Firepower At Kollupitiya In A Mahabharatha-Style War Against Unrighteousness

By Shyamon Jayasinghe

Shyamon Jayasinghe

“The war of the Mahabharata illuminates us when reflecting the context of this political conflict. What is now on, isn’t a war between Ranil Wiclremesinghe/UNP and the Sirisena-Mahinda junta. It is a Mahabharata style-style war of Dharma (righteousness) versus Adharma (unrighteousness). If Sri Lankans want to live in the future as a free people who decides the way they are to be governed, then they have no option but to join the forces of  Dharma.”

Protest

Unlike the last three years of yahapalana governance, when the media was set free to criticise, yesterday domestic Sri Lankans could not view over their favourite TV channels the massive, consuming and raging firepower of mass collectivity that assembled at Kollupitiya. With short notice and sans any paid attendance whatsoever nearly 100,000 are said to have gathered and roared there in the precincts of Temple Trees. It was to protest against the unrighteousness or adharma of the coup -junta of Sirisena-Mahinda who on the dark night of the 26th October had unlawfully pushed out the current Prime Minister, Ranil Wicklremesinghe, and replaced the latter with the former President whom 6.2 million voters had kicked out of office-lock, stock and barrel in the year 2015. That peoples’ victory was all the more important because it had taken place despite the total and outrageous abuse of incumbent power by Mahinda Rajapakse and the corrupt brigade that formed his government.

The War of the Mahabharata

What we observed in Kollupitiya yesterday was an unmistakable and impressive manifestation of a kind of battle reminiscent of the classic war related in the Mahabharata-one of the most important epics of Hindu India. That war was fought between the Pandavas and Kauravas at Kurukshetra, present day Haryana. Arjuna was the great Prince of the Pandavas. Bishma was his counterpart from the Kaurava army. Bhishma was Arjuna’s uncle in whose lap he had virtually played as a kid. When it came to a point of attack, Arjuna was overwhelmed by the fact of that blood relationship, withdrew, and went up to God Krishna for advice. Krishna’s response was to remind Arjuna that this is not a mere war between two sides but a war of righteousness (Pandavas) versus unrighteousness (Kauravas); therefore, he has no choice but to fight for righteousness.  The Bhagwadgita relates the conversation bewenn Arjuna and the God.

The war of the Mahabharata illuminates us when reflecting the context of the this political conflict. What is now on, isn’t a  war between Ranil Wiclremesinghe/UNP and the Sirisena-Mahinda junta. It is a Mahabharata-style war of Dharma (righteousness) versus Adharma (unrighteousness.) If Sri Lankans want to live in the future as a free people who decides the way they are to be governed, then they have no option but to join the forces of justice or Dharma.

Junta Coup

The unrighteousness of what the cabal did on the night of last Friday the 26th October just hits any rational and impartial man in the head. It wasn’t a done thing by any standards of ethical politics. Ethical politics, one may say, isn’t anymore operative in Sri Lanka, Paradise, when considering the numerous liars, cheats, robbers, money launderers,  murderers, heroin dealers and so on among the politicians or pollies over there today. Yet, there lives -on in the public collective consciousness the fundamental principle that defines a civilized nation. The hightime rogues and black men of the decade-old previous regime were decisively beaten in the elections in 2015 by a nominated common candidate of the other side of the divide. The broad civil movement led by an outraged Venerable monk of high integrity-Revd Maduluwave Sobitha- decided to come to an agreement with Ranil Wickremesinghe, leader of the UNP to back a common candidate.  Sirisena’s name had been proposed by Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga-former President and leader of the SLFP-Sri Lanka’s other major party. Ranil agreed and the entire apparatus of the Grand Old Party (UNP) spread far and wide was mobilised to put Sirisena in the seat of power. The UNP is Sri Lanka’s largest single party and it has been a most stable outfit for 71years.

Like in a bad fable, the Rajapakse forces quietly crept into the good books of Sirisena and poisoned the latter who isn’t known very much for his wit but only for his unique capacity for treachery. Maitripala Sirisena loves betrayal. He betrayed thrice in his political career spanning 40 years. First, he betrayed his former leader and former President Mahinda Rajapakse; second, he betrayed Ranil Wickremesinghe and his UNP; third, and now, he betrayed the Sri Lanka constitution with its democratic process embedded therin. Sirisena tried once to oust Wickremesinghe by promoting a no-confidence motion against the latter. Mahinda went about openly acknowledging that Sirisena had sought his help to oust Ranil. Sirisena who, soon after victory, stated that Mahinda would have murdered him and buried him six feet under had the common candidate attempt failed  has by now found common ground with the former President. Your enemy can be your best friend.

