Gota has attracted praise for his handling of the Covid-19 crisis. A largely hortatory outpouring is Sarath de Alwis said: “Although I have written plenty opposing his politics and quest for the presidency, I (am) happy he (is) president in this hour of peril”. He makes a valid point that had cockless Ranil been in charge the nation would be at sixes and sevens and clueless Sira would not know the difference between a virus, a viper and a windscreen wiper. But whether it was latent in SdeA’s message or not (probably not) there is a feeling doing the rounds that Lanka needs a strong man with an authoritarian appetite, who like Singapore’s Lee Kuan Yew, can take the nation by the fetlock and deliver order, efficiency, financial integrity and economic nirvana. Felix Dias Bandaranaike’s “A little bit of dictatorship is a good thing”.
This is incorrect, not because of personality defects in Gotabaya Rajapaksa but the predicament and political environment in which he finds himself. I am not an admirer of LKY, he was not a liberty-loving democrat, but he did not flout the law though he did craft it harshly. I will leave that to one side and enumerate LKY’s achievements. He built strong, law driven, impartial institutions. The Singapore judiciary is admired and the city state is a sought-after venue to settle international commercial disputes. It is unimaginable that LKY would hide CID files, transfer officers to prevent them giving evidence before court or interfere with the Attorney General. Singapore is renowned for the competence and efficiency of its public service, a great institution building achievement. The supremacy of the civilian state, PM and parliament over the armed services and police is total, absolute and unquestioned. There is zero tolerance of corruption. If a public servant or a police-military officer is found guilty of graft or human rights violation, heaven help him. In Sri Lanka we have a legacy of the opposite type.
Then there is LKY’s determined advocacy of ethnic equality. Racial, religious and linguistic prejudice is dealt with sternly. The mad yellow-robed mobs inciting Sinhala-Buddhist extremism would, in Singapore, be rounded up and locked up as soon as they start ranting. Singapore did have a head start in pluralism because of its small size, compact society and quickness in adopting English as its lingua franca. But this latter did not come easily; there was a period of struggle, dispute, prevarication and reform before its education system became preeminent in Asia. Furthermore, Singapore society is meritocratic, ours is nepotistic and founded on cronyism. Gota does not have the will or the ability to reverse this.
There is not a chance in heaven or hell that Gota can achieve anything like this. I do not intend to take the micky out of him personally. Even if one imagines he is a damn fine fellow, he can’t. The cards are stacked too heavily against replicating similar institutional feats in the politically opportunist, ethnically charged, financially corrupt and religious extremist milieu that constitutes our society. Let me name three of the challenges: Will Gota be able to kick out the corrupt rogues all around him and install a Cabinet free of rogues inherited from the Mahinda era? Will Gota be able to tame Sinhala-Buddhist extremism to which he is under obligation for placing him in power? And third, if you grant even for arguments sake that some top military people should be indicted and prosecuted for human rights violations, can Gota cut off his right hand?
Even with the best will in the world the LKY experience cannot be replicated in Lanka without cleaning out the Augean Stable of our body-politic. The fight has to be joined mainly in the mass political domain, not within the domain of statecraft. This is the principal domain, issues within government and state are of a supporting nature. There are five political outfits in the majority Sinhala South; GR-SLPP, MR-SLPP, Ranil-UNP, Sajith-SJB and JVP-NPP. This is no time for shilly-shallying; you gotta throw your weight behind one and only one. To my mind it is crystal clear that it has to be the JVP-NPP. The other four are part of the problem, not the solution, and are in cahoots with each other. For example, the MR and GR regimes and yahapalana, that is three governments, have made no progress in convicting the murderers of Lasantha, Ekneligoda, Thuddeen, the students on Trinco beach and the aid workers. Why? These four leaderships are all in cahoots with each other.

The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) today said that based on the experience from Hubei, China, “It can be technically assumed that at present, 550 infected individuals are circulating within the population.”
Issuing a situational report, they said 101 cases were confirmed by today (25) while 32 of them were among those who arrived from abroad and sent to quarantine directly and 69 from the community.
The GMOA said an estimated 550 possible patients would have had a total of 19, 000 contacts.
“Nineteen Thousand of our population may have been exposed to this disease condition, and they are now under the observation of Medical, Military and Administrative structures,” the report said.
If movements freely take place, without social distancing, one individual can infect 500 others within 30 days. Within 50 per cent social distancing, one individual can infect 15 others. By 70 per cent social distancing, the ability to infect others is 2.5 per one infected person within 30 days, the situation report added.
Thus if the citizens of Sri Lanka follow through with the health advice that is given, we can assume that there will be a favorable outcome in the subsequent two weeks.

When one looks at how other world leaders are dealing with COVID-19, Sri Lanka’s president ranks among the top two, namely Russia and China other than Sri Lanka.
He must be given credit for the work he is doing. He is dealing with this pandemic in a better way than even the way he dealt with the 30-year LTTE war.
Even though a US-Sri Lankan dual-citizen, I am for once, very proud to be a Sri Lankan. If one looks at it objectively with Mr. Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, Sri Lanka finally has a future, even though it is 72 years since independance.

