The Government has lied about the prices of crude oil and petrol sold locally in 2014 and 2018, the Media Unit of former president Mahinda Rajapaksa claims.

Rohan Welivita, Media Secretary to Mahinda Rajapaksa, has claimed in a media release that newspaper advertisements taken by the Finance and Media Ministry (at taxpayers’ expense) are erroneous.
‘The Ministry states that the world price of crude oil in 2014 was USD 60 when in fact even the latest Central Bank reports show that the average price of crude oil imports in that year was over USD 104,’ Welivita claims. Although admitting that crude oil prices did slide in the last three months of 2014, the high price in the first three quarters meant that the average exceeded USD 104, he argues.
Welivita further states:
“As the Central Bank reports show, during the last four years of the Rajapaksa government, in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014, the average price of crude oil imports was over USD 109. But by the time the present government came into power in January 2015, the oil price had suddenly gone down to USD 51 and it went down further during the past three years. It is only after around October 2017 that crude oil prices began rising again to reach USD 70+ today. The Ministry of Finance and Media is lying to the public in claiming that the price of crude oil was USD 60 in 2014. The people should note that taxpayers’ money is being used to carry out the false political propaganda of the yahapalana government.”
He adds that although President Maithripala Sirisena promised in his election manifesto that taxes on fuel will be removed, this was never done.
“Central Bank Reports show that during the Rajapaksa government, crude oil was imported to Sri Lanka at an average price of about USD 80 only as far back as 2010. Back in 2010 the retail price of petrol was Rs. 115, diesel Rs. 73 and kerosene Rs. 51. So people will see that the yahapalana government is selling fuel at prices far in excess of what is warranted by the present world market price of crude oil.”
“When the Indian oil company recently increased the price of petrol by Rs. 9, the government increased the price by more than twice that amount. Not only is the yahapalana government levying a massive tax on fuel, they are making a significant profit on the difference between the world market price of crude oil and the retail price of fuel as well. Thus the people are being made to pay the cost of keeping the yahapalana government afloat.”

Inferiority Complex: Thanks for that comment. The word ‘Para’ appears in the Sinhala classic poem collection called ‘Lo Weda Sangarawa’, composed by Ven. Vīdāgama Maitreya Mahathera in the 15th century. This was considered compulsory reading in our childhood 50 years back.
There is a poem there with the phrase ‘Ath Weda para Weda Samawa Sithanne’. Ath Weda here means one’s own affairs, interests or betterment and Para Weda means ‘other’s affairs, interests or betterment’. Thus the meaning of the above phrase is ‘consider the interests an betterment of self and others as equally important’.
In this sense, the word ‘para’ is not demeaning at all. However as CountryFirst has pointed out Amarasiri always uses the word ‘para’ in a demeaning sense. He seems to be obsessed with the idea that the Sinhalese are an inferior race and therefore, everything that has some relationship to the Sinhalese, such as the Sinhalese language, Mahavamsa, Sangha, are also inferior. But if the crisis in Iran continues which has direct impact on their oil production capacity, it is predicted that the oil price will reach upto $100/bbl at the end of this year. I am not an expert on this. But this is the situation. According to the prediction, Yahapalanaya government’s oil honeymoon is over. In fact it was temporary.

In 2015, the oil price came record low at $52/bbl which was a massive “53%” BELOW the oil price in 2014 which is correctly highlighted in the media release. In 2014, the oil prices reached $112/bbl, and then in the middle of the year it was $108/bbl and then it started going down reaching as low as $59/bbl in December 2014. I remember writing a comment to LCN in 2015 stating that low oil prices will continue until the end of 2017 as I checked the world’s oil predictions.

Out of oil producing countries, Iran is reasonable as it strives to keep oil prices at $60-65/bbl.
Iran’s oil production capacity is 3.75 million/bbl a day while US’s production capacity in 2018 has jumped to 10 million/bbl a day.
Russia tops with 11 million/bbl a day while Saudi Arabia comes second with 10.6 million/bbl a day. US is third.
US is trying hard to minimize Iranian oil imports, by putting sanctions so that they can push oil prices up. It is no secret that US is aiming to produce 12 million/bbl by the end of 2019 even beating Russia which is at present on the top of the list.
Iran is positive that the prices will remain moderate as they import 75% of their oil to to China and other Asian countries even with ROK and Japan trying to buy crude oil from Iran.
Anyways, according to oil predictions, with US sanctions on Iran, the oil price will go up to $100/bbl and even $300/bbl. However, it is believed that in the event the price goes as high as $300/bbl, other OPEC countries other than Iran will increase their production capacity to get the price down back to $100/bbl and then the current moderate price of $60/bbl.
I believe that it is clear where our allegiance should be. Iran is a founding member of the NAM.

