From Rope Bridge To Shipwreck

By Sarath de Alwis

Sarath de Alwis

Sooner or later, bitter truth overpowers bogus bragging. When that happens, truth unforgivingly appears in the form of anger, disillusionment, and utter hopelessness. For an ambitious politician in pursuit of power, metaphor and allegory are provocative ploys. They are designed to persuade the skeptic, mislead the foolish, appease the naïve and mesmerize the class congenitally disposed to resist change, preserve existing order. The metaphor and parable help the politician to survive current adversity in the hope of walking into history with that memorable expression that will mark his brief dalliance with power.

Such metaphors will become part of history for posterity – our children and grandchildren to determine who they really were – simple con artist, audacious clown, or virtuoso ring master.

In May 2022 it was ‘Grusha’ of the ‘Caucasian Chalk Circle’ playwright Bertolt Brecht’s powerful portrayal of selfless universal motherhood carrying baby Michael across the rickety rope bridge.

“I am undertaking a dangerous challenge. In the Caucasian Chalk Circle, Grusha crossed the broken rope bridge carrying a child that was not her own. This is an even more difficult undertaking. The precipice is deep, and its bottom cannot be seen. The bridge is made of thin glass and there is no handrail. I am wearing shoes with sharp nails that cannot be removed. My task is to safely take the child to the other side. I am accepting this challenge for our nation. My goal and dedication is not to save an individual, a family, or a party. My objective is to save all the people of this country and the future of our younger generation. I will undertake this task willingly risking my life if needed and will overcome the challenges facing us. I ask you to extend your support to me in this endeavor. I will fulfill my duty towards our nation.”

In November 2022, ‘Grusha’- the selfless Universal Mother is on board the Titanic that has hit an iceberg.

The Daily FT reports “President Ranil Wickremesinghe describing his accession to power in crisis-hit Sri Lanka as “taking over the titanic after it hit the iceberg”.

“With the bankruptcy that we have declared, our economy has virtually come to a halt. The inflation, the bankruptcy, and everything else that is happening have brought our economy to a grinding halt. How do we restart it? That is what we are engaged in… “

The transfiguration of Brecht’s idealistic rope bridge into the real world of total shipwreck is no accident.

‘Grusha’ was a bedtime story of a speech writer. It fooled nobody. In the final analysis, the Titanic metaphor is a tough hardnosed recognition of the tough truth that calls for an honest conversation with people. It is time to abandon elitism, cronyism, and oligarchism.

Hyperinflation is not a new phenomenon. We don’t need maggots feasting on the rotting carcass of the UNP to initiate us to subjects of hyperinflation, expansion of the tax base or on bolstering the productive capacity of the nation.

Frederic Taylor in his gripping account of the hyperinflation in Germany in the 1920s – ‘The Downfall of Money’ explains what occurs in such disastrous times. “… the country’s wealth was no longer spread evenly among millions but largely coagulated in blobs among the new plutocracy’… “. Capital passed from the slowwitted to the opportunists.

The Titanic sank to the bottom of the Atlantic together with some 1500 passengers. Some made it into lifeboats and to a rescue ship that reached the port of New York.

What really happened to the skipper of the Titanic is not known. As author Wyn Craig writes in ‘The Titanic: End of a Dream “Captain Smith had at least five different deaths – from heroic to ignominious.

We do not know where we are headed. On 2nd November the multitude took to the streets. Those who marched believe that the Titanic cannot be refloated. ‘System Change is about a new vessel. The “Aragalaya is a complex business.

Some demand a new vessel. Some demand lifejackets. Some others prefer lifeboats. Some would cling to anything that floats. The overall demand is to reach land before their lungs get clogged in the wintry ocean.

There is no limit to frivolity. Upright and honest comrades swaying between a Marxist Moksha and a Market with Morals opted out.

A recent mood of the people survey indicates that roughly ten percent approve of the government’s handling of the ship of state. This ten percent believe that the new Captain could restore the Titanic to limp into the port of New York and perhaps reach Washington!

But a near ninety percent of ordinary people remain overwhelmed by disgust and despair. They don’t trust the new skipper. I don’t blame them.

The economic historian R.H. Tawney in his Religion and the Rise of Capitalism makes a remark that should help us to understand the leaderless ‘Aragalaya’ – a phenomenon that succeeded in compelling the resignation of a Prime Minister and an eviction of an elected President.

“Mankind does not reflect upon questions of economic and social organization until compelled to do so by the sharp pressure of some practical emergency.”

