Honourable Rathana Imports Brand New Toyota Land Cruiser, Despite Being Vocal On Anti-Austerity And Poverty

Parliamentarian Athuraliye Rathana Thero who is very vocal on anti-austerity and poverty has imported a brand new Toyota Land Cruiser from Japan under the tax concessionary terms evading total tax revenue of rupees tens of millions.

The customs declaration form which is in possession of the Colombo Telegraph shows, the total tax waived off for Rathana Thero’s brand new Toyota Land Cruiser is approximately Rs. 33.5 million on the vehicle.

According to Sri Lanka’s pioneering MP Monitoring Website (Manthri.lk) JHU – UNFGG National list MP Rathana Thero has only participated 7 times in parliament and shows poor performance.athuraliye-rathana-theros-brand-new-toyota-land-cruiserathuraliye-rathana-theros-brand-new-toyota-land-cruisermanthri-lk-rank-athuraliye-rathana-thero

Meanwhile in a letter addressed to the Director General of Customs, lawyer and rights activist Nagananda Kodituwakku in a letter dated November 10, 2016 accused the Director General of intentionally violating the Constitutional rights conferred in all citizens in terms of Article 14A (1) (b) of the Constitution and Section 3 of the Right to Information Act No 12 of 2016 and also the provisions of Section 6 Paragraph XLVII of Volume II of the Establishment Code – to obtain the said information helped with the office of the Director General of Customs.

Kodituwakku accused the Director General of Customs that he had not only violated the public trust placed in his office, but had abused his office to protect the interest of dishonest politicians, while also helping them in unjust enrichment by defrauding the government revenue.

At least 77 MPs in Parliament have used their duty free permits to purchase luxury vehicles in 2016 alone, which has resulted in the country losing billions of rupees in revenue.

Most of the vehicles that have been imported have been Toyota Land Cruisers, Hummers, BMW’s and Mercedes Benz. In July, Kodituwakku told the Supreme Court that the MPs instantly make as much as Rs. 25 million for each permit they sold, which they receive free of charge from the government.

After coming to power, the Maithripala Sirisena – Ranil Wickremesinghe led administration, having appraised the colossal losses sustained under the Mahinda Rajapaksa administration, in its first budget presented in the parliament on November 20, 2015 declared that government had incurred a heavy loss of over 40 billion rupees on tax free car permits, therefore the administration proposed to abolish all such permits altogether including the permits issued to MPs which was openly abused by them.

However, few months later, the same Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake who presented the initial fiscal policy statement made a U turn and made an order (published in the Gazette (No 1965/2 of 02nd May 2016) under Sec 3C of Excise (Special Provisions) Act exempting levies on motor vehicles imported by MPs with CIF value up to US $ 62,500/. However, as required by the law to protect the government revenue, there was no condition whatsoever imposed against the abuse of such permits, allowing MPs to sell their permits in the open market.

He is a serious card carrying member of the Jathika Hela Urumaya party, an active politician, and parliamentarian hence Athuraliye Rathana Thero does not have to adhere to Buddhism nor stick to any principles.

Monk is in a hurry to attain Nirvana. Please let him have a luxurious jeep to attain that.

Easiest way to become rich quickly is to get into a saffron robe and mislead the deaf and dumb devotees.

Look at rhe 500,000 sq ft 5 storied building opposite Bishops College Auditorium built by a monk!!

Look at the perks enjoyed by the monk on the Lanka Hospitals PLC board of directors!!

Look at monk MP getting a Rs 25!m bonanza through the duty free permit

Hope these monks are atleast paying taxes!!

It is ok since the monks are the guardians of Budhism. This is a tiny perk for their colloidal responsibility. Forguardianship of the Sinhalese. TheSpirit is willing, but the flesh is weak. It is quite normal.

The people of Sri Lanka should refuse to pay all income taxes to the corrupt government and STATE as a protest against corrupt politician and the prevailing political culture of stinking corruption and impunity for financial crimes in the country today!

Citizens for Good Governance should launch an anti-income tax movement in Sri Lanka and encourage everyone to stop paying income tax to the corrupt STATE, until the corrupt Politicians start paying their taxes!

        Charity begins at home!

We do not need Buddhist Priests, in this Day and Age, to save the Sinhalese People.

We need good Buddhist Monks, Who Practise the Buddha’s Dhamma and can set an Example to Lay People.

People have enough good books to learn the True Dhamma from!

Sinhala/Buddhism represented by these saffron clad thugs and crooks in and out of parliament has already killed “Buddhism” as we knew it.

I suggest you join BJP, RSS, RSS (Sri Lanka), ISIS, Born again Christians, … and take necessary action to expunge “Buddhism” if that is what you want.

Now that the monks have taken to luxury living, why not cater their every need, with designer clothes (in multi colours, Rathu Patte, Nil Patte, Kola Patte … to suit their party affiliation), momk swimsuit, monk grooming parlours, monk essentials, monkbag as opposed to manbag, designer Paduka shoes (made out of timber), ……. monkwear, monk shaver (electric) …. momnk taser, saffron monk wine, …. monk lighter, …. play monk magazines, ….

