Gotabaya Rajapaksa And His Bala Sena

By Tisaranee Gunasekara

“Is there no asylum safe enough from your insane and blinded fury?”Schiller (The Bride of Messina)

Gotabaya Rajapaksa was the Chief Guest at the opening of Meth Sevana, the Buddhist Leadership Academy of the Bodu Bala Sena (BBS). In his speech Mr. Rajapaksa said that he decided to attend the event “after realising its timely importance”; according to him, “these Buddhist clergy who are engaged in a nationally important task should not be feared or doubted by anyone” (Sri Lanka Mirror – 10.3.2013).

Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s decision to publicly associate himself with the BBS is of inestimable significance. Anti-minoritism is the creed of the BBS, cowing the minorities its raison d’être. Igniting an anti-Muslim Black July seems to be its ‘nationally important task’. When the über-powerful Defence Secretary, the man who controls the police and the military, gives a character certificate to such a violently divisive organisation, it is not a happy portent. Even before Mr. Rajapaksa’s decision to bare his links with the BBS, its lay and ordained enforcers were able to break the law with near total impunity. After Gotabhaya Rajapaksa’s ringing endorsement, not a single police/military official is going to lift a finger either to restrain the BBS goons or to save their victims.

The transformation of the police from spectators to enforcers of the BBS illegal and unethical deeds is already underway, going by media reports. “After the discussion the Secretary of Defence today (13) ‘not only the removal of the Halal logo, the entire process is done away with it and the police has been directed to attend do the rest’ the Convenor of the Bodu Bala Sena, Galagoda Aththe Gnansara Thera told …… ‘Our doubts were all cleared during our discussion with the Secretary of Defence’ the Thera said. ‘The removal of products with the Halal logo from the wholesale market would have taken three years according to the manufacturers. It is not practical to wait that long. The police have been directed to remove these products from the wholesale market’, the Thera revealed. The IGP has been instructed accordingly”[i].

If accurate, this news portends a future in which the BBS will be able to wreak havoc at will, with active police/military backing – until Gotabhaya Rajapaksa decides to withdraw his patronage. The Rajapaksas are addicted to using and discarding. Eventually the BBS too will be marginalised into insignificance. But until that day dawns, it can cause limitless and irreparable damage to Sri Lanka and all her citizens.

The BBS may or may not be a Rajapaksa-creation. But it is hard to believe that it could have become the behemoth it is, in just 10 months, without Rajapaksa patronage. In today’s Sri Lanka, in order to get ahead and thrive, one needs Rajapaksa backing, be it in politics, business or other fields of endeavour. Had the Rajapaksas wanted, they could have nipped the BBS in the bud. The Siblings do not hesitate to ignore, restrain and even threaten the topmost Buddhist priests, when it is in their interests to do so. If they allow the BBS to run amok, it is out of choice.

The BBS, knowingly or unknowingly, is starring in drama of Rajapaksa making.

Under the auspices of President Rajapaksa, his brothers and sons are competing with each other to build up their own fiefdoms, within the overall dynastic project. Basil Rajapaksa is the ‘Development Czar’; the Divineguma Bill was aimed at expanding his fiefdom. Namal Rajapaksa has ‘Tharunyata Hetak’ and ‘Nil Balakaya’.

Gotabhaya Rajapaksa is indubitably more powerful than either Brother Basil or Nephew Namal. He effectively controls the military, the police and the UDA. The militarization of civil spaces is being undertaken partly as a way of maintaining his relevance, post-war. In post-war Sri Lanka, his power has remained undiminished. But what he can do with that power has shrunk drastically, outside of the North and the East. Of course there are white vans and other extra-judicial activities. Of course he remains the most feared man inSri Lanka. But in the absence of a discernible enemy and a manifest conflict, apart from lording it over North Eastern Tamils, his most prominent public role has been that of the chief park-and-exercise-track-builder and the inaugurator of the Ranaviru Real Star.

Perhaps the BBS can change all that, and enable Gotabhaya Rajapaksa to play the hero again, by giving the Sinhalese a new enemy? If the BBS can conjure a half-way credible ‘Islamic threat’, Mr. Rajapaksa can don his warrior-guise again and find some real uses for the unlimited power he enjoys in his brother’s country.

LTTE, BBS and GR

InSri Lanka, several political entities have claimed the sole representative status of their ‘chosen people’, chosen on the basis of primordial identity – ethnicity/religion. The LTTE made that claim on behalf of the Tamils. The Rajapaksas make that claim on behalf of the Sinhalese. The BBS has taken over the JHU’s banner of ‘the sole representative of Sinhala-Buddhists’.

The perennial search for enemies undertaken by such entities does not stop with the ethnic/religious other. It often turns inwards, targeting those of one’s own race/religion who refuse to accept the worldview of the self-anointed ‘sole representative’. The Tigers considered anti-Tiger Tamils to be an enemy on par with (and at times even greater than) the Lankan state. The Rajapaksas often reserve their most vicious ire for those Sinhalese (the ‘anti-patriots’ according to the Siblings’ lexicon) who refuse to become their acolytes.

The BBS is no different.

When the All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama (ACJU) announced its compromise solution to the BBS created ‘Halal problem’, several senior Buddhist priests lauded that decision. Prominent among them was the scholar-monk, Bellanwila Wimalaratana Thero who stated that the BBS is not the sole-voice of Lankan monks. “He noted that in any community there are extremists, fundamentalists and other elements. Bellanwila Wimalaratana thera said that the Buddhist clergy in Sri Lanka do not want to create a conflict between communities” (Colombo Gazette – 11.3.2013).

