Friends, Sinhalese, Countrymen, Lend Me Your Ears

By Anandaraj L. Ponnambalam –

Anandaraj L. Ponnambalam

With due respects to William Shakespeare, and to be read in conjunction with:

Friends, Sinhalese, countrymen, lend me you ears;

I come to bury the Nation of the Tamils and the People of the Vanni, not to praise them.

The evil that men do lives after them,

The good is oft interred with their bones;

So let it be with the Nation of the Tamils and the People of the Vanni.  The noble Sri Lankan government and the noble Sri Lankan military

Hath told you the Nation of the Tamils and the People of the Vanni were ambitious, separatists and terrorists;

If it were so, these were grievous faults,

And grievously hath the Nation of the Tamils and the People of the Vanni answered it.

Here, under leave of the Sri Lankan government and the rest,–

For the Sri Lankan government and the Sri Lankan military are honorable men;–

So they all, all honorable men,–

Come I to speak in the funeral of the Nation of the Tamils and the People of the Vanni.

They were my people, faithful and just to me:

But the Sri Lankan government and the Sri Lankan military say they were ambitious, separatists, and terrorists;

And the Sri Lankan government and the Sri Lankan military are honorable people.

They (the Nation of the Tamils and the People of the Vanni) worked with diligence and honor

Whose bountiful resources the general coffers did fill:

Did this in the Nation of the Tamils and the People of the Vanni seem ambitious, separatist and terrorist?

When that the Singhalese have cried, the Tamils have wept;

Ambition, separatism, and terrorism should be made of sterner stuff:

Yet the Sri Lankan government and the Sri Lankan military say that they were ambitious, separatists, and terrorists;

And the Sri Lankan government and the Sri Lankan military are honorable men.

You all did see that for 30 years and more, the Tamils took all the slings and arrows without a qualm or retaliation for their just cause of equal citizenship

Through this all, the trust they placed in the solemn agreements, the Banda-Chelva, Dudley-Chelva Pacts and all were broken

Yet the Sri Lankan government and the Sri Lankan military say they were ambitious, separatists, and terrorists

And, sure, they are honorable men.

I speak not to disprove what the Sri Lankan government and Sri Lankan military say,

But here I am to speak what I do know.

You all did live with the Nation of the Tamils and the People of the Vanni once, not without cause:

What cause withholds you then to mourn for them?

O judgment, thou art fled to brutish beasts,

And men have lost their reason.  Bear with me;

My heart is in the coffin there with the Nation of the Tamils and the People of the Vanni,

And I must pause till it come back to me.

But yesterday the de-facto Nation of the Tamils and the People of the Vanni might

Have stood against the world; now lie they there,

And none so poor to do them reverence.

O masters, if I were disposed to stir

Your hearts and minds to mutiny and rage,

I would do the Nation of the Tamils and the People of the Vanni wrong, and the International Community wrong,

Who, you all know, are honorable men.

I will not do them wrong; I rather choose

To wrong the dead, to wrong myself, and you,

Than I will to wrong such honorable men.

But here’s a parchment with the seal of the Nation of the Tamils and the People of the Vanni:

The Vaddukoddai Declaration by which the Nation of the Tamils and the People of the Vanni stood and died, and not in vain but to rise again, as the day will most certainly follow the night!

    Correction – The 9th line from the end should read:

    I would do the Sri Lankan government and the Sri Lankan military wrong, and the International Community wrong,

    and NOT

    I would do the Nation of the Tamils and the People of the Vanni….etc.

    Wonderful idea that the oration could be converted to another such oration.

      Tamils are never happy whatever is given to them. They have developed an ego on account of those mad lot in Tamil Nadu. Tamils in general are peaceful people and want to live peacefully with the Singhalese. However a tiny minority of Tamils are set to undermine the peace in the country. Mahinda and Ranil are two respected leaders. Ranil broke the Terrorists back with peace treaties that resulted in the Tigers losing their momentum and Mahinda finished off the Tigers with military precision and destroying the Tiger Scum lock stock and barrel. Let all those who love the Motherland rally round Mahinda and ensure the country is developed. Also monitor the remnants of Tiger Scum living overseas and ensure they are not allowed to set foot in SriLanka again! Peace to all! Sudu Akka signing off !

    With due respect to Edward de Vere, 17th earl of Oxford:

    To be read in conjunction with “Mahinda Chintana’ 2005

    “Mahinda Chintana Idiri Dekma” 2010

    There comes a tide during the course of war.

    Which, if taken advatange of, leads to victory;

    Omitted, all the maneuvers of this aggression

    is bound in ceasefires and stalemate.

    On such a morass we muck about,

    And we must take advantage when it serves,

    Or lose our ventures.

    Sir we are suwabasa generation. we read ad verbatim. so I look in the dictionary – Cultural Dictionary

    Brutus is an honorable man definition; says:

    “A statement made several times in a speech by Mark Antony in the play Julius Caesar, by William Shakespeare. The speech is Antony’s funeral oration over Caesar, whom Brutus has helped kill. “Brutus is an honorable man” is ironic, as Antony is attempting to portray Brutus as ungrateful and treacherous. He succeeds in turning the Roman people against Brutus and the other assassins.”

    aren’t you supposed to slur your tongue over Brutus is an unhonorouble man sort of?

    It is completely a hypothetical world and they are trying to convert that to a reality.

    #0 years of killings, Tamil or LTTE role in 1983 all trivial.

    Do, they talk ever about what tamils did for 30 years. DO tamils ever talk about how they wanted over and over again morer 1983s by bombing the Dalala temple or anuradhapura temple etc., so many of those.

    One important thing Tamils go nowhere as long as they are dishonest to themselves.

    Because, Tamils talk like saints and hardly I read an honest tamil.

    REMEMBER ROMANS were back stabbing politicians. SO, you say you are one of those.

    Sisira Weragoda: It is a privilege to have been a student of AP in 1972. He is a great teacher, friend and a colleague. Above all he is a humanitarian of the highest order. Sir, it is a privilege to have known you. Let me say “Oba dekmen ma pin kela bave sithini”
