Global Tamil Forum Leadership In Crisis, Booed And Questioned Over Secret Meeting With Sonia Gandhi And Financial Hanky-Panky

By Colombo Telegraph

A meeting organised by the Global Tamil Forum, the umbrella organization which is trying hard to engulf all the Tamil diaspora fronts in Europe, North America and Australia, was disrupted and its leaders booed by the participants, Colombo Telegraph learns.

The meeting which was held in London on July7,2012 was attended by activists from various diaspora organizations , such as British Tamil Forum (BTF), International Secretariat of the LTTE, Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam (TGTE), LTTE Head Quarters in London.

Talking to Colombo Telegraph GTF spokes person said “Sri Lankan government agents and some agitated Tamils” were behind this sabotaging attempt. But Colombo Telegraph reliably learnt that people who questioned GTF leadership was Tamil hardliners who want remove its present leadership.

The most prominent activists of the GTF, Rev. Fr. S.J.Emmanuel and Mr.Suren Surendiran were the two organisers who received the most troublesome welcome from the participants in the history of GTF. Both the leaders were not allowed to make any speeches from the beginning of the meeting and so many questions were thrown towards them on various issues during question time. But Suren Surendiran denied the claim saying he made a presentation. ( See the interview below).  Rev. Fr. Emmanuel and Mr. Surenthiran were put in a tight corner with questions concerning their activities like secretly meeting with world leaders like Sonia Gandhi and receiving donations from various individuals and international organisations. Above all, many participants engaged in shouting at the leaders over the press reports that the GTF had welcomed the recommendations submitted by the LLRC to the government of Sri Lanka.

The organisers hired the services of personal security guards to the meeting anticipating trouble from the participants even though the number of participants was limited to 50.

One activist belonging to the British Tamil Forum (BTF) was ousted by the security guards from the venue. He was involved in shouting too many questions at the organisers and refused to co-operate to conduct the meeting. Other participants booed and demanded an apology from the organisers for this action but the organisers refused to budge and warned the participants similar action if they didn’t allow to conduct the meeting peacefully.

One source close to GTF told that this misbehaviour of participants was directed by the BTF people as they were trying to wrest control of the GTF by removing the present leaders from the top positions. Allegedly the BTF is currently controlled by Tamil hard-line representatives in the UK. They are said to be still controlling the monies collected from the Tamils living in the UK and trying to expand their power base in other countries by wrestling the leadership of the GTF.

Suren Surendiran’s explanation;

Suren Surendiran

Q. In the GTF meeting which was held   in London on July7,2012 you and Fr. SJ Emmanuel were received the most troublesome welcome from the participants in the history of GTF. Both of you were not allowed to make any speeches from the beginning of the meeting. What is your response about this?

A. Far from the truth. Father and I made separate presentations, we had a very engaging Q&A of at least 23 questions. However there were also a few disruptions from suspected and known Sri Lankan Government Agents

Q.did you and SJ Emmanuel secretly meet Sonia Gandhi? What was the outcome of that meeting?

A.The GTF has meetings with several world leaders and has scheduled further meetings in the near future. We do not individually comment on each and everyone of them. However when we had mutually agreed, GTF has made several press statements in past.

Q.Did your membership accuse you for that meeting?

A.The purpose of the meeting was to seek feedback from the Tamil Diaspora on our journey so far, on future strategy and next steps in seeking justice for those whose lives were prematurely snuffed out by perpetrators of war crimes and crimes against humanity. Also in the process of attaining a durable political solution which recognises the Tamil peoples’ democratic rights in the Island. This was part of a series of meetings GTF has conducted in Canada, Norway, Australia etc. in the past few months.
People were very engaging in sharing their views and thoughts. As mentioned before, 23 questions is not a small number after two separate presentations. We are very encouraged.

A.Were you and SJ were accused for receiving donations from various international orgs and individuals?

Q.No. The topic never arose from the audience as far as I can recall. As part of my presentation, I highlighted that the GTF receives funding not just from its members but also NGOs and friendly governments.

A. Why did you hire personal security guards?

Q. We had reports that agents acting on behalf of the Sri Lankan government were liable to disrupt it. We conduct our meetings like any professional outfit does and we consider all eventualities.

Q. According to your knowledge who is behind this questioning and misbehavior ?

A. As mentioned before suspected and known Sri Lankan Government Agents and a couple of other genuine Tamils who were slightly aggitated due to misunderstanding of some parts of Father’s and my presentations.

