Guti Kemata Niyamithai: Attacking The ‘Diplomat Of The Year’ And Our Foreign Service

By Karu Jayasuriya

Karu Jayasuriya MP

Karu Jayasuriya MP

The physical assault by Sajin Vass Gunawardena, MP is a clear reflection on the country’s tragic situation. This is the first ever time since Independence that a parliamentarian has resorted to such demeaning behaviour- attacking a diplomat who was on a State-related visit to another country. The matter is even worse in that, the attacker happens to be the Monitoring MP of the Ministry of External Affairs.

Sri Lanka inaugurated her foreign service on October 1, 1949. Although there have been many criticisms and fault-finding with our Foreign Service and those who handle it, never was theresuch a blatantly despicable incident. This is total collapse of our Foreign Service and its handlers. Out of 49 diplomatic positions created by this regime no less than 35 have been filled up by stooges of the regime who have chosen to treat Foreign Service like a tool for own social and financial advancement. The only credential that is required is blind loyalty to those who govern.

Even the victim in this particular incident happens to be a political appointee. Even though we might have very legitimate and credible misgivings about Chris Nonis, we believe that he made an attempt to advance the cause of Sri Lanka as a diplomat. Although it looked utterlypolitically-motivated, Nonis could be classified as a person who tried to ‘do his job’.  ‘The Diplomat’ magazine once named Chris Nonis as the ‘diplomat of the year’. He was capable of achieving that singular honor from amongst 164 diplomats in Great Britain. It is indeed a rare honour for a Sri Lankan. It is such a person that has fallen prey to his own indecent political masters.

Chris Nonis

What is even more humorous is the way in which the masters of Nonis reacted to this tragic incident. Instead of holding an impartial inquiry about an incident in which a loyal supporter ofthe Government was manhandled in a foreign land, the regime has decided to investigate some unfounded allegations made by the Secretary of the Ministry of External Affairs. As in all otherinstances, the accuser has ended up being the victim and convicted.

Our emphatic appeal the Government is to hold an impartial inquiry into this shameful incident that has brought utter disgrace to our Foreign Service. The incident had taken place where there were well-known witnesses present. That alone should enable the Government to hold a clear and impartial investigation. But the question is whether the President of the land is willing and able to hold such an impartial inquiry at all.

There have been many reports in the media about Sajin Vass Gunawardena, whose name has been involved in this dishonorable episode. The media has exposed the way in which Gunawardena has squandered millions of rupees under the pretext of uplifting the country’s image in the international marketplace. But no investigation has been held nor have any questions been raised by the governing quarters. It is well known that, although there is alegitimate Minster of External Affairs, it is Sajin Vass who controls the Ministry and its mechanics. While taking the controlling switch into his grasp, this person has been behaving as if the Ministry of External Affairs is his personal heritage. If this is the way this Government is treating our Foreign Service, then God save our Foreign Service!

When I heard about this incident, I was immediately reminded of a stage play that is currently being enacted on city stages- “Bound for assault” (Guti Kemata niyamithai) It is quite apt to saythat the entire country is on the verge of an assault by the Government.  Sajin Vass has given advance publicity to that ominous prediction.

well said Karu J., the diplomatic corps downfall began from 1977 and it went into the gutters with the present regime with serial killing retired army officers and presidential cousins and all other back lickers of the Rajapaksas were made DiploMUTTs.

This is a real bad precedent and god knows how a future UNP govt is going to revere this rot.

a real sad situation for the country and its people.

gods sake please tell guys like Ranil/Sajith/Mangala/Ravi etc., at least top the infighting now as the need of the hour is to ship the Medamulana rogues into

i would like to see the day Meeharaka Rajapakshe being beaten since all these miseries are being made possible by his approval.

Once Beliaththa Criminal/Thug would never be normal – though people are hallozinated by his poplaristic stage expressions. But whether the same folks can ever be cheated this way the question I repeatedly ask

I say Sri Lankan people are easily fooled. Look at the article above. After all that ramblings he goes “our emphatic appeal the Government is to hold an impartial inquiry”, why? If you know this government has not and will never hold an impartial inquiry what is the point in asking for one? Is it just to say you did so?

