Putting her ‘plan B’ into action, UPFA Western Provincial Councillor and daughter of slain SLFP stalwart Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra – Hirunika announced her decision to support the common candidate Maithripala Sirisena a short while ago.
Speaking at a media briefing at the Opposition Leader’s Office in Colombo, Hirunika said it was a decision she made on her own and stressed that she was not in anyway forced or encouraged into it by any member of the Opposition.
In 2011, Hirunika speaking to the media in reference to fighting for justice for her father’s murder said, “I will never allow this crime to go unpunished. I am hoping the judicial system in this country to deliver justice to my family but if not I have a plan B and I am ready to deploy it.”
“My father was murdered in broad daylight like an animal but until now, not a single perpetrator linked to my father’s murder has been brought to justice. Recently, Dematagoda Chaminda – the man who shot my father attempted to intimidate me with a group of about 40 thugs while I was meeting some of my supporters in Kolonnawa. If this is how justice is delivered upon us, just think how the rule of law must be enforced with concern to the common man?” she questioned.
She said that a top member of the government who came to meet her after learning of her decision to support Maithripala, had told that her leaving would only mean that her father’s murderers would walk away scott-free.
Meanwhile she thanked former president Chandrika Kumaratunga for supporting her decision and added that she will give her full backing to ensure the victory of Maithripala Sirisena as he is a disciplined leader, with a good vision and a true patriot.

There were many short comings in Bhartha Lakshman Premachandra’s (BLP) character.
However, I would not call him a thug. Then you categorize the poor man with Mervin, Malaka, Julampitiye Amare, Rattaran and et al.
There was a time Kollonawa was terrorized by Mallimarachchi. BLP had the balls to stand up to one of UNP’s notorious men at that time.
True. BLP also used violence, but often on behalf of the under privileged and the weak in the area. In their defense. Appalling? Yes. Then again Sri Lanka is not a nation where rule of law works.
Further, BLP did not make money out of politics as far as I know.
BLP was no racist either. He stood up for Muslims in particular. Who were chased away from the East and elsewhere by the LTTE. He resettled many in Kolonnawa area, I heard. As a result local Muslim population has exploded around there.

Adjoining is the longest road dematagoda – so it was ideal to relocate a few there with relatives at hand close by isn’t it?? not really an explosion but a necessity (if you go a few years back, there was nationalist influx that killed all those indian tamils (govt., police etc) and the sihala started dripping in from kegalle etc, like hemantha that is the route they took from 48.
