By Sarath de Alwis –
The Supreme Court has ruled that both, the Election Commission and the President, in his capacity as the Minister of Finance, were responsible for violating voters’ rights by postponing the local government elections. A top official of the Elections Commission on hearing the top Court’s ruling claimed that the Courts’ pronouncement strengthened the Election Commission.
The Daily Mirror reported President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s response with calculated brevity. “While acknowledging that postponing the Local Government elections is a violation of the citizens’ basic rights, President Ranil Wickremesinghe said he does not regret this decision.
The President said he was not remorseful as the time was dedicated to ensuring the people’s right to live and in maintaining their safety.“
“The President made these remarks while addressing the National Conference of the New People’s Front (NPF) at the National Youth Services Council auditorium in Maharagama.
“He explained that if he had devoted the time to conduct the Local Government elections, then achieving economic stability would not have been possible.”
The subject of this very brief missive is ‘Hubris Accumulation. & Nemesis which accompanies it.
Hubris accumulation in leaders suddenly and surprisingly catapulted into high office is the result of Excessive self-confidence and total and utter contempt for alternative points of view.
It is a terrible malaise leading to total detachment from reality. When it happens to leaders in a representative democracy, provided there is an adequate supply of buffoons to say ‘hurrah’ it results in autocratic governance that can be corrected only at the next election.
Hubris Syndrome occurs when someone in a position of power develops a magnified and embellished view of themselves and their capabilities.
Leaders afflicted with hubris syndrome generally respond to reason and logic with an uppity dismissal of ‘up yours’. The people therefore must be ready to tell him ‘up yours ‘ in the first available opportunity. That’s the purpose of the next presidential election.
Hubris inevitably leads to the downfall of those who possess it. That unpreventable, inexorable outcome is known in history as a nemesis. Nemesis is the goddess of retribution and denotes the destruction, suffering or punishment that can follow in the wake of hubris.

“He explained that if he had devoted the time to conduct the Local Government elections, then achieving economic stability would not have been possible.”
RW’s greediness of power and things happening in appointing ministers and buying MPs clearly shows that he will go to any extent to use violence and to rob the votes. This is a very hard time for people of Sri Lanka to escape from this evil.

Ajith,
Evil fully shaved the heads of Sumanthiran PC and Justice CV, took their signature promising the Federal State without the name Federal, and canceled the provincial election. The 2013 PC election was PM Manmohan Singh Alms for Tamils! Sumanthiran made a speech that time “when our new constitution is implemented, Sinhalese will say Tamil Eelam has been granted and Tamils would say “not even Federal State was given”. Because all 9 provinces have to agree, no longer anybody can conduct Provincial elections without 9 provinces agreeing, and the constitution is amended. The problem provinces are not operating, so none of them can legally give consent for anything. Then, about the EP election, for the past 6 months, Evil played all the possible dirty tricks to cancel it. Some even still believe, as usual, UNP will conduct a pogrom near to September 21st, but wouldn’t allow the election. Evil said he was busy with saving the people so he could not conduct LC election. Then why is he not asking the Election Commission to conduct the LC elections immediately after the presidential Election? Remember, whether Valaiththodam Jr wins the election or Anura wins the election, they both have said Parliamentary Election be held as soon as possible, i.e. the parliament would be dissolved on September 22nd. Evil must be made to go to prison, Like Siri Ma O was made!

S-M: Thank you for giving us that link.
I hope that the NPP Government will bring a motion in Parliament to withdraw all the “CIVIC RIGHTS” of all those who have violated the Constitution and those who were found GUILTY by the SC to have caused the country’s economic collapse.
All such ROUGES must be swept out of politics. If not the TYRANNY of the Political Authority cannot be eliminated.

I watched a clip in which a brave young student (17 years) questioning Ranil about the state of educational system and what the state had to do about it. Ranil answered it briefly. Sorry I don’t have the link.
I thought the young person had thought through what he wanted to say and wanted to know.

Shouldn’t the Media question all 38 candidates on the state of education and what they are going to do about it?
TRANSFORMING HIGHER EDUCATION IN SRI LANKA TOWARD A DEVELOPED NATION

Ranil had a few things to say about educational reform.