At its Maharagama rally, BBS livewire Galagoda Atte Gnanasara Thero heaped invective on those Buddhist priests who disagree with the BBS’s extremist vision and divisive antics. After a violent verbal assault on Muslims and the Ulemas[ii], the monk turned his venomous-attention on moderate Buddhist priests: “There are some Buddhist monks who are like those evil forces. They have the robe round their shoulders. But these fellows just lack the cap of the Muslim man. They sit with those capped men and are creating unlimited impediments to our attempts to build this nation….. Do not allow room in the temples for these unethical/immoral forces”[iii].

Vellupillai Pirapaharan could have had a de facto Eelam on a platter. But he wanted to win a de jure Eelam on the battlefield. That extremist path brought him to an ignoble death. The BBS is not content with its ‘Halal victory’. It wants to inflict ever greater humiliations on Lankan Muslims. That extremism will cause its undoing, eventually. It ignominious fall may undermine its patron Gotabhaya Rajapaksa (and his brothers); or not. But its toxic life will indubitably bring disrepute, dishonour and disaster to the religious-community it claims to be the sole-representative of.

A clarification: I am not back with the Sunday Leader. The paper is carrying already published material, with strategic cuts.

Great Stuff Thisaranee! Keep it coming!

The Rajapassa motto is DIVIDE, DISTRACT and RULE the Sinhalaya modayas.. By perpetuating ethno-religious violence, the Rajapakse brothers distract the masses from the economic debacle and the family’s looting of public wealth that is on going at this time..

Psychopath Gota the white van goon and his Balu sena are the nastiest of the dirty Rajapakse family that can look forward to a war crimes trial in the Hague sooner than later..

IT is sad to see blind people like you who do not smell the reality. Tissaranee is correct in her assessment. It is sad the the opposition is sleeping. They should inform the public that the UN resolution is really against Gotha not against the government or Sri Lankan masses. He is the one who ordered the killings. Now he is the one who is supporting the Bodu Bala Sena, which I like to call Balu Bala Sena due to its unethical conduct.

One is not surprised to see Thisranee’s treacherous comments against anything and anybody supporting Sinhala Buddhists. She thinks so highly of western cultures, she startes with a quote from a western tragedy. Look near to home Thisarnee for Sinhala culture I am sure there are many suitable quotes that you can choose from. May be she thinks a quote from one’s own culture would not be sufficient to show off.

Please turn back to the history of Sri Lanka to see that when the Sinhala Buddhists were persecuted by the colonials ot the Kalu duddhas of our own country who turned against their own Buddhist and culture, it was always the Buddhist Sangha who came to the rescue of Sinhalanation. From the days of Rev Hikkaduwe Sri Sumanagala who fought against the Colonials to Rev Athureliya Rathana who started the challege to the LTTE and opened the eyes of Rajapakse regime unify the country , we have been blessed with the Buddhist Sangha to act at the the right time. Bodu Bala sena is also a blessing which has arisen at the right time under the patronage of Rev Kirama Wimaljothi and Rev Galaboda Aththe Gnanasara to open the eyes of not only the Sinhala Buddist public but also of the current rulers of the country.
It is high time that BBS raised their vioce and become the driving force for Buddhists as the Mahanayaka’s are to comfortable in their seats in Kandy to do anyhting for the Sinhal Buddhists. Dear Thisarnee, when you come up with this type of treachorous artciles, it reminds us of the famous words of Rev S Mahinda thero ” AS GEDI WALALTA HENA GAHALADA SIHELUNNE”.

        Sinhala voice:
Pray tell us what “sinhala culture” is. Does it include killing twelve year old children and making out that they are some latter-day Elara?
You and your ilk will get the fate that is awaiting you and don’t forget that Sri Lanka is a very small island and you will have to swim a long way, particularly if you want to avoid India which is next door!

Your affinity to Sri Lanka’s equivalent of the Klu Klux Klan is only too obvious and, rather than write under a pseudonym you should cloak yourself in a white sheet. Oh, but then that would be the wrong colour even if it gave you an appropriate philosophical complexion!

I have just one question. Do the Rajapakses realize the real harm they are inflicting on Sri Lanka or are they so short sighted as to be ignorant of the consequences of their actions? Surely they realize that even though pitting one community against another might help them to hold on to populist votes, the country itself will be hurt irretrievably?

The problem is people of the country – better said the blind sympathisers of Rajapakshes are being abused by opening new airport, road constructions or the like fooling those innocient masses. Those innocient masses are villagers that make up over 60 % of the population. They only rely on news telecasted or broadcasted by state media. No matter anything wrong would have been the case, they would not want to go against Rajapakshes. Opposition is not poweful enough either to make these masses better informed the ground reality if the country would be governed in this way, the impact of this for the folks and the country in the near future…..

All these are red herrings. Which country is not being developed today ? It has been a global process. Even far reachable african and latin american states are seen to be devleoping rapidly today unlike in the past. Unbearable problem is that the funds of the poor people have been abused to the levels that have been no other times in the past. None of the opponents views are being respected. JVPers are silent and UNPers are made silent…. we are in a crisis to the eyes of IC.

With open of the new airport, MR administration will count more votes next days, Our folks are not learnt think properly.

There were days, that premadasa held so called Gama udawa projects that wasted millions of funds that he could better invest in the education or other areas for example. But today, the levels that the current regime have been carrying out loose billions – people cant survive the levels of cost of living that we ve been experiencing today. ..

Indians see the matter properly, but they have more internal crisis with tamils in Tamilnadu. Their problems are huge than that of tiny island – SRILANKA. Right at the moment, India is not at all happy about the way lanka is governed.. many are in the opinion, Rajapakshes have become to the level to call them – authoritarian family.