This is typical of many Sri Lankans. They all agree that MR is a sheit-bag. But they keep hoping he’ll suddenly start being good some day. All agree his corny politicians are corrupt as hell. But they keep voting for them hoping they’ll do better next time.

The lunacy seems to have no bounds. This is like watching a pack of hyenas bringing down a majestic wilder-beast. Yes it is heart wrenching but all we can do is hope the victim will realize its potential and fight back. But in the back of our minds we know that is never going to happen.

This is just the start- Ambassadors.
Next time, they will go with Parliamentarians that vehemently go against their radical rasacal priniciples.
Hit and win is the Rajapakshe working strategy. If would not agree will be punished by using their kind of physical assualts.

Dr. Nonis should consider joining the opposition at once.

Help the people to kick The Clan out of Colombo for good.

I believe Dr. Nonis was trying to help the country he loves. Not Meglomania of the Clan.

Reset your sail Dr. Nonis. Join the people and not their enemies.

Disfunctional UNP & disorganized opposition needs the kind of skills you pocess.

    Cheers!

Nonis is not the angel you suspect, he was in it to promote macwoods tea. I am not defending Sajin but let’s not make Nonis a saint.

        Robert R.

Promoting Mackwoods tea since 1841 invariably help Promoting Sri Lanka tea to the world, and the sales abroad helps increase our Foreign Exchange revenue.

If Promoting Tea by the Ambassador in England is bad, then it’s also bad to Promote and sell Tea by the Ambassador in USA.
What is bad for Goose is bad for gander also. Hope it make sense.

Also if you could look into the following as to how an ex.Trico wharf clerk and an ex.convict with Jail term becoming the EA Monitoring Ministry personal acquiring the following.

        Seven (7) Helicopters.
100 room Luxury Hotel in Pasikuda.
15 Room Luxury Mansion in Colombo 7.
        79 Room Resort in Maldives.
Fleet of Benz, Jagurs and many other luxury vehicles.
23 Room Mansion in Melbourne, Australia.
        16 Apartments in Sydney Australia.
A vineyard in Borossa Valley- Australia.
“Black Caviar” Race Horse in Australia…..etc,etc.

        Robert R.
Could you explain how an ex.Trico Wharf Clerk became EAM accumulated this much of wealth.
Mackwoods have been in Business promoting and selling Sri Lanka Tea since 1841 and I don’t think even they are this rich today as much as this ex.Trico Wharf clerk and a notorious Ex.Convict became EAM personal.

        Robert R.
We are waiting for your answers.

Also please let us know if the final PSC report will be that Dr.Chris Nonis “Hit himself to his own head and Butt” and got injured himself after drinking world famous Blue Label Whisky in NY.

        Waiting for your answers.

the answers to your question is already in my first comment:

          “I am not defending Sajin”

One being a criminal (Sajin) does not automatically make the other (Nonis) a saint.

Same logic you apply is applied by regime supporters

“If you criticize the regime, you must be a LTTE supporter”

My comment was directed to Ben who was calling Nonis to join the opposition making him sound some sort of martyr when he is not. The world already knows of Sajin and his criminality.

I really dont have you baby boy to make aware of all these, but google will help you further. Good luck. But very aware, you guys would never get it even if your lovely ones would have been raped and made disspeared by Rajapakshes or their goons working for their criminal agendas.

Can you remember ,him telling the world, that the unruly thuggish protests by the government thugs during CGOM was by the Sri lankan people.thereby he made us look like thugs and demeaned us in the eyes of the world.
All the thugs in the country are in the government. This does not mean ,Sri Lankans are thugs. You sleep with dogs and will obviously wake up with ticks.

            kakka,
Thugs or not they are SL people. People who protest in UK with Parayabakaran photos and Elam flags are terrorists and terrorist supporters. Are they not citizens of UK?

I would rather join UK tamils if Rajapakshes intentionally destroy our country. If facts and figures are miles away from the average people, how would they decide aaginst Rajas. Just having seen rds and developments one cant make any decisions. As increasing numbers grasp it today – there are significant numbers thre that dont want Rajapakshe to rule our nation. They have looted almost everything to this day.

