How Did Sajith Premadasa Amass So Much Wealth? Petition Seeks To Clarify

A petition against Minister of Housing and Construction and MP of Hambantota Sajith Premadasa‘s accumulated wealth has been finalized to be submitted for investigation by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC).

Sajith Premadasa

Sajith Premadasa

Minister Sajith Premadasa’s recent spending habits and doling of massive amounts in cash donations to temples has raised suspicion as to how he had accumulated such wealth despite being a mere politician. The petition is also been made to investigate those that may gifted monies to Minister Sajith Premadasa over the years.

According to public knowledge his father the late President Ranasinghe Premadasa was a career politician who did not amass wealth prior to his murder on the 1st of May 1993 .

Before entering into politics the former President’s only business dealings were to have sold a traditional sweetmeat as a street vendor called lavaria during his youthful days.

A group of lawyers, retired politicians and concerned citizens have now convened to compile a dossier of information pertaining to the mass of wealth acquired by the current Housing and Construction Minister Sajith Premadasa and will be submitted to the Bribery Commission for investigation shortly.

It is still to be established if these monies now lavishly been spent are black monies that belonged to his late father or if they are the ill gotten wealth that Minister Sajth Premadasa has acquired since entering into politics in 1994.

Colombo Telegraph reliably learns that there are many other petitions currently being compiled for submission regarding other politicians currently in service.

A spokesman for the collective said that they were awaiting the application of the Right To Information bill, in order to further pursue their investigation. “We are waiting till it properly gets underway so that it would be mandated by law to provide the public with how this man found so much money to doll out,” he said. His dad, the crook, the nut, the killer would have funded via bribes.
At least he found a way for his son to get a dingiree to cover up his pedigree.

Like the father, like the son.

It is known, by those juniors serving in the finance ministry at the time of President Premadasa’s death, they counted the cash stacked in sacks in Sucharitha. When late R. Premadasa was the minister of housing and he got no official money from finance minister Ronnie De Mel, he had other means of getting the money for the housing projects. Every body, whether Premadasa or Rajapakse they had some syphoning of donations received like the “Help in Hambantota”. Any one who has photographed “Carlton” of Tangalle before and after the rise of Rajapakse will bear testimony as to what was going on. All of them, the motto is to earn for seven generations.

It is well known that late Gamini Dissanayake in his talk outlining his strategy for improvement of cricket in Sri Lanka, on of his main planks was to see to that cricketers playing for Sri Lanka should be able to get wealth for seven generations. So this business of “හත් මුතු පරම්පරාවට හම්බ කිරීම” is very common and I am not trying to white wash young Sajith who cannot be any different.

It is in this context that the late Lee Kuan Yew, in his vision for corrupt free Singapore, ensured that politicians and civil servants got really good salaries and the PM of Singapore is the highest paid on the vicinity. In deference to public wishes about the extra-ordinary salaries, Premier Lee Hsien Loong reduced a little bit of the salaries of politicians but not the civil servants. Here we try to achieve the independence of so many things through independent commissions but they too are ridden we poverty to the extent that they cannot be independent. Look at what Lee Kuan Yew did for Singapore and any honest fellow who has won the trust of the people to govern Sri Lanka can get a good idea as to what has to be done for our country.

President Premadasa, born to a poor family in Keselwatta, Colombo, left an estate of Rs. 240 Million when he passed away.
This was in the media at that time.

If that is true, then it is just 0.25 Billions. But Rajaakshes have abused it to upto 20 OR more billions. Why the people make no noices about that yet ?

It is just Premadasa s efforts did not end up the war.

          But Rajaakshe s.

And Rajapakshe turned to be power intoxicated dictator no second to Gadafi by end 2014.

Power greediness ended up him with deliberately making high losses tothe state (tax payers ).
Those billions alleged to have been abused are real sums
But for some politicals reasons, not yet have been exposed.
Times will reveal all these is my wish.

A sincere comment but how it could be achieved? Honesty & dedication are the organs of Ethics.
Then Rule of Law need to be respected or properly implemented at all levels. Impunity must be erased at inner circle. Can it be done or will it ever implement in Sri Lanka?
Have you ever seen these principles followed in Sri Lanka? As long as segregations exist honesty is buried. Merits are forgotten Sri Lanka is way behind of Ethical improvement.

I would like to respond to the last paragraph of your comment.

There were better times. Say in the history of post independent Sri Lanka the period between 1948-1972. Not that it was perfect but much better in terms of governance and propriety. I would again like to highlight the case where a woman in Anuradhapura wrote to the IGP somewhere in 1965, that her son had not come home for holidays as anticipated and that she does not trust the Anuradhapura Police. Out came the famous Kalattawa murder case. The most influential had to pay the supreme price. Now! If a woman were to complain that her son was missing the woman may be missing in 24 hours!.

