other group of Singhalese traitor Modayas smuggle Tamil, give them Sinhalese names go on massacre to protect South Indian Tamil. South Indian example is right there. It is called “SLFP”-Singhalese Kandyan traitors who massacre Ehalaypola’s Children. This is Singhalese “Modayas’ patriotism”

I 100% agree with Arun. Instead of worshiping the unknown god at Tirupathi, Sirisena should have worshiped Modi. Indian intelligence gave prior warning on this with the names of the terrorists. Specific places understandably are difficult to pinpoint. There was ample time to catch them with evidence. Now Sirisena has become the culprit. He bypassed the constitution as we saw in October and the security council rules by not including the ruling party. He is the most perfect doratupala king. Either he should resign or be impeached for his inaction and his continuing stupidity. Who knows what will happen to the country within the next few months with his leadership like king Kakille! Now his term is ending, he is behaving a mad dog worshiping unknown gods forgetting his job. Didn’t Sirisena say that he did not believe on unknown gods during his campaign during 2014?

When we vote to elect our leaders, we do it with the hope that they will govern the country with righteousness and commitment. The position of the president and the PM are like the two wheels of a chariot. They have to move in the same direction simultaneously to be able to go forward. They are only working to better their own political future and not that of the country. Did not Sirisena say that he will set fire to the whole country if he has to go? I have a gut feeling, the next government we could have is military rule. Looks like we have tried everything else. The author is right, the president failed us and must be held accountable.

The president is such an ignorant person to hold this position . In September he went to Nepal and big issue in that tip for him was the cadju served by the Air line . In October he is busy in planning the coup
and prove his ignorant by sacking the prime-minster So many intellectual has written article he violated the constitution. But he could not understand those learned people articles in the media he said he has not used the big trump and dissolved the parliament which the supreme court said illegal
and unconstitutional. He said during that time that he will not wait as a president if Ranil appointed as Prime minister though the Constitution clearly state the leader of the party having majority should be appointed. After the coup he took law and order ministry under him. But most of the time he was out of country . Went to singapore and Nirobi for conferences where the offical to be attended. He is the only head of state present in those conference keeping the important ministries under him. He went on private trip to india all the instance no acting arrangements made

    Comment by Ruwan…….
You have slip out of your fingers that my comment brand as “mad dog’. This is a result of UNP henchmen are politically not follows by politics but by insult other filth language> Yes I reconfirmed that UNP Ranil Wics has delivered nothing last 4 years and 4 months, an except that said blame and claim ” MR ruling govt was bunch of Rough’.
Needless to say our country that all nationalities of Sri lankan that, We are in the most critical part of history of 21 st century .We lost ample opportunities in past we ever-never ceased even one of that.
The Govt. of UNP leadership of Ranil Wicks and his team has missed all avenues last 4 years, never learn lessons of past Politics of War ,an Economic of Development and Social Reconciliation by their own mind of thinking .
An Eventually RW, CBK and MS lost working as team in politically of an accountability which that cannot denied that any right-thinking citizens of Island. Ultimately current regime is responsible lost of lives 300 hundred and 500 people casualties by local and foreign link Islam terrorist-attacks.
The crux of matter is not only security lapses,it has promised by” good governance and rule of law” has lost democratic rule of country by governors misdeeds of UNP’s of Democracy. The Parties become most corrupted rules since 71 years of post-independent regime who rule and ruin nation very short period of modern history of Lanka.
No need to write long sentences but by that one and only option remain behind that is Ranil Wicks and his Cabinet must resign promptly by shake of interest of People of Sri Lankan.. You have to give an opportunity for the seek fresh mandate from that citizens of People of Island.
That is the democratic way of resolved complex an issue by current UNP govt .

I endorse totally endorse Rev Dr Rohan De S Ekanayake’s suggestion, the country cant allow a group of selfish idiots to manage the country if we are to make progress.

  • 2
    3

No one can question presidents visit to India because he went to get blessings to run the country well and safely. In face he has been doing this quite often. Even our other great leaders like MR, Ranil too do this. They go there for the sake of the country. The management and poosaris at Thirupathy for example are so eager to receive them with their donations from Presidents fund or PM’s fund. All for the sake of the country. Even military people used to go there that include even the God Man Sai Baba to name a few. I am not sure any top Buddhist clergy too go to Thirupathy to get his blessings? Why cant the Buddhist followers who even punish a woman wearing a saree with a possible figure like buddha printed on it and lock them up. The Sinhala Buddhist leaders dont have any faith in Buddhism or do they think Hinthu Deios are more powerful than Buddha? Poor Buddha tried so hard to wean off from Hinduism by creating Buddhism but the leaders of protectors of this chosen land by Buddha are running to Thirupathy, Aiyappan, etc. etc. Very confusing indeed. Or Modi may bring in Hinduthwa to Dhamma Deepa in the near future. Reinvasion of hinduism into Buddhist land? Our historians and archeologists may have to create new evidences to cope with this current trend.

The entire yahapalu set up ( their backers with geopolitical agendas, their media, NGO etc) and their guilty supporters should be held responsible. They can’t absolve from the responsibility of safe guarding the people. It has failed in practically all fronts be it security, economy, moral decadence, proving the allegations etc. This was a much better country before and we all know this unless one deliberately ignores it for political compulsions and preferences. You can’t play the blame game and expect people to forgive the entire regime.

We should have a dictator but there is no suitable man for the job.