“Dr. Nonis should consider joining the opposition at once.”

      Why?

“I believe Dr. Nonis was trying to help the country he loves. Not Meglomania of the Clan.”

He was trying to please the clan, thats all to him.

“Disfunctional UNP & disorganized opposition needs the kind of skills you pocess.”

He didn’t even have the kind of basic self defense skills to defend himself leave alone saving the opposition from its own self destruction.

On the one hand you have this burning desire to cleanse the country and get rid of the corrupt on the other you still want to transfer the cronies to the opposition.

You can’t have the cake and eat it. Seriously what exactly you want for the country?

You led us to believe you are not a hypocrite.

We want wise, honest and capable people to run this country, not the cronies who dishonestly denied war crimes and in the process got hammered by another crony.

These are the very people who deny the wise, honest and capable people the opportunity to sincerely serve the country in interest of ordinary people.

He might end up wrecking the opposition further.

        1

        Native,

I see your point. I understand your scepticism as well.

However, I hope dearly Dr. Nonis has learnt a lesson. I believe in giving people a second chance.

Therefore he should be welcome to the opposition, if he has the guts to do so.

By demanding everyone be so perfect we shoot ourselves in the foot. Nobody is perfect. Everyone has a past.

Repent honestly and you are welcome. Applies to all LTTE monkeys as well. That is my policy.

Let us not take our eye off target. Which is dismantling the dictatorship in Colombo. A puritanical loyalty to squeaky clean perfection of everyone is not our goal.

Let us fight with the ammunition we got. Nonis could be placed in the aresenal.

We have a country to build from scratch. Once the tyrannical family, cronies & henchmen run away from Colombo.

Forget dogma. Be reasonable. Forgive. Move on.

        Cheers!

well now that the SL foreign service has gone to the gutters I see no harm in proposing that K A Sumanasekera be rewarded for his slavish loyalty and be made the next SL High Commissioner to the UK as he has all the ‘right qualities’ for the job ;-)

      Peace Lover

Thanks for proposing K A Sumanasekera for the ceremonial post of High Commissioner to his former colonial power.

I have no doubt in his ability to perform his duties to the utter most satisfaction. However I am only concerned about his motor mouth, a gift to make enemies out of friends.

Now he should learn how to properly greet the queen, a neck bow from the head only. A man accustomed to prostration will learn it in no time.

Who knows, one day he might get to meet Vellala Prime Minister in waiting.

I also have faith in monitoring MP’s abilities.

Everybody is talking about inquires and investigations. At least Dr. Nonis is silent about inquires for he knows very well how the inquires are conducted in this land with a culture of 2500 years. He has been a voracious defender of Sri Lankan Goverment and cannot ask for an independent inquiry by UN. He also knows the abilities of Prof. Pole In Mud Peris. Why can’t the other Ministers at least request President to offer Sajin a post of BOUNCER IN A MATHATA. THITHA BAR.

    Karu J,
just words, words and words. Without expressing your views on CT, why cant the likes of you and Ranil bring it up in parliament. Have you forgotten you being the #2 of UNP also crossed over and joined the govt ? Will it be wrong to say it was for nothing but for selfish reasons? Where is your loyalty and integrity?

You along with Ranil, Mangala etal can still save teh country and the UNP, if you can get your acts together. You talking about such events and giving luke warm suggestions on CT is useless. Cant you demand a parliamentary investigation into the assets and the source from which Sajin amassed such wealth ?

UNP needs dynamic leadership, not holding a candle for persons merely because their father was a strong UNPer. Let each one earn their position due to their contribution. IN this respect hats off for Harin. The others aspiring for senior positions (sajith P) are time servers and opportunists. I wont be surprised if he crosses over and gets a ministerial post with the Rajapakse regime.

The day you bring the assault and demand that Sajin Vaas declares his assets and source of that wealth in parliament, the public will know you mean what you say.

    • 2
      1

moda putha has made some wise suggestions. Yes Mr Jayasuriya, why don’t you and your party DEMAND that Sajin and his like are thoroughly investigated and brought to justice for any misdemeanours they are found guilty of. It is all well and good to write a piece for CT, but you and your party are best placed to ensure that the call is made in the public forum in SL and in parliament.

