Finally, Ranil Calls For An End To Ragging In Universities

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said that urgent steps should be taken to put an end to ragging in university system and conditions created for students to successfully engage in academic work without any hinderance, even if it requires the recruitment of additional staff.Wickremesinghe made these observations at a meeting at Temple Trees attended by the Minister of Higher Education and Highways Lakshman Kiriella, the Secretary to the Ministry of Higher Education, Vice Chancellors of universities and Treasury officials this morning (December 14).

The meeting had been convened to discuss university-related issues and plans to upgrade higher education in the country. Wickremesinghe pointed out that it is the duty of all Vice Chancellors to ensure that education in the universities is raised once more to international standards. This and not the construction of new buildings is what should be prioritized, he said.

Wickremesinghe also called for the expansion of post graduate education and research and recommended that joint programmes be introduced through the Ministry of Development Strategies and International Trade.

There is no ragging in our Universities.
What goes on in the name of ragging is an exhibition of Sadism which increases in intensity year after year.
    Capital punishment is the answer!
Why is it that most members of the Academic Staff turn a blind eye to this phenomenon?

Because they are also inhuman sadists, irresponsible and do not care. No accountability for staff to mould and guide students. They love their paid holidays when students strike. Must draft code of conduct and training to teach students.

        Observer.

To control this situation authority should see the possibility of appointing foreign academic staff, @ least 50%.

      Plato

Considerable percentage of academic staff seems to be in favor of ragging.

They believe that the ragging community in universities represent oppressed social class of the country & their ragging gives them an abnormal satisfaction.

That’s why they turn blind eye to it & that’s one of the reasons for inability to contain raggers.

      Plato.

“What goes on in the name of ragging is an exhibition of Sadism which increases in intensity year after year.”

You are spot on. Where do these sadist come from, Moon, Mars, planet Sith? They come from the same community just as the war criminals, torturers in the armed forces and Police Department..

      “Capital punishment is the answer!”

At the end of the academic year the uni would have none to teach.

“Why is it that most members of the Academic Staff turn a blind eye to this phenomenon?”

      Good question. Think about it.
SJ maybe able to answer your question. However he will have to blame Chelvanayakam, Amirthalingam, Sambandan, Sumanthiran,……………………. for what has been happening in the Uni in the name of ragging.

Ragging is an outlet for students to release their pent-up social inadequacies, economic frustrations, their personal family struggles which have tainted their upbringing resulting in behavioural disorders. We need serious counselling for these students because if it goes unchecked they manifest in the later years in their careers and personal lives too.

      Very few understand reality.

VCs or the academic staff are not interested in stopping ragging. If they had any interest in doing this, ragging would have stopped many decades ago.

What are the academics interested in ??

1 not being held responsible for producing unemployable graduates
2 be entitled to duty free car permits
3 ability to admit their kids to popular govt schools
4 be allowed to pick their kids from schools at 1-30 pm
5 not being held responsible for not revising decades old teaching material
6 be allowed to use facilities for fee levying external degrees and masters programs during weekends
7 not being pushed to do quality research work
8 not being asked to improve English communication skills and IT skills
9 not being asked to pay taxes on their other income which is a multiple of their regular income as an academic
10 not being asked to increase their teaching hours from the current 5-6 hours a week.

Sri Lankan University problems deeper than Ranil’s poor understanding. Being a businessman, I was trying to bid for tender on car renting for one public University. But I did not get it finally I checked and found so called VC of that University create a fake company and got that contract. Later I checked inside how things are working. It is hell of corruption and all human ills. They recruit dual pass port holders or completely foreign pass port holders and bogus local PhDs as Lecturers. All the consultancy works come to University diverted to own private company and do it. Now a days more Lecturers are getting Colombo and local Universities bogus PhD and becoming Senior Lecturers. Without PhDs many are becoming professors. Recently One VC retired after six years of service. I checked his personal wealth over billions US $. How he earned so much money. All the supplies and construction in his university done by his bogus companies. Least qualified and backbone less person VC is appointing as Head of the Dept to run his dirt business. Poor Ranil is talking about Ragging.

Academic staff turn a blind eye due to a combination of cowardice and fear that their own houses will be stoned if they interfere.
Most ‘ragging’ is undertaken by the bully-boys who enjoy the sado-masochistic kick they get out of it.
Sri Lankan universities are a hotbed of egregious activity and nobody gives a hoot if a three year course runs to 4 or more.

I heard the kind of ragging or rag season is common to Adisabeba Uni students too, but if one would compare it iwth that of lankens, lankens have been the most brutal men that to attack their juniors verbally and physically.
I have faced the ragging at Pera in late 80ties and left the country for Europe at th etime, Unis closed without further notice. THere I understood, how civilized th eeuroepan Universities have been.