But it is the case that GR is trying to be behind all the wrong doings behind BBS, me alike people would start hating the man from this day on.

Now this is a cold war on ideals. Who will control Buddhism, The south or the Central is the key points to ponder?

Now that the BBS is trying to control the minds of the common Sinhala youth by intimidating in petty matters on the minority to win a substantial support for a greater ambition to implicate the revived phlosophy of a New Lanka Buddhism. The showdown will not stop here, until bringing chaos among the real torch bearers of Buddhsim to implicate the Old Buddhism (probably ‘Mahindayana’).

The interpolation of new thesis and ideals of NeoBuddhism is just in the making.

Tisaranee says: ‘The BBS may or may not be a Rajapaksa-creation. But…The BBS, knowingly or unknowingly, is starring in drama of Rajapaksa making.’

This reminds me of what Prof. Gananath Obeyesekere said,
referring to the July 1983 riots at the end of his essay
‘The Origins and Institutionalisation of Political Violence’
(in SRI LANKA IN CHANGE AND CRISIS, ed James Manor, 1984).

‘Contrary to Tamil opinion, I do not believe that the government actually organised the riots [he is referring to July 1983]; rather it was organised FOR the government by forces which the government itself had created, albeit for other purposes. Perhaps the government is still unaware that this many-headed monster which it created may destroy not only its creator but the entire democratic fabric of Sri Lankan society as well.’

I wonder if Gananath would be able to ascribe such a ‘limited’ role to the present government in a future analysis of what may happen here very soon.

As they say: ‘A picture’s worth a thousand words’.

        Dear Prof
Forgive me but I couldnt resist a gentle laugh when I read yr piece – & tho I loved the joke it’s not that I’m referring to. An elderly English friend who used to live here (married to an SL) used to collect examples of ‘carrier’ for ‘career’. She said we (SLs) just cdnt pick the right ‘C’. Even today our English papers are full of ‘carrier’ when the writer means ‘career’.
Hope you’re not offended by this. – manel

Two weeks after the July 1983 pogrom,at a well attended meeting at the Ramakrisna Mission Hall at Wellawatte,President J.R.Jayawardena said that members of his own party planned and carried out the pogrom.
      He expressed his regrets.

Most of the rioters of July 1983,carried Voters’ Lists which they could not have obtained without official sanction.
The trigger for the riots was the decision by the government to bring the bodies of 14 armymen killed in jaffna,to Colombo for a “public” funeral, knowing well that this would incite people, which was sufficient for the mobs who were ready and prepared.

Justice — in fact tho this is the first time I have heard that JR made such a claim — my own belief, all these years was just as he has said & you have expanded (trigger, diabolical decision to have a mass funeral in Colombo, voters’ lists etc). When I first read GO’s conclusion years ago, I think i more or less dismissed it. I quoted it now in the light of Tisaranee’s remark, but also, despite believing that certain politicians (with or without the top guy’s assent — or prompted by something like ‘Who will rid me of this upstart priest?’ sort of thing – Henry of Beckett) grabbed hold of just that trigger (Matthew as we know being one of the most visible), re-reading GO made me wonder if the situation was more complicated than I had thought.

      • 0
        0

Perhaps the hardliners in the UNP pushed JR into allowing the mass funeral? I have heard a Senior Muslim Minister say that at times it was impossible to sit around the same table with some of his cabinet colleagues, because of their racism.

There were many many strongmen in the UNP then, some of them might have thought of the political mileage of having a show, Panditharathne, Lalith, Gaminii and Cyril Mathew, were among the usual suspects I would think!

The fear of Islamic values driving people insane in Sri Lanka. What has caused the Buddhists who have lived with the Muslims for centuries to fear them? Have they bought into the Islamo’phobic propaganda instigated by the undesirable elements of the Buddhist society? Do the rulers of Sri Lanka truly believe that the encounter with the Tamils have been a resounding victory? Is complacency and the illusion of winning takes them to the next level of creating another conflict with the Muslims? Does the country need another set back socially and economically? Can they afford it? Middle East countries will revisit the existing arrangements of Sri Lanka’s food import into their countries and their visitors will think twice about vacationing. A group of High Net worth tourist destined to Sri Lanka preferred to visit Langkawi. Publicity, Confidence and Security are the cornerstones of a successful nation. A Recently concluded Food exhibition estimates the Halaal produce demands to exceed AED 7 Trillion. Can Sri Lanka lose out on its market share? Sri Lankan was a land of people who smile. Now it is fast becoming known as a people of vile. It takes only one person to set fire to a structure built by a thousand people. All peace loving Sri Lankans should get their priorities right if they are to survive the next decade in creating employment and trade opportunities.

If BBS is a product of Rajapakshes,

the unexpected problems raising in the name of Halal food – created by Rajapakshes. This can be the reason why they kept quiet all the weeks in which lankens muslims were repeatedly attacked by lanken media. Having lived on the west for 1.5 decades, GR should have known better how it was in the US, when it goes with food categories and the related issues.

What they the entire current regime still needs to learn is to respect every human beings with great respect and dignity. So long Rajapakshes learn this, healing of the wounds of the war will stay as if the incurable disease.

As repeatedly, added to this and other forums, need of the hour is to learn how to get on with fellow citizens treating each respectfully.
This is not an easy task if they themselves become aware of the degree of the problems. The educated should be given the place to work accordingly in analysing the problems.

            Halal Meat

If Muslims would like to continue their cultural and religious practices they should be free to do so. However if they impose Halal meat on my diet, definitely it is unacceptable and should be resisted to the hilt.

My only disappointment is that animals are unable to reciprocate the same Halal act on Human. In this regard some animals are more civilised than the human.