Please don’t tell us that you are scared that Sajin is going to ‘sort’ you out at one of the tamasha’s you’ll attend together. That is what your security detail should take care of.

Moda Putha, you have hit the nail on the head. The UNP has no speakers.Except a handful the rest are as crooked as the present lot. Except a few they are as bad killers as the present lot.

WE NEED A NEW PARTY. Throw the UNP, the SLFP, the LSSP, the CP. the MEP and the JHU to the dogs. The UNP and the SLFP is willing to compromise with the BBS> They are all …. eating pigs

    Hello there Karu Jayasuriya,

Following is a list of things that Sajin Vass apparently owns. This is copied from others who comment here.

When opportunities like this present itself, why are you folks napping?

Take this list to the people my friend. Ask them to imagine what others are making if this sprat is pilfering this much from the tax payer.

Run a contest where people imagine what others are pilfering if Vass is stealing this much. Get people to think about corruption and how it affects their back pocket.

We need to use the sentense that ” hey we are now in 21st century” not only for technial revolution but also change of the prevailing laws enabling country citzenry to more democratic values. If a referendum of SWiss KIND would be called, people would at once agree that it should be – that the politicians declare their assets before them being elected.
This can work perfect if the authorities would stick to the law.

Why has LEADER sofar failed to reform the law related issues in the country ? Today if an inspection would be held to ascertain how the current ruling politicians collected their sums, incl. the man who was once said to be bitten by COBRA while being questioned about his billions:

Since the folks were beaten by a long held civil war, we cant put the blame on the previous leaders but today –
If Rajakpakshe really wanted this countrybecome a hub, they could long work on the areas of Law and order –
what blocks him introducing reforms if he can abuse the Executive office for his own interests like for example having 18 Amd PASSED

              You are dead right buddy.

With the money being abused by Raja family and goons can give a life for the poor that make up the majority of this country.

This is crystal clear. This i why I truly belive only Trotja remained to save the nation is Ranil since he has no records of having abused anyones sums: He has to learn MORE not tonly to be genuine but also somehow cunning – but he needs backing.

Electing good natured man to lead the country is the responsiblity of the people – in order to see this real, we need to work collectively as a common opposition (JVP, UNP, CBK UPFA, and DP, MUSLIMs and TNA all should workd together)

Thank you Karu for a very sensible statement. Although people still accuse of supporting the government at a crucial point in our history I appreciate the stand you took to support our forces to defeat the LTTE. In my opinion you should be appreciated for that not condemned.

so you believe Karu crossed the floor to support “defeating LTTE” ? this is a typical foolish myth that has been circulating among the “ignorant” masses , Karu was the culprit who initiated this pseudo notion of ” strengthening MR hands ” BS , he didn’t stop there , he took almost 3 dozens of opportunistic , greedy , corrupt UNP MPs along with him , have you ever wondered what was the real reason behind karu’s disgraceful homecoming ? ask Basil , he will be in a position to give you the real reason !

PS : Though Karu has many many skeletons in the cupboard , he has not been accused of financial irregularities or killing his opponents , for that he deserves some respect .

Oh I say, Professor Gammy needed an urgent toilet break when he heard the news. The man has been running scared of The Monitor ever since Vassy came to the EAM. Always on good behaviour; yes sir no sir shall I bend now sir. The truth is that all those who would be decent have been cowed down by this thug who rules over them. Shaynooki nookie nookie (the forever virgin) is the apple of his eye. He wanted to win big brownie points in her book, so after a few glasses of ‘hittapan machang’ he reverted to streetfighter mode, and pattas! Dr No’s chheks turned blue and his balls went bang.

NO, Professor won’t resign because he cannot be without the perks that go with the title and the chance to hob-nob with great and the good. He will just keep his head down and wait until the time is right to jump sides and join the next government.

Mr. Jayasuriya has the credibility of a [Edited out]. Yes, I said it!

He was one who crossed over to the govt under the pretext that Ranil was being a dictator. Now, he is trying to make us believe he is a reformed, better informed man? When he clearly explains to all of us what made him change his mind, a second time, perhaps we might be inclined to believe at least a portion of his story.