    • 9
      0

I don’t know whether a dictator is the right answer; in fact, I am inclined to think it is not. But of one thing I am wholly convinced. Arising out of the present debacle and his clear failure to take effective action to prevent the attacks, Sirisena should resign as President or be removed. And he should take, among others, the IGP with him. We have read that because of Sirisena’s feud with Ranil, he has been excluding Ranil from the Security Council meetings. The man does not realise he should not properly exclude the PM from these meetings, never mind how he feels about him. But in today’s Island we read that at yesterday’s NSC meeting, the President had brought with him Opposition MPs Dayasiri Jayasekera, Thilanga Sumathipala, Lasantha Alagiyawanna and Faiszer Musthapha who clearly had no right to be there. Sirisena is totally out of his depth and it seems his advisers (on whom he must rely for advice) are just as inept. For how long more can the country afford to put up with such ineptitude at the top?

  • 4
    0

While we are on the subject of Presidential ineptitude it would be pertinent to also consider what his Defence Secretary had to say after the Easter Sunday disaster. According to press reports today, he had said “the Defence Ministry never expected an attack of this magnitude except for some isolated incidents in certain places”. So, they decided to take no action? Presumably, they deemed that the deaths that might have resulted from such “isolated incidents” were of no consequence! .He had gone on to say that “the information received was unclear.” What any reasonable man will have then done is to have sought clarification. Why was that not done? After all, this was nothing trivial, it was a matter affecting national security.
The man was not done with his asinine comments for he was to add, “It’s not the first time a bomb went off in this country. During the height of the war, when emergency regulations were in force and road blocks installed at every two kilometers, bombs went off. Why are you trying to isolate this unfortunate incident?” Yes, Mr Secretary bombs did go off even at the height of the war but can’t you see the difference between unexpected attacks and attacks of which you were warned? And how insensitive is it to describe the carnage resulting from Sunday’s attacks as “this unfortunate incident”? More than 300 dead! Is that merely an unfortunate incident? Is that all it means to you? It beggars belief that a man who occupies the position of Defence Secretary could speak in these terms. The man is clearly an unmitigated nincompoop.

Sri Lanka Army should take over immediately. People in this country needs a change like this & 90% will support in favor. Problem will arise from MR’s ‘pohottuwa’ who cares & should not worry about them.

    • 3
      2

Speak for yourself. You and your dog does not make up 90% of the population. Not even all Sinhalese counted together will make up 90%. I am most definitely not a Pohottuwa supporter but I will not even contemplate such as idea. Countries where the army has taken over (such as Pakistan) are hotbeds of terrorism, not peaceful like you imagine. Leaders of a country should be educated, open minded and intelligent, not one-dimensional military men.

Pakistan survive because of military. if Pakistan had no military, Pakistan is gone long time ago. Sri lanka too had big support in badly needed time because Pakistan military. When Mrs. Bhutto came to power, She neglected Sri lanka and went to support India.

Such attacks can and will take place irrespective of who the Defence Minister is. What more proof do we need? Those claiming responsibility often do so for propaganda purposes.
Only the people can stop such attacks. The people are realising that those preaching extremes must and will be punished at the polls.

    • 4
      0

The point of the comment was not that with a different man as Defence Minister these attacks will not have occurred. The comment was about the sheer incompetence of the Defence Secretary in not acting properly on the warnings that the government had received and of his obviously cavalier attitude to the whole matter in trying to minimise the gravity of what has happened. The man is ready to dismiss it as ‘this unfortunate incident’, this after more than 300 have died. Will his comment have been different if his own family was among the victims? He also does not seem to realise that ‘this unfortunate incident’ as he calls it will have a serious impact on the economy. How many tourists does he think will still want to come to Sri Lanka?

initially The President should be impeached and he must be be punished in court for Genocide.
and his civic rite should be taken out. and his and his immediate family wealth moverbel and im moverbal property confiscated. labeled as a trater of this country.

All Sri-Lankans must get together and file case against the 225 members of Parliament as all of them are responsible for this disaster.

    Arun,

You are blaming only the president! The President and the Prime Minister are both equally responsible for this massacre! According to the Minister Kiriella, he said yesterday that “we were informed by the Indian foreign ministry”! The Indian foreign ministry will never contact and local intelligence to convey this message! It has be done officially and it has been passed on to the government foreign ministry! Its a shame that the President, Prime Minister and the Government say that they didn’t know about it! They knew this was brewing years ago when this group was trained by the ISIS in 2016! What did the government do? Simply nothing! Ranil is responsible for dismantling the intelligence service! The government should GO HOME! Appoint an honest clean person as the President who is not a parliamentarian!

Why is it so hard to see policemen in Singapore , like we do in Sri Lanka ?

Policeman are everywhere in Sri Lanka , but the crime is extremly high and why ? Is it the fault of The police ? No never , they kill themselves in the hot sun exposing their health to all form of cancer causing polutions, while in SINGAPORE it is very hard to see policen freely walking around and while I believe nowhere in the world people are on Social medias like in Singapore , you will be surprised to see even kids with phones , Simple, Singaporeans sre veru dicplined and have no time to gossip , to slander ,bother about others private lives , they have no time to waste on racism and bigotry , if you see anyone doing it, its mostly foreigners either living in Singapore or lived and taken maximum advantage of their generous education grants and now living overseas and tarnishing Singapore.
Finally Singaporeans openly and proudly display their ‘race on their NIC and no one will dare discriminate them based on it.
And every Single Singaporean is a volunteer Vigilant officer and a policeman that is the difference .
While here people are busy wssting their valuable time with social media engaging in gossips and shamelessly going after the private lives of others .
If a Politician wants to have fun it’s not anyone’s business and hotel must be first prosecuted for having hidden cameras or getting their staff to ‘record and share it.
The latest talk is of a very senior minister’s private life which is circulated .

    This must end .
CID start arresting them YOU know who they are.