This bunch of ROGUES who ran this country, without an iota of shame come before the public and tell us where our country is, without realizing that they have proved to be the architects of the collapse of the economy and the deterioration that accompanied it.
Ranil W was once the Miniter of Education, Industries, and Youth Affairs. See how that “Rouge” S.B.Dissanayake once again a Minister of Education occupying a front seat. That “Dr” (from where got that I don’t know.) Susil Premajayantha, shamelessly has been the worst failure in Education. What have got to learn from him? Am I wrong in saying that ALL these “Bastards” must be sent to jail for ruining this country?

I really do not know.
We shouldn’t be blaming just the politicians, look at the academics, especially the ones at Colombo Uni who awarded honorary DSc, LLD to … the crooks, human rights violators, …. just because they won the war, ….. and those people who repeatedly voted for the same bunch of nasties, …. and the same acdemics and professionals who carry their b***s, ….. and the Sangha who felicitate them, …. ..
As people we have problem, in fact we are the problem.

NV: Thanks. I agree with you. I have always spoken of two categories who ruined this country. They are the “Political Aristricrats” and the “Meritrocratic Tyranny”. In the SC verdict, I referred to the then President – MR; Minister of Finance – Basil R. – politicians; and PB J the Secretary to the President; The Governor of the CB – Ajth Navad Cabral and “Four” members of the Monetary Board of the CB; The Secretary to the Treasury – S.R.Attygalle.
Do you see the COMBINATION of Political “Aristocracy” and the “Meritocratic Tyranny” that has ruined the country? They all and many more of such “GANGS” must be removed from society and accommodated them in a prison to rot and die.

S de Alwis, with due respect, not many will understand political hubris and the pride that envelops politicians who feel they are gods and cannot be wrong, especially when ignoring the judiciary. Time is ripe to scrap this executive president who does not come to parliament regularly, but governs online, doing as he pleases. The number of MPs in parliament needs to be reduced and the ongoing robberies must be judged.

The Supreme Court has finally come to its senses, making decisions not under political pressure but according to the rule of law. SL’s plight is mainly due to the judiciary’s wrong decisions (political influence) and the police’s failure. If these two organizations acted according to the rule of law and held a high standard, most of the issues we face in SL would not exist.
I am happy, at least now, especially after Ranil threatened the Judiciary and the Parliament under the present constitution-violating speaker played second fiddle to Ranil. The Judiciary has opened its eyes. Its time the police to open its eyes.
Ranil and the speaker have repeatedly violated the Constitution and human rights. Once a new president takes over, they must be brought before the Supreme Court so that no one else will try these stunts in the future.

Supreme Court has never come to its final senses. We have the most corrupt judiciary in the world. It started with CJ Mr. Sarath N. Silva. CJ Mr. Mohan Peiris desecrated it followed by CJ Mr. P. C. Dep. Present CJ Mr. Jayantha Jayasuriya is following the tide. The entire judicial system is corrupt from CJs down to the minions in the judiciary are incompetent, corrupt and plunderers. All of them have perverted and turned upside down what justice stands for. The one and only duty of the judiciary is the establishment of the truth. They supported criminal gangs and instead crowned blatant lies the corrupt lawyers filed in court.

Contd:
The new President should appoint a commission with the power to file legal action to investigate every action of “Ranil’s Boys,” who are now advisors to Ranil and who were kicked out of politics by the voters. This also should include the advice they have given to Ranil. Although Ravi Karunanayake does not hold a position his advice to Ranil and his actions (visits to Ranil’s home and office) should be investigated.

Buddhist1,
Keep your happiness until 21st of September 2024. RW did not bother about Judiciary. Supreme Court just informed us that was a violation of human rights but nothing to punish RW. Supreme Court at least Punished Sirisena by asking him to pay Rs 100 million for allowing Easter Bombing. Ranil also did the same was not punished for Easter Bombing. Here RW was not punished. It is very obvious he is doing lots of things by misusing his power and Judiciary keep silence. These are all gimmicks by Judiciary to cheat people but indirectly allowing RW to do all the evils.

Let us get something clear.
There was wilful neglect on the part of one person. The other could be accused of being cynical in his approach. But is there evidence of his knowing something of grave consequence and not acting on it?
A court of law can act only on evidence not opinion.
What may seem obvious to you need not seem even likely to others unless you make a well supported argument.