Betrayal of the Constitution

And so, in that dreadful night the Sirisena-Mahinda cabal contrived a a coup against the provisions of the constitution: The constitution clearly states in its 19th Amendment that the President could not, like in the days of Rajapakse, any longer arbitrarily dismiss the Prime Minister. That required a passage of a motion by Parliament, which if successful, the PM and government both go out together. The rationale of the 19th amendment was to bring the President even partially under the Parliament until the latter office is wholly made nominal with the completion of a new constitution. The abolition of the Executive Presidency was the main election demand in 2015 and so the new government had to oblige by bringing in halfway legislation that gives effect to that mandate.

19th Amendment as a Smart Act

Ranil Wickremesinghe’s sense of quick vision was demonstrated when he hurriedly rolled in the 19th Amendment in the heat of the election victory. Sirisena and a Parliamentary two-thirds was in mood to approve the new legislation. It went through. Had that not been done, then Sirisena would have dismissed the Prime Minister and government many times by now. As things prevail, both President Sirisena and the Joint Opposition of Mahinda are bowled out. Any judicial test of this flagrant violation would , surely, reaffirm our position.

In fact, if Sirisena -Mahinda chose to they would have referred the matter to the courts before their outrageous act of violation.  Surely, they had foolish pundits like the former Law Professor, now widely known as ‘Ugath Modaya ( learned fool). They didn’t do that because they knew the result beforehand. For the same reason, they didn’t think of taking the issue before Parliament.

Cowardice of an Anti-Hero

This implies an act of political cowardice. Mahinda Rajapakse did successfully brainwash the people to the perceptual position that he was a fearless and brave hero. He did this by monopolising the war victory and jailing the blood-stained general on framed-up charges. Since that, he employed mass media to develop the myth of his heroism. Remember the ‘Maharajaneni,’ song? The foolish people gulped the myth and it still lives on. On the other hand, cowardly back-door methods like what’s now on to regain power, does cast Mahinda in a very negative light. His heroism isn’t really there when put to the test. The heroic public myth would have expected Mahinda to tell Sirisena that he will opt for elections, fight that,  and win back power instead of resorting to this cheap and third rate spiritlessness. Mahinda Rajapakse is now not a hero but an anti-hero.

Proroguing Parliament  Unethical

The evident lack of numbers in Parliament for the junta prompted President Sirisena to prorogue Parliament for a long one-month period. Even to the ordinary man in the street it is clear that this is done to overcome the numbers deficiency by bribing MPs from the UNP government to cross-over. It is widely reported that Mahinda Rajapakse’s  rich sibling, Basil,  is going round offering portfolios and big money to hungry MPs. Four numbers have already come over, and that includes the former high profile Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe. Wijeyadasa is not in need of money but a portfolio can help him in his astrologer-inspired desire to be President-someday.  He spins his way with utterly dishonest arguments justifying what has happened. He did figure in questionable situations in the Avant Garde episode; social media is still rife with pictures of his close meetings in the home of the chief suspect. In all these pics, Wijeyadasa appears a creepy. Like most political serpents, this man can get away with a remarkable fluency and deceptive charm of manner.

      Thank you Mr Jaysinghe,

Yes, I too noticed that Wijedasa Rajakaahshes has been uttering blatant lies for some time now. THe kind of men with doctorates to do the same job as some low level politciians do in this country is so pathetic.

I wonder why then WR happened to join some public TV discussions and reiterated what they achieved big during the last 3.5 years.

Now the one time sacked minister- WR has proved, he had never been honest with his carrier as MINISTER OF JUSTICE in the MS-RW govt.

These men according to me, should be banned from any kind of politics in tihs country. They are the ones that Doctor titles mislead the other politicians.
These men are just like NILAMASSO found on heaps of excreta. They would never change their nature, how they have been brought up, albeit they are offered with capable position to change the system in this country.
Utterly disgusting men of Wijedasa nature should be removed from lanken system.
Then this country with buddhas blessings can see it forward.

        Dear Sam F,
        .

Contrast with Mangala Samaraweera. I’m impressed by the fact that he speaks his mind, even when, as Finance Minister he has to say that prices have to rise, etc.

      Shyamon Jayasinghe,

RE: Firepower At Kollupitiya In A Mahabharatha-Style War Against Unrighteousness

      Thanks for the write up.

Yes, this a war of righteousness (Democracy ) versus unrighteousness (Totalitarianism); therefore, there is no choice but to fight for righteousness for the People, in the DEMOCRATIC SOCIALIST REPUBLIC OF SRI LANKA.

Sitisena-Rajapaksa have woken a sleeping giant:: Righteousness of Democracy.

Waking the Sleeping Giant- Righteousness and Democracy

The “sleeping giant” in this case refers to the United States of America, (now the People of Sri Lanka.) Hearing it may bring up questions like “how was it sleeping?” or “what does ‘waking’ even mean?” but the phrase isn’t intended to be taken literally. Essentially, it refers to the prod that led to America’s active involvement in World War II.( Sirisena-Rajapaksa Actions) Until the attack on Pearl Harbor, the US had taken a neutral stance. Though it supported the Allies with arms and other resources, the nation wasn’t willing to send its military into battle.