After a very close meeting between Gota and Ranil Gota even mentioned that Ranil was like his brother. Though Ranil is still the leader of the UNP which is one of the oldest political parties in Sri lanka he is now working against his own party trying to sabotage their chances of winning to help the Rajapaksa’s win the forthcoming Parliamentary elections by a two third majority to change the constitution to rule the country for many years to come. Ranil was given a golden opportunity to transform the country like Singapore and be like their great leader LKY unfortunately he became too greedy and his association with the Rajapaksa’s has further marred his reputation beyond repair and could eventually bring his downfall at the next General Elections this year…

It’s true DK has posted many articles criticising GR. Obviously he does not have a good opinion of GR. In this instance it is worth looking at the arguments he listed to make his point.
LKY was the first ruler of independent Singapore. He used high handed methods to suppress ethno nationalistic tendencies. He had a strong sense of justice and he did not want the country to fall into anarchy. He ensured that rule of law prevailed at all timed.Therefore ethno nationalism never raised its head like here. It was always kept in control by the Singapore government. With hindsight you could say Singaporeans benefitted immensely and the majority community benefited more from this forced racial tolerance than the minority ethnic groups.
Sri Lanka has completed 72 years doing exactly the opposite. Ethno nationalism was the main issue in all the elections. The signs are that the coming general election will be fought on ethno nationalistic issues, by the main stream parties. I hope that people look at the points raised by DK and not the person who raised it.

Biography
Of Sri Lankan background, H. L. D. Mahindapala has published in English. He edited the Sri Lankan English language newspaper, the Sunday Observer and also edited the Daily Observer from 1991-1994 . He was President of the Sri Lankan Working Journalists’ Association. He gained a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Melbourne and has written some biography as well as criticism. His first poem was published in the London Magazine, and his reviews and feature articles have been published in the Melbourne Herald and The Age.
Let shope him the best at his LAST BREATH…. he is now in his early 80ties and his hatreds have made him blind forever.

Gota can never be another Lee-Kuan Yew for various reasons:
1) His own brothers will not allow him to act independently as Mahinda especially will ensure that Gota does not become more popular than him.
2) Gota’s track record is bad, especially internationally. Although he had the opportunity to turn this around in the last 4 months he has taken no action. SL’s withdrawal from UN resolution and appointing retired Army to various positions has added to his being looked at as a Dictator.
3) He has not been able to keep his promise to the voters even for 3 months, that he will be a “President for all”. Now he has become the “President of Pohottuwa members”.
4) As in the past when he was the Defense Secretary during which time 27 prisoners were targeted and killed inside a prison, this time under his Govt 2 Anuradhapura prisoners were killed and 4 others injured. A Prison is always considered to be a very safe place. Ranjan Ramanayake when he was released on bail, first thing he spoke about was the dangers insider the Prison. There was shortage of staff. Gota never took any notice of this. Even if the prisoners started trouble, they are not animals, they are humans, they have human rights that has to be protected, especially when they are inside a Prison as they cannot protect them selves. Inside the Prison a prisoner is a ward of the Govt. Govt is responsible for their lives. This is going to be a major point that will be taken up at the next UN session.
5) We have seen the Sinhala Buddhist Deshapremies attack foreigners holding major positions. Gota appointing his American Brother Basil to head the food distribution is another black mark.
6) Prior to the Presidential elections he signed an agreement with Maithripala for SLFP to have 30% candidates in the general election.

There is nothing remarkable that Lee Kuan Yew did, other than let English be the compulsory language for all public schools, and let the less productive Malays go their own way. Yes, it is as simple as that. Keeping in mind that Malaya had multiple race riots, which is what led to the birth of Singapore. Singapore has always been under one-party rule, so “democracy” is an alien concept. Chinese are atheist to the hilt, so no religious fundamentalism. At the same time, they have no respect for the environment. Bat soup!

A related issue here is Basil Rajapakse. He attended the all party meeting with MR yesterday. He was then appointed to handle all the emergency purchases of food and supplies.
In what capacity was he assigned this vital responsibility? He was not a parliamentarian in the last Parliament. Not appointed as a Chairman/ Director of Govt purchasing arm. Moreover, Basil and entire family are US Citizens.
Those who campaigned hard against MCC and US intervetions are silent about handing this national responsibility to a US citizen.
One can argue he is qualified- having earned a name as Mr x percent. Surely he can quickly supply any item as long as the bill fits.

I say, it is fully worth giving the present president a very strong govt which can overcome the inept, ineffective, incompetent and crooked parliament. Over the decades the Parliament has become a waste place to which criminals, fraudsters, drug lords, liquor shop owners, business mafias are functioning at full throttle while neglecting the voters.
Sri lanka has a humongous social injustice. Even Kumar David says, less than 8 Sq. KM, city state, a society without a culture, without a long lasting civilization, only a business oriented society – created after the the 2nd WW I suppose is the role model for sri Lanka. None of these who praise Singapore do not have any attachment to Sri lanka. Their philosophy of upbringing is from foreign cultures. Fortunately, muslims are not in this camp and they are just watching it.
Sri lanka is 65.000 Sq. KM. Singapore can not talk about anything that Majority sri lankans talk in Sri lanka. Singapore had money. Recently, some one wrote how Singapore also has peaked and now is going down. I personally know some Singaporeans are moving to the west.
It is Ranil and Yahapalanaya that jailed over 70 bhikkus, in some cases for months, while Zaharan and Wahabi gangs, rishad Bathiuddin and Hisbullah who established the first Islamic Sharia University in the name of a saudi arabian king (while there are no universities established in the name of sinhala kings) left untouched. Ranil’s yahapalanaya could not arrest eventhe vanathavillu wahabis who were keeping 100s of KGs of high explosives..
There are no kings or leaders in the world who did not have to kill it’s own citizens because of violent rebellions and atrtfempts to overthrow the kingdom or the democratically elected govts. So, Kumar David, in that case, does not talk even like one who has some intelligent or reasonable thinking.
