Honour Our Trust, Your Excellency Maithripala Sirisena

By Janakie Abeywardane – Shanthi Sachithanandam – Prema GamageChristine PereraVisakha Tillekeratne

The very moment we are penning this letter, you are being sworn in as the 6th Executive President of Sri Lanka. We congratulate you and wish you all the very best to you as you are poised to walk through an avenue of challenges.

This rocky path of yours is signposted with “a program to be completed in 100 days”, which consists of abolishing the 18th amendment, amending the constitution to reduce most of the executive powers of the Presidency and its associated immunity, and, the setting up of a number of good governance mechanisms such as the independent commissions for the Police, constitution, bribery, elections and the judiciary.

We look forward to seeing the other major policies and pledges you have made in your manifesto entitled “Maithri palanayak, sthavara ratak” (a rule with loving kindness, a stable country). Women of this country, particularly in the conflict affected areas, plantations and migrant workers, need a lot of “maithri” as we have seen nothing but cruelty in the form of violence, discrimination and disregard for them. We have read accounts of your family life – that of being a loving husband and an affectionate father. We would like to see these qualities in your mode of governance. We would also like to feel the benefits of sound policies that would bring light into the lives of a cruelly violated people. You have outlined very solid policies which will impact on the quality of life such as education, health, nutrition, food security and economic development. We eagerly anticipate the restoration of values and systems together with the allocation of resources that will result in reducing violence against women and protection for children. Most importantly, the protection of the environment is also detailed in your manifesto.

At this point let us remind ourselves of the vote share in this Presidential election that brought you into power. The overall lead you obtained was 449,072 votes over your main opponent. In the North and East, not counting the Sinhala majority constituencies of Ampara and Seruwila (where your opponent won), you have been given a total lead of 740,251 votes in all the Tamil and Muslim majority constituencies. If not for these votes, you would have lost by 291,179 votes. This is not taking in to account the votes you received from the Tamil and Muslim people in all the constituencies outside of the North and East. In fact you won every constituency with a large margin where they were a majority. As an elected leader this places a big responsibility on your shoulders. We are confident that you would not prove, as the previous presidents have regrettably done, that Tamils and Muslims may decide the winner but nothing more.

During the run up to the election, the Tamil and Muslim people could not help but notice that their aspirations were not addressed by either of the main opponents due to the apparent fear that it might lead to the erosion of votes from the Sinhala Buddhist constituencies of the South. Despite the humiliation faced by the minorities for being treated as aliens in this country who would not be acceptable to the majority Sinhala people, they voted for you. They did so because they understood that their aspirations are intrinsically linked to the democratization process in Sri Lanka intended by your government. They voted for democracy.

How are you going to respond to this clear mandate?

Establishing democracy cannot be a piecemeal job. Good governance is nothing other than sharing of political power. Merely changing the nature of the executive presidential system does not assure democracy and equality for all. If this approach is not adopted, your leadership will remain an autocracy for the non-Sinhala ethnic groups and, in fullness of time, for the Sinhala Buddhists too, as we have seen very much under the last regime.

You need not look far. There is no need to reinvent the wheel. In the past 6 decades history of our country many consultations and negotiations have taken place. From among them, you may take the constitutional proposals presented in Parliament by Madam Chandrika Bandaranaike in the year 2000. All that you have mentioned in your manifesto may see the light of day only if you start by making the 2000 Draft Constitution the basis to create a State structure where all ethnic groups are equal and political power is shared among them. Challenging as it may be, you have to reverse the high levels of militarization not only in the North and East, but in all parts of the country; you will have to roll back illegal acquisitions of land, not only in the North and East, but all over the country.

In order to address this, you have an important duty to bring the Sinhala Buddhist people of this country from the Dutugemunu era to the 21 century; to bring them to accept that political structures for sharing power is the norm today and is in fact beneficial to the development of Sri Lanka as a modern country. This requires that you bring the Sinhala Buddhist majority of this country aboard on a common path towards democracy, that you convince them democracy will not threaten Buddhism. That common path shall ensure racial and religious amity and protect all religions. This expectation is the core of the Muslim and Christian vote for you. These are the communities who have been attacked by Buddhist racist groups over and over again.