But once the Japanese struck the naval base on Oahu, the sentiment of most of the nation—represented by Congress—changed. The United States awoke from a slumbering state of neutrality, eventually sending over ten million troops to war

Wijedasas should be hung by his balls. It was right that young UNP MINISTERS and MPs stood against the bugger.
He was the powerful minister to have done nothing against Rajakshes s investigations.

Actually, had an another candidate been the minister of justice, things could end up so that Gota and others be jailed for all the high crimes they perpetrated during that episode.

See, the govt came into power promising to serve the justice was caught by his neck since the leader of the govt was a DONKEY.
Now he is in the sarong of Rajakshes.
      He cant do anything.
His power greediness costed his presidency.
Wait and see, this man will be impeached by 150 of parliamentarians within next few weeks.
Gods will punish him to fall to the pit.
We the ones who fought for better srilanka are hurt to the manner, as nothing can help.

Bond scam and stealing Banks are according to you, GREATER THAN the Destruction of Democracy + High profile Family Banditry + Brainwash of lanken youth + Building a Gadafi style Tyranny..

Your stay in UK seems to have brought you nothing but surely something to strenghthen your support further to LANKEN rascals./murderers/tsunami embesslers.Selfish buggers of your nature would never sense it. So sad the olderst democracy to have given you a greener pasture.

yes.they should try to impeach him.only 75 members are needed.overthrowing a government by violating the constitution is a serious offence punishable by impeachment.Attack is the best form of defence in such circumstances.Who attacks more in the political chess game will be the winner.

The Sirisena/Mahinda gang also committed the huge mistake of sending a donkey dressed as a Drummer boy to issue the ultimatum to the opposing King that he must vacate the palace before dawn on the next day. Can some one explain to the Putujjana, whether there is a counter part for this donkey in the Maha Bharatha?

Inspirational piece of writing Shyamon with a perfect comparisons. This war is about what is righteous and not about Ranil. We don’t need Ranil, but the respect for democracy. Who cares about Ranil. Convene parliament and let it decide.

What is wrong with some Diplomats based in Sri Lanka?
The Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations (1961) Article 41 clearly states that diplomats cannot interfere into the internal affairs in the receiving country and such interference is construed as a violation of diplomatic protocol.
Article 4I – I. Without prejudice to their privileges and immunities, it is the duty of all persons enjoying such privileges and immunities to respect the laws and regulations of the receiving State. They also have a duty not to interfere in the internal affairs of that State
Article 41 – 2. All official business with the receiving State entrusted to the mission by the sending State shall be conducted with or through the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of the receiving State or such other Ministry as may be agreed.
If so how come Diplomats of certain countries are breaching diplomatic protocols with their regular demarches against the Sri Lankan Government issuing statements and visiting Sri Lankan political parties, their leaders, local NGO heads, local media etc and often dictating how they should function.
    ——————————
These ‘Para Suddas’ are real hypocrites. They preach one thing and do something else like the mother crab walking sideways and asking the baby crabs to walk straight.

People in this country should be grateful to President Sirisena for exposing the dictatorial behavior and dirty tricks of Ranil in handling affairs in the National Government and how he violated the principles of ‘Good Governance’. Ranil and his Royal Buddies did not care for the ordinary folks in the country. Their aim was to please the international community (USA, UK, France, Germany and Canada), Tamil Diaspora and TNA that helped Ranil to come to power. Although people who elected these guys have a right to know these things, very rarely these things come out. President Sirisena, You did a good job. Sinhalayo will forgive you for the blunder committed in 2015 trusting ‘Chaura Regina’.

      Eagle Eye,
Just to brush your teeth. There was an election to elect local government recently. Do you know that? In that election under the leadership Sirisena got the lowest votes among other political parties. He did not even get 10% of the vote. Is he fit for the purpose to serve as President any more of Ranil is not fit for PM? Who should go first?

Shyamon Jayasinghe forgot that most/all MPs accepted Rs One Million each, from Perpetual Treasuries.
All/most of them sold their duty-free vehicle permits.
Even the supreme court refused to consider the matter – the “justices” are same as MPs.
There are no righteous men in parliament now – only political opportunists.
This is Ma Lanka’s curse – from the time of ‘independence’.

Only a dying and decaying Saimon will equate the tiny stretch of street in front of Temple Trees to Krukestra of the Mahabharata.

The best estimate of the crowd was a 10000 people from the mudukkus around Colombo and there was not a noise (other than fire crackers) anywhere else against this alleged killing of democracy! The country is relieved Saimon, take it to your remaining grey matter (if there is any).

