Justifying the deliberate distortion of facts concerning the anti-Muslim riots that erupted in Southern Sri Lanka during a statement by the Sri Lankan delegation before the 27th UNHRC sessions recently, External Affairs Minister Professor G. L. Peiris has explained the dangers of ‘internationalising’ the Aluthgama incident at a meeting with the Muslim Council of Sri Lanka (MCSL).
A press release issued by the MCSL on the discussion between External Affairs Minister and Ministry officials and MCSL officials on July 7 on the statement made at the UNHRC regarding the Aluthgama incident, states that Prof. Peiris while explaining the government version of the incidents that expired in Aluthgama had stated that vested interests are attempting ‘to blow it out of proportion’.
While assuring the MCSL representatives that such incidents will not recur, Prof. Peiris had also warned them of the dangers of internationalising the incident, stating that such actions can have similar repercussions as that of the Tamil issue and the TNA that sought to internationalise their cause.
Meanwhile, the MCSL Vice President Hilmy Ahamed who has issued the statement on behalf of the MCSL says they raised concerns over holding Muslims at fault for the Aluthgama riots during the statement by the Sri Lankan delegation at the recent UNHRC sessions.
The MCSL had pointed out that by projecting a distorted picture on the events that expired in Aluthgama on June 15, the government in fact has missed out on a golden opportunity to assure the international community that Sri Lanka respects the rights of all minorities, that would have had a strong impact on the process that is being moved to carry out an international probe on Sri Lanka.
During their meeting with the External Affairs Minister, the MCSL had also raised objections on the extremist group Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) being allowed to continue its hate speech targeting Muslim community and had also agreed to address certain issues within the Muslim community that were of concern to the majority community.

Ayagama Samitha is the Chief priest of Kurunduwatte Sri Vijeyaramaya, in Dharga Town. There is an article about him in page 19 of ‘Divaina’ on July 6th more than a week before riots. It clearly shows that this monk or the temple has no association with BBS.
On Poson Poya day, (June 12th 2014) Ven. Ayagama Samitha, Chief priest of Vijeyaramaya, in Dharga Town was on this way to a sermon (Bana)in a three wheeler. It was blocked by three Muslim Thowheeds and argument ensued resulting an assaulted on both driver and the monk. The monk was hospitalized and a complaint was made at the police. Police took no action as usual. BBS came to the seen because of that.
Two weeks before this incident, a decapitated Head and the 4 hooves of an Ox was left in front of his temple. A complaint was lodged with the Aluthgama Police and they removed the trash but nothing more than that. Still BBS gad come to the seen.
When ven Samitha was checked out of the hospital on the following day, and there was a reception to receive him at Aluthgama town. Ven Gnanasara made a speech. It is to give moral support confidence to a battered monk and the peace loving majority community that felt insulted.After that Ven. Samitha was taken back to his temple in a procession.
Followed is widely circulated armature video clip covered a part of that procession for a few minutes. Clearly Thowheed that gathered at the mosque threw the first stones to the passing crowd. I am puzzled! GL Peiris being such a veteran in international affairs thinks distorted stories given to outside will not be checked against ground evidence by a responsible organization like the UN. When compelling ground evidence contradict with the Government version of the Aluthgama incident who loses? Not GL Peiris, but the image of Sri Lanka as a country. And it is even more hilarious to ask the Muslims to keep their mouth shut. In fact he should be in a bold position to even ask Muslims to independently verify his statement to UN.
Please, GL Peiris, keep in mind that Sri Lanka is not your private property to play with like this.

Read this report: Sri Lankan expatriates (close to 85000) living in Lebanon, battered by the hard-hitting, abrupt move by the Beirut govt to deny the renewal of visas to their families have sought private legal counsel at substantial cost in a last-ditch battle to seek concessions to remain in the country. “They feel badly let down as the Sri Lankan mission had failed to pursue the matter at govt level in Beirut on their behalf”. 80% are women work force.
I also understand at present two other Arab countries (major players) too are reviewing the situation and if any further violence erupts against innocent Muslims, they too intend to pull the plug and send those workers home.

Lebanon does not have exchange controls, the tourist economy and growth in general is on the decline The influx of Syrians continue reaching a million and they have to be fed housed etc. With Hezbollah firing rockets from the south times are going to be really bad.

internationalizing the issue is dangerous for whom? may be for GLP and his political friends? his advice is that if you are mercilessly attacked do not talk about that locally or internationally. it is only one sided. if GL wants he will meet russians, chinese and iranians and explain what happens. others should not do that.according to him Tamils don’t get anything because they have internationalized their issues.so muslims should not follow the Tamil model.before meeting him muslims should have done their homework.