Itis th egap between various walk of people make it difficult to face at Universities. There, young boys and girls become isolated not being able to face the cruelties being practised by seniors on them.
They are just BA, BSc level students in their senior years, but they have become swollen by every means them to be the masters to their junior ones entering the univeristies. All these now as I see rise up through psychological inbalances of the average.
If joined anyone from colombo or other popular schools, they have been given more ragging items … This I know very well.

    Mr PM .
A lot needs to be done in universities..
First and foremost stop all political influences in universities..let it grow in its natural course.
What do I mean by that ..
Let university go back into its traditional way and traditional customs .
Seniors should get promotion in its hierarchical orders and not other way around.
So many CVs/ Deans/are come into seat from back doors at the expense of seniors.
    This damages university education…
Can you do some thing good ..
Take off power of President from nominating VCs. That is bad practice that causes a lot of bias in university education..
How on earth politicians interfer in university . This is utter discrimination .VCs are selected and elected by academic community of university..yet how so many juniors come to the post with suport of thug politicians…
This is what you need to do first and foremost most.
Secondly the quality of education is very poor in arts and humanities .
Do some thing to upgrade that.
It will need some monitoring system in university.
Some lecturers do not come at all or come once a week.
Some are copy cut old notes
    No innovative teaching ..
So many other issues too and I will write in details soon.
Do not touch Students but touch the quality of education in university and that is what we need.
    Stop bad ragging practice
That is good but more than that we some thing good for university

As usual Ranil is out of touch the reality. See inside Universities: It is family business and some people private kingdoms’. See how all supplies and construction activities are doing by the University Lecturers, VCs and Deans by creating own companies. Some time for newly created faculties and Depts they use their own henchmen as Deans and Head to get these incoming contracts while qualified people are available inside. Appoint Presidential Commission and see how Universities are run inside.

If possible close down Colombo University bogus PhD factory and recheck qualifications and publications of all professors. Then you will see more than 99% fake professors. Without PhD from recognised world class University never give senior Lecturer positions. Stop sending University teachers for countries like India, China, Malaysia to do PhDs. No one should allow to do local bogus PhDs. Especially Colombo University family Dept PhDs. With immediate effect Emiritus status given by Colombo University family dept to its grand father must be cancelled. Both husband and wife should not allow to work same Dept, faculty or may be same University.

Be serious, you are asking for trouble.
The Rajapaksa brothers will not forgive you for what you have suggested here.

Are you expecting Dr Mahinda Rajapaksa (LLD) and Dr Gotabhaya Rajapaksa (DSc) to relinquish their titles? Those titles were bestowed on them merely to boost the Sinhala/Buddhist ego within the academic community and reward the killers in chief for killing more people particularly the Tamils and the defeat of Tamil pride and their claim.

I think you should seek asylum elsewhere as you have touched the ugly side of the academic achievements. Not only the brothers but also the academics who might have profited from isuuing PhDs but hope to politically profit from those brothers will not forgive you.

The brothers earned their titles for letting more blood through out the island.

Let freshers introduce themselves to each other, and put a name badge on them. Any senior talking to them is prohibited for 3 or 6 months and should be expelled without mercy. The staff should be available to receive complaints from freshers with their telephone nos. on notice boards. If any sadistic sexual practices are detected, police must be called in or the dean should be sacked. These hardened street walkers are the failed, insecure, abused who may have entered with softer, compassionate hearts. Discipline is what is lacking now.
GMOA will take to governing soon and will do a unique capitalistic revolution. No need to fear racing rajas any more as they will have no chance after GMOA take over to govern in rotation. The country will progress.

Probably, Ranil may be the best (most eligible) among the worst to hold office and certainly not the man to uphold morality. Wasn’t he a student leader at the time when he was in the University? Will he deny that he has ever ragged a single student even in the mildest form? Can he ever be the role model to uphold women’s rights, women’s protection etc. when he is the one who promoted Gonawala Sunil, the convicted rapist, secured a pardon and made him a JP under JR? (The Secretary to the Ministry of Justice at that time was whisked off for opposing a pardon to GS.). Most recently can Ranil ever be the first person to be in charge of the Banking system of the country when he is responsible for the appointment of his buddy Arjun Mahendran as the Governor of the Central Bank? (We all know what took place thereafter). So dear Ranil, you can definitely help to improve the University infrastructure and that includes buildings as well but don’t preach morality when you don’t have the moral authority to do so. It is only a University Graduate of Sri Lanka WHO HAS NEVER RAGGED A STUDENT has the moral authority to rise and say “HEY STOP THIS NONSENSE OF RAGGING”.