            BBS

Fundamentally Tamils and Sinhala Buddhists are racists.
LTTE, JVP, BBS, JHU are historical products of racist Tamils and Sinhalese.

There is nothing really surprising about the advent of BBS.

We are all racists one way or another. But, racism is Bad when we treat others inferior to our race, we call it pride and ignorance.

Thanks NV.Let’s hope common sense prevails if
there’s any.No way Muslims can impose their will
on a community nearly 12 times more than theirs.
No questions that Muslims are largely a business
community and any form of attack on them is,to
cause damage to their businesses and also there’s no
question that they are a peaceful community in our
country with all other communities. I’ve read many
times on this forum that Muslims are peaceful because of
their numbers.Yes,true but what about others in the same
shoe? The attackers are racists as you said, whoever they
are. This govt is a sanctuary for rogue politics and they
are dependent on it.Yesterday Tamils, today Muslims and
tomorrow it is definitely Sinhalese themselves. There are
enough stuffs for racists to explore in a society that
has cracks on all its walls and even on their very
foundation. In the last local council election,Colombo
Muslims made it very clear,a slap on the face of even the
prince Naamal that Muslims stand by UNP.Tamils plus Muslims
plus traditional Sinhala green vote base is a real threat to
Rajapaksa Kingdom in future elections.Rajas are now on tiger
tail.Hold on tight come what may and even thinking of leaving
              it is,nightmare.

Why Kathankudi is being transformed into an Islamic Republic?

            • 0
              0

Native,it’s a timely and good question and to give
it a detailed answer you need a huge space but i’ll
try to make it as easier as possible.Personally I
won’t be proud of Kattankudy being transformed into
what it tries to look in terms of its religious
              appearance or practice.Traditional Islamic practice
that allows and promotes reasonable mingling with other
cultures is what’s needed to build better understanding
between communities. To be a Muslim you don’t need to be
an Arab from head to toe.Prophet Jesus was not an Arab
are we Muslims not required to respect and accept him
a prophet?Muslim leaders and religious figures must
confront what’s emerging in Kattankudy head on and put a
stop of further spread to elsewhere. Not only Kattankudy
Native, many parts of the country are in the hands of
              various kinds of extremists.Kiribathgoda,Kadawatha,Gampaha
and many towns in other Sinhala dominated areas are no go
for Muslims. All this BBS shouting is nothing new or sudden
development. These are results of long term gradual
cultivation of the SLFP led coalitions. If anything suspicious
or wrong encouraged in any part of the country,we have
law enforcement bodies to deal with it and subjecting the
law to ridicule in public through third party is neither
              religion nor democracy.Only anarchy.Thanks Native

Gamini say…….”how I long for that reality with every passing day”

I hope both of you saw how Gen.Sarath Fonseka was carried out from his party headquarters on the shoulders of Govt.forces, when they raided and arrested Gen.Fonseka at his office.

Was there a single Army personnel came foreward to rescue or fight for Gen.Fonseka then…….No.

There is no place for real patriots in Sri Lanka now, but only buffalo soldiers working for crooks, drug and Kasippu dealers, commission kakkas and Gamblers.

This is the present state of our armed forces.

But very soon Rajapakses will find their destiny through elsewhere and it’s going to be nasty.

Do you think what you dream will be a reality…..I doubt….Not the way you dream but may be through elections.

When there is communal strife in a country, and a minority belonging to a different religion is picked on, it does not help the situation when one of the countries Minister of Defense opens an office belonging to the now known rabble rousers and trouble makers. He should have at the least, denounced the so called trouble makers belonging to this group, chastising them for the turmoil going on in the country.

His participation in opening this building says a lot, his silence on the entire matter, together with the President, say even more.

We are on the way to a Taliban like society, where minorities are attacked for how they practice their religion, and the majority are told they should have unlimited children (who feeds those mouths?), and what should be taught at daham pasalas. Again, this must be endorsed by the government, or else why the silence and mild inaction.

WHAT MATTERS TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC IS NOT WHAT HIS EATING PATTERNS ARE but how he behaves as a CITIZEN and G servant. If he is deliberately trying to create new problems among the religious folks by introducing BBS or any other radical movements – anyone who respect the dignity and the life should rise against.

I dont mind whether he is a vegetarian or non vege man, so long he behaves to a manner that the folks are not harmed. Some says, white vans are placed by him while others confirm Balu Bala Sewa (BBS)are under his guidance.

Even Hitler AND Gadapi had good sides too.The man GR has good principles when it goes for keeping colombo cleaner for example, but he is not a candidate to play good politics. Latter has been proved many a time sofar, he is not at all smart enough to give a peaceful dialogue with foreign journalist without becoming aggressive.

Like he has been, anyone who has lived on the west for many years can contribute to the projects specially focusing on recycling, urban cleaning, building flats for the shanty dwellers and the like. Perhaps, some who stay mum today may have much better ablities than GR. Just trying to grab the power and just handle every matter as they are their own assets, should NOT be acceptable by anyone.

Today the situation in the country, before the folks – is like a wound that CANCER not heal off easily. It is that complicated as a cancer. As indians point out, Rajapaskhes have taken over the country. Many other powerful nations accuse them of not being serious with human rights. So just leaning on socialists – trying not to resolve the problems one by one, could bring the island folks much deeper.

Further silence of most respected buddhist clergy (not the BBS or bodu balu sewa ) and other religious leaders make it difficult peace loving people to feel secure in this country today. For what should we have buddhasasana ministry if it cant react properly ? there are all sort of bodies int he country just being limited to the names.

