Gota’s Journey Had Its Humour

By Shyamon Jayasinghe

Oh! What an era we live in! Gotabaya Rajapaksa, most powerful sibling of the most powerful President Sri Lanka ever had, on a journey to the Bribery Commissioner’s Office! On the first of January this year did you, reader, ever imagine this journey? Even on the 8th of January Maitripala Sirisena had no clue that Gota will have to make his way to the Bribery Commissioner’s Office under his watch as President. Maitri was hiding that fateful day in a secret place fearing that Mahinda Rajapaksa would have Gota’s men get him and his family. Everybody feared Gota.

Such are the insecurities of politics. The Buddha had said that everything emerges, stays for a while and passes away. But nothing passes away as astonishingly as political fortunes do. We are surprised when it happens; yet we soon get accustomed to the imagination that politicos, once ensconced in the seats of power, are hard to get rid of. More than us, the politician himself will least believe his glory will end. The delusion of permanence is both the driving force of politicians in power and their eventual death knell.

The Daily FT of 24th April 2015 carried a report of Gota’s journey which compels comment. I like to share this with my readers. A large crowd of protestors had assembled in the premises defying a previous court order. Rajapaksas are experts at jana ganga (rivers of people). They had mastered the mobilizing technique from the JVP. We saw it at election meetings. We saw it at Nugegoda. With ample financial resources at disposal and a well -organized local mob leadership such jana ganga simply happens. Poor Basil, now in person, didn’t have it organized for him-maybe due to his slight fall- out from the Rajapaksa mainstream. His nephew, Yoshitha, had reportedly castigated the uncle for being primarily responsible for his Dad’s fall from power. Yoshitha does not admit his own contribution.

GotaBack to the crowds. They carried an illegal Sri Lanka flag without the two stripes that represent the Tamil and Muslim communities. In other words, they stand for the ‘pure patriots,’ or, as Dayan Jayatilleka may say, ‘smart patriots.’ The racist rallying cry that has been marking the “bring –back MR campaign” was reflected here, too. The theory that minorities are guests who must live on the good nature of Sinhalese constitute the brain, heart, and soul of Sinhala extremism. Leading the crowd there was Gammampila, the break-away founder of the ‘Pivithuru Hetak,’ (pure tomorrow) campaign –whatever that may mean. We are familiar with Namal’s ‘Tharunyata Hetak (Tomorrow for Youth). The youth got nothing of that campaign of Namal except that the funds were reportedly outlayed for the Dad’s election campaign. Maybe night car races were also run on that money. In the case of Gammanpila, there is an admission that the current regime is not ‘pure’ (in character) and that we hapless Sri Lankans must wait until Gammanpila ushers that purity. A leader in a hurry, the circumstances of his suddenly leaving the JHU was definitely not the start of that ushering because it was transparently foul. Maybe, Gammanpilla has reformed after that furtive slip away.

Besides the crowds, Gota himself came out with some choice statements on the way to the Bribery Commissioner, according to the FT report. He was not after drinks. ““I served this country honestly as an official. If they can do this to an official like me, I don’t think any State official will work for this country again,” And what have “they” done? Summon him for questioning. Prey, what’s wrong with that? In the civilized world the law is supreme and even big wigs must allow to be examined for charges made. If the charges are not sustainable they are let go. No official will be discouraged to work in circumstances like that. If one is not guilty one can hang it. Next, Gota becomes the judge in his own cause when he says, ”all these allegations are baseless.” Obviously, the Rajapaksas were judges in their own cause when they were in power. If matters went pass them and their musclemen to court there were judges who would have acted “sensitively,” because it is the government that the judges are dealing with. Mohan Pieris proclaimed the doctrine that judges must be “sensitive to the executive.” In this part of the world judges are required to be sensitive to the law and the law alone. But now the pendulum has swung away. Mohan’s law and the Rajapaksas are no more.

Counsel for Gota, Kariyawasam, also showed his colours during that suspenseful journey. The charges had been with regard to financial transactions that had taken place while Gota had been Mihin Air Chairman. Kariyawsam stated ”in defense” that this was a period when Gota was busy fighting a war. Can lawyers be more stupid? If Gota was busy why did he take up the post of Mihin Air Chairman? So many better qualified persons could have been spotted in any nook and corner in Colombo itself. The rub is that it all must be kept in the family. We know what the Sri Lankan Airlines “family Chairman” had been up to.