      Dear Good Sense,

I don’t consider myself to be a particularly virtuous guy, but going on what you say, I do have the authority to ask people to stop ragging.

      *

However, I do recognise that the problem is a more complex one that naive guys imagine it to be. ‘m not wasting more time on this subject.

      *

How to improve the Universities is a huge worry. However, even that now takes second place to identifying persons for whom we can cast a vote in February without being afraid that we will later have to dissociate myself from the choice that I make.

        Dear Sinhale Man,

Judging from what happened in Jan 8, 2015 and thereafter, we have a sorry choice, that is to choose the best from the disqualified. Certainly if you caste your vote either way you would regret. But do please vote and select the best among the worst. The danger is as I have previously commented the young have lost confidence in democracy and the election chief confirms that stating that they do not show any interest in registering to vote. That is fertile ground for another Zimbabwe. But unlike Zimbabwe we would be so unlucky to have a despot in our midst who would rob the entire country in 24 hours. So be democratic. Exercise your vote even if you later have to dissociate yourself from the choice you make. By the way if you imply that as a graduate of a Sri Lankan University you have never ragged a junior, even in the mildest form, while as an undergraduate then you deserve my respect as you would belong to the rarest of the rare.

Good Sense.Let me correct you. There are many who never participated in ragging.I have never done it.Neither majority of my colleagues in the Science faculties.

What Sinhala Man says is right, from 1970 onwards, since the time I started to vote-I have regretted voting, mainly since 1977. Then onwards we have been cheated. The biggest cheats are the present lot. I expected a lot from this crowd Ronnie de Mel and .GL>Peiris (is another greedy pot from the University), who should be stripped of their degrees. They have done much dis-service to the degrees they hold and to the country as a whole.

I did not vote in 1965, but .I saw the low quality of appointments made. I joined a Corporation, the Board of directors had a drunked and a tailor. the next lot that came in appointed a Karawadu Mudalali. Years later a low level security guard was appointed as a Director. These appointments cut across both the UNP and the SLFP.

Ranil promised to vet all appointments to higher posts but continue to appoint his henchmen. The SAITM issue was not handled properly not in a manner that it should have been handled. They never countered the false grounds on which the GMOA fought- the quality of education. The main ground should have been the quality of the Faculty. That was never discussed. Both sides used emotional issues.

Can one expect anything better from this lot or from the lot on the otherside?

Please don’t put down entertainer’s & comedians by comparing noble professions. Better comparison would be a failed politician who would do anything to hang on to the babbles of power. I do admire RW unwavering faith and belief in his close buddy Arajuna Mahendran and his son in law’s honesty and integrity in front of mountain of evidence of impropriety in dealing with bond issue.

What a way to govern a country. there is a higher education minister. Just before an election, in the middle of a bond scam, while one accused as a corrupt bank governor still working in his own ministry, while keeping an accused and proven money launderer in his cabinet, he is showing his power in another ministry. Is that corruption or what ?

There is a ministry of education, there is ministry of higher education, there is a grant commission but the university research will be promoted through development strategies and international trade. How about taking it under finance ministry or Ranil’s own ministry.Grand vision to develop the country.

It is the ‘rags’ who indulge in ragging. The ‘rags’ are cowards, they act in a pack – primitive instinct.
The ‘rags’ often have strong political connections which effectively ties the hands of VCs. The ‘rags’ end up in the armed services, police and as politicians. The cycle goes on.
Ranil will not address the basic reasons as to why VCs are unable to control this sadistic behaviour.
Instead he takes to this sagacious pontification.

Higher education appointed by the minister would not have passed A/L, probably even O/L. He die snot ahve anyone who stepped inside the university. So, only the Prime minister who did London Matriculation (?) instead A/L, has to address university problems.

Dr. Ranil Wickremesinghe needs not to worry about Post Graduation. We have that as automatic promotion here in CT. In CT, we have a lot of PhDs. Many of them are recommended by persons like Lasksiri Fernando, ripen, enlightened minds and we have been conferring with utmost vetting & perusal procedures of the achievement of the Individuals. Research is done by Thero de Silva in Politics, Chandra in Finance and Nagananda in Law. Nothing beyond that is needed in science. (If Australian university had thought twice before giving Ranil the PhD, Ranil would have thought twice to sell Hangbangtota harbor and hold that cardboard cheque proudly to the Lankawe Modayas to watch and feel happy on the TV. To Protect the Old Royal Brother-in-law, the idiot is not selling off the Sri Lankan Air Lines and putting that money to save other lands he is losing to China. For a proud National carrier he sold Hangbangtota? )

Standardized Pogrom Initiation should not be abolished from Universities. It is the basic initiation for the graduates when the out to lead their ordinary middle class, proud & fruitful life of Mother Lanka citizen, their mind can be uplifted to loot and have respectable income and have their further expenses subsidized by bribe and burglaries.