The quality of your leadership matters in facing all these challenges. Your personal conduct will be scrutinized and followed very closely. Therefore it is our earnest desire to see you governing as an individual free from nepotism and corruption. We also hope that you will refrain from an autocratic style of rule, and maintain a participatory and consultative approach. We hope that all the deliberations you will have in the coming weeks and months will include civil society representatives from all communities.

Dear President, you will discover as the trappings of power engulf you, that you will be surrounded by suckers and wrong doers. We hope you will rise above them. And that you will make special efforts to be constantly accessible to the people and all those who voted you in. From today we will be your constructive opposition and will be watching over every step you take.

Look at this…! Who is the Editor of Daily Noise now?

President Maithripala Sirisena is a true son of the soil – a son of a humble farmer from the rice bowl of the North Central Province. The overwhelming mandate he received from all four corners of the island proves beyond any doubt that his vision for the future, centred on a Maithri Palanaya (Compassionate Governance) resonated broadly with the ordinary masses.

With the election of Maithripala Sirisena as President, we have a great opportunity to rectify these colossal mistakes and steer the country on the correct path. His 100 day programme for a Maithri era is a blueprint for bringing the entire country together on a journey of prosperity.

Clear mandate? Yes… 55% of Sinhalese Buddhist (70%) rejected MS, only 45% SB voted for him. To achieve the clear mandate, according to you, that is 51.28%, 66% of non-Buddhist (30%) voted for MS. Author discuss about this…

WOW… You mean, Sinhala Buddhists are the only Sri Lankans? Shall we give the North, East and Central, along with Colombo to the non-Sinhala Buddhists? Then, we can invite BBS to rule the SB country!!!

If EX-President is seeking SB votes then why he brought a duplicate MY3 with him to the poling station and in the contest? Is it not a cheating by him towards the BS?

“55% of Sinhalese Buddhist (70%) rejected MS, only 45% SB voted for him”

        Why?

        That was the MaRa plan.

Tell lies, Shut up and kill reporters and media. Only MaRa stores allowed.

Prevent Common Candidate holding meetings. Attack meeting and people. destroy stages. Put fear on people, and prevent them from voting, Scare them with scare tactics.

They were controlling the information. Remember Galileo, the Sun Going around the Earth, the Church Giardano Bruno etc.

If it was a normal and well informed populace, Mr. Mitripala Sirisena would have got 65 to 70% with Sinhala Buddhists voting for him 65/35.

I read the Daily News editorial in the morning. I know that Rajpal wrote it. I was not shocked. Because I knew all along Rajpal was a political prostitute. This editorial was really telling Maithri, “I will do anything, give you anything you want. Just tell me, I will do it. From back side front side oral anything you want. Please just don’t throw me out”.

Medamulana MaRa manipulated the Media and information and used state resources to MaRas advantage. Had the people known the extent of corruption and the use of State Resources and Sinhala Buddhists, much less than the 55% of the Sinhala Buddhists who Voted for Mr. MaRa would not have voted for him. Those Sinhala Buddhists who were informed, like those Buddhists in the Urban areas, voted for Mr. Matripala Sirisena. Overall, about 45% of Sinhala Buddhists, 3, 873, 764 Voted for Mr. Maitrpala Sirisena, whereas 4,734,601 voted for Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa, most ill informed and deceived by Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa. If not for the deception, Mr. Mairipala Siridsena wouls have got 65% of the Sinhala Buddhist votes, instead of the 45% he got.

So, the Sinhala Buddhists need to be told what they have not been told, an as to how Mr.. Mahinda Rajapaksa Dictatorship manipulated.

The People of Sri Lanka are now on the correct path, not on the path of Medamulana MaRa path of family dictatorship, Family Hegemony, Shills, cronyism, crime, abuse of state power, abuse of law and order and a multiple of other abuses. Making corrections on this takes time, and even if the Hon.President Mr. Maitripala Sirisena may get delayed have patience, because he is on the correct path.

Yes I read the Lankasri website.

The stinking mouth of the Medamulana Marauders should be shut for good.