Shyamin Jayasinghes article is very refreshing to read in the current circumstances. Yes, political fortunes can disappear instantly. That is why some of these such unscrupulous politicos want MR
back even through a back door so that their fortunes can be recovered and enjoy the fruits of their rowdism etc. Also, these days they run behind all kinds of temples, offer poojas, and make special bribes to Gods so that when they get their power back they can earn many times of the value of this bribe to God’s.

Yesterday, Gota who describes himself as a good public servant who believes in law and order had to be present at BC whilst the courts had banned all types protests in this area, his supporters ( to whom probably food and arrack provided + some cash from the loot) received him with loud speakers etc so that he can address for publicity through the media which he didvas he was being targeted for his heroic acts. This is only a start and he may have to do many such trips to the BC, FCID, etc frequently in the coming weeks and wait and see he is going to carry forward these acts to fool the masses.

Unfortunately, in this country you have so called journalists, such as DJ, Maheendapala, etc
who cannot see these but they only want “his master’s voice”

Thank you. Now, the next steps, to put the house in order, sans, the Medamulana tribe. Maname Pothe Gura, can you write the Sri Lanka common sense pamphlet?

“Oh! What an era we live in! Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, most powerful sibling of the most powerful President Sri Lanka ever had, on a journey to the Bribery Commissioner’s Office! Tsar of Russia, the Pol Pots, The Saddam Husseins and Gotas are falling under the Peoples desire and power. We all must salute, We the People with Common sense who voted for the Common Sense Candidate.

Shaymon, you may write another article Comparing Richard Nixon, His impending Impeachment, hos resignation, and of course about his Vice President, Spiro Agnew, who was impeached or Resigned. none of these crooks wanted to come back and contest as Presidents or Prime MInisters.

      Richard Nixon

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Nixon

      Spiro Agnew
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spiro_Agnew

In 1973, Agnew was investigated by the United States Attorney for the District of Maryland on charges of extortion, tax fraud, bribery, and conspiracy. He was charged with having accepted bribes totaling more than $100,000 while holding office as Baltimore County Executive, Governor of Maryland, and Vice President. On October 10 that same year, Agnew was allowed to plead no contest to a single charge that he had failed to report $29,500 of income received in 1967, with the condition that he resign the office of Vice President. Nixon later replaced Agnew by appointing House Minority Leader Gerald Ford as Vice President. When Nixon resigned from the White House due to the Watergate scandal, Ford assumed to the presidency the following year.

“His nephew, Yoshitha, had reportedly castigated the uncle for being primarily responsible for his Dad’s fall from power. Yoshitha does not admit his own contribution.” He is actually onto something closer to the truth.

Given below is an example of a Pure “Patriot”, Idiot. They all are “Pure” Paradeshis, Paras, from South and East india who came by Hora Oru, Illegal Boats and Kalllathonis. The Proof of these Pure Paras, Para-Sinhala, along with the the Para-Tamils, is in their bodies, in the form of DNA.

How do you get across to Idiots who have an Average IQ of 65 and explain things? Is it harder than explaining what a computer or calculator will do to a donkey?

If Wimal Modawansa used a calculator, he would have got a better answer.

2/2=0 says Wimal Modawansa. My Calculator says 2/2 =1. Modawansas brin should be replaced with a calculator.

Why are you dismayed about the Truth? CT says as their Tag line, “The Truth is a Process” Why are you afraid of the Truth?

Why are you not dismayed at Wimal Modawansa and the other Modayas following the other Modayas? Because you are one of the Modayas with an IQ of 65? Stop being a Modayas. Use your brain, not the way Modawansa uses his brain.

Thank you for the humorous article. I spilled my coffee on my keyboard while reading it. I cannot imagine the thinking of some people who are living a life of denial. Sri Lanka is a rich island with multi-ethnic population. It is the envy of many other countries. I for one, have capitalise on that fact when talking to non-sri Lankans.

Sri Lanka has become a police state – Gotabaya
      April 23, 2015 04:40 pm

Former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa today said that he has not unlawfully obtained a single cent within the past 9 years and that he is the victim of a politically motivated witch-hunt.

