A mainstream Sinhala language daily today carried in its front page, a story quoting Gotabaya Rajapaksa currently in Singapore allegedly recovering from his heart surgery. The headline read “I am well now: Will be ready for Presidential election as soon as I return to Sri Lanka”.
Gotabaya is said to have gone through an Open Heart surgery in Singapore was ‘mandated a six week rest period’ following the procedure. This was stated by PC Ali Sabry when his client was a no-show at the first hearing of the D A Rajapaksa Museum trial on June 19th.
Given Gotabaya’s health has failed him to a level that he cannot even fly to Sri Lanka before the end of the six week period, it is confusing as to how he will enter and keep up with the stress of being at the center of a presidential race.
He had told the MP delegation led by Prasanna Ranatunga who visited him in Singapore, that he will not back down and will face any challenge.
The Court granted permission for Gota to travel overseas for medical treatment with effect from May 24 until June 2.
However, through a special motion filed by PC Sabry on June 3, the Court was informed his client was unable to return to Sri Lanka as mandated by the Court, due to having undergone heart surgery in Singapore.

Hypervariable region I showed a higher polymorphic variation than hypervariable region II. Nucleotide diversities were quite low and similar for all ethnicities apart from a slightly higher value for Indian Tamils and a much lower value for the Vedda population compared to the other groups.
When the total population was considered South Asian (Indian) haplogroups were predominant, but there were differences in the distribution of phylo-geographical haplogroups between ethnic groups. Sinhalese, Sri Lankan Tamil and Vedda populations had a considerable presence of West Eurasian haplogroups.
About 2/3rd of the Vedda population comprised of macro-haplogroup N or its subclades R and U, whereas macro-haplogroup M was predominant in all other populations.
The Vedda population clustered separately from other groups and Sri Lankan Tamils showed a closer genetic affiliation to Sinhalese than to Indian Tamils. Thus this study provides useful information for forensic analysis and anthropological studies of Sri Lankans.

From the phylogenetic, principal coordinate and analysis of molecular variance results, the Vedda occupied a position separated from all other ethnic people of the island, who formed relatively close affiliations among themselves, suggesting a separate origin of the former.

Why do you get so exited about this meaningless racial issue when the S/B dominance in SL is an unequivocal fact? There is no reason to go into Raj Somadeva’s history lectures to learn the obvious fact. History, of course, is very interesting b’cos it, if studied properly, tells us how things came to be over time but, it is important to learn the fact that history is a poor guide to resolve modern issues. For example, S/B is the dominant race both historically & numerically but, under modern democratic socio-political values, such a fact cannot be used to deny HR of any individual who may have become a legal citizen just yesterday. That is also the message of Raj, if I understand him correct.
One more point about Raj”s methodology: It appears that he understand the difference between old method of linear progressive approach (ladder) vs “bush” approach which was first introduce to historical sciences by Evolutionary biologist named Steven J Gould in 1977. However, Raj’s narrative seems to follow the linear progress approach he says don’t agree with. I’m not suggesting that his narrative of SL history is wrong; rather, I suspect that he has ignored at least two other possibilities of cultural change: 1. Ethnic continuity with cultural change influenced by outside; and 2. Changes in both in waves. The archaeological Raj presents can be used to prove all three models with equal trength!

Sri Lanka may be the only country in the world where majority native community has to work according to the whims and fancies of two sets of minorities. The first consist of the descendants of slaves brought to this country by Portuguese, Dutch and British colonial rulers from Malabar and the second, descendants of Muslims who came to this country as traders and who were given refuge when they faced slaughter by Portuguese rulers. For example:
• When Sinhala which has been the official language until British changed it to English was made the official language after colonial rule ended, Demalu demanded Demala language also should be recognized as an official language. Majority agreed.
• When the Government introduced the Sinhala letter ‘Sree’ to car number plates, Demalu opposed. So ‘Sree’ was removed and letters of ‘Para Sudda’ were introduced. Demalu had no problem with the letters of ‘Para Sudda’. What an unpatriotic bunch.
• When Demalu said they want to sing the National Anthem in Demala, Sinhalayo agreed.
• When Demalu said they want to keep ‘Thesawalamei’ which is a Malabari customary law brought to this country by slaves, Sinhalayo agreed.
• When Muslims said they want Shariah Law, Sinhalayo agreed.
• When Muslims said they want ‘Madrasas’, Sinhalayo agreed.
• When the President said 19th Amendment should be scrapped, TNA and Muslim Congress politicians say they want it and Sinhalayo will allow them to keep it.

When Gota was handling the Tiger issue many criticized him but he did the job. Today innocent people get massacred but there is nobody to take responsibility.

He is supposed to have had open heart surgery (I didn’t know he had a heart) conveniently coinciding with the first hearing of the D A Rajapaksa Museum trial on June 19th. I can sense his acolytes whipping up the gullible and emotional vote base already.
IF he is permitted to contest the Presidential election, he will start the campaign rounds with his ‘frail heart’ and the chances of a dramatic heart attack most probably on a stage, are very real. With the sympathy vote in his favour Gotler will be singing his way to the Presidential chair.