Tawney’s observation explains why the government presently in power cannot suppress the ‘Aragalaya’ with tear gas and water cannon. State oppression has its limits.

A cataclysmic economic crisis as envisaged by this economic historian Tawney has forced the younger generation to seriously ‘reflect upon questions of economic and social organizations.’

What they seek is a socially cohesive economic order that treats justice as fairness – an idea that is anathema to the crony class that is entrenched in the current order.

The mass of khaki clad white helmets that intercepted the peoples march on 2nd November was an unmistakable demonstration of state tyranny.

What is Tyranny? I do not know who said it, but it is generally attributed to Thomas Jefferson.

“Tyranny is defined as that which is legal for the government but illegal for the citizenry.”

Gerald Ford is the only person to become President of the US without winning a general election for President or Vice President. He succeeded Richard Nixon who resigned in disgrace. When Ford took his oaths, he summed up his remarkable reach of high office using no metaphor no allegory no parable.

“The oath that I have taken is the same oath that was taken by George Washington and by every President under the Constitution. But I assume the Presidency under extraordinary circumstances never before experienced by Americans. This is an hour of history that troubles our minds and hurts our hearts,”

He told the American people “My fellow Americans, our long national nightmare is over. Our Constitution works; our great Republic is a government of laws and not of men. Here the people rule.”

Today we find ourselves in our hour of history. This hour of history troubles our minds. It hurts our hearts. Our nightmare is not over.

I started this missive referring to political rhetoric of metaphors, allegories, and parables.

Narcistic types use these devises to confuse a hungry, weary people trapped in misery.

These parables of Titanic’s collision with an iceberg and a ‘Grusha’ pirouetting on a rope bridge with an infant in her arms are meaningless inanities neither true nor false.

They fall within the definition of what Harvard’s Professor Harry Frankfurt calls BS on which he has written a slim volume. He claims that there is a lot of BS in public life. It allows the practitioner of BS to exude an aura of great authority, expertise and learning on “events and conditions in all parts of the world” They speak quite extensively “about anything and everything claiming an absolute grasp of subjects they virtually know nothing about.

The liar knows the truth and lies to hide truth. The BS artist doesn’t lie outright. BS artist distorts and deviates. The focus is panoramic and not particular. Dishing BS is not a craft. It is an art. That is why they are called BS artists.

‘Grusha’ held hope. The ‘Titanic’ is a harbinger of more tears.

The ‘Aragalaya’ is about the “Downfall of Our Money”.

    Dear Sarath
Dare I shift the subject for a moment?

Did you, by any chance, see an English production of “The Caucasian Chalk Circle” on the Peradeniya campus, sometime between 1957 and early 1961?
I am CONVINCED that I did, but nobody else seems to have & they add that it was first performed here in the mid-60s, probably at the Wendt. Sinhala.

Did any “oldies” on CT see the campus production?
Maureen Elhart (Dhanapala) & Nanditha Sarachchandra played the 2 main women who had to assert their “ownership” of the child (played by my middle sister) by pulling him from the centre of the circle.
Nanditha is no longer with us. Sunethra S. has no memory of the play; she was very young.
The Dhanapalas wont answer my email enquiry.
And my sister, 9 or 10 at the time, remembers being in it, the circle, etc., but not when.
And I am sure I saw it at Sanghamitta.
    Did anyone else here!?

RW is Washington’s Economic Hit Man, backed by the Force according to Donald Lu!
Today, Strategic Sri Lanka, South Asia’s Richest Country, and Sri Lankans are being RAPED and LOOTED by the IMF, Paris Club and their Sovereign Bond Traders like Black Rock Vulture Fund which are in Partnership with the Corrupt and criminal Ranil Rajapakse Regime which conducted Bondscams at the Central Bank.
Morally and intellectually bankrupt leaders of Lanka are promoting BRAIN DRAIN and talent Drain from the Country, in a Race to the Bottom to enable the West to re-Colonize the strategic island and set up Military Bases in its Cold War on China and Russia. The global reset is all about the west again looting the best brains, talent and natural resources, particularly Fisheries, minerals and Graphene from the Global South, while Weaponizing the South Asia Diaspora .