Another participant of the meeting  wishes to remain anonymous gave below explanation;

The deliberate procrastination of Rajapakse regime to find an amicable political solution within the united Sri Lanka is undoing all the “peace” achieved at the sacrifice of many thousands of lives from the both side of ethnic divide. All the blame for attributed to the LTTE armed resistance cannot be blamed on them anymore but on the government as their adversaries have maintained their silence.

During the height of the military campaign Rajapakse regime pledged for Tamil support by promising a political solution more than the 13th amendment. The inaction and inability of the present government demonstrate their preference to seek an agenda for power and support rather than development and democracy

The meeting was continuation of meetings in Norway and Canada and their inputs reflected in this meeting. These sentiments were shared with other foreign governments and foreign ministries as well.

There is hardly any communication between the groups who participated. Many had come there to level accusations against each other rather than discussions on the deliberations of GTF. GTF has been the organisation who was helping hundreds of orphans and children, also many more widows numbering more than thousand more than any charity organisation in the UK.

In support of their charity efforts, another chapter of GTF in South Asia has rallied their government and received one million dollars for their rehabilitation and livelihood support for widows. Further to the support, they have promised to support dollar to match dollar in their future fund raising.

BTF attended with an organised strength to question the GTF even though BTF is the British chapter of GTF. BTF claims the credit for largest march organised during the height of the Mullivaikaal campaign. The legitimacy of GTF was challenged when the BTF was not itself represented in the GTF. The original number of organisation have not continued to pay the annual membership fee and their membership has dwindled to one third.

Tamil diaspora leadership will be in crisis if the responsibility continues to rest with the same who had obliterated many democratic voices of diaspora and trashed many organisations. If these leaders cannot acknowledge the survivors of Mullivaikaal and the organs that lead the Mullivaikaal campaign in the UK, these activists are leading the community into the abyss of self-destruction.

GTF spokesperson claimed that GTF is not just interested in removing the Rajapakses but the system.

When confronted with the frank question, “Has GTF abandoned separate state of Thamil Eelam?” GTF spokesperson declared openly that they will not campaign on separate state. It is an unimaginable exercise to continue a meeting after this declaration a few months back. Hardly any relevant participants responded with any political objection. It is the first time any diaspora organisation of political worthiness has come forward with such objective political agenda. Every organisation that gave up the cause of separate state among diaspora has sacrificed their support base. Unless GTF gain substantial political leverage to achieve their political aspirations, they will be also rejected by the diaspora.

The adopted strategy of four pillars is highly diluted by adopting TNA thinking of GTF. Diaspora is not bound by 6th amendment or 18th amendment. When diaspora is completely kept out by denying dual citizenship with cold reception for political engagement in Sri Lanka, GTF seeks to draw in line with TNA is dichotomy. The thinking of engagement is alien to aspirations of Tamil diaspora but an international agenda. Some attendees called the leaders of GTF as Indian agents and American lackeys. When it was levied against Fr. Emmanuel, the participants unanimously shouted against the minority of BTF members to leave the meeting.

First time, a diaspora meeting in London was conducted with door keepers and/or bouncers. When GTF spokesperson challenged a participant against his anonymous letter campaign, the participant stood up to defend him and when he saw the Security guards entering, called upon them to arrest him and chose to leave the scene willy-nilly. However there was no serious altercation, the concept of employing bouncers to conduct meeting has invited chagrin of the participants.

All the friendly-fire has not harm the participants except the double-barrel fire power of GTF. While the hard-nut seemed to have the fired in all directions like a loose canon, the canonical order has touched on the most sensitive subject – THE UNDECLARED MILLIONS according to his canon law. God bless him for exctricating himself such deadly sins. The culture of impunity has definitely come to haunt the Tamils again and again even though LTTE had shown willingness to testify at the International inquiry. Will GTF and its members demnd the LTTE binamis either to return the money to the donors or use it for the benefit of the Tamils???…
Diaspora seemed to asked many questions but it is clear what they are? However the GTF seems to be listening to the concerns of Tamils internaly and International opinion. Salute for their intentions to find a political solution rather than the puritans of no-relevance!

Many Tamil in London know that these skirmishes were the outcome of the ongoing fight to control the LTTE’s monies and investments worldwide which is said to be yielding an income of US$300,000 every year.

When it comes to power and sharing filthy Lucre, it makes no difference whether one is Tamil or Sinhalese. It is a damn shame for the Tamil Nation, without aiding, abetting and cutting deals with Corrupt individuals as MR, helped by the world power blocks, instead to work with Honest people as RW even now for a lasting solution to the vexed problem.

