Parliamentarian Udaya Gammanpila has cried foul over yesterday’s decision by the Constitutional Council to nominate senior DIG Pujith Jayasundara for the post of Inspector General of Police (IGP).

Speaking at a news conference, Gammanpila, said that the Constitutional Council’s decision was both ‘illegal and unethical’ because a member of the Council, who is currently being investigated by the police was also at the meeting to vote for the next IGP.
“Minister Champika Ranawaka, who is a member of the Council, is currently under investigation, and so it is not ethical for him to sit at the Constitutional Council meeting to select the next IGP,” Gammanpila pointed out.
Gammanpila charged that by Ranawaka voting in favour of Jayasundara, it was time for Jayasundara to show his gratitude by sweeping the investigation against Ranawaka under the carpet.
Ranawaka, who is President Maithripala Sirisena’s nominee to the Constitutional Council, is currently under investigation for being allegedly being involved in a hit and run accident in Rajagiriya, which left one person critically injured.

Except in a Kangaroo court, I don’t think, Champika Ranawaka can be prosecuted for the motor bike accident case.
But Udaya Gammpaila evades corruption cases because he did every thing in wife’s name while his wife was home not at all moved anywhere.

For Ranawaka to sit in the Constitutional Council to elect the IGP when he was being investigated by the police is unethical – because there exists a ‘conflict of interest’. The right thing for Ranawaka to do was to stay out of this particular appointment. But Ranawaka is Champika Ranawaka with a chequered past and he is also a Sri Lankan politician. Sri Lankan politicians are corrupt wholesale and don’t give a damn about sentiments such as ‘conflict of interest’.
Gamanpila on the other hand says that the process to appoint the IGP was ‘illegal’. Well that is pushing the issue too far.
