On the surface, without digging deep into motivations, this is GREAT. We need moderate voices from ALL religions, to show unity, and bring understanding and tolerance. We should not allow interference externally, or internally, to fracture this country. All citizens belong here, and no one should be made to feel otherwise.
    Good luck to this pant.

Individual rights are the means of subordinating society to moral law.

The smallest minority on earth is the individual.

Those who deny individual rights cannot claim to be defenders of minorities.

George W. Bush probably provided the least imaginative reason for starting a war when he did away with euphemistic niceties altogether. He could not think of a reasonable subterfuge and simply waged war for what he called preemptive reasons. However, no matter what excuse politicians dream up for waging war, the underlying cause of all wars is economic in nature.

“Patriotism is your conviction that this country is superior to all others, merely because you were born in it”.

Patriotism is to politics what faith is to religion: The unquestioned acceptance of information that is either unverified or that may actually be in conflict with factual evidence. Patriotism is the incubator of wars.

Similar to religion, patriotism is an emotion, as opposed to a rational thought process. Studies and surveys have consistently indicated that approximately 90% of persons in any given country have strong patriotic sentiments. This percentage is similar to the percentage of people involved in other faith-based activities, such as religion. This same percentage also reflects the bell-curve of the general intelligence level of a population: 90% of all persons in SriLankan population group register an IQ below 60.

      Great.

This is the only way to tackle racism. Which is very often based on despicable lies and rumours spread by the racists.

True during Nazism in Germany. And true under Gota & BBS Balu Sena age in Sri Lanka.

Defeat both Gota & Balu Sena on the public stage. Ideologically.

I was impressed with Hon. Sumanthiran’s speech in parliament despite interruption from jokers like Azwer. Sumanthiran would be an excellent candidate to represent both Tamil and Muslim population. Hats off to you, Sir.

Nothing will come out of this parley.
The will of President Rajapakse will happen.
But we are allowed to dream of a multicultural, multireligious society in a state practising democratic governance.
So sorry to be a pessimist, but warily a realist.

Hope they will make MR remember the Ideals he had when he was young and a practising Socialist. Now he seems to be focussing on his Vote Bank at the next Election, rather than the good of the Common People.

This is good. But we also need the TRUTH COMPONENT ON ALL SIDES ( like the RUWANDA – TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION COMMISSION) . It would be great if Bishop Redmund Tutu could be invited to future sessions of this nature . He is an expert at Truth and reconciliation . Also Discussions like this should also be held at the Provincial council level . Ethics should be a compulsory subject from grade 1 to OLEVEL . God bless MOTHER LANKA .

I would not say nothing could come out of this invitation. The speakers come from interesting backgrounds and have already spoken on these issues. Their views have naturally been varied, but they have all been advocates of peace and reconciliation in this country. I hope there will be a tremendous response-at least it will show the GOSL what the average Sri Lankan thinks.

The discourse among intellectuals will be ineffective in charting a good course for Sri Lanka. Public opinion has traditionally been hijacked by the unethical opportunists of society. Letting off steam and displaying their knowledge and status will only benefit the participants’ malnourished egos. It has not, and will do nothing, for the people.

Earlier it was the ethnic issue in the North only. Now has broadened into an broader ethno religous issue involving all communities and religons. It seems that the basic rights of ethnic and religous minorities is under threat due to the new sinhala buddhist nationalist movement spearheaded by the BBS.

According to this new nationalistic thinking ethnic and religous minorities are second class citizens of the country which will nullify any requirement for reconcilliation between communities. The construction of a Buddhist shrine has been built at the precincts of Kanniya Hot Wells a Saiva sacred site in a traditional Tamil village in Trincomalee district seems to be a move in this directon.

A fifteen-acre land has been appropriated by the SL Government Agent Major General (retd.) Ranjith de Silva on the instruction of Colombo. The Buddhist shrine has a signboard giving the name of the place of worship as ‘Unuthiya Lin Rajamaha Viharaya’, meaning the ‘Royal Great Temple of the Hotwater Wells’. Also moves by a private firm in Anuradhapura to acquire three acres of land that belongs to the Uthiravengai Vairavar Temple, closer to Kilinochchi town. Such moves indicate that the Govt and Rajapakse regime is in consonance with this policy.

Similiarly attempts to economically subjugate the muslim community and restrict their religous practices is being undertaken on a wide scale. Although rhetoric has reduced after the pepilyana incident it is expected that this will continue unless the govt takes a firm stand against such movements.

Pepiliyana incident has only helped slow down the rhetoric
and not stop it.Rogue patriots are patrolling the streets
ready to start business as usual at any time.every Sinhala
citizen has two options.Take part or just turn a blind eye
minding one’s own business.Nevertheless it’s good news that
at least there are few humans keen to safeguard humanity from
threats.Their voices must be made louder than the hidden
voices playing double game.Papiliyana incident was another
clear development that justice was stopped from serving
general public interest.Fashion Bug is reported to have said
that it withdrew the case with the greater national interest
in mind.True or false, let’s wait and see if this has made
any real impact on the hate campaign against Muslims. We had
witnessed even little helpless underage children were punished
by our justice on many occasions for petty crimes.

Building a Buddhist Shrine in a Saiva sacred place in Kanniya Hot Wells Area in Trincomalee District and a private firm trying to buy three acres of land that belongs to the Vairavar Temple in Kilinochi and other recent Buddhist Shrines built in the tradional homelands of the Tamils are all acts of encroaching on the religious rights of the Hindus in the North . All this coupled with a high rate of Military occupation of the tradional TAMIL areas I doubt if the GSL will benefit from such a conference on Religion ,Recociliation and the Future. . The Chief Thero of the BBS SHOULD BE A PARTICIPANT AT THIS CONFERENCE and hoping BBS WILL CHANGE AND SEE THE NEED TOBRESPECT ALL ETNIC AND RELIGIOUS GROUPS IN SL . Why have the organizers not invited the Ministers in charge of Relgious and Cultural affairs to the Discussions . I pray the discussions will impact the extremists and create an atmosphere to move towards a GOVERNANCE OF MOTHER LANKA WITH TOLERANCE . LOVE AND COMPASSION . Any IMPEDIMENT AT ALL TO THIS WILL BE THE RAJAPAKSA SAMAGAMA .