One way of doing that is to immediately initiate criminal inquiries into the criminal activities of MR, GR, BR, NR, and all those relatives who held high position in Government, not forgetting the henchmen and lickspittles Mohan Peiris Cabraal et al. The rest of the proceedings will follow strictly in accordance with the principles of maithriya and the law. The criminals will be incarcerated until investigations are completed and jail times fully served.

War crimes tribunal need to be established, military needs to be withdrawn and a political solution needs to discussed with TNA. Hard it may sound but is very important for reconciliation and for the country to move forward. After all Tamil speaking people want to live with respect and integrity. If my3 alliance fails, then the victims of war just like the victims of corruption, nepotism and thuggery requested the international help to get rid of MaRa, will request the international community to hold a referendum like in Canada and UK.

Good article from empowered women who have no bias but the wellfare of the nation.
I am a keen follower of this website.
I strongly believe that we people cannot place all the responsibility on the politicians, especially to correct what has goen wrong in Srilanka over many years.
Let it begin with each and every one of us. By being tolerent empathic and keeping an open mind we can usher in the golden future along with the leaders. When we chage our attitudes from ego centerdness to loving compassion, this will influence the people around us.
As Kennedy said ‘Don’t ask what the country can do for you, but what you can do for the country’
We don’t expect our mothers to always be giving and making it comfortable for us, We realise there are duties and as sons and daughters we perform it. Why then always ask what our motherland can do for us and not think what we can contribute for a change.

Why do they mention the Dutugemunu era? Dutugemunu fought a foreigner who happened to be a Tamil and won. But he honoured his vanquished foe, Elara by erecting a tomb in Anuradhapura at which riders had to dismount and pay their respects. Sadly the location of that tomb is unknown today. Elara is also known as a just king. Remember the history lessons where it was said that he punished his own son for riding over a calf? It was mentioned that the calf’s mother went and rang a bell set up to inform Elara of any injustice done in his kingdom. The king is reported to have investigated and found out the truth and meted out justice.
Oh I forgot, history was taken off the school curricular by one government.

Elelasinghan alias “Elara” was a tamil.
      He was not a foreigner.
So were Theva Nampiya Theesan a.k.a “devanampiyatissa”, and his father Moothasivan a.k.a “muttasiva”.

Very nice article. To my surprise Champika Ranawaka mentioned in a media briefing after the election saying that it was not the Tamil and Muslim votes that helped Mithree. This article clearly explains the facts.

What Maithree should do as a first step is to proclaim that the National Anthem could be sung in any of the three languages Sinhala,Tamil or English. All the voters are Sri Lankans and they should have the absolute right to sing the national anthem in a language they understand. Otherwise there is no point in singing the national anthem in a language which one does not understand.

Clear mandate, yes definitely. Is it not 51.28% Sri Lankans who voted for MS. Or seeing it your way, is it wrong that 66% non Buddhist put their faith in a Sinhalese Buddhist leader.

The new President must study well the reasons of Mahinda Rajapaksa s downfall, his fall was because of the foll:

His brothers, his children, his relations planted all over at state expense, here and abroad,

The BBS and all anti minority groups, going on rampage trampling on peoples rights,

Tresspassing on peoples properties,as if it is theirs
So please do not do the same things and create your downfall. .

    KAMAL SENANAYAKE.

In the earliest version of the Mahavamsa Elhara is referred to as the Just King.A few centuries later he becomes the Just Tamil King.Later on it is Tamil King;Eventually,he is referred as the Tamil Invader. All this reflects the Authors mindset during that period when it is recorded.Historians do not treat the Mahavamsa as an authentic document. It came under critical review by Prof;Geiger.Dutugemunu had as his chief warriors SENA and GUTTIKA,BOTH Tamils:Similarly,Elhara who ruled from Anuradhapura had Sinhala soldiers on his side.A battle, which was essentially between a Crown Prince[DUTUGEMUNU] AND kING Elhara came to be portrayed as a Sinhala-Tamil battle. To this day it is the Mahavamsa that has caused Ethnic tensions.Sinhala politicians like MR use this to their advantage and in the process thoroughly disorient the minds of the Sinhala audience.I would not be surprised if Prabaharan will be treated as a Folk Hero and all sorts of eulogy about his heroism is written When you read the history recorded by someone that someone must be examined. There is invariably BIAS and therefore it should not be taken as the Gospel Truth. The MAHAVAMSA has done the damage.