Sarath: what do you think about the Sri Lankan cricketer who has been trapped by a Honeypot in Sydney to disgrace the Lanka in AUKUS land! The Race, Gender, LGBTQ XYZ Identity politics game is being played overseas too to degrade and distract Sri Lanka and the world from its corrupt US- force backed Ranil Rajapakse regime !
Now the corrupt Ministers are groveling before the Aussie Government which has got the SL Navy arresting SL fisher folks and bullying them in the name of protecting Australia from Human Traffickers from SL.
The SL Navy now works for UNODC and AUKUS who are giving them boats, trips and other handouts to harass the Fisheries communities of Sri Lanka while the EU loots Sri Lanka’s fish! https://www.sundaytimes.lk/210307/sunday-times-2/european-union-accused-of-neocolonial-plundering-of-tuna-in-indian-ocean-434565.html

OC, I think it’s Dinuk way of saying / rambling ” I smell a fish(rat)”. Dinuk sounds better than N. Pererass (right below) who seems to be an expert. Lanka as usual appointed a committee to look into allegation, when they need only NP’s expertise.

OC , Whether it is LGBTQ or XYZ , history is made today where a first black person in Maryland and open gay and lesbian are elected as governors in deep conservative / Republican states including Massachusetts which never had a female as governor before. I guess people look for quality than straight as Rajapaksas in Lanka.

Cricketer Danuska’s involvement is not a big thing. We all know Shane Warne with 4 Thai Girls and died, who knows if he died on top of one Thai Girl’s body? We know how Bill Clinton sent his cigar to Monica Luwisky’s secret place

Manel, I have Thiru Kandiah’s email address (He may have seen the Chalk Circle performed at Pera). If you can post your email here, I can send you Thiru’s email. Perhaps Doric de Souza’s daughters may know about the play, too. I have a contact for them.

Oh, thank u, SJ, how kind of you to go to the trouble….
I wasnt sure if yr earlier post was addressed to me….precisely because it WASNT addressed to me! Or under my post.
Tho I couldnt work out a connection between Thiru & Bill Clinton.
Or did Thiru smoke cigars, too?

I wonder what email address u have for Thiru. He didnt answer the one I sent him asking if he had tel. no. of a very old friend of mine in Australia who was in Pera around the same time, & might ring HIM about the play. Alastair R-C; did you know him? A fantastic actor. He also conducted the choir in the campus Anglican church (which I sang in then, when I was still a believer). We’ve been in letter contact every since but I’ve never asked for a phone no. Recently, I tried to print an aerogram to him that I typed on the computer. It got stuck & now I cant remove it or get the printer to work again! I’ll have to write out the whole thing again in scarcely legible “font”.

Thank you, too, re Devika. Actually, she & my middle sister were “blood-sisters”… actually went to those lengths when they were about 10 or 11 and we lived a hop, step & a jump from them. I even made a few skirts for Devika. I intend to contact her. Just havent got around to it yet.

Clearly you were at Pera. I wonder when & if I knew you. Which hall were you in? We lived all over the campus. But dont worry, I’m not a Sinhala Man — wont try to hunt you down.

Well, I think I’ve taken up more than enough space provided free of charge by Sarath’s article, & with silly personal matter. So better say, over & out.
Tho I might pop up, if not too late, under Sarvi’s latest about the shocking corruption at Jaffna Unvi. From personal experience – tho one removed – at KNU in the 1970s.

I wish he wouldnt be so pushy.
Now what will he post about me!

But I have only just realised that it wasnt you who sent the 2nd response to my long post, but Sarath P. The subsequent detailed posts from me to your shd have gone to him! Oh dear, I’m really getting too old to handle these things properly.

S de A, You finally say that aragalaya is about the downfall of our money. Further, it is an example of the fearless robbery of our national wealth into the family coffers. Truth is not double minded. Owner citizens were deprived of their basic food, water, gas, oil, fertiliser, and medicines which were in daily use without interruption and taken for granted as being readily available. This sudden lack simply brought the population onto the streets in protest. This start was not a political move but an attempt to chase the trouble away. But the disaster is that the majority have now started robbing whatever they can lay hands on, resulting in a corrupt and foul imitation of the leaders. So much is wrong in our society as this robbing without jobbing still continues to plague it. The judiciary is needed to recover from robbers and alleviate the suffering of the masses.

    “portrayal of selfless universal motherhood”?
If motherhood was as selfless as the author suggests, how come the natural mother did not care if the child was torn limb-to-limb?
Brecht had in mind other things. The play had a strong political message as well.