Until then, he is no different from the other good-for-nothings, who pretend to be MP’s, enjoy the perks, and ARE NOT DOING THEIR JOB.

Why are these questions NOT being raised in parliament? Can’t the UNP run a national contest with appropriate prizes to name the richest person in each electorate? Your guess will be as good as mine, as to who will be on top. Use the public’s knowledge to reveal the TRUTH. Is the UNP afraid who might end up being exposed???? Sometimes, the truth can be very painful.

Instead of doing his job, Karu is writing articles to inform us that HE IS AWARE AND AWAKE. You have been asleep all this time?

Mr. Jayasuriya your self-promotion is so apparent, being an advertising man, you should be able to come up with a better strategy.

What can expect from those in parliament today : more than 50% MPs do not have GCSE
More than 35% of do not A/Ls . Only 20% got degree
Of course you do not need a degree to become MP and yet you need some logical and rational understanding to debate and do something for the country
Why people choose these idiots and let them pay the price for that
Most of these idiots are scoops of MR
They destroyed political culture of this land

As per the last impeachment procedure “Paliament is Uthareethara”. If so all the opposition MPs in the Parliament should demand a public inquiry and question the Monitoring MP, the Secretary and GLP, similar to a Senate Committee inquiry usually held in the US. I am sure there will be government MPs also who would vote for such a motion if presented to the Parliament by the opposition MPs.

Thank you Mr.Karu Jayasuriya for bringing us this news letter. It is good to see people like you standing up for justice.

But what we herd was it is this same thug SVG that pelted stones at your party leader Ranil’s car in somewhere Matara last year, but he neither made a Police complain nor bring action against this thug.

Therefore it is due to weakness of your own Party Leader Ranil, that Rajapakse government thugs have taken a upper hand. Please tell your boss not to have anymore Black coffee chit chats with thugs who initiate violence in the country.
Let his keep everything official and to have more “Black Coffee” with ordinary people and to seek solutions for their grievences.

At the moment it is mostly JVP AKD that is doing a wonderful job of revealing all the Rajapakse Government corruptions to the world, but not the UNP.

Therefore Mr.Jayasuriya, please in call for a special parliamentary scession on this incident and bring justice to the victim Dr.Chris Nonis.

We CT readers are watching you and UNP.

    Mr. Karu Jayasooriya:

UNP also has a prominent MP who $ 3.0 million from LTTE-supporter Rajarathnam.

$ 3.0 million cannot be a political donation. Even if it is a political donation, that much money can not be considered a donation.

Why UNP leadership did not take any action on that matter ?

    UNP is full of thieves.

My point when and if they come they do the same thing.

( for the benefit of our Sinhala Buddhist Dalits, he is an ageing pop star of the nineties, who doesn’t get many gigs in cool capitals of the Diaspora Lands nowadays.)

And this bag man for the the UNP Christian Faction is trying to encourage the Elite to watch “Guti Kemata Niyamithai”..

Our Colombo Elite , and the Anglicans won’t go there even if it is free.

Dear Karu Jayasuriya: I could not help having a aloud laugh after reading your article regarding this episode of Dr. Nonis and MP Sajin Vass. You and specially your “National Leader” Ranil W knew this MP Sjin’s background from the time he(Sajin) wanted to join UNP. At that time what did Ranil W told him? Let me remind you. Ranil said: “Go and clear your name and come”.

Say that is a “forgotten” matter. Bud did you “ALL”, not know, in the Official Opposition that this Monitoring MP signed some “Agreements with some Public Lobbying Cos. in USA in the capacity of “Monitoring MP of External Affairs” and giving a address at “9/2 Dudley Senanayake Mawatha, Colomb8” as the “Official Address”? in which address neither a Government Ministry nor a Government Establishment is housed therein? This happened NOT SO LONG AGO; but in June this year. This was revealed in details by the Sunday Times.

Did you know about this deal? Haven’t you all even read this revelations in the public domain? Have you, any single of you, even your “worthy” National Leader raised this matter in Parliament and cared to question the very Minister of External Affairs? NO and “KEPT MUM” to this date. Now you wake up from a “deep sleep” and try to join the band wagon to gain publicity. This is the type of “Leadership” you want to give and capture power to rule the country. My foot!