For those who appear not to have realized it, this election was for the President of Sri Lanka – not for a representative of the Sinhala-Buddhists. All citizens have a right to vote and MS is now the President of all Sri Lankans. Those who voted for him treasure the values that he has promised to give us after all these years of being dragged through the dirt – and at a time when we had nearly lost all hope of ever recovering these values in our polity. Just imagine what the country would have been like after another 8 years of MR!
In this context, the discussion on which community voted for him is totally irrelevant since the values that he espouses are universal.

“reversing high levels of militarisation, and reversing illegal acquisitions of land” – will be a tough proposition for the new government of Maithripala Sirisena.
The military get the largest chunk of national income in every annual budget at the expense of even education and health care.
Already the president is quoted as having said that the military will not be withdrawn from the north and east.
If he continues the militarisation of the northeast with its attendant evils of suppression and oppression of the very citizens who voted en bloc for him, while half the Sinhalese voted against him, he will be no better than Mahinda Rajapakse.

A very identical section of the Sri Lankan Society, the Tamils are not in the verge of congratulating the Current President Sirisena because they did not vote for Sirisena with the intention of his success but to defeat Rajapaksa and they did it. The Muslims too played a part in it.
While analysing the casted votes, out of the 22 Electorates, 11 electorates won by Rajapaksa and 11 by Sirisena. However in the Four electorates of Jaffna, Batticaloa, Trincomalee and Vanni, Rajapaksa received only 216,648 votes against Sirisena getting 776,405 votes. The part played by the Tamils and Muslims in this election gave Sirisena a victory. Therefore, the Tamils are aware the stand taken by majority of the Sinhala population. The Tamils are not interested as to who becomes the President or the Prime Minister as they have suffered immensely for the last 70 years of racial hatred and violence, killings and rape and loss of property. The insurrection by the LTTE should be owned by the majority Sinhalese because they were and are the cause for it. The victory against the LTTE should have been an honorary victory instead, girls who surrendered were raped and killed and over 40,000 civilians were massacred in the war. Sons and daughters of the Tamil people are still missing. Can the Tamil people forget it. Definitely not until and unless the present government do justice towards the Tamil people, first by removing the occupying army and next devolve powers to the Tamil community. Bring peace and prosperity to the long suffering Tamil people and they will join the present government in the development of the whole country. The crime committed by the former regime against the Tamil people should be investigated and punished, if found guilty. The crimes against humanity should not go unpunished.

“We hope that all the deliberations you will have in the coming weeks and months will include civil society representatives from all communities.” I would add another two words for this sentence and it should read as ” We hope that all the deliberations you will have in the coming weeks and months will include civil society representatives INCLUDING WOMEN from all communities.

Civil society comprises of the women who wrote the article and other strong women who want justice and equality for all citizens, irrespective of gender, class, ethnicity and religion.
In addition to all the advice ( constitutional reforms etc) given by these activists we can include the following:
    – do not let your sons and daughters behave like the sons of Rajapakse, SB or Mervyn. Do not give them any power. If they misbehave in public, please do not go to rescue them.
    – Please ensure that your simple life style continues BOTH IN PRIVATE AND IN PUBLIC.
    – Please don’t patronise 200 rupee appakades and take expensive hotels when you go abroad for conferences. Please do not take a plane load of persons when you go abroad.
    – Show your appreciation to people by genuinely working for them and not hug babies and the elderly women. Any way I heard that babies are chosen before hand for his hugs. MR hugs babies and deprive them of their nutrition. Please MS provide them with what they need and not
    – I heard you are a very rich person in Polonnaruwa and please do not be greedy for more. Your brother is extremely rich and in fact he was criticised for manipulating the rice market. Now that you are in power, please do not help your siblings
    – Please stick to your promise and do not go for the second term.
    – Finally people who supported you expect “BIG DEALS”, please be aware.

History can be twisted in different ways
I am told that Dutugemunu got his name from tamil language
Dutu actually came from ‘thutta’ because he was said to be a very wicked person
I am also told that he was in the prime of his adult life and challenged ellara who was an aging king
And lastly, there is even a possibility that dutugemunu was tamil
Sinhala language did exist during his era
Dutugemunu father was called Kaakavanna theesan (due to his dark skin like a crow) which goes against the ‘aryan’ thing.