I despair at some of the comments and for the future of Sri Lanka. The endemic corruption at all levels – be it the political class or the public servants is the cause of the country going bankrupt. It has nothing to do with the capitalist west or the country’s imperial past master or the IMF.
Only a fool would think that China and Russia will be Sri Lanka’s saviours or eternal friends. The Rajapakse, the Bandaranayakes and the rest signed for white elephant projects, pocketed enormous kick backs and now China wants to give them another loan to repay the previous loan at a higher interest than before and take Hambantota port as well.
Corrupt corrupt and utterly corrupt and it is in the DNA.

      Yogi
Neither China or Russia have pledged to be anybody’s saviour.
They do give a helping hand amid all manner of charges. It is a matter between the giver and receiver.
What white elephant projects did the Bandaranayakes sign for? Both were very frugal with state funds and borrowed minimally.

If you are seriously interested to know there are two books one on imperialism (Killing Hope: US Military and CIA Interventions since World War II, by William Blum, Zed Books, 2014) and another on IMF (Confessions of an Economic Hit Man, a semi-autobiographical work by John Perkins, 2004, with subsequent updates)
Both are accessible by Google search and make good and serious reading..
You can check and cross check the data. They are well documented and not contested as far as I know.

The fraud is attending the climate change conference in Egypt !

He attended the funeral of the queen and then PM of Japan. He loves this hobnobbing with famous people !

For a moment Ranil does not consider he has no legitimacy to represent this country anywhere and no right to bring any policy to the country.

Some say he is legally OK as the constitution allows it.

Then the law is an Ass. The people rejected him when he contested parliament in 2020. Despite that he shamelessly came into parliament represent the UNP which failed to win a single seat at that election.

Then with the parliamentary backing of the Rajapaksa family he became President !

All these world leaders know what a failure and a conman Ranil really is.

If our globe trotting politicians have attended COP 27, it must have been to learn about climate change first hand. I am sure it is an unknown subject to most because, if I am not mistaken, a politician had commented that oxygen cannot be eaten, in response to protests by environmentalists on clearing a mangrove swamp in Negombo area for a playing field. Deforestation continues, emission testing of vehicles is a joke, industrial pollution & coal fired powerplants are acceptable, so, the most likely outcome from SL’s participation would be to maintain the status quo, just another opportunity for a foreign jaunt at the tax payers’ expense. Was there at least a statement from the Minister responsible for the environment of our pledge to combat climate change? Why do we continue to keep useless politicians with luxury perks?

Sarath, “sooner or later bitter truth overpowers bogus bragging. When that happens truth unforgivingly appears in form of anger , disillusionment and utter hopelessness”. That is what is grief is about, people go through various stages of grief including initial shock, denial followed by anger, bargain, disillusion, depression / utter hopelessness and finally closure / healing, which is not the case in Lankans. 75 years of BS is not that easy to overcome.

Being the eternal optimist, I have now reached the conclusion that the current Head of State is the only
person from the current lot of ‘legislators’ who has the knowledge and the intelligence to steer us through the mess we are in today.

Whether he has the will and the intestinal fortitude to take the on the robber barons in the process is left to be seen. In so doing, he will of course, have to start by clearing out the garbage from his own backyard.

At this time, that is where the Evil politicians draw their energy to label the peaceful protest as unruly brats’ terrorism and be contended as they have gained world democracies’ sympathy & support to use the use the wild & draconian PTA against the protesters. While the world over, the peaceful protests are being accepted as part of democratic way of expressing discontent over their governments, the fascist Langkang governments, almost for a century, is using its war machines over its own citizens, which act itself is an indication of the fundamental defect in Langkang’s democratic model and calling for an immediate overhaul of the complete system. The solution for this deceit of those who betrayed the April Protest is that enough educated and matured persons and the special category, women get involve in stimulating the protest and physically participate too (sans children. Peaceful protest is like any other public event where children can participate with parents; but in Langkang, where people criticize and oppose the government, is interpreted as terrorism, it is unpredictable the safety of children from the Police and Army).

From February 4th, 1948, the Tamils’ future in the country is gloomy. After May 19, 2009, it is the same situation for the entire population- no difference in race, caste, religion & language. The people have been turned out to be orphans without an umbrella called “their own government”. For the past few decades UNP-SLFP cartwheel gymnastic governments have been operating only for the politicians’ self-help. While dictator politicians dividing & fooling the masses to feed their foreign bank accounts with unlimited dollars, masses have become dependent on the sympathy and grace of the foreign governments for refugee status and foreign menial jobs. Important assets of the country which have to earn the future income of youngsters are sold to opportunistic dragons to feast on them, in return for burdensome White Elephants for the taxpayers and commission for rulers. There is nobody in the land who must answer why so many SOEs are sucking people’s money. If any question or complaint comes out on them, then commissions are appointed to investigate them, and cronies suck out the remains from them, but never anybody was held responsible. As said in the above essay, rulers freely hand out the parables, fables, allegories, and bedtime stories, but sing lullabies and divert the attention, when it comes to rice, that is the real thing satisfies their hunger, but does not come even from moon.

