Hamber Dates: A Racial Slur Now Has A Price Tag In Sri Lanka During Ramadan

At least thanks to Cargills, ingrained racism in Sri Lanka now has a price tag. 1kg of ‘Hamber’ dates costs Rs. 547. Surely, the ‘lowest price’ for the defamation of a community, ‘on your way home’, writes the Groundivews.

We were surprised to see, especially during Ramadan, ‘Humber’ dates for sale at Cargills Food City, which on the bill of sale comes up as ‘Hamber’ dates. We are told these dates are on sale at a number of Cargills Food City supermarkets across Colombo, and bought ours at the outlet down Duplication Road, the Groundviews said. The term hambaya and its variant hamba, in Sinhalese, is a well-known and highly derogatory term referring to Muslims

The word ‘Hamba’ or ‘හම්බ’ certainly smacks of a racist slur. It’s been used enough of times in recent hate campaigns by the Bodu Bala Sena and affiliated groups to bring it permanently out of the rather murky folds of history it had retreated to, giving way to the more civilized slur (if such a thing exists) ‘Thambiya’ , writes Abdul Halik .

“For one thing the spellings, ‘Humber’ smacks more of an English Lord than a coastal Moor. The ‘er’ at the end brings it. A packager’s attempt at adding some refinement to the brand perhaps? completely failing due to a lack of cultural awareness or utter ignorance? Or a sinister attempt at a subtle disguise and fallback? And Cargills hedging and dodging the matter could be a simple case of PR paralysis. Sri Lanka isn’t alien to those,” Abdul Halik wrote in his Blog Going Global .

When the Vikalpa.org called the Cargills seeking a clarification for the usage of the word ‘Humber’, but no clear answer was given. Listen here.

In the video below you can hear a Buddhist monk was making racist remarks against Muslims and Tamils. The Buddhist monk who threatened police officers and used ‘Sudda Sinhala filth’ including the word ‘Hambaya’ . The monk was identified as Kirulapona Nanda.

July – Many Reasons To Keep Calling It “Bloody & Black”
By Kusal Perera – Waking up to a misty, cold morning on Monday 25th July, I listened to the day’s first “Thevava” (තේවාව) of Dalada Maligawa, the pinnacle of Buddhism in this “Land of Gauthama Buddha”. Looking down at the Kandy town from the front garden space of “Satyodaya” on Pushpadana hillock, the town was seen […]

Racial hatred springs from bigots who are born losers, simply because they can’t take it, that the muslim man takes good care of his family no matter what,& you have to agree that if you take a survey , you will always find Muslims on the top when it comes to; sobriety, piety, hospitality &generosity ….. which generally provides this mostly Merchant community with a better competitive edge over the rest … and without envying them the others should adopt their virtues , instead it has become a modern day sickness of the heart of many, who are just waiting to see something related to any terror act so as to rush to demonize the whole community at large , I remembered a special Quote from The Noble Buddha ;he said there is none who is not blamed, the good is blamed and also the bad ,,,,, how true.. Prejudices die hard! if one has a sickness in body or even a mental illness it can either be controlled or cured ,but the sickness of the heart there is no cure ..

People in our country must realize when our ancestors were in men’s G string & women roaming about toples some in the jungle and some in the paddy fields it is the ancestors of this community who brought trade to our Island , with them also came the Silk and satin ,which may have also prompted to change the dress code of our ancestors to more modestly , are it is they who thought us trade and now that you have learnt , you want to subdue them because you can not compete with them & want to use your majority in numbers to traumatize the whole peaceful community who have stood by you for so long? what ungrateful wretches are you bunch? total losers ,, and above all that also lie without batting an eyelid about their sacred book when you know nothing about it & besides you yourselves do not practice what is mentioned in your books? what losers …

THE HOME OF BUDDHISM,THE BUDDHISTS ARE ONLY 1.9 PER CENT–WHY???????

IN ARABIA THE HOME OF ISLAM, MUSLIMS ARE 100 PER CENT

FURTHER ISLAM IS THE FASTEST GROWING RELIGION IN THE WORLD

YOU CAN KILL ALL THE MUSLIMS IN SRI LANKA, BREAK ALL MOSQUES AND STILL THERE WILL BE 2 BILLION MUSLIMS.

THE PROBLEM WITH BUDDHISTS IS THAT THEY ARE NOMINAL NOT PRACTICING
THE RELIGION TAUGHT BY THE BUDDHA

    HOW ABOUT THIS?
38 dogs ruthlessly poisoned for government Wesak celebrations
(Lanka-e-News -24.May.2013, 2.00PM) Dog biting man is known widely. Man biting dog is rare . But here in SL is a case where a group is doing a worse thing even than biting a dog – they are bestial humans deliberately killing dogs – and mind you that is in Wesak season !!

The Wesak celebration that is being held under the auspices of Medamulana MaRa had caused the death of 38 dogs by poisoning, according to reports. This year the Government Wesak celebrations are being held at the Butthala Yudhaganawa Raja maha Vihara . Since the dogs that are in the Buttala Town can be a hindrance to the Wesak celebrations , by mixing meat with poison , they have been made to eat and die.

Just yesterday alone 38 dogs were found dead in the Buttala Town and its environs following the consumption of poisoned meat. The Buttala municipal council had cleared their decayed carcasses.

During the discussions in connection with the Buttala Wesak celebrations by the government , it had been pointed out the dogs roaming the streets in Buttala town can be a hindrance . Based on a decision to rid this menace , this killing could have taken place . To groups for whom killing humans is simple, killing dogs is simpler even during Wesak.

Among the dogs killed there were those which were pets and had owners . The latter therefore are cursing the heartless killers who committed these acts considered as most evil and a sin specially during the Wesak season .

This is too much of a hype and instigation.

Forget its brand name. Humber or Humbar if its real bumper and of quality, go for it.

That part of Old Moor Street that carry 2-digit numbers (29 in this case) borders the Dam Street end in the vicinity of the Hultsdorp Courts Complex. This is the original market for push Bicycles in the Pettah. There were at least 3 major importers and distributors of bicycles in that area. I suspect someone in this packer of Dates may have chosen the name of the popular British bicycle traded around for his brand name of Dates – in all innocence. Surely, no
trader will brand his product in a name that will be derogatory to his intended customer base. Nothing further should be attached to this issue except, hopefully, the Packer should consider changing to a different name in these very sensitive times.

I fully agree Senguts also the receipt printed on Cargills is because they take it from the label of the product and feed it into the POS (point of sale) saoftware ,here too errors in spelling happens as many data entry chaps are not good in the english language and or underpaid too

I say its a mountain out of a molehill here !

Take it easy, But cargils should correct this mistake. I think SL English problem. It may be “Hamper” for gift. It become “Sinhlish” to read HUMBER but Cargils quality control is responsible for this type of mistakes.

Senhuttavan has already said it.That is what I wanted to say.As a young boy I had a Humber bicycle. My father had a BSA.I argued that n my “Humber” was better than father’s. The leading brand was Releigh and Humber was almost second, as I remember. They were sold at Cargills or Millers, if I remeber correct. Another brand was Rudge, condemned at the cyclr repair shop for axle wear and tare. Wasn’t there a Motor Car also called Humber? which was highly rated and by a few elites.
One should concentrate on the quality of dates. In date producing countries each claims its dates are superior to others. It may somebody wanted to resurrect these old memories to sell dates in the competitive climate.Nothing more. The controversy may have been even raised by a supplier of another brand of dates to the market.
There is a Sinhala saying that if one utters the word ‘King” once the woman with that thing whose name starts with:”Kim..” gets upset.Isn’t this a case like that?