A great contribution, Ladies, and what a boost for the 2nd of the MDG’s set for fruition this year!

Obviously, the starting point should be a revised, inclusive constitution, where all citizens are held equal before the Rule of Law; where minority rights are guaranteed and protected; where everyone is SRI LANKAN first, Sinhala-,Tamil-, English-speaking second.

As for the citizens at large, every effort must be made by its inhabitants, the silent majority in particular, to foster mutual respect and acceptance among the different culture groups. Translations of progressive, forward-looking contributions from writers, the press, artists and others, should be made available in all languages.

Religion should not be allowed to be further politicized. Instead of being the bane of civil society, it should be a boon to promote greater love and tolerance among the people.

In short, Sri Lankans should start nation-building in earnest, and prove to the world that it is NOT a land where ‘every prospect pleases, and only man is vile.”

    Blessings.

    EVP,
Trouble is, if they are all prosecuted in true…..debonair Western fashion,…….. where will be the proof that the country has been robbed?

With the $67 billion dollar Lankan economy that grew 7% last year and is the fasted economy of South Asia, the new Gosl will be mad to go on a rampage against the potentiality of these former moneymakers.

The potentiality of especially the tourist industry to payoff all loans to foreign countries gives positive projections.

Any opening up of familial accounts will show that familial accounts were actually ministries with investment accounts set for country development.

New Gosl will grow very well on the foundations of the old Gosl, and in fact need them around, and will do well to pamper them somewhat for sake of preservation.

Thank you Plato and the others for your input. You certainly provided something to think about. But would anyone of you know where Elara’s tomb is. Or is this not the forum for it?

    KAMAL.

I am glad you are interested.Prof:Siriweera Prof:History wrote an essay under the title The Dutugemunu-Elhara episode and which was published by the Social Scientists Association somewhere in 1984.Dutugemunu in victory had honoured Elhara who was defeated in single battle.Apparently both sides did not want casualties.Hence the straight fight.Probably, the tomb of Elhara must be in the backgarden of the present quarters of the Medical officer of Health at Apura. I am sure Dutugemunu honoured a JUST KING.

    Dear Native Vedda,

I don’t think that I am qualified to call myself one. Trying to follow his teachings to the best of my abilities. these teachings are from all the faiths, and the beauty is that they all say the same thing. Sathya (truth) Dharma (right Conduct),Shanthi(peace) Prema (Love-which is universal.unconditional and Divine) Ahimsa(non-violence)
These human values are the ones that will bring true Peace to the individual, to the family, communities, nation and eventually the world.
As I strongly believe, everyone of us has a moral ethical duty to bring peace to Mother Lanka and it has to begin which each one of us.
If we truely put this into practice, Srilanka would become a heaven on earth and a becon of light for the rest of the world to follow.
The President and the Prime minister took their oath on the 9th to serve the country and let us also take the oath that we would use LOVE as our point of reference In our THOUGHTS,SPEECH AND ACTION and not FEAR, which has caused so much destruction.
As Gandhiji said BE THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE.

“The Prime reason for the defeat in the Presidential Election is caused by the Vote banks of the Tamils from North, East and from the Upcountry, therefore, I cannot accept this defeat, which has been caused by the Tamils by voting against me. Therefore, I am not at all accepting this as a defeat. Even now the Power has not gone out of Sinhalese from the government. Because of my defeat, the Tamil community is not going to get any benefit at all”.

Exactly you consider Tamils and Muslims are aliens and not part of Sri Lanka and you have the hard line concept this is country belonging to the Sinhala Buddhists. That is exactly you are implying from your statement.

You would have become president this time too had if you would have given away the N&E as a separate entity. In your body and mind you treat N&E as a separate entity and why do you want to hold on to these people committing extreme cruelty. Let them go on their own and find their life. You do not want them they are not part of you then why do you need to hold on to them.

Let them go and if you have had the courage of your conviction and done this you would have been the President of this part of the land elected by the people you love and not thrown out by the aliens you hate and thus denied the chance you to serve the people you like.
