External Influence In The Presidential Elections

By Latheef Farook

Unlike in the past powerful external forces are bound to play significant roles in influencing the forthcoming 8 January 2015 presidential elections marked by dramatic changes unfolding almost on a daily basis. This trend was triggered off ever since Health Minister and Sri Lanka Freedom Party General Secretary Maithripala Sirisena shocked the nation by crossing over to the opposition to become the opposition common candidate for the forthcoming presidential elections.

Many foreign powers, struggling to get a foothold in Sri Lanka in view of its strategic location in the Indian Ocean, have entered the scene. They had done so very successfully. Certainly they would support a candidate who would not only help ensure their presence, but also facilitate and enhance the implementation of their own agendas in the island.

Most notable among them are the Peoples Republic of China, neighboring India, United States, United Kingdom and Israel which managed to enter the island and penetrate many fields as part of their global agenda.

China, for example, emerged as a global economic and military power during the past three decades had managed to enter the vast and lucrative markets in the Middle East, Europe and United states .China has successfully entered African countries and established close political, economic and military ties with its multibillion dollar investment projects besides providing loan facilities and exploiting the natural resources.

Mahinda ModiAs a result China’s economic interests have expanded rapidly and its naval interest has spread across the sea lanes of the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Mauritius and Seychelles .In a related development China also plans to invest around 40 billion dollars to develop its “New Silk Road”, in its intercontinental land routes and maritime links through central Asia.

During the past nine years China, under President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s government, managed to get a strong foothold in Sri Lanka .Today the situation is such that it is almost impossible for the island to extricate itself from the Chinese grip.

Under the circumstance China would certainly do everything possible to ensure President Mahinda Rajapaksa remains in power.

On the other hand the growing Chinese presence in the island is a serious concern for neighboring India whose involvement in the ethnic conflict turned the island into a killing field.

Highlighting Indian concern over growing Chinese presence in the island Rtd Brigadier Rahul Bonsle, Director of Asian Security Risk Consultancy firm” Security Risk Asia stated   in an interview with Ceylon Today on Monday 1 December 2014”   that;

“the Chinese PLA Navy’s intention to gain exposure to the waters of the Indian Ocean for future operations is a big worry for Indian Navy. More over reports indicate that the PLA Navy has exclusive berthing rights at the port in Colombo and also in Hambantota, which effectively implies entry, exit and stocking including fuel and munitions over which Sri Lanka has no control”.

Indicating the growing alarm bell in New Delhi India’s National Security Advisor Dr Ajit Kumar Doval called for a demilitarized Indian Ocean following the visits of several Chinese submarines to Colombo.

In a special  discussion program  on Sri Lankan Presidential elections in  the “ India’s Want” television, former Indian Foreign Secretary Kanwal  Sibal said that” Indian won’t be too unhappy to see President Mahinda Rajapaksa go”. They pointed out that China has emerged as the largest foreign investor in Sri Lanka and this cannot be reversed. However when economic projects take naval proposition Indian is forced to take delicate decisions. They also discussed the 13th amendment, Sri Lanka’s failure to implement the agreement despite repeated assurances and emphasized the need for its implementation as agreed.

In fact before President Mahinda Rajapaksa assumed office Sri Lanka was almost like an Indian satellite state with government and opposition politicians rushing to India to get New Delhi’s blessings on the island’s internal issues.

This scenario changed altogether during President Mahinda Rajapaksa regime as he never allowed Indian interference in the island’s internal affairs.

However, anticipating a rightwing Bharathiya Janatha Party Hindutva government in India the Sri Lankan government has been cultivating for sometimes BJP and its parent body Rastriya Swayamsevak Sangh-RSS known for their extreme anti Muslim agendas and violence. There were frequent BJP-RSS visitors to the island.

It is common knowledge that India would always like to have Sri Lanka under its influence.

Equally the island remains important to United States which, with its ambitious global regime change program to rule and loot the world resources, has been invading countries,  destroying developed infrastructures, indiscriminately killing millions of innocent people and driving out many more millions who lived happily to refugee camps to live in appalling conditions.