It was some where around 1 USD = 113 LKR. Petrol price was 119 LKR per liter.
That is just over 1USD per liter then.
Similarly we can use the preset exchange rate of 1 USD = 157 LKR and
Petrol price today is 137 LKR per liter.
0.87 USD per liter.
Even though the market price of oil is almost the same, our rupee is less strong against the dollar.
I think you should know better to take into account variations in the exchange rate before blabbering out utter nonsense, to cause cheap pandamonium. Stop taking the entire Lankan population for fools.

Lasith the LKR lost big time during Yahapals, and that has nothing do with MR it was because Yahapalas keep printing LKRs. Furthermore crude oil price in 2010 was in todays inflation adjusted prices US$ 79.89, and today it is US$ 70.00. So for the consumer it should cost less than in 2010.
I don’t know where you live but Sri Lankan consumers live in Sri Lanka and they get paid in LKRs and they have to cough out more for their petrol than they did in 2010, and that is that. So Lasith stop trying to twist the truth.

MAhinda Rajapakse’s economics sucks. Even with high prices what was the fuel price at that time. IT was cheap fuel. the govt was losing money. Now one problem is 31% of the Srilankan fuel is consumed by politicians and the rich people. So, fuel is subsidized for them. fuel prize was increased for middle class but politicians are using FREE FUEL WITHOUT A LIMIT and sometimes they sell it.

USD 100-110 was the Average crude Oil Price from 2009 to June 2014.
It dropped to USD 60 in December 2014.
The March 2018 price was still USD 66 .a barrel.
So the Average Price of Crude has been just over USD 60 per Barrel for the whole duration of Dr Ranil and Sillysena’s Yahapalanaya.
What did Dr Ranil’s Treasury do with the Money, if he was charging the Yahapalana suckers based on the 2014 Average of USD 104 ?.
I know Dr Ranil’s Royal Buddy gave LKR 11 Billion to SIL.
That is only a fraction of the Profits if the poor Yahapalana sods were and are buying Fuel at Dr Ranil’s Average Crude Price of USD 104 a Barrel..

Certainly, both of them would not have had the courage to withstand the immense international pressures mounted at that time to save the Tigers. They would have succumbed meekly like dry tree leaves being blown to smithereens in a storm. The Tigers would have simply walked in to Colombo without facing any resistance like Hitler’s Army walking in to Paris.
MR is not a nice man. In fact he is a thug. But only a thug with absolutely no sympathy and zero consideration for the enemy could do the job. And our thug did it in style. For that, Sri Lankans of all races should be grateful because by achieving that victory he saved hundreds of thousands of lives on both sides. Don’t forget that most of you guys who criticize him now probably owe your lives to Mahinda.

America stopped Son Prince to travel to America. Under normal conditions, there is legal action possible against Immigration and State Department. If your hands are clean you need to appeal against the rejection of Visa. Though the traveler is foreigner, “DHS redress” available in US, a much cheaper remedy. Otherwise hiring a US lawyer for US court may be expensive. If the explanation to the rejection is not satisfactory, the Court may order to issue the Visa. Two months ago Son Prince had to go back to Lankawe from Russia because the Plane that was going to USA refused to allow board Son Prince citing the US travel restriction.
Udayanga, Ponny et al had similar problems. But CT patrons were asking why Manuel Noriega II was allowed to go to USA, but much milder criminals like Son Prince were bared by USA. When the oil prices were 100USD a barrel one Mahinda Rajapakshe entered a hedging deal whereby CPC agreed to pay a consortium of banks headed by Standard Chartered bank to buy oil at 100USD ONO for all time. The consortium knew this price was not sustainable and it would fall. But Percy either did not or made a deal to skim the profits. So we began paying 100USD ONO per barrel while the price eventually came down. The CPC was now bleeding money to the hedge fund on one side while the CEB and the CGR refused to settle their bills. The debt of these three organizations combined was so staggering that the state banks to which all three owed money were struggling to survive without collapsing. Now he is accusing the CPC of making a profit which it probably needs to pay off its monumental debts incurred at that time. This guy has no credibility other than what is given to him by some of the commentators. What a joker.