From 1948, the Ceylon Royals and Aristocrats have been keeping the ignorant crowds on their yokes and leaches to slave them as watch dogs against any stateman proposes anything good for the country. Now the people must take their future in their hands. The country to return to British administrational norms, like happened in France, the Royals and Aristocrats need to be sent out of politics and the helm of democracy should be handed over to the commons. Country’s election law and constitution are cooked up such a way that only those who are unwanted to people or rejected by people come to chair and claim that they are the angels from Buddha, had come to save the Buddha’s land. Protesters demanded the Royals to leave. But when the Royals were leaving, they handed over the mandate they received in an expired election, to The Evil Emperor. Then Evil said that the people have achieved what they protested for; so then why protest anymore? But later, with the same twistable tongue, he said “pay the tax or stand in the line!” Those were the lines where the protest took its birth. Evil, as he was an absolute aristocrat, never understood why the people were protesting all over the country.

Could Evil leave job as the people who protested and created the vacancy not for him, but he fell on the Royals’ legs (now Royals are falling on the Evil’s leg for a PM job) and stole from protestors. His explaining to hold on to the unearned power is that he came to power by the proper implementation of the constitution, not by protest to oust the elected government, so why should he leave?

The Devil who was hiding in Trinco Navy Camp when chased out of Temple Tree House said he will rise from the ash, again. But this ass one time said the one does fear ghosts will not build his house in the cemetery. If a Devil had built its house on the ashes of its murdered victims, where else would it rise in the morning, other than from the ashes of its victims? Now it’s asking for a PM position so he can come out of the ash, rule and would leave with honor of Dutugemunu, after running away fearing protestors. Isn’t this possible in Langkang because the constitution and election laws are written by elites for elites? This ass can come from any ash, but its self-declared Dutugemunu title is stripped from him in the minds of the masses. (Dutugemunu is a brave, magnanimous, Tamil, Hindu soldier)

Protest is for the benefit of the protesters’ (youngsters’) future, by the protesters. But it need not be carried out by youngsters only. Then why only the younger people get the upper hand here is because of the unique need of this entrapped society. Society is calling for change in culture, the political culture that is needed for society to evolve and stand in phase with the modernizing human societies, out in the rest of world. To attain that political edge, the need to be robust-ic, but by nature, old men like my age and women are stubborn in maintaining the age-old foolish beliefs and stagnant cultures. This is not a shallow or blind campaign for atheism though it has its merits, nor an advertisement to promote reckless lifestyles sold by cinema movies. Here the protest supporters are not putting forward their opinions for or against Marxism or capitalism. Any opinionated dual political & religious contests are only second to the clean and pure object of the Protest- the change in the society’s culture. This is about searching and opening a door to start a new history. That is why the matured men’s and women’s participation will be a powerful campaign in the minds of the international community; they could believe it is a change in culture the Ceylonese community is looking for, not a regime change.

About forty years ago, when Sinhala Theatre may be said to have reached its high water mark, Brecht’s plays were produced by Henry Jayasena.

    .
That’s just eleven minutes of the beginning. It starts with some Lankan villagers talking about who owns a paddy field. How authentic would Brecht have considered this to be?
    .
I saw Henry Jayasena performances of this play at least twice. The second time it may have been at the Peradeniya “Wala Festival” but before that probably in the Town Hall in Bandarawela. Accuracy is not so important here. The question is what was Brecht trying to do, and were these performances in keeping with the playwright’s intentions.
    .
There isn’t likely to be time to discuss all this here. There is a more recent article which has a reference to the play:

I hope that it’ll be considered not inappropriate to further discuss this there.

I’m sorry. The link that gave was to an article where acceptance of comments has already ceased.
      .
This article also discusses the sleights of hand employed by politicians. I hope that my linking you to the entire play of two and a half hours there as well will be tolerated.

There’s much more to be said. The Brecht plays were originally in German, but we studied these plays when reading English in Peradeniya University.