The US also needs a presence in the island to counter the growing Chinese influence in the Indian Ocean to enter the emerging Asian markets.

The US government’s hostility to Sri Lanka has been an open secret ever since the military defeat of LTTE in May 2009 .Citing a special media briefing that was convened by the SLFP at the party headquarters after the common candidate was named columnist Jehan Perera had this to state in an article under the title “good governance is inclusive devolution of power”;

“The defection of ruling party members to the opposition were described as yet another “link in the chain of foreign conspiracies that seek to destabilize this country. There have been certain countries that have pumped money into this scheme through their embassies to establish a puppet regime in Sri Lanka. We warn them to put a stop to these activities,”

“The allegation of an international conspiracy against the country has gained currency due to the unrelenting international human rights campaign to put the government into the dock on the issue of war crimes. The government has pointed out that Sri Lanka is one of a handful of countries to be selected for focused attention by the UN Human Rights Council, while other countries with worse records have not been similarly pursued. This argument has resonance amongst most Sri Lankans who are deeply skeptical about the genuineness of international concern about the country and its people.  However, whether accusing the opposition and the common candidate of this offense is going to be taken seriously by the general masses of people is another matter? The decision of the Sinhalese nationalist JHU to break ranks with the government undermines the government’s case regarding an international conspiracy”.

Then come the increasing presence in the island of Israel which wields considerable political and economic influence in United States, United Kingdom and Europe and shape political decisions there.

Israel, established in the robbed Palestinians lands, has been trying since mid 1950s to enter Sri Lanka .Every time Israel managed to sneak into the the island through backdoor it was expelled through front door.

The reason being not only Sri Lanka, but most developing countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America detest Israeli presence in their countries in view of its crime records, continuous lawlessness and its history of destabilizing countries where it entered.

Israel has traditionally been the supporter of pro west United National Party. However in view of the recognition and facilities they enjoy under the present regime Israel is likely to support President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Equally important is the Tamil Diaspora which has established influential lobbies in several Western countries and certainly would do everything to bring down President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Instead of the usual united cry “outside intrusion will never happen!” we should embrace these ‘intruders’. Imagine: MR could have flirted with the Chinese in West and South, while opening the nation fully for India in the north. Imagine: the ferry of Mannar including the railway fully operational, a harbour and international airport in Jaffna / Trinco, connecting fully to India would have tremendous economic and diplomatic effects, while continuing to embracing the Chinese and let them develop the stretch Colombo till Hambantota.

The country would develop “in healthy competition” letting a new friend in while keeping the good old neighbour as a friend.

You must be from Mars Mr Farook, to say that, “… in view of the recognition and facilities they enjoy under the present regime Israel is likely to support President Mahinda Rajapaksa.”

You have demonstrated a very poor reading of global affairs by this statement. As a Sri Lankan Muslim you should be ashamed to suggest the Israel will support MR.

Israel is behind the pursuit of President Rajapakse through the corrupt UNHRC, due to his life-long support to the Palestinians. Also the NGO are funded through the globql Zionist resources. (The same reason they pursued all the powerful ME leaders from Assad in Syria to Gadaffi).

They want instbility here and they will provide money (shit in their secret code) to the rabble “Common” opposition.Israel, like their guardian Kissinger said, has no permenant “friends”.

      Your analysis is fundamenally wrong.

Chapter 1: Introduction Common Sense Sri Lanka 2014 – Author 1

As long and violent abuse of power , and as the President of Sri Lanka has undertaken in his own right , to support the parliament in what he calls theirs, and as the good people of this country are grievously oppressed by the combination, they have undoubted privilege to suppress and abuse the citizens rights given by the constitution. The cause of Sri Lanka is in a great measure the cause of all Sri Lankans.

    Mr.Farook, Forget about foreign Intervention.

1.Would you like to have the Presidential form of governance continue?
    2. Would you like to see 18A which Hakeem and his party voted for, to continue?
3.Is it not good to see 17A back in the Constitution?
4.How about having a Right to infomation Act(RTI) as in India in Sri Lanka?
5.How about having a Victim and Witness Protection Act?
    6. How about getting all the contestants in the Presidential Election to declare their assets?
(I remember reading somewhere about Basil R-incidentally an American Citizen as well like his brother Gota saying that the Rajapakses own only a house? Is this also a conspiracy by America to have a very important Minister and the Defence Secretary in this government?