A closer study of the Mahabharatha will reveal that it concerned rivalry for power. Who was good and who was evil in the narrative was decided by the narrator’s loyalties.
    *
Nevertheless, the narrative reveals that many an evil thing was done in the name of righteousness to precipitate a war and win it.
Perhaps a good parallel, although unintended.

Nihal Jayawicrema [A gentleman though] argued, sometime back in an essay appearing in the CT, as per provisions of the 19th Amendment, MaRa could contest for the Presidency again; Apparently, according to his interpretation a bar has not been placed and even CBK could contest. He argued his case on the basis of a loop-hole in the said Amendment. One of the persons who challenged that interpretation,as per Media reports was Wijeyadasa Rajapakse. He went on to elaborate that if MaRa submitted his application,he could be charged, jailed etc etc. This was just the other day.
Now the scoundrel has joined MaRa all over again. This itself is an indication of the quality of PCC, Ministers of Justice etc.etc.
A gutter snipe from Tangalle,he is easily the slimiest politico in Lankan Politics!

Some punnack eating supporters of the UNP gathered at Kollupitiya in an attempt to put back in the saddle the same PM and his cronies who looted the CB within 40 days of coming to power even at the expense over their dead bodies. To send these looters to parliament and to enable them to begin looting once again and for the masses feel the economic brunt.

Mahawamsa chronicles home team waging war against ‘others’. The wars were deemed honourable if the ‘others’ are sub-humans.

Mahabharatha on the other hand is about war between home teams as told by a charioteer. In therapy sessions, the charioteer justifies the use of lies, gambling, duplicity etc., in wars. Some do take this seriously.

“If Sirisena-Mahinda chose to, they would have referred the matter to the courts before their outrageous act of violation “
Perpetrators of crimes never go to courts to get permission to commit a crime. It is the victim who should go to the courts seeking redress . If RW seriously think that the matter is unconstitutional and illegal, he should take the issue to the Supreme Court instead of wasting time in street protests. Why is he not doing this?
The analogy of Mahabharata or the war between Dharma and Adharma will never apply to politicians or political acts specially when it comes to Sri Lankan politics. President JRJ also proclaimed that he was going to usher in a Dharmistic Society when he came to power in 1977. We all know how dharma was practiced during his regime. Mahinda Rajapake still maintains that all activities undertaken during his regime , which would include action taken against the Chief Justice, incarceration of SF, subversion of judiciary, suppression of democratic institutions, high level of nepotism etc. were done in a legal manner and therefore were based on dharmistic principles. If you ask Gotabaya he would swear that all his actions while in power were clean white like the white vans. President Sirisena is fully convinced that saffron clad monks and war heroes are protected species in Sri Lanka and they should be immune from any legal action . Ranil and his foot note warriors will maintain that their role in the Bond Scam was inspired by dharmistic motives. Thus every politician will have his own idea of dharma. In Sri Lankan politics adharma takes various avatars in the garb of dharma.

As you say the Kingdoms prevailed in India before man invented the gun used common sense and Fundamental truth to punish the violators. Getting a doctorate, or getting the power by virtue of antagonizing with fear and anxiety is a recent phenomena which is used in Sri Lanka from the time of independence from the British. The fear and anxiety unfortunately has caused a lot of suffering for the minorities at first and gradually the suffering spread to all Sri Lankans. Instead of upholding the virtue of Tharma as Lord Buddha did, the rulers of Sri Lanka upheld Adharma which benefitted the top rulers for sometime. Because they temporarily enjoyed power without realizing the ill effect of violating the virtue of Dharma a ruler must posses. Look at India during independence and look at Sri Lanka during independence from the 40s. Where was Ceylon and where was India? Now the situation got reversed and Sri Lanka is yet to realize why! Why because the schools in India taught Literature with the virtue of Dharma and the suffering of Adharma to one and all ethnic groups without discrimination in all Languages. Where as the leaders of Ceylon became notorious and started their rule with Adharma. They might have thought being notorious to the minorities will benefit the majority. They were and yet they are not aware Adharma to one by a ruler will result in more suffering to the ruler. I am glad you being a Sri Lankan yourself have learnt the Literature of the past era and is well aware of the follies of Sri Lankan Leaders.

It appears that the educated Sinhalese public are truly worried that Sri Lanka’s democracy which served them well may be permanently damaged by the replacement of prime minister by MR without the approval of parliament. Sinhalese in the bottom rungs of the economy including workers farmers etc seem to like the rule by MR with strong hand. Therefore when parliament is dissolved and elections are held MR will easily win. This is the reason why the department heads, police and armed forces are not willing to defy MR’s orders. It is now clear that RW does not have a chance and the democracy may not survive in Sri Lanka. MS probably may not realise this now, but his days as the person with power are numbered.
