Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said that urgent steps should be taken to put an end to ragging in university system and conditions created for students to successfully engage in academic work without any hinderance, even if it requires the recruitment of additional staff.Wickremesinghe made these observations at a meeting at Temple Trees attended by the Minister of Higher Education and Highways Lakshman Kiriella, the Secretary to the Ministry of Higher Education, Vice Chancellors of universities and Treasury officials this morning (December 14).
The meeting had been convened to discuss university-related issues and plans to upgrade higher education in the country. Wickremesinghe pointed out that it is the duty of all Vice Chancellors to ensure that education in the universities is raised once more to international standards. This and not the construction of new buildings is what should be prioritized, he said.
Wickremesinghe also called for the expansion of post graduate education and research and recommended that joint programmes be introduced through the Ministry of Development Strategies and International Trade.