This is a long story. BTF and GTF are the same. BTF was started in 2006 and GTF was started soon after Mullivaghzal.

BTF and GTF were established by certain Tamils in UK with hidden agenda of removing the LTTE from the Globe.

Look at the members. The members of these two organisations NEVER EVER involved in the LTTE activities in the past. They never ever supported the LTTE.

Ravi who is known as (ROOT Ravi) has his grieviences against the LTTE. He was fired by SP Thamilselvan in 90s and sought assylum in UK. Castro recruited him after 2002. Why Castro recruited Root Ravi? Castro wanted to show the leadership that he is recruiting the old hands. In fact, this was an undeclare war between Castro and SP Thamilselvan. SP Thamilselvan also recruited certain fellows fired by Castro.

Thanam was a wrong replacement for Shanthan in UK. Thanam’s education very very limited and he has no capacity to handle the Tamils in UK. Therefore Castro suggested Root Ravi to help Thanam. It doesnt mean that Root Ravi is an educated person.

Fr Emmanuel is man of Name and Fame. He is ready to be in any camp where ever he can seek his popularity. Late Anton Balasingham has long story about Fr Emmanuel. In 2000, this story was a big joke UK. How can I disclose this joke here!

Suren Surendran is another man of Name and Fame. He never ever supported the LTTE. Before 2005-2006, nobody knows this Suren Surendran. He has admitted this in his popularity seeking interview to the most racist Colomb news paper, the Island.

How he managed to get the contact of the Island is not known to anyone.

Root Ravi’s sister, a medical Doctor is married Suren Surenthiran’s own brother. When Root Ravi was removed from the LTTE by SP Thamilselvan, Ravi’s whole family members went against the LTTE in Vanni and Jaffna. Today they are (pretending) strong supporters of the LTTE.

If we put all these together, BTF and GTF is under the control of Root Ravi’s FAMILY.

There was another joker, Sukanthakumar – Sukanthan was with BTF.

Now Suganthakumar has filed a case in the courts against BTF. Are all these fellows are serious activist for Eelam Tamil to get their political rights in Sri Lanka.

Other fellow is Senthan (Sen) Kanthiah. The most artfull doger in this planet. He wants to contest in next parliament election through Labour party. This fellow is answerable for [Edited out]

Then here and there, there are activists, who wants NEW BLOOD into these scene. Why new blood?

They want people who do not knew the facts about the current leaders in diaspora.

It is a reall mess because of people who wants to sideline LTTE, who wants cheap popularity, who wants to be seen as Leader.

The recent Suren Surendiran’s visit South Africa for the funeral of late Minister was a complete disaster for the Tamils in South Africa, Tamils in Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka. Why? I do not want to the write the actual reasons here. Suren Surenthiran knows everything.

It is not true, South African didnt want to read the message of the Sri Lanka government. This was lie created by Root Ravi’s family.

In conclusion, this is not the path to political, cultural struggle in the name Eelam Tamils. These BTF and GTF members knew nothing about these task!

What happend so far within BTF and GTF is nothing.
Wait and see, what is going to happen in the near future.

Firstly, let these short sighted people go away from these scenes with SHAME.

Then allow any reliable, experience hands to do the work peacefully what they were doing before 2002.

Benedict, as I mentioned earlier when it comes to power and money the scum among Tamils are no different to the scum among the Sinhalese. These shameless characters have no regrets of sacrificing human life for their personal gain. These Tamils have no genuine feelings for the Tamils who are oppressed. They will cut deals with Corrupt MR sacrificing other Tamils for them to be in the limelight breaking bread with MR, helped by the world power blocks.

In certain circul in London, it is known that in early 2000 Fr SJ Emmanuel has asked Anton Balasingham to recommend him for Nobel Prize?

Is this the story Benedict dont want to disclose to the readers.

    This is an old news.

Old days activists in UK are well aware of this story. It was told by Anton Balasingham himself.

Kuhan from EROS is the Treasurer of the GTF

    Donald Gnanakone for Salem-News.com
The secrecy and evasiveness is a little mind boggling.

    Courtesy: dbsjeyaraj.com

(SAN PEDRO, CA) – A Senior GTF official a few months ago confirmed to me that GTF indeed had a secret meeting with Sonia Gandhi. I also have a witness outside of the GTF when this information was provided to me. There is no harm in the GTF meeting Sonia Gandhi considering the fact that GTF President was deported from Chennai many months ago despite holding a valid visa.

