By Colombo Telegraph –
Frontline Socialist Party (FSP) leader Premakumar Gunaratnam alias Kumar Mahaththaya alias Noel Mudalige surrounded to Sri Lakan police Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa told Independent Television Network (ITN)short while ago. Gunarathnam will be charged for many cases. But he did not say anything about Dimuthu Atigala. According to our sources, after the live talk-show while having an informal chat with INT producers Gotabhaya told “ Gunaratnam was at one time a high-ranking subversive activist involved in many crimes, including the attack on the Pallekele army camp in 1987, and escaped from the Magazine Prison in 1988, where he was detained under the Terrorism Prevention Act” .

After Gota’s admittance, now there are new questions to be raised.
1. We are under the normal law now (no more emergency law). Is this how SL police arrest people?
2. At the beginning the Police media spokesman denied the police involvement in the ‘disappearance’. What do they say now?
3. What happened to Dimuthu?
4. How are they going to justify the process they followed in taking these people into custody?
5. The implications of this admittance on previous disappearances.

Since LTTE defeated another form of terror still prevails. Crease Devil, White Van, abductions, disappearances, murders. where are we heading to? World is watching to upgrade the previous UN resolution. I love to hear this will not happen
/
DAS / April 10, 2012
We are NOT under normal law – only the emergency was “removed”.
The PTA was reinserted into normal legislation – and is alive and well.
This is the law which enables arbitary, secret arrest & detention after covering approval by the Defence Secretary.
There is not a hum from the Bar Association.

oops
See what happens when Gota gets caught with his pants down?
OK- wait for the trumped up charges to come.
At least he is alive, thankfully.
/
gamini / April 10, 2012
Chandra, what do you mean that Gota is caught with his pants down? He never had any. Besides there is no Law and Order system in this country. The one that existed is in tatters, as all the black coats are President’s Counsels. That is why the Laws delays. Then some are set free of indictments or acquited of charges. Some can kill in open day light and the MR Govt will keep the accused out of reach from the Courts. So Gota has decided to short circuit all this by deciding to hold Kangaroo Courts for others. But this Kangaroo from Australia has been able to expose the DUPLICITY of these Jokers. Oh! Tempora Oh! mores.

Gamini,

The resolution adopted at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva only last month seems to have fallen on deaf ears. First, there was an attempt to abduct the Chairman of the Mulleriya Urban Council. Now comes news of the abduction of Premakumara Gunaratnam. If he has violated any Sri Lankan law, he should be held accountable but the due legal process should be followed. He went missing and officially the Police denied it. Now, Defence Secretary, Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, the most powerful man in Sri Lanka admits he is in Police custody. That shows that a man who is purported to have committed an offence in 1987 is “taken into custody” without the knowledge of the Police. Then the Defence Secretary goes to a state run television station to announce it. The Defence Secretary seems to know when the Police are unaware. Now, Gunaratnam will be charged for many offences, old and new. Where is Sri Lanka headed?

/

He was captured not because of his political activism, he was captured because he posed a threat to national security.
Any elements who pose a threat to national security will be dealt with by the Ministry of Defence, forgot about the police or any police division for that matter.

/
sue / April 9, 2012
These are the HR violations we’re talking about. It does not matter who or what. Humans cannot be abducted like this. International HR Commissions please take action and do something soon; but do not to heap more burdens on the poor citizens of SL which is what you usually do; but take action against the top people who are involved in these violations. In the end its we that suffer and not them.

What normal law? The PTA is alive and well and now the JVP is being attacked by the PTA.. How ironical? Let the PTA be, and let the Rajapakses give a taste bof paradise via the PTA. Tamils are not scared of the PTA anymore, although thousands of Tamils have been arrested and are in jail for years without charges and trial. All the media and journalist have forgotten about them and getting so excited about these 2 JVP’ers. Geneva UNHRC resolution has nothing to do with Sinhala opposition. That was specifically about war Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity in the North in 2009.It was about the Silva report. This is simply a Police matter and MOD was silly to deny the arrest. This is what he did to the Tamils for 7 years, and there was silence from everybody except a few like Lasantha or Mano Ganeshan.

Im not a fan/supporter of this “jana aragala group”. yes probably he might have links with tamil extremists. However this is not the way the government should deal with that.

Australian news has given wide publicity to this abduction. There has been a statement by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs.Gunaratnam is an Australian citizen, and Australia thinks all its citizens are precious. If you touch an Australian, no matter he or she decends from Somalia, Sri Lanka, black, white, hispanic, asian, celtic or you name it, prepare to face the concequences. SL government was shown the place where it belongs to in Geneva and SL is busy proving it.
/
Geoffrey Moreira / April 10, 2012
Raj.. your talking CRAP..As Premakumar Gunaratnam is a citizen of Australia, the country has the legal right to protect its citizen’s abroad irrespective of its ethnic background..Bear in mind that Australia has & will continue to give residency to migrants like my family in 1973 to continue progress in life thru opportunities in education, employment etc:. Thousands of SL’s have taken advantage so far, and by and large are the most respected community abiding the laws of the country. NO.. we Aussies now ( still love our country of birth & celebrate its milestones & college affiliations ) are NOT precious..YES..there are issues / problems in SL where progress is being accomplished, but do not betray your country of birth..Always remember WE must always try to resolve differences & achieve success. NO..SL was NOT shown its place, but just reminded of its obligations..fair enough…