Once it has gone from bad to worse the general feeling is that it is difficult to resurrect and is near impossible.

This is why it had been repeatedly mentioned that the underlying root for corruption is our Constitution. Present Constitution gives unnecessary powers to the legislators. Legislators should be confined to policy making and not ‘managing’ the affairs of the state. The Management powers should be vested with statutory bodies which again should be protected from parliamentary powers. It is such isolation of higher levels of powers but answerable only to the judiciary process that will wean away the corrupt practices. R2P act can bring back all the loots.

President Premadasa was not born to a poor family in Keselwatta. His father owned a fleet of rickshaws and he was known in the area as Ranasinghe Mudalali.

RPs father also had a small Hotel adjoining the then St. Sebastian Lane (Later Suchchritha Mawatha) in which Ranasinghe Mudalali’s residence too was. RP set-up the Suchchritha Samajaya which was his initial step to enter politics. An evening school for boys and girls too was established. The whole property originally belonged to a Bora businessman. He joined A.E. Goonesighe’s Labour Party and unsuccessfully contested the St. Sebastian Ward in the first Colombo Municipal elections held after independence. The winner Harry de Silva together with the Mayor one De Mel, the then Deputy Mayor and another Member (May be Mr. Ghani) were deprived of their seats being found guilty of bribery by the Thalgodapitiya Commission. In the bye-election for the St. Sebastian Ward the UNP fielded W.A.D. Ramanayake. RP contested on the Labour Party and won it and later joined the UNP. He was representing the St. Sebastian Ward till he became the Deputy Mayor and lost the next election to the Communist Party candidate L.W. Panditha and missed the opportunity of becoming the Mayor.

To investigate Sajith is good. But how about all the others, present cabinet ministers and past. And once investigated what then? Remember how the last Chairperson of CIABOK was forced to resign by threats from non other than the President himself, just for doing her job.

I for one will not be holding my breath. Nothing will come out of these investigations.

For a brief period of time we had members of landed wealthy families coming into politics who had no reason to rob anything. Just a genuine desire to give back something to the less fortunate. Then came the jealousy brigade that smashed to bits these families tearing down everything they did mocking them as radalayas. We then replaced these folk with the Premadasas and others of the same ilk. Know nothing nobodies with not a penny to scratch their back sides with. We hailed them as heroes who would champion the cause of the poor man. Lock a poor man in a room full of gold and he will surely help himself to some of it. This is human nature. That never stops the buffoons (Aka Voters) of Sri Lanka from repeating the same error or tragedy over and over again. Whats even more ridiculous is that we love these rogues so much that even when we are confronted with the calosal sums of money they have robbed we never prosecute them but let them go to rob another day.

From where ever it came at least he is now giving it to poor. That is more than we can say for rest.

The rot set in long long time ago most probably after 1972. During most of the 26 years of civil war high level corruption was hidden by the War and Emergency regulations. The corruption continued after 2009 but we could see it happening with civil projects and realize it’s magnitude. The only difference after 2015 there is more freedom to publish articles like this and with the higher degree of transparency and the crimes are being exposed. Not that it has helped to get the crooks behind bars.

In mid 1960’s during late Mr.Dudley Senanayakes tenure late Mr.U.B.Wanninayake as finance minister never abused or misused privileges given to him as I was told his daughters wedding at Kurunegala to go there he hired a vehicle rather than using official vehicle as it was a private function.
When he left the office not a pebble of corruption left behind.

Late Dr.N.M.Perera finace minister under Mrs.B’tenure was seen at peoples Bank union place branch to obtain cheque book.

Late Mr.Anil Munasinghe(Grand nephew of Anagarika Dharmapala) as minister of transport was offered a huge commission for importing buses and train engines by supplier he declined the offer and told the supplier to give it to government treasury.
As minister of transport later chairman of CTB he used cheapest car in Europe a two cylinder Citreon 2CV for his official use.

Do we have these type of ministers now?
To my knowledge never for generations !

I know you do not like me. But here is what I know personally about how Sajith got money.

My brother-in-law was related to Wijetunga when he was PM. W was harassed so much by HemaP without vacating the TT. Anyway when RP was killed so much of ballot boxes filled with money was taken TT to Sucharitha. This is one source of money.

I also know a case where Wijedasa, RP’s CAS secretary’s involvement in selling houses in Colombo 7 occupied by govt servants for RP. Officers were forced by death threats to get the house vacant.
