The murder of popular ruggerite Wasim Thajudeen was likely carried out by former Secretary to the Ministry of Defence Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s ‘death squad’, Colombo Telegraph reliably learns.
According to a group of ruggerites who were part of ‘Rajapaksa prince’ Yoshitha Rajapaksa’s entourage on the night of Thajudeen’s death – following a heated exchange of words between the two, an angry Yoshitha had met Gotabaya Rajapksa in person later that night and demanded for ‘Thajudeen to be done away with’.
At this point, Yoshitha had been egged on by several other players of the Navy rugby team who had urged him to ensure Thajudeen’s removal, pointing out he had always ‘disrespected’ the Rajapaksa brothers.
Sources claim the ‘Rajapaksa princes’ attempted to recruit Thajudeen to the Navy team on several occassions, but they had been repeatedly turned down by him who had always made it very clear that he does not wish to maintain any engagements with the Rajapaksas.
Former president Mahinda Rajapaksa on August 09th denied his son Yoshitha was involved in the alleged murder of Thajudeen. He said a future UPFA government would conduct an impartial probe into the alleged killing of Thajudeen if the party comes to power at the parliamentary polls. Cabinet Spokesman Minister Rajitha Senaratne said that investigations have unearthed the involvement of three Presidential Security Division (PSD) personnel who served during Rajapaksa’s time in the incident.
Thajudeen is believed to have been abducted in a defender jeep bearing the number plate WP – KA 0642 belong to the Red Cross Society of Sri Lanka at the time had been “gifted” to the Siriliya Foundation of former First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa. Last week the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society said; “We would like to inform the public that Sri Lanka Red Cross Society is unaware of the activities and maintenance of this vehicle from the period of August 2011 to until the time the vehicle was retrieved in this year as it was entrusted to the Siriliya Saviya Foundation. On 30th June 2015, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) requested our President and our Director General to provide statements on the change of color of the said vehicle, to which both has provided all information known, to the authorities. The vehicle is now in the procession of the Criminal Investigation Department.”

Well said, this mini series was all about election. Now, it is complete, who cares about Thajudeen, he is one of many. There was an gentleman agreement between MR and RW, signed at the dawn of 9th Jan 15, which says no Rajapakses will be punished for any wrong doings even proved. complying with this agreement and judicial independence will not go hand-in-hand; this country wont see the real judicial independence. Even politicians let them alone, behaviour of most of justices are below par. Look at the chiefs: N Silva, Sriyani, Mohan….all have highly politicised and with their own prejudices one way or other.
Interesting time ahead, UNP will not be able to do much, given it doesn’t have a clear majority on its own. MR will pull the legs at every occasion if he believes he can muster some gains by such moves. Resolving the mystery disappearances should be a high priority for UNP as voters expect nothing less than that.

Investigations regarding Eknaligoda’s disappearance obstructed by top brass
It is reported that investigations regarding the disappearance of journalist Prageeth Eknaligoda have been hampered due to the protection given by certain senior officers in the security forces to the four Army personnel who are to be arrested regarding the incident.
According to sources the CID has informed the Army to hand over the four Army personnel. However, the senior Army officers have not responded until yesterday (19th).
Earlier, two personnel attached to Army Intelligence and a retired Army Sergeant Major were arrested by the CID in connection with the disappearance of Eknaligoda. All details about the disappearance had been revealed when these suspect were questioned.
The police media spokesman revealed that investigations carried out so far had revealed that Mr. Eknaligoda was abducted, taken to an Army camp at Girithale, detained and questioned for three days.
Investigations have revealed the four Army personnel to be arrested are the main suspects of the disappearance of Mr. Eknaligoda.
Investigations that would be carried out once the four Army personnel are arrested and questioned would definitely reveal whether journalist and cartoonist Prageeth Eknaligoda was made to disappear for personal reasons or on a directive of a strong man in the former regime, if such a strong man was involved in the disappearance who that person was and what position he is at present.