Sorry to pick out one wee point from your contribution Jay, but please enlighten me about Hitler’s good side.
And true what u mention of one or two things GR appears to have carried out (tho I think shanty dwellers have yet to see inside new homes and H only knows how they will survive till them, but have you ever tried walking on the zig zag pink pavements with yellow tiles running along the middle of them? I have & tho i only wear low level slippers, lots of women negotiating wear heels & hate the multiple grooves. i wonder what the rationale was.

Please check this if you wanne to know more about Hitler and his other side. Even brutal leaders have good sides. So, I look at all these being outside of the country.

        http://voices.yahoo.com/the-other-good-side-adolf-hitler-2380727.html

At least the stupid folks that easily be manipulative praise the work of GR, while they themselves are making efforts very people to hate some genuine figures that even sacrificed everything in saving the nation. One minister himself reiterated on the TV recently, that SF is being ignored by masses today- there the rulers made very efforts when looking back. It was the most injustice happened to SF by the current rulers. There are a large bunch that have then been criminal but they live scot free. How can Rajapakshes then explain their way of ruling to have rendered the best they can. Today, the due credit for no more war in the country is grabbed by Rajapakshes thorugh false and unjustiable propaganda. People´s mindsets have been fed with innaccurate views, alone the fact that UN resolution and the root causes for them all – have been misinterpreted by them again and again – this is easily done with stupid folks but not easy on the west.