Sorry But, Unless fully abolished the Kanangra’s lousy education systems which was created to teach Tamils how the unruly girl ran out of home to jungle and came back without father unknown children got glorified by Buddhism, Lankawe is not going anywhere in education. Western science can’t be fed along with 2500 years old rotten culture. That system is not good to teach the unmolested, pure and clean knowledge on the innocent young minds, but to teach how to cross the borders in life on the negative direction and start an overly indulged life to earn names like to Rapist Army.

I heard Ranil wanted the whole banking system privatized. The Central bank robbery was one step in that direction. He has sold most of the profitable govt institutions. those that can be sold are still under the govt. Now, he is selling part built hotels. Ranil wants to privatize universities too. It is the american system, probably american universities will step in. There were other plans that did not materialize. Remember Nimal Devasiri was very vocal about universities. It looks he wants only the money increased while lecturers live home most of the week.

Ragging is not merely a university based thing.Roots of the ragging has been spread towards the political headquarters of frontliners and JVP. I was an undergraduate of an university of Peradeniya once a time. So,I know how these thugs have been forcibly enrolling students to vain protest marches.Their instrument of terror is ragging.Without ragging no survival for these political parties.

    ragging in higher education facilities
a legal system which delays justice
a medical system which places more importance on curative rather than preventive medicine
a university system which produces unemployed graduates
none of which successive governments did not have the guts to change

Ranil is a product of our local University system, although he pretends not to be :-).
during his days in the UoC, I am sure that there was some “ragging” during Ranil W’s time as well.

I am fully aware of some ragging activities @ the UoC, with every new batch, and as a senior staff member it is beyond our control.

in effect, “ragging” constitutes as an interface between the so called “high Society”and the common lower and lower middle class students.

As a Preofessor ( now) but having gone through the entire process of “room raging”to “bus ragging” to have visited over tweleve (12) “palace ragging”, as a freshman @ the UoM in the late 1908’s, I can still recall thoe memories of bearing.

Yet, I never felt any fear, nor any threat of life during those rag sessions, and th end result was that I, and all my friends who went through the same process, had many friends in our senior batches, who helped us in our studies and in our course works.

I still know some of my senior batch mates, only by the fact they were involved in ragging me.

Whilst i do not want to justify ragging, let me put forward the fact that I was a victim of extreme ragging, if one want want to call it, yet I not only survived, but learnt many a lessons of life during that period.
p.s. Of course, I did rag our junior batch of students, and that was when I found my nearly wife.

My tenure @ UoM is the best and sweetest of life experiences.
    Cheers to all,

    Dharshana W, Ph.D.

When you have junior academic staff given VC posts due to their political affiliation what more can you expect. Even when more senior dons held this post they turned a blind eye to this fearing student violence. When Prof. Epitawattte was VC SJ’Pura he took some decions and Chandrika promptly removed him at the insistance of JVP who held the student unions. Academic staff also takes a passive no hands atttitude and it is impossible to catch ragggers. Even if inquiries are held, VCs usually get wrestled down by student union thugs. VCs want to retain their posts and show the authorities that everything is hunky dory at the University. Most acdemic staff who have also been raggers in the past turn a blind eye. Unless these students are handed over to the police to be tried under the antiragging act students will never learn any lesson.

Millions of Sri Lankan ragged by UNP Ranil Wicks since 2015 January 8th by advice from MS & CBK of that two prominent intellects your ruling inner circulars.
An University ragging having that only period that confined to seasons. But that your Ranil -UNP of ragging against our people has no time limited or it is borderless at all.
It has not respect or accepts governing Laws by your regime political game plan by UNP leadership.
Or it has denied or not an apply any ” Rule of law and Good Governances” under your administration in

Does anybody listen to Ranils bullshit.? Ragging is an opportunity for people who lack personality, and who are cowardly by nature to give vent to their secret desire to dominate others, something that they did not have the character or strength to do previously. They find Dutch courage in numbers and go hell for leather against the poor new arrivals who are individuals and not United. In former days when students from the more prominent Colombo schools entered the university no one dared rag them, as usually they pass in numbers and know each other, and are socially and intellectually superior to those coming from remote country schools. These days however the Maha vidyalayas send in many students from a rural background and they simply enjoy lording it over the hapless new entrant often from a similar background. I believe that with time and better educational traditions the sadistic enjoyment of ragging will hopefully subside.