Lets find some designers, …. investors, ….

Child Abuse by a Monk in Habaraduwa

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yNSC93mPs4I

      Uploaded on May 29, 2010
She sent her grandson to school with the idea of providing him with proper education to make him a good person. The Buddhist monk in charge of the temple asked her to send the child to the temple and she sent him there because they were poor. There was no possibility for them to pay the money for tuition fees. That was the reason why they sent the boy to the temple school. When the child began to refuse going to the temple school so adamantly, grandmother had to look for the reason. It was then only that she discovered that the child who was sent to learn good behavior, ethics and Buddha’s Dharma from the monk had in fact been abused by the monk.

“He is using his entitlement as an MP. There is nothing wrong with it.So why this fuss??”

Buddhist monks are strictly prohibited from indulging in luxurious life style.

He can use his entitlement if he renounce his monk hood and disrobe himself.

He can’t have the cake and eat it.

      The vehicle price is $62,500.

Where did he find the funds to pay for such a large investment?

If he sells his permit he would gain several million rupees. What is he going to do with the surplus cash?

By the way, you should learn the rules (Vinaya) that governs monk’s life style. The rules are clear yet simple. Buddhist monks are allowed to possess only 8 items:

      1. an inner robe,
      2. an outer robe,
      3. an additional robe to protect from the elements when necessary,
      4. a bowl,
      5. a water-strainer,
      6. a razor to shave his head,
      7. a needle and thread and
      8. any necessary approved medicine.

The list does not include a luxury car.

He is an MP and must live like all other MPs. According to you he should not be an MP, if he is allowed only the 8 items you have listed. Once he loses his Parliament seat then he will revert back to his priesthood and live accordingly. Till then let him enjoy his life as an MP.

The yellow robe gives them some respectability and impose responsibility, a symbol of wisdom, service to the lay (teaching, medicine, …), frugality, and example of moral living, ……

Many of us have no problem if he renounced his monk hood, worn Aryan Amude, driven a Ferrari, had as many as partners he could satisfy, ……….. indulged in hedonistic life style.

He can’t have the cake and eat it too.

        Native.,
It is fair to assume that ven Rathana may be thinking that he cannot go on the Arya Ashtangika Marga in a Maruti car.

What has been obtained by this conquest of Dharma creates affection. Through spiritual education in the noble eight fold path of Sila (morality), Samadhi (Meditation), Panna (insight or wisdom), man becomes liberated from ignorance, craving and sorrow. He achieves supreme enlightenment (Samma-Sambodhi) and transcends his separate limited individuality and overcome the sounds of birth and death and gets the supreme silence.

Well, Athuraliye Rathanaya is after all another of those Sri Lankan politicians. A supreme con artist. A fraudster in saffron robes. How easily the Sri Lankan Buddhist is taken in.

33 million rupee windfall for a man who did not contest the elections.

A 33 million rupee pay check for attending 7 parliamentary sessions.

When Brother Prince become Janathipathi he will nationalise anything the trading company JHU has now.

Champika will have to give away his duty free under wear imported from China with CEB’s trip switches. Only way to avoid is to undercut Ranil and become SLFP Prime Minister soon.

When they come back Port City, Hambantota Harbor, Matale Airport, Nuraicholai, CEB… everything will be nationalised.

While the Salawa armory was on fire and the properties of innocent folks in and around that camp were being totally destroyed the Yahapalana government wanted to buy duty-free vehicles for all MPs. Everyone including media was against it and the authorities pretended that they would not go ahead with the idea since they too felt sorry about the Salawa people.
Recently the poor folks who were affected by the fire staged several protests since the government has so far failed to pay compensation that these people are rightfully entitled to. However, now we can see Mercedes Benz, Toyota Land cruisers, BMWs, and also a Hummer have arrived in Sri Lanka to serve the ‘hardworking’ PM, Ministers, and MPs of the Diyavanna Palace complex. All these luxury cars are ‘gas-guzzlers’ and the innocent tax-payers have to pay not only the initial cost but the ongoing recurrent cost too.
Thanks to CT; we saw Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake’s luxury Mercedes Benz and Venerable Athuraliye Ratana’s Toyota LCruiser. I am just curious if these men and women have any idea of what they are doing. Do they know the meaning of the word ‘shame’? The order paper clearly shows these shameless hypocrites ordered these vehicles just after the Salawa fire! Whom are they trying to fool?

one way of collecting funds for reelection in Sri lanka is use the duty free car permits and import a car and sell it. Earlier it was just a luxury car. Now, it is a four whell drive SUV. This is how they have set up the corrupt system to suit them.

Instead people should ask the govt to change the way they collect funds for election. Funds should be collected only by the party and not by every individual.

Do all the minister’s declare the profits made on sale of car permits in their tax returns and pay tax on profits? The IRS needs to check this as these ill gotten income is not tax free. The minister’s are not exempt from income tax on bribes and other income. Has the finance minister paid tax on his. IRS must do a tax audit on all ministers and charge heavy penalties on ministers like all other citizens.