Jim softy has raised a very relevant question. When you and most favored by your “National Leader” knew that the MP Ravi Karunanayake was charged in courts for “exchange violations” in accepting $3.00 millions from Raj Rajaratnam, now serving a jail term in USA found guilty in one of the biggest “insider trading” rackets; why you ALL demand that he (MP Ravi) too clear his name and come? This case came up in courts (in Sri Lanka) recently an ex Govt. servant divulged how a “telephone conversation” between the two (MP and Raj) was recorded and wanted to produce that as evidence. so will see more interesting details in the next hearing date.

In the meantime this man Raj Rajaratnam is now facing another court case in USA for “financing LTTE a Terrorist Outfit” banned in USA.

See what your and your MP’s friends are? and what transactions that are being carried out. In my opinion, don’t you think that this is much more worse than Dr. Nonis and Sajin’c episode?

Judging by what you and your party “Big Wigs” behavior and utterances, I would boldly say: “GUTI KEMATA NIYATHAI” in the near future.

IT proves, there are NO HUMAN RIGHTS in Sri Lanka. UNHRC is right. This is the way the country, THE President and its kerum karaya treat its ambassador to UK, then what chance is there for any average citizen, ethnic minorities, demonstrators, opposition, down and out undertrodden people, females, children to get parity in law, justice and respect. It is a country ruled by ogres, totally uncivilized, living in stone age.

UNP walked out of parliament when Shiraniee was being dismissed by Wimal! Did they oppose that? Didn’t they impeach Amirthalingam?

So far, Kshenuka made a complain. Did Chris Norris made a complain in whether NYC, London or in Colombo?

If it is Chanthula, will the UNP would ask for an inquiry? Partiality! They discounted the poor woman as a SLFP crossover’s daughter.

Here the mistake is with Chris and Kshenuka. Chanthula complained to King. So, he was holding Silva and told Chanthula to give him a blast on his cheek. The case was settled.

Here Kshenuka did not complain to King, she complained to Sajin the Kudu Vase. Unlike a devotional Catholic, Chris refused show the other cheek(not swollen by the beat of Vase) to Kshenuka, when king asked for. Instead, he handed over pension letter for retirement. Here, not just the King, even nobody can do anything with kind of behavior.

recruitment of elite offspring to the Foreign Service outside the competitive exam process , unfairly deprives bright products of our free education system from entry to these posts.
why don’t the varsity students unions or teachers union file a fundamental rights case regarding this unequal treatment?

Karu, good time you came back to unp. Or else you also would have got slapped and kicked. Sleep with dogs and get up with fleas.

Karu even your strongest critics appreciate that you are an honest politician. Had you not joined the government you would have been our President. I still believe that you would have sincerely thought that supporting the Government to defeat the tigers was the right thing to do but that was a very bad political decision.
However you are a rare politician who can be trusted and that is why you should be the common candidate and defeat Mahinda. Only you can get the Sinhala Buddhist votes. Then you can do justice to all these hooligans.

Karu is shedding crocodile tears for Nonis, Nonis must be regretting now the error of making this slap incidence a controversy, nobody will be surprised if Nonis will apologize to Sajin and then falls at the feet of Prez to reinstate him as HC in UK.

Karu you should understand that all you useless UNPers have no value in the eyes of the public whatever hue and cry you all try to make, what do you care if Nonis got slapped, neither Nonis nor the slap he received represent the SL foreign policy, there is always someone vying for these luxurious postings.

Cleo if you have nothing proper to say please don’t say it at all. Learn to appreciate a good stand taken by whoever. Karu your statement is appreciated but you’ll must get together and defeat Mahinda mama otherwise the country will be finished. Unfortunately your leader seems uninterested.
The UNP backbenchers are not taking a stand. Your only hope is a common candidate.
Time is running out but the Harsha Desilva’s, Eran Wickremarathne’s are keeping quiet. The UVA star is now going on a different track and is demonstrating that he is a very imatured politician.
You need to give leadership otherwise Mahinda will win again.