Bodu Bala Sena and the Boru (fake) Police
    C. Wijeyawickrema, LL.B., Ph.D.
I cannot remember if it was in the 1960s or 1970s that a civilian volunteer police force was created in Ceylon/Sri Lanka. Each big police station had a volunteer police support group. In Panadura, I can remember we teenagers called it Boru Police (fake or false police). I can understand it now as an idea similar to the present day village protection force, one of whom for example, one day saw the conman Sakviti’s wife walking on the road and reported it to the regular police. The real police that I saw as a child was a constables wearing kakhi shorts working hard to please others higher in rank starting with those above the constable. Later in my life I was able to find out that it was semi-slavery system for lower ranks until in 1971 the JVP uprising made numbers more important than the rank. Stupid JVP youth from poor families killed poor constables instead of kidnapping SPs or ASPs in which case police constables would have been at least in secret sympathy with JVP rebels.
We were told then that police does not have each of the attributes they were supposed to possess, namely P (politeness),O (obedience), L (loyalty), I (impartiality), C (courtesy) and E (efficiency). By the 1990s police lost any remaining respect and dignity when SSPs were deployed to guard the BMWs of crook politicians. Today, people are so scared to step into a police station that so many crimes go unreported. Politicians corrupted police so much that an honest officer cannot be a happy police officer. The society is corrupt so much that I heard a story that policemen now ask bribes (jarava) saying they too have to find money to pay for their children’s tuition classes. In a country based on fake and faking, the biggest joke is to have the Ashoka Dharma Chakraya as the logo of police department. It was like JRJ had a postage stamp with the phrase, “Dharmista Samajayak.” JRJ, R Premadasa and CBK produced the most unjust periods in the country’s history. I hope MahindaR will prevent his name also getting into this category of failed rulers as he came from a village.
A good police service is a gem for a country and a community. I heard that Scandinavian countries have the best police. Police corruption is found all over the world and poor people suffer from it most. In America police is a city service and the corruption in most city police is shamefully high. In a way in Sri Lanka police service is more important than health or education services. Police also got caught with the JRJ-promoted capitalist system where big fish eating the small fish has become the norm. Add to this the fear of death people had for 30 years, hidden in their subconscious making them so selfish, competitive, greedy and suspicious of everything and everybody. Moral values are in serious decline. The outward manifestation of this unrest in mind can be seen in the case of Buddhists by the rush to build new Buddhist temples or planting Buddha statutes in street corners or free food and drink places during Vesak. Defects in inner spiritual quality are expected to be covered by an exhibition of external material objects and loudspeakers chanting pirith.
This societal decay is a direct result of destruction of Sri Lanka by Colombo-based politicians for the past 60 or more years. It became a crisis after the bahubootha constitution of JRJ and the new system of elections. Now no respectable, decent citizen can become an elected member of any political unit. The behavior of MPs in parliament, both government and opposition makes one sick. The entire country is ruined by this political party system and each day is a step toward indiscipline, more corruption, more crimes and sex crimes. Both government and opposition parties are responsible for this. In this crisis situation, Christian evangelists, Taliban-type Islam agencies, NGOs wanting to break Sri Lanka are busy in harvesting clients.
Police can be a valuable, admired service. But it will take time and an overhauling from A to Z of Sri Lankan society and politics. I can think of at least one historical attempt of police and civilian cooperation. In the 1940s Ven. Kalukondayave Pragnasekara Maha Nayaka Thero joined with Justice Akbar and the young ASP Osmond de Silva to form Village development and crime eradication societies in the island. It became so successful that the establishment (ruling black-white elites) got very upset, and did everything to cut off police from villagers. The ASP was transferred from region to region. When all that failed, Osmond Silva was sent as head of the police training center at Bambalapitiya so that farmers cannot meet with him. This was also the time young Marxists were in the Malaria eradication work, but they did not support police-people community work sponsored by Buddhist monks. A temple is more effective than a police station in social rebuilding and healing.
This is what minister Keheliya Rambukwella (KR) did not know when he made an arrogant statement that if Bodu Bala Sena organizes an unofficial police, the official police will arrest them. He needs to know that official police has become a boru police, via corruption and inefficiency. Except for the Defence Ministry, all other government entities have become false units filled with political catchers and incompetent workers. Compartmentalization to provide job slots to MPs as ministers has gone to an extreme making Sri Lanka cabinet a joke in the world. Agriculture, trade, education for example, cannot be efficiently managed as so many separate ministries. Buddhism ministry is a joke when you see video examples of thieves roaming in cities as Buddhist monks. Archeological Dept is another curse when ancient Buddhist ruins are bulldozed by businessmen supported by non-Buddhist politicians. The method justifiably used by MahindaR to overcome the hurdle of not having a majority in the parliament by giving ministry jobs as bribes to opposition MPs has now made MahindaR a prisoner to crooked politicians who in fact opposed Mahinda Chinthanaya in 2005.
It is because of this predicament of the MahindaR administration in general and the decline of Buddhst values in particular, that the Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) is announcing that people must become unofficial police officers. It said its mission is to clean its own land (spoilt Buddhist values) first, but if one wants to eradicate Dengue others lands also enter into the picture. Most government agencies are corrupt or bias against the Sinhala Buddhists, they are acting knowingly or unknowingly against Buddhist interests, NGOs are mostly non-Buddhists and systematic Islamic and Christian unethical conversions work is rampant with international dollars, and therefore Buddhists must be even more vigilant. If KR thinks he can stop this, he must be still living in the pre-2005 anti MahindaR era that he later gave up. KR subsequently played a big public role in winning the war against Prabakaran, but peace we now have is not real peace for Buddhists and Buddhism.
Retired geography professor G. H. Peiris in his book, Sri Lanka: challenges of the new millennium (2006), at p. 357, indicated the growing militant trends among Muslim youth in the Eastern Province. This is similar to what the late professor Tennakoon Wimalananda pointed out in the 1960s against Tamil DMK activities in Sri Lanka which the then PM Dudley Senanayake decided to ignore. The Halal issue is the tip of the Islam-Arabic-Taliban iceberg in Sri Lanka. Willing to bend over backwards to get Muslim votes to stay in power KR did not want to follow rules of reasonableness. Do we in Sri Lanka need Halalization? Do we in Sri Lanka need facial masks in streets and public schools? These are not human rights issues. These are Sri Lankan Sinhala Buddhist heritage protection related peaceful coexistence issues.
BBS said at the Maharagama Conference that it does not want to have a conflict with the government and it will not support any political party. BBS also says on its website that it is not for violence. Buddhists have enough examples of taming others: Upatissa Damanaya, Nalagiri Damanaya and Angulimala Damanaya. The best evidence of BBS words and actions come from youtube videos. The Colombo Telegraph showed a video against Ven. Gnanasara. Buddhists do not think monks are saints. They make human mistakes. The incident shown was a conspiracy to provoke him. Why would expressway leaving exit gatekeeper detain a vehicle for more than two hours because it had a defective tail light? I saw a video of Pope John Paul getting angry when he was in Nicaragua. FBI had tapes of Martin Luther King having illicit sex. Most American presidents and senators were not that moralistic in their private sex life. It is better if the monk did not get angry, but it also shows he is not a fake politician. Those who are genuine in their public work get angry and angry outbursts are not uncommon. Only politicians can pretend with toothpaste smiles.
With Sri Lanka now having a (mostly) boru police, BBS is trying to help the country with a volunteer force with thousands of eyes to help the boru police to become a real police. Therefore, the minister should thank BBS in its noble plan. I do not think BBS can be stopped by anybody because what it is doing is following the reasonable path or the Middle Path in Buddhism. Nobody in Sri Lanka should think that Buddhist monks did not play a key role in defeating Tamil terrorists. Ven. Elle Gunawansa told me that he did everything other than taking a gun to win the war. He was at the battle front with soldiers. When Gotabhaya Rajapakse was the only one who said “this war is winnable,” it was the active Buddhist monks who gave strength to the shaking legs of politicians to fight a just war. In a world of 7-8 billion people, Sri Lanka’s 15-20 million Sinhala Buddhists cannot use the Dhammapadaya to prevent aggression against them by billions of Christian and Islamic evangelists and the organized new anti-Buddhist weapon of Interfaith joke. We do not have to follow anymore Nanda Malini’s song, “do not take the navaguna wela to fight a war,” but readiness and willingness to undertake surgical operations is a must in a world full of guns and bombs. Not following this rule resulted in the death of Buddhism in so many countries such as India, Iran, Afghanistan, Malaysia, Korea, Maldives Islands and the Philippines. A Buddhist Jataka story gives a good example in this regard. During a famine the Bodhisatva Nagaya went in search of water and ended up in an old woman’s kitchen. When the woman took a stick to hit the Nagaya, it showed it full fan. The woman surprised and frightened holding her hands up in worshipping mode said, “Lord, please pardon me for my mistake in thinking that you were a garadiya, please leave my kitchen.” The unbelievable support BBS is receiving from people and the amazing level and amount of attacks directed against it from local and foreign agents is an indication that BBS is already a recognized Nagaya. The entire Sri Lankan political establishment is shaking in fear as if Ven. Soma’s ghost is back.

      C.Wijeyawickrema

So you think you are a Nagaya with the “full fan.” And I tell you, shit has hit your fan. Your arguments are retarded and you are nothing but a raving maniac. You make Taliban, LTTE and KKK look like choir boys.