Rajapaksa arrived at the Commission to Investigate Allegation of Bribery or Corruption this morning amidst a large gathering of protesters chanting slogans against the government and the commission for summoning the former military man, who is a brother of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

“(Sri Lanka) has now become a police state,” Rajapaksa said, speaking to reporters outside the commission. He stated every Ministerial Secretary under the former regime are being charged with bribery and corruption today and are summoned for questioning. “But these are baseless accusations.”

The ex-Defence Secretary further said that if the Bribery Commission is summoning him on allegations of corruption, then every single person in the country should be brought in for questioning.

“Because I have not collected or defrauded a single cent within the past 9 years. Only my salary and army pension have been credited to my account,” he said.

He charged that high-ranking officials in the institution who are summoning him on corruption charges, themselves have been accused of illegally obtaining properties. “They are the ones who should be summoned before the commission first and foremost.”

“This is a politically motivated hunt. I believe that our democracy is eroding under this police control,” he said.

        Ha, Ha, Japwatch,

Taking Native’s advice is the keyboard now safe?

What dis this Gota fellow learn while living in the US? What does he know about a police state?

The problem with Police state architects is that they don’t know to recognize one even if they created one.

I have a perfect example of experiencing a police state action at Weli Park in Nugegoda, when I visited the place for the first time. After walking briskly around for a while full of admiration for this transdformation, I kept my foot on the low parapet ringing around the landscaped middle area, to do my undone shoelace.

“Oi” shouted someone from somewhere, a shout directed at me. I looked up and saw a Navy man pointing his finger at me and shouting “Take that bloody foot off the wall”. (I couldn’t remember if he carried a gun or not).

Something went out of my spirit and my mood. I felt low and dejected. I took my foot off the wall, and I walked off never to return.

That to me is Police state action. Gota was then the defense secretary.

    Thank you, Mr. Jayasinghe.

Why Rajapakse’s are so scared of rule of law? They are scared to go before the authorities. They were the authority earlier and cannot see that it has changed. If they have robbed the country and used power to suppress others and destroy them, they should be punished.

Under this `Yaha palanaya` everyone should be equal under the law and after banning of all demonstrations opposite BC office, no one has been taken to custody. We saw Gammanpilla, Dulles, Bandula Gunawardane and others addressing the crowd. Why weren’t they taken to custody? If yesterday was not the appropriate time, why not take them now. This is going against a court order.

The impermanence of power is the first lesson, and the impermanence of wealth is the next, awaiting these once rich and powerful men.

The impermanence of life will be learnt along the way for sure, by all those who behaved as though they were immortal.

How much more pleasanter it would have been for these family men to have enjoyed their enforced holiday in peace?

    When will they ever learn?

They all must be brought before Court and the Law of the land. If they have not robbed why all this fuss to muster paid people to come and protest. They could go to the BC un announced.

The bloody rogues should be put into jail, if they could jail Sarath Fonseka, who they claimed was the best Army Commander in the world, why cant they be put into jail first. ordinary people are taken into custody, they are now ordinary citizens, they should be put in jail and they questioned.

Its a very informative article and there are lot for the people of this country should think rationally and sensibly about the future. There is a difference between true patriotism and opportunistic patriotism. There is nothing wrong in loving your land and people. The patriotism should come from the good heart and good values and it should unite the people through love, kindness and good governance. The country went through the severe hardship, wars, loss of lives, destruction of wealth since 1948 because of one and only most important factor is the policy of false patriotism or opportunistic patriotism. It was used as a vechicle to establish their power authority and not as a vechicle to bring peace and stability.
Mahinda Rajapakse family and those followers are trying to do the same again. That is why they changed the national flag? They can’t change the flag in the parliament by law. They want Sinhalese people to turn this land with blood. The whole world will turn against the Sinhalese as murderers, as human rights violators, as uncivilised not against this opportunistic patriots? They will continue to rob the people, rob the freedom of speech, rob the freedom of justic. This is what Mahinda & Co plan to do! Their motive is power, Their aim is family kingdom!
The people have a choice. A good governance by law, love and kindness or A bad governance by a Family law, violence, corruption and hatred against others.

“On the first of January this year did you, reader, ever imagine this journey”

Since this is adressed to me, I shall reply.

Did I imagine such a journey? 1st of January, 8th January- no, but then I underestimated the RAW power of the people both foreigners and locals.

