Former Director General of the Media Centre for National Security(MCNS), Lakshman Hulugalle, recently caught in a storm of controversy over an illicit liaison is been treated at the Intensive Care Unit of Lanka Hospitals in Colombo after an alleged overdose of anti depression pills which confidants claim was an attempted suicide.

Hulugalle, also referred to as ‘Hula’ was relieved from his duties as the Director General of the MCNS earlier this month after a scandal involving the transfer of 23 policemen from the Organised Crimes Division who raised a Town Hall casino allegedly run by his paramour. President Mahinda Rajapaksa dissolved the MCNS retroactively from November 1st after racy details about Hulugalle’s liaison with businessman Gamini Nettikumara’s spouse came to light and he was found to have abused his power in a bid to rescue his paramour.
Hulugalle is a staunch supporter of Defence Secretary, Gotabaya Rajapaksa. The former continues to hold his posts as a director at the National Livestock Development Board and the Commercial Bank.
Meanwhile Colombo Telegraph learns that Hulugalle claimed that he had overdosed on several dozen of anti depression tablets. In Sri Lanka suicides rates, although down compared to the 90’s, are still high enough to cause concern, as at least one case is reported in newspapers every week. The Govt. has enough shares in Com Bank to have one of its nominees on the Board, and hilariously he was handling the Corporate Social Responsibility part of the Bank, so that he could get his pic in the papers.
It is time the Com Bank board request the Govt. to appoint someone in his place with an unblemished record of integrity and social responsibility.
It is BAD for the bank to have a proven shady character like this on their Board.

Yet knowing that Netthikumara is from low country, it is not possible to assume that his wife is a common wife enabling the husband to enjoy “Eka Gei Kema”. Now that the social integration in Uda Rata and Pahatha Rata is happening at a very high speed, it is possible to assume that Pahatha Ratiyans have also been influenced by the Kandyan tradition.