I agree with most of what you say about America and Israel but unfortunately the record of the Middle East Islamic countries are no better. Don’t you remember how our poor little girl from Muthur was beheaded in Saudi? Don’t you know how the Passports of our Labourers are impounded once they land in the Middle Eastern countries?Don’t you know that the Kings,Sultans, Sheiks and Emirs of most of the Arabic countries are supporters of USA and other western countries to cling own to their postions.

Why don’t you write something to benefit the people of this country both Muslims and Non-Muslims, so that they could breathe the winds of democracy.
By the way who is the candidate you are going to support, MR or MS or both or will wait until 9th of January like Hakeem and Co.

Pity Farook wasn’t specific on who is backing the unholy Alliance of the Opposition which has replaced the UNP, TNA, Diaspora Troika which was planned for a long time and presented as the best alternative to our inhabitants after Nanthikadal..

IF he was more specific, the readers would have noticed some similarities.

BTW ,are there Shites and Sunni sects among our inhabitant population of Muslim brethren.?..

    Kamakaaran,

La theef is your man Kamakaaran. This time he is little bit jealous that Malinda won the prize for creative writing. Next time he will do the election campaign properly for the money is receiving from the government.

After Azwar fired, Keheem has fully surrendered. Then, how the La theef can rebel against the Royal Government.

`visits of several Chinese submarines to Colombo.`

That is because unprovoked, Modi was hailing japan and south china sea nations to go to war and his assistance to them and has nothing to do with Lanka. ofcourse when China or India asks the government to stand or sit they must because it is so.
Ceylon got into this mess because of M/s B joining the Pan Arab against Pan Islam.
and ditched the west which is where the export earnings come from.

The same happened when Xi visited Hindia – In the north the Chinese forces started marching into Hindian territory and this sent shudders up the Hindian spine because they aren’t prepared with obsolete russian weapons and Russia is down trying to save its rouble and quality of life- so where will the spares come from in the event of war.
Therefore Modi Brought in ITT boy from Goa (RSS) as defence minister to tap ion Desi brains across the spectrum in the US- all along Gujarati Diaspora created his sensational victory via the media it owns- but Gujarati’s only buy and sell others goods- slippery folk sitting on pot of money.

The EU alone does over $1billion business with China on a daily basis- so it cannot back Hindia and lanka screw your necklace concept -p the white elephant in a danger zone when the most sophisticated site is Diego Garcia- where is the Plane that went missing with many Chinese engineers and the chip just near DG??

Koheda yanney Malley Pol. What strategic gains or business gains does Israel have by “coming in through the back” or front door Farook? Really India is the regional super power and has very strong relationships with Israel including military relations. Sri Lanka was helped many times(of course for a price) in fighting tamil tiger terrorists by Israeli weapons supplied in a timely manner including the Kfir jets during Chandrika’s regime. MR also relied on Israeli made UAVs and other important strategic weapons and Dvoras. You are being a typical blinded by your hate for Israel Muslim rather than being a Sri Lankan by looking for external bogeymen. Palestine is not relevant to Sri Lanka’s national security. Islamic extremism emanating from Saudi Wahabists is. Everything is always Israel’s fault or USA’s fault. No doubt the US is playing dirty games and wants regime change and that is why they supplied satellite phones but without timely Israeli, Pakistani and Chinese Aid Tigers will still be creating hell for Muslims, and Sinhalese both.

There is one thing that should be crystal clear to everyone as Mahinda Rajapaksa’s plans unravel:

He, and he alone, wanted these early elections.

Now that it doesn’t look as though he’s going to win, there is all this talk of foreign backing for his rivals. Of course, the World has changed, and become much more inter-dependent. So, others want to know what’s happening, and may even play a hand in directing what happens. This complaint is one which suggests that what “foreigners” are doing is wrong.

Blame no one; you tried to spring an unfair surprise on the country. Now explain why you did so, and if you are rejected by the country accept that with dignity.