Sri Lankan police may be “boru,” but you are trying to put “hora” hamuduruvo in their place. Then our police will become “hora police.” If the police forces are much better in the Scandinavian countries that is because there are no Buddhist monks there. No, seriously, those societies are secular and religion is kept out of government. I’m not saying there are no hora Catholic/Christian fathers, Hindu Aiyyars and Mullahs. But at least they have the virtue of not trying to grab the poor policemen’s jobs. I know every little boy’s dream is to be a policeman one day. But some of them never outgrow this desire even when they find themselves wearing the sivuruwa. Then they must resign from their current job before applying for another job. Don’t you realize it is a clear case of conflict of interest when Buddhist monks also want to be policemen at the same time. For one thing the Buddhist monk is supposed to show compassion, and he may as a policeman show compassion only to Sinhala Buddhists. Will he show the same compassion to Hindus, Christians and Muslims like our police officers are doing now. If he does then it will infringe on his duty as a Sinhala-Buddhist monk towards his nation and religion. So don’t mix orange and apple – I mean saffron and khaki. The wannabe policemen in the Sangha can be put to good use by asking them to police their own members. They should patrol their own barracks to check if any haram activities such as hanky-panky, hokey-pokey or hocus-pocus are going on behind the saffron curtain.

The tremendous moral decline that we are witnessing in our society today is mainly due to people not fulfilling their own social roles/functions properly and professionally, and instead getting involved in other people’s jobs. All clergy should be confined to their religious premises and should be banned from politics so that lay people can pursue their activities peacefully and realise true spirituality. Religious activity should be kept low key in state functions and even better if they are completely banned. Wije, you may not even comprehend what I’m talking about but this is how Sri Lanka and the rest of the world is going to be in 2050. Have a good day!

Many thanks for your contents. I love reading your kind of comments, because that bring us unknown realities from the past.

Only way they can improve lanken police is through pay hikes and independent police commission. Germany, Switzerland, Uk, France and other neibouring countries have a very good police service unlike the case in the US. I know German and swiss police very well. They dont want to react until politicians ask them to do so. It is not only the police but attitudes of the person in general should be changed if ever we want to see changes in lanken Police or whatever.

See, President as the minister of defence himself stays deaf/indifferent even if the media reveal that the police does not act accordingly.

Before being built being beton road ways, what we must do is to invest more in nation/society building programs to strengthen the average people´s attitudes so that they can contribute themselves in moving forward. At least for a targetted period this should have been carried out in a country like of ours -TORN by long held war.

This is what I found this evening.

I thought it is not truth what some lankens keep accusing of the Rajapakshes…

Following a video, I got to know know that the new airport and its main tasks have also been given to his family ones. Just was bit curious seeing one similar to current LANKEN ambassador to the US, I was compelled to surf a bit to find more…

Followings are what I found about that particular Prasanna Wickramsooriya.

One more characteristically sound critique of the regime by TG.

In despotic regimes like that of Mugabe and the Kim’s in bankrupt North Korea, the way to survive is to “invent a new enemy” whenever occasion demands – when the last one is no longer potent. The gullible Sinhalese have had enough of the LTTE, the Tigers, the Tamils for 30 years the audience now shows increasing fatigue. The diaspora bogey also will not last once it is proved leading actors in the regime are hobknobbing in various business deals with diaspora Tamil sources. A new enemy is found – and that should keep you going for sometime. That they are too citizens of the country and their properties, women, children and men are too entitled to protection guaranteed by the State appears to be immaterial in a Failed State.

Within the maze of confusion one can also detect growing fissures within the regime. The influential vote-bank of Sinhala extremism is with the JHU and the Weerawansa type of chauvinists and they are entirely MRs base of power. Other aspirants need an equally strong base and the new BBS owes its allegiance to GR – in case the day of reckoning comes sooner. The BBS warning is not directed against Moragoda or the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce alone. It warns other Buddhist priests identified with the “competition” as well. In the mid-1950s Buddharakita Thero did all his skullduggery using the Buddhist name until he was found out – shaming Lankan Buddhism along the way. The current political-priests need have no fear to what befell Buddharakita because that happened when the Courts were free and incorruptible.

Such is the stuff in which Empires rise and fall – however small they are.

    Is the man in the street or those who represent him ever have the gall to ask the regime “what have you done for the Sinhala people, having come to power on the name of the poor mass?” Health and Education is in a mess; the Cost of Living is killing the urban poor;
the judicial system has collapsed with two claiming to be the Chief Justice and the world laughing at us; people fear to go to the Police Station- a den of thieves serving largely as the private Security Service of the local politician, his children and family.

      Mr.Cheran Senguttuvan,

Your arguments never reach a platform of understanding unless you rephrase you sentences to suffice the meaning. Adding broken sentences together will give the reader a sound picture of what you are going to prove them. Apart from it, you should not concentrate to improve your grammar and using of proper words to suit the subject. Never, put your thoughts in Tamil and translate it to English, it’s not a good and practical way of essay writing.

Note: Never take Internet based articles for granted. Politically, they are but suggestive remarks.

Are we seeing an establishment of a “Religious Police” as in Saudi???

Whatever the reason for the detention of the vehicle at the exit point for two hours and no matter how bad, useless, corrupt our Police force is the behavior of the drunk monk is disgusting and definitely not becoming of monk. The attempts made by some here to justify this behavior by comparing it to the pope losing his temper are just pathetic. It was obvious by the crude vulger language he used to abuse the police that he was drunk as well. It does not take much to come to a judgment as to what this bastard parading as a monk is up to. It also fits in well with all the other unsavory foul mouthed characters/thugs the Rajapakshes have championed. Given the level of abuse this bastard monk dished out at the police in his drunken state in that one incident and the public act of support given by Gotabaya in addition to the allegations made in parliament about funding for the BBS coming from secret slush finds of the defence ministry it is another nail in the coffin of law enforcement and a tragic one with very serious consequences heading down the road.

Please don’t give the secretary more power by calling him “über-powerful”. Otherwise, well-written and critical piece of journalistic work. We need more such scribes for the sake of our future.

