The security detail provided to former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa will be changed from military to STF, Defence Secretary Karunasena Hettiarachchi announced today.
The pruning comes just days after the military personnel provided for former President Mahinda Rajapaksa was replaced with police personnel.
Accordingly, the 50 military officers who were providing security protection for Gotabaya Rajapaksa, will be removed and replaced with STF personnel.
It is reported that former president Rajapaksa has a security detail of 256 personnel.

SF has played his part in the war. yes, there is no denying that. But the war existed for 3 decades, and SF was there in the army before GOTA came along to appoint him general with days before his retirement (a fact that SF denies now, lying to the face of the public, even though he said something entirely different in 2009). It was through GOTA’s management that the correct people were appointed to do duties that they were best capable of. He found the right man for the job, isn’t that what was required of him? Now, we’ve all seen the footage where SF claims there have been war crimes (white flag incident) in an interview. He came to the election threatening the government of revealing the said war crimes. This was a time when Sri Lanka was under pressure from international forces. The only way to shut him up was to put SF in jail. Do understand that the allegations against SF was brought “AFTER” the election and not a word of it was said before the election. They made a special press conference to say that even though they found frauds connected to SF, it was not ethical to bring them to light just before the election. So why do you think they put him in jail, after the election ( when MR won with such a majority) if not to shut his mouth about the white flag incident? I’m not saying its exactly right, because obviously there have been some amount of war crimes, and it is painfully obvious that prabakaran was executed, not killed. Then again, two days before the end of the war, Ranil suddenly went to Norway (Ranil said he was going on a business trip). There were rumors that he was working with the diaspora to make sure prabakaran was spared so the LTTE may live on. They executed prabakaran before the diaspora could do anything to get him out. The government couldn’t say anything about the white flag incident without incriminating itself, which Mangala and Ranil made full use of to slander the government through SF’s arrest. SF was a war hero, but is he doing what a war hero should be doing now? couple of weeks ago he said in parliament that an international probe should be brought to investigate the war crimes, that there has been war crimes in the latter part of the war. according to him, it happened because he wasn’t in the country in the last few days and people in-charge went behind his back to murder prabakaran. is that what a responsible general should be saying in public? as the commander of armies, his words should be chosen more sensibly.
My point is SF isn’t a saint in this. His lack of political awareness was taken to full use by batalanda Ranil. Ranil uses such tactics from time to time (when his election hopes are bleak), after all, he did the same with MY3. MR gave SF full presidential pardon, a fact that I don’t see anyone pointing out.
A lot of people, and i mean a lot, (including myself) refrained from voting in the last election, because they wanted to teach MR a lesson in humility, because his son’s heads were too swollen. They all regret that decision now. All things aside, you can clearly see the difference (unless you are especially ignorant) in how the country is run. Everyday its one protest or another, everyday all we hear in the news is how SL is facing an economic crisis, everyday yahapalanaya speaks of one drama or another (where is all the money which MR supposed to have stolen? panama papers revealed a different story, bad time to be a supporter of Patalie champika :D), everyday its avant guard or lasantha or thajudeen. Even you should be able to see that the present government is ineffective.
I should reiterate, i’m not a fan of the rajapaksas. For a lack of a better alternative, he is better than what the present government has to offer.

The theory this fellow and his aiya need heavy army security because of the LTTE threat is all bull. The LTTE is long dead and the capacity of its few remaining activist cadres to launch attacks is negligible. Of course, thrusting an unnecessary 61ft massive giant Buddha Statue in Nainateevi/Nagadipa is bound to inflame the local Tamil people. This provocative idea is to crudely remind the multi-racial Tamil speaking people in that part of the North they are a captive population – which causes much unnecessary tension there right now.
MR should not be given any more security than what he allowed CBK in the last few years of his misrule. Gotabaya should be given the very minimum. Hope the present government with the support of majority good Singhalese(except few modias – wherever you hit a dog it will lift its leg) settle a reasonable solution for Tamils to look after their own peaceful life. LTTE made few unaffordable mistakes – one of them is the way dealt with India and other brother groups. India was concentrating mainly on taking revenge on LTTE and missed the goal. Even US missed the goal by side-tracking LTTE but it is not too late – LTTE is gone but war crime is still there. Now the best option for US is to side-track Delhi and deal with Tamilnadu straight. President Sirisena had been extremely generous to this family. Even though MR lost the elections to Sirisena and then became an MP he was afforded a coterie of 256 personnel to give him security. What did MR do to the former presidents and the candidate who lost against him. First CBK was rooted out of the party and her security as removed.
Fonseka fared even worse. Not only his security was removed, he was dragged out of his home in the dead of night by his own junior officers and thrown in to jail. That is what Rajapkse did to his predecessor and his challenger unlike Sirisena.
