All this shows that we were one people at that time,the nagas,yakshas and the devas.There were no specific sinhala or tamil names as such.Everything was mixed up.It is only later that these two branches of the same tree the sinhalese and tamils stated to occur and the names became specific to each branch.
The reason for the two branches to occur was the vijaya coming from gujarat and subsequently bringing people he wanted from orissa.These people mixing with the locals brought in a north indian influence.So it was easy for arahat mahinda,the son of emperor ashoka to bring in bhuddhism to them.The locals who did not mix with vijaya would have rejected bhuddhism and continued to be snake worshippers.
Bhuddhism was in pali language.It was a holy script not a language of communication.In order to teach the locals a new language from the pakrit languages would have been adopted and that is how the sinhala language evolved and due to the new language a new race called the sinhalese started.
The nagas of course would have been heavily influenced by the chola invasions and become saivites and tamils just like the other nagas like dutu became bhuddhists due to the influence of vijaya and then became sinhalese.
In the last 300 years before the colonials took over sinhala and tamil kings brought in more people from south india for various tasks including the army and swelled their ranks due to that.
now we dont know officially at least among the sinhalese and the tamils who are the original inhabitants and who are those who came in later form india and who are those who are mixed from both as well as between sinhalese and tamils but unofficially due to the names and caste etc you can have a idea but not solid proof as so much admixture and name and caste changing and cover ups taken place over the centuries.When you come across a name like nagalingam you feel the person might be a original naga.
Or a name ending with tissa also could be a original naga because dutu’s period of kings were all tissa’s including his father kavantissa,but nobody can be pure now because in this small island of ours much ethnic admixture would have taken place over the 2500 centuries.Though we talk a lot about 2500 years the balangoda man clearly shows that people have been inhabiting this island for more than 30000 years.It is not like as if evryone can start to claim ownership to this land from a mere 2500 years ago just because vijaya landed at that time.

I agree with you but also remember that war makes animals out of even the best of men. The constant stress, fear and hardship have an adverse effect on individuals whichever side they are on. The US Marines summarily executed scores of Japanese POW’s on Iwo Jima, this was put down to the situation they were in and the effect it had on their minds. No one can expect mercy in war, especially those who clearly take sides.
The two communities have to make an effort now to build bridges and sadly neither side seems to want to do so.
