General Secretary of the Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) Galagoda Atte Gnanasara was sentenced to 19 years of rigorous imprisonment by the Appeals Court on four Contempt of Court charges over an incident that took place on January 25, 2016. The sentences will run concurrently and will be completed in 6 years.
Gnanasara
President of Court of Appeal, Justice Preethi Padman Surasena and Justice Shiran Gunaratne announced the sentence this morning (August 8).
The defendant was not present in court at the time and defense counsel informed court that his client had been admitted to the Sri Jayewardenapura Hospital.
The determination was on a case filed by the Attorney General against Gnanasara following a petition submitted to the Appeals Court by the Former Homagama Magistrate and current Colombo Chief Magistrate Ranga Dissanayake.
Earlier Gnanasara was sentenced to 6 months of rigorous imprisonment on June 14 for threatening Sandya Ekneligoda, the wife of missing journalist Prageeth Eknaligoda within the Homagama court premises.
Former Homagama Magistrate and present Colombo Chief Magistrate Ranga Dissanayake, Deputy Solicitor General Dileep Peiris and prison officers filed statements against Gnanasara Thero.
According to spokespersons of the BBS, the determination has already been challenged in court.

But this gentleman from an originally Christian, highly respected family – some of whom now following the Buddhist faith – can chose where and whom he prays for, including a much-venerated Hindu Temple in India. Religion is a private matter – commercialised and devalued in this country in the last many decades. When ex-British PM Tony Blair converted to Catholicism recently, the decent and liberal British public did not lose sleep over this. The British were far tolerant to make this an issue – social or political.
Years ago when I visited the Blue Mosque in Istanbul years ago, I fulfilled my wish to offer prayers in and from a major Muslim mosque. I was pleased to learn a few years Muslims in Toronto – invited and opened their Mosque to those of other faiths on a particular day. Yes! this was at a time when there was much anti-Islam feeling in Canada. I suspect the walls of pettiness in all major religions will, sooner than later, collapse giving way to the freedom of religion and thought.

The monk, Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara, leads the hardline Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) or “Buddhist Power Force”, which government ministers and Muslims have accused of stirring up violence against Muslims and Christians, allegations he has denied.
The court sentenced him to six years’ rigorous imprisonment over a 2016 incident when Gnanasara interrupted a court hearing on the abduction of the journalist, Prageeth Eknaligoda, in which military intelligence officials were accused.
He shouted at the judge Pakaya, Ponnaya and lawyers because the military officials had not been given bail, and threatened Eknaligoda’s wife.
“The convict intentionally committed the offence to undermine the judiciary,” Preethi Padman Surasena, the president of the court of appeal, said in delivering Wednesday’s judgment, adding, “Found guilty of all charges beyond reasonable doubt.”
The monk was convicted on four counts of contempt of court, receiving terms of four years each on the first and the second counts, six years on the third and five for the fourth, all to run concurrently.

In my view, hooligans of this kind should not be lifted upon a pedestal by giving them a lot of publicity. My guess is that he is now seeking publicity and will now say “See! These guys won’t even let a hospitalized patient alone after an operation”. Now, I understand that a person admitted to the prison is examined whether he is fit to serve his sentence. If not, he is not admitted and papers are sent for a presidential pardon. Well! If that happens that is something to talk of and for us as citizens to ponder whether there was an abuse of the system.