    @Wijeyawickrema.. LLB Phd..
A very wide detailed comment…information overload..LOL Your comment seems to justify what BBS is presently carrying out.. I wish to highlight the fact that this country has many more important issues than what BBS is trying to sort out..

I also would like to point out.. Since you claim that SL police are like puppets and that’s the reason BBS needs to be.. In a way I would say SL police is not that powerful to inflict damage as to what BBS is carrying out since they have lost dignity and value as to what you’re saying..

Is it SL police who is currently spreading racism and hatred in the country.. You have criticized the scholar monks placing BBS right at the top.. Is it cz BBS follows the teachings of buddhism that teaches peace and not hatred.. Or is it cz they are with some hidden ageda??

When there is an All Ceylon Buddhist Congress to look after the welfare and interests of the Sinhalese Buddhists, the creation of this BBS naturally raises everyone’s eyebrows. The Buddhist clergy is generally calm and had been helpful irrespective of any discrimination. However, the politicization of Buddhism began a dark chapter in the history of Sri Lanka. The protests of the BBS appear to be a retaliation of how Sri Lankan employees were treated in Saudi Arabia. There were number of instances where Sri Lankan employees were charged and some were even forced to embrace Islam contrary to their consciousness. Human Rights Watch has consistently pointed out such injustices being committed on Sri Lankans. Religious freedom is denied in Saudi Arabia to non-Muslims. It appears that obeisance to Lord Buddha is considered as an offence to Sharia Law. Saudi Arabia is a country that does not allow any room for democratic practices, especially the right to worship of their choice and the right to a fair hearing and their punishments are really barbaric. As majority of the migrants are generally illiterate, it is the duty of the government or the agents to give a proper training about the practices that are followed in Saudi Arabia. Neverthless, Sri Lankan politicians are to be blamed for such sorrowful events. If the Sri Lankan politicians have a far-sighted thinking on exploiting the natural resources that are available in the country, such tragedies will never occur. It is very painful to note that Sri Lankan politicians have failed to realize why countries like Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore refuse to send its workers especially housemaids to Saudi Arabia. The politicians always consider that the labour migrants are a main source of foreign exchange earner without realizing the consequences that are meted to the labourers. The main aim of the Sri Lankan politicians is to obtain a share through their labour force by risky means from the petro-dollars of Saudi Arabia. It is not only people from Sri Lanka that have been affected, but also citizens from Bangaladesh, Indonesia and Phillipines, because of their malignant economic policy. As far as Sri Lanka is concerned the agents who are engaged in sending the labour force are mainly Muslims. The Ministers and the agents are only concerned of their commissions, but not worried about their religious freedom. Mention should be made that Ministers who pay regular visits could have addressed these problems with the Saudi authorities.
Meanwhile, the actions of the Islamic Terrorist Movements in various countries also should be taken into consideration. Exploding bombs at places in foreign countries are another factor for the western countries to punish these Muslims cannot be ruled out. Against such a background, there is a possibility that the BBS may have taken thus undue opportunity to initiate a charge on the Muslims in Sri Lanka on the pretext of champion of Buddhism. The vital issue is whether the BBS has either discussed this matter either with the All Ceylon Buddhist Congress or the Chief Buddhist Prelate of the Asgiriya-Malwatta Chapter as it is called at the Dalada Maligawa,Kandy.
This is a matter which has to be analyzed on a broader spectrum in the context of the events in the Middle-East countries and of the inefficiency and narrow-mindedness of our politicians. It appears that
the BBS is just something similar to Shiv Sena to protest its voice for Sinhala Buddhists. Has any Muslim Minister ever condemned the barbaric punishments committed on the Sri Lankans, who enjoyed their civil liberties while not harming the Sharia Laws. Or has any Muslim Minister ever advised that it is dangerous to send the migrant workers to Middle-East countries and instead to focus attention on the exploitation of natural resources for the development of the economy. Why can’t the BBS advise the people or the government and stage a demonstration that it is dangerous to send the migrant workers to Middle-East countries and instead to focus attention on the exploitation of natural resources for the development of the economy. I think the Sri Lankan ruling politicians should not rely on false political differences anymore with the ethnic communities and immediately look into a meaningful federal system which will allow room for giant multi-national companies to exploit the natural resources for the development of the economy of the country, through which all communities will be benefited. This will discourage the migrant workers from going to Saudi Arabia and other Muslim countries and could avoid from being punished by Sharia laws. This is where the BBS should have paid its attention and not on the unlawful protests against specific communities. The BBS should realize that the Muslims are segment of Sri Lankan community.

If this was the case on the west, the ruling auhority would have taken legal action against this radical buddhist monk and put him under therapy to rehabilitate him.

How can any sane feel that a person with this much of criminal energies could move the sentimental and peaceful buddhists of the country ?It is more like to destroy lanken buddhism a virus has been been infiltrated to them – virus is none other than the this kind of monks and the ilk that follow

To date, this has been added to lanken cultre. Even if anyone would violate or behave wrongful manner, nothing like according to the prevailing laws is the case.

Anybody could easily go amok as it is seen this particular monk has been on the video – the langague he is used to use there is far from the common prayers of the average hamuduruwos.. Where have the seelawantha kama gone ? This kind of monks are trying to make efforts together with top leadership of the country – a better society – building up the nation.
It is like asking criminals to rule the country. Ratata giya kala ?

The world will be aware more about the country´s prevailing lawlessness situation much more today onwards after Baratha´s family held a long speech about the mal investigations of their brother/father. The investigations could have gone accurately, if president paid wholehearted support to that – as equal as his tax lifting the related issues to import Lamboginis irrespective of the badaginis of the poorest of the poor in the country.