Sam Perera / April 9, 2012
Premekumar Gunarathnam shall think ten times before engages in 1987 style monkey business.
– If he is an Australian citizen then he had violated Sri Lankan law by doing politics in Sri Lanka.
– If he came here under a different name as some websites claim (Mudalige Noel), then he shall go to prison for violating Sri Lankan immigration law.
– If Australia issued a fake passport knowingly then Australian government shall be held responsible for promoting subversive politics in Sri Lanka.
– If he ran away from Sri Lankan prison in 88, then he is a fugitive and shall be duly punished.
– If he is a dual citizen, then he is equally subjected to Sri Lankan law and Australia has to stay away from this issue.
Regardless, Australia has not got any monkey business in this case. In addition, we will not let former JVP to do subversive politics once again.
/
Geoffrey Moreira / April 10, 2012
Sam..The Australian govt: will ONLY issue a passport based on the name on the Birth Certificate granted by SL..IF he has Dual Citizenship then it is depended on the name on his issued SL Birth Certificate..Maybe he gave 2 different names!!!!
/
Geoffrey Moreira / April 10, 2012
Here are the facts:
It appears that Mr. Premkumar Gunaratnam has changed his name three times. The first name, Wanninayake Mudiyanselage Daskon, appears in his marriage certificate. A different name, Rathnayake Mudiyanselage Dayalal, is used in the passport which he obtained from this country. Yet another name, Noel Mudalige, was used when he obtained the Australian passport which he produced on his arrival in Sri Lanka on 4th September 2011.
WHY WOULD AN INDIVIDUAL HAVE 3 DIFFERENT NAMES??? ALL IN THE NAME OF SUBVERSIVE ACTIVITIES??.
WHY WOULD HE BE INVOLVED IN POLITICAL MATTERS BEING AN AUSSIE CITIZEN??.
THESE ARE INDIVIDUALS THAT ARE ” FRONTS ” FOR THE LTTE INCITING, LOBBYING & PROMOTING INSTABILITY IN SL.
/
AMT / April 10, 2012
Sam. Please remeber that there are a couple of Americans, doing politics in Sri Lanka and are also cabinet ministers of this Government – have’nt they violated Sri Lankan Law? Then there is a top guy in the goverment who is branded as a liar, could not attend the wedding reception of his son in USA, fearing for his arrest for crimes committed in Sri Lanka??

You seem to have the idea that this forum exists for you to display your stupidity!
Why don’t you just read and re-read your comments a hundred times – that should take care of whatever grey matter you might still have.
Apropos of “foreigners” engaging in political activity in Sri Lanka, when last I heard, dual citizens were just that DUAL citizens. And how about the people who take care of you, one with the first name of Basil and the other of Gotha? Doesn’t the US Constitution SPECIFICALLY require them to pledge allegiance to that country ONLY?
/
Jim Hardy / April 10, 2012
@Sam Perera,
How stupid you are how come Basil, Gota, SF, Dulles doing politics here, others Political view & different stances is monkey business for you ah, how about Present regime issued forged passport to Karuna, & one of Sumathipalas henchmen in fact Sumathipala was charged aiding & abbetting, once he joined the Govt case thrown away, If your rogue dishonest thuggish regime try to crush their movement that will be end of our peace.
If your rogue murderous govt is brave enough why did they leave him to go scot free back to Australia.
only to corrupt rogue henchmens of this regime will look as subversive when their power is threatened.

Peter Casie Chetty / April 10, 2012
Well said Sam. As we all know these people are involved in all kinds of neferious activities. I remember covering the case of Tamils who had been involved in impporting heroin to France in 1984. I mean their criminal enterprises have history. Duping the descendants of other criminals who are the Australian is very easy.
Max to always has valid arguments.
In the Tamil community every man who sell asprins is called Doctor, every other who teaches is called Master and there are lots of Captains without boats or planes. I think it makes them feel important.

Most of the above replies are misleading. There’s no record of one Kumar Mahathaya. But an individual who claims to be an Australian citizen going by the name of “Noel Mudalige”had surrendered himself to the CCD.Authorities having contacted the Australian HC in Colombo had arranged to fly out Noel Mudalige.Accordingly Noel Mudalige was accompanied by the Australian high commissioner to the airport.Noel Mudalige will take flight No UL314 to Jakarta leaving at 7.40am.Although some persons with vested interests tried to make a big issue out of it,GOSL had acted in a very responsible manner.I am sure that the Australian HC will vouch for it.

Kick the bastard out and don’t allow him back. We don’t need all these trouble makers.
You story does say he “SURROUNDED to the police?
satyendra has like all brainless Tamils jumped to the conclusion that there was an arrest. He probably does not understand English and if he did he will see that the man had SURRENDERED and therefor not ARRESTED. Shady Tamil people go out on drug deals and maybe he was involved in homosexual activity and sis not want his frustrated wife to know.
Take it easy guys. After all there were almost 10.000 people killed between 1971 and 1989. This man is still alive. In my opinion they should have attached him to a ant-hill and left him to rot there. Australian or not.

I wrote yesterday that he will be deported soon, and everything will die off. it has happened much faster than I thought or predicted. The Geneva resolution has some effect on the US citizens. So when the AHC intervened, some were peeing in their jungies. lol. Australian HC is a lady and not a threatening figure or personality. Now all can focus on the Tamil prisoners by the thousands who have been arrested and no cases/charges filed for several years. These are all Sri Lankan citizens except one Irish Sri Lankan, with a Singapore PR. He has been in Boosa for 5 years, and his business in Singapore all ruined. Justice will prevail one day.