GTF met Sonia Gandhi in London for 1-2 minutes at a public function not related to the Tamils, similar to TNA’s former MP Eelaventhan meeting the Canadian Prime Minister and Australian Rajakulendran being photographed with the Australian Prime Minister at the budget meetings with the local media. But the secrecy and evasiveness is a little mind boggling. (See Surendran’s interview).

As for the big funds received and spent, the Treasurer would be able to answer and whether Fr. Emmanuel was aware or not of the bigger amounts of funds received is a question he can honestly answer.

Suren is the spokesman and Fr. Emmanuel is the President.

The Malaysian government provided 1 Million dollars to a Malaysian Tamil charity and as far as I know it was not for the GTF which is a political organization at the time it was founded. It seems it want to be like TRO and K P Regi now and every body knows that Tamil horror story.

I am aware of a few members of the Tamil Aratchchi who were at the meeting in London, who were also expecting that this type of reports would come up. Well it is time for all of us to hear the different sides and different. This is very damaging to the Tamils.

Fr. Emmanuel was the President or director of two defunct Tamil organizations based from Switzerland operated by Anton Ponrajah until June 2009.
That is a dubious past he won’t talk about living in a small village in Germany after he retired from the German Catholic church. Now the poor guy is having his name muddied by association more than action.
There is an old saying, if you sleep with the dogs, you will end of with fleas. The difficulty here is, even I am having difficulty to identify and separate is who are the dogs and who are the fleas.
My advise to Fr. Emmanuel is being eighty years old, he should just go in peace, and salvage his name as a respected catholic priest and not follow his old habits of lending his name with his cassock to organizations such as IFT, CJPD, and GTF.
Tamil diaspora groups also should not make use of the “priest name” or those in “cassock”.
Even on of the founders of TGTE (First X1) in June 2009 was Rev. Chandrakanthan from Canada and his brother Vasanthakumar from London. Paul Wilms was from Holland is another founder member. All are now MIA from TGTE who has a mammoth 134 members of Parliament out of which 35 members resigned. They also have one or two dozen ministers and deputy ministers in addition to Prime Ministers and deputy prime ministers.

If the article and readers’ comments are to be seriously taken,
the Lankan Tamil Nation must realise all sorts of unknown, mysterious
and dubious characters are floating around claiming they are fighting
for the Lankan Tamils. Their best bet would be the TNA – formed of
known, experienced and respected leaders. Responsible Tamil organisations in the diaspora should concentrate in using their influences with the Govts in their own countries of residence to get
the Rajapakse clique to honour their obligation by holding PC Elections in the North – without delay. Such a course of action will also take the wind out of Karunanidhi’s sails in Tamilnadu.

It is believed the Rajapakses want to allow this for their own survival but they are kept back in the fear of a backlash from the Sinhala supremacist cabal within. The various Mahanayakas too are not for a settlement with the Tamils. Already the Malwatta Prelate complains Buddhism has not been given the special place it was promised????? They are more for Sarath Fonseka’s original formulae to make the Tamils a minority by force in the North – as done more subtly and over a period of time in the East. This is nothing but a recipe for further bloodshed, mayhem and the prospects of foreign direct and indirect intervention.

    Agreed with Senguttavan.
But Tamils are not fighting for just the provincial elections in the NP 4 years after the end of war.

The constitution needs to be fully implemented as well, or the Govt. is acting illegally, which they are.

Political solution has to be negotiated and arrived at.
And Rajapakses are avoiding that and delaying any solution.
    PSC is another delay tactics.

Rajapakses have executive powers, military powers and two thirds majority. They can resolve the Tamil-Singhala problem of 64 years,. But they are dishonest, racist and chauvinistic,. That is why all the delay and there is oppression and repression in the NE.

Up Country Tamils do not protest and even for their wages and pensions. Or proper EPF and ETF….Monthly wages etc. Crying shame. Thondaman and his people are only benefiting personal and private positions. Their workers are still in poverty.

Always a pleasant surprise to see the various pro-LTTE diaspora groups falling out with each other. MR & co will be praying that at least one group of fantasists remain to keep the flame of Eelam alive, overseas, so that they can continue to use it as bogeyman factor in local politics.

Here’s a little tip from a biased observer. Try to get just one group mouthing off on impossible demands. Frankly, it’s tedious trying to keep track of this alphabet soup of Eelamist groups, each with its own ever more bizarre and unrealisable demands for Eelam and the rest. Is the TGTE against the GTE or GTF? Who knows?

I mourn the day that the WTF (World Tamil Federation) ceased operations. Did no-one in Eelam think to check the acronym? WTF! :) Almost as good as the equally defunct EROS, no?