9th January? Of course. From the time the all powerful former president was asking for protection for himself and his brothers from Ranil, on the 9th of January, it was evident that their future involved some element of risk, shall we say.

As a person who did not believe that MR would have won a third term in 2016, it was only a matter of time before the watchdogs of this country, the opposition plus any crossovers, would go after the “R”s. Even during their reign, we heard much hate directed at them, rightly or wrongly.

I have heard that “Ranil is a gentleman” so it is to his credit that it is not much worse than this:

MR allowed to run for election.
    GR made a statement
BR in prison – sorry prison hospital – sorry hospital

What are you laughing at now?

Great article Shyamon. The shit eating pig has now to eat his own shit. Laughable when this imbecile says that the country is not being ruled in a democratic way now. This murderer and thief who was responsible for the disappearance of so many decent human beings has the gall to even talk about democracy after he and his brutal brothers and family broke every decent rule of law. All thosie who attened the demonstration must be arrested and dealt with according to the law and this pig investigated for inciting the breach of law as these thugs are in his payroll. DJ and modapala were not there at the demonstration to support their criminal hero, the rumor is that they were with the Sri Lankan airlines chairman relaxing in jaela to get rid of their stress.

Gota has been so intimate with the Chinese (and Ukrainians but that’s another story) that he even starts to look a bit Chinese if you ask me. Always wondered if he and his brothers are from one and the same father …

    Absolute power corrupted Gota absolutely.
His worst human rights violations were committed under the shadow of the obnoxious Prevention of Terrorism Act, by which he became “judge, jury and executioner”.
His famous “There should be nothing outside the No Fire Zones” pronouncement which gave the army ‘permission’ to shell civilians, was the most brutal period of the war.

You have read about Gadafi, Saddam, Sanchesku and compare with Gota., No doubt all these guys are psychopaths but the worse is Gota.
How dare you are trying to deny all the wrong doings. Let alone the corruptions which were published only after your brothers defeat in the election.
What about the killings you are responsible for starting from Editor of Sunday leader. Your interview with BBC is still very fresh in my mind
What about your roll in imprisoning General Sarath Fonseka , In the same interview you said you will kill him
What about bringing a puppy story, Janz has to leave the country because you threatened to kill her only because she pulished the story of the Swiss puppy
You are responsible of killing of all the LTTE leaders who were surrendering holding white flags.
What about the white van abductions. You are the only Srilankan to have sharks as pets and can afford them , of course they must have got their white van supply of human flesh daily, make sure you free them as there wont be any more free meat.
To be honest you are lucky enough to be alive only because unlike an animal like you there are some good people hold power , although you are you are still treated as human.
I only hope they will lock you away for all your sins are throw the keys.

As Shakespear put it “the world is a stage and we are all actors. We play are part and quit”.In some cases we come back in a different costume to play another part but these are few and far between. For the vast majority it’s the one part and quits for ever. The Rajapakses are no different. No matter what one may say or feel about Gotabhaya now we must admit and commend the role he played at a critical time of our history to bring an end to the misery that was affecting the whole country being the Demonic LTTE that was sucking the lifeblood of the country. For that Gotabhaya will be remembered and no matter the wrath of some of the commentators displayed out of personal hatred because of bias,Gotabaya’s place in the history of our country is secure.
It is an absolute pity that the Rajapakse regime let slip the valuable opportunity after the defeat of the LTTE to bring about a lasting and sincere reconciliation between the North and South but insted chose to play cheap racist politics to enjoy corruptly the fruits of victory for the benefit of the family only. The rotten In-Laws and even more rotten children ruined Mahinda Rajapakse’s place in history. It is a good lesson for politicians to keep family at arms length or risk the loss of everything gained “in one roll of the dice”.

As Shakespear put it “the world is a stage and we are all actors. We play our part and quit”.In some cases we come back in a different costume to play another part but these are few and far between.

No more better qualified person than the Goat to run an airline like Mihin Air. At least, having been a petrol pump attendant, he would know where to put the petrol in the aircraft. His brother in law who ran Air Lanka did not know where to put the pump.

Gota is boiling with rage and he openly flaunts law inciting hatred and violence. On that account at least put him behind bars for few days. That will send some shivers down his spine. Don’t forget that he is a coward at he same time being a psychopath. Now trying to hide behind a bunch of hooligans.
