Secretary of the BBS, Galagoda Atte Gnanasara, currently serving a six months prison sentence with hard labor for verbally abusing Sandhya Ekneligoda, the wife of missing person Prageeth Ekneligoda, could lose his status as a Buddhist monk, according to Prof Medagoda Abhayatissa Thero.

Speaking at a media conference at the Sunethradevi Pirivena, Pepiliyana, Abhayatissa Thero said that according to the disciplinary texts, the Vinaya Pitakaya, a bikkhu who spends seven days out of the robe can lose his status as per the rule cheevara vippavaasi (residing out of the robe).
The Thero pointed out that in other instances bikkhus that were found guilty of transgressing established laws were punished but never forced to remove their robes.
Gnanasara is currently donning the usual garbs of prisoners, commonly referred to as ‘jumper suits’.
Abhyatissa Thero called on the Mahanayaka Theros to intervene immediately to deal with what he referred to as a deliberate conspiracy to disrobe Gnanasara through the above mentioned technicality.
Meanwhile an unnamed organization has put out posters in Colombo calling for a protest outside the Fort Railway Station at 2 pm on June 18 (Monday).

If I am the President, the moment I hear the jail term, I issue a pardon for the sake of Buddha Sasana irrespective of the name of the Thero. The President who saw a jailed terrorist as a normal innocent man, didn’t see the “robe” going to a prison.
And I don’t believe Somarama is a Buddhist Priest. I think he used the robe to carry out the assassination. There is no comparison between the two cases.

Parajika: These days we hear about Parajika frequently concerning the RG affair. What is Parajika? A Buddhist monk (male or female) is required to disrobe voluntarily or can be forced to disrobe by the Guru monk or the Sangha organization that ordained him for becoming Parajika. (defeated).
The four transgressions which incur a Parajika, the penalty of automatic disrobal, are as follows:
1. Having sexual intercourse.
2. Stealing. (Today it would include manipulation of bonds)
3. Killing a human being, including, inciting another to convincing a woman to have an abortion.
4. Falsely claim one has realised a Margapala (high spiritual attainment)

That is the reason why Ghanasara paid visit one behind the other to Malwathu chapter. As it is like අබ කැව මිනිහගෙ මොලය දනියි.. – uncivilized Ghansara knew his misbehiavours was like putting a drop of COW dung into a pot of milk. Nevertheless, his attitudes could not be tamed by lanken shaky law and order systems. Politicans close to him abused him as no other. One of them is Gotabaya.
Ghansara enjoys the public attraction. THat has nothing to do with his buddhist behaviour but wwell with connected to his child-adolesence growth. He should have gone through untold problems in his person. Else, nobody could become that aggressive the way the monk has often been.
Thanks to him, society is so abusive too, so that he would not see his repeated mistakes. Not once but several dozens of times, the abusive creature lost his temper as no other. Not even wild animls would behave the way how he once behaved himself in the premises of sacred kelaniya Temple. All in all, the man has to face it. I dont think this would have been sufficient. But truths will guide him to all ends. People – the majority were against the abusive monk. But Edwins and Champawithies as usual would do thei rjob for the politicians agendas. Wait and see how the saga will end up in coming days.

I particularly condemn the way that Minister Thalatha Gunasekara answered questions by the media on this issue. She justified everything that has been done to Rev. Gnanasara and brought examples about Somarama. What Thalatha does not realize is that whatever that was done to Somarama was done during the rule of the SLFP, our own indigenous party. On the other hand, the British treated Kudahakapola Himi better by allowing him to keep the robe.

A Buddhist priest fighting for the rights of our Army is not a disgrace upon Buddhism.
We have many Buddhist priests in our history eg: Ven. Wariyapola Sri Sumangala Thero who pulled the British flag which had been hoisted before signing the Kandy Convention in 1815 and re-hoisted the Sinhale Flag. And the same Buddhist priest saved Sacred Tooth Relics from the British. Later the Thero was imprisoned.

Law of the land should be same to everyone. It does not matter if the person is a Monk, a Priest or a Mullah, the law is same. If anyone protest against the decision of the courts, the accused can petition to a higher court. But if any public, any other monk, any other MP or Minister condemns the courts or the Judge then they should be taken before the courts for disrespecting the courts. This is the utmost duty of the President, PM and the Minister of Justice as they are the guardians of the Law of the country.

In this regard this person Galabodaatte Gnanasara, it is reported has changed his life inside prison in two ways. (1) He has refused any “visitations” and (2) He has started teaching “Buddha Dharma” to other prisoners. Very encouraging and pleased to know how he is changing. That “Refusal” to receive visitors is very note worthy, in that, he would have “Realized” immediately entering the prison that all that “Suffering” was consequential upon the association he had all this time with his “Supporters”; “Sponsors”; “Communal Bigots”; Hoodlums” and in summery all those “Balayas”. In that “Teaching” to prisoners, he would have “Realized” the BEST form of service to the NEEDY is to bring the most deserving to the “Correct Path”. Good START and I look forward to address you in a NEW FORM as a true REVERENT Galabodaatte Gnanasara. But always remember that Great Teaching: “Asewanacha Balanag”. If followed, you will SUCCEED.