Leonard Jayawardena / August 23, 2024
Let’s state the facts.
Ranil didn’t hold the local government elections under the pretext of not having enough money for it but really because he knew his side would not win. From his stand point it’s perfectly understandable and logical: The money (and time) wasted in spending on local government elections which he was doomed to loose–which have no significant impact on people’s lives any way–could be better spent on uplifting the lives of the people, which WOULD improve his electoral prospects by that much.
As for those clamouring for holding the elections, the majority did so because they thought their side would win and so use that opportunity to display the political strength of their side, not because the local governments would result in appreciably uplifting the lot of the people.
As for the Provincial Councils, the vast majority of the populace of this country think they are white elephants and would be happy to see them abolished.
/
Buddhist1 / August 24, 2024
Leonard,
If Ranil honestly thought having an LG election was a waste of money, he should not appointed such a large number of Ministers and State Ministers. He should not have employed all “his UNP Boys” as advisors, wasting the money. All of them are involved in facilitating bribes through their respective ministers. When a new president is appointed, the actions of these UNP advisors who were kicked out of the parliament by the voters should be thoroughly investigated and, if found guilty, should be taken before a court of law.
/
Ajith / August 24, 2024
What a wonderful argument by LJ. He dismissed LG elections and Provincial Elections are waste of Money but RW also thought that it is waste of Money to have Presidential election and parliamentary elections until 2048. RW needs the same Parliament and President to reach his target. Unless it continues that way, people have to be in que for not only fuel and gas but also for a piece of bread only.
/
SJ / August 25, 2024
“As for the Provincial Councils, the vast majority of the populace of this country think they are white elephants and would be happy to see them abolished.”
Whatever their opinion, there is a law and a constitution. Acting in breach of either is a punishable offence.
If the people do not want something, there is a way to get rid of it.
That has not happened. Until it happens the law should be upheld.
/
SebastianSR / August 27, 2024
When the Supreme Court ruled against JR he got thugs to stone the house of the Judge and more. When the SC went against Mahinda R, he got the Chief Justice removed. In contrast, Ranil has merely given an excuse while implicitly accepting the fault. When the issue of the Provincial Councils was put to this supreme court, it should have desisted from hearing it as the EC is fully empowered to deal with it, and knowing that on giving a judgment, it will be ignored and so it will be diminished in the eye of the public, and made to feel small. It is quite common for supreme courts to recognize that they should only hear politically charged cases only after due consideration, remembering that the court should ensure that it upholds its own honour. This is an example of Hubris on the part of the Judges who need not have taken up such a lost cause as the PCs. Ranil IS correct that if the PC elections were held, there would have been political strife utter instability, and hence the chances of economic recovery and escape from dire hardship threatened. This writer, Sarath de Alwis, has failed to understand the wider picture. To give an extreme example, when Prabhakaran et al assasinated the TULF leaders, and when he was declared a wanted man and murderer by the courts, going for peace talks with him without arresting him would also have been illegal -but that was a necessary step although it failed.

“Nemesis is the goddess of retribution and denotes the destruction, suffering or punishment that can follow in the wake of hubris.” Is it hubris of RW or that of Sinhala Buddhists supremacists?
Holding Elections such as Local Government or Provincial councils would not have been beneficial for the country’s economy during the last few years. We need to have a new Constitution that has been put to Public referendum BEFORE any form of Elections. Provincial Councils are IN-EFFECTIVE without the Land and Police powers.Having a Governor above the Chief Executive of PC is NOT RIGHT.

Elections! The masses are too stupid to vote. They do not how to make an informed decision. They are what ancient Greeks called “idiots”, private persons who did not actively participate in public life or politics. Our idiots do not participate in civic or political life of the country but know only to complain and criticize others. They reminds me of the Churchill’s five minute conversation with an average voter. What we need is a benevolent dictator or a group of dictators who would act to create visible benefits and outcomes for the common good.
/
davidthegood / August 24, 2024
gamaya, why a group of dictators and not a group of benevolent political leaders who genuinely wish to do something useful for the citizens of this nation. Marxism is past and Marx finally fled with his family and ended up in London, the center of capitalism, till he died.

The Russian October Revolution occurred after Marx died. Then the entire colonial system was overthrown, thanks to that revolution.

SJ, you have missed it. God’s plan to save humans from sin was to send Jesus to take all sins down from Adam and Eve’s disobedience, on his body and die instead of letting humans die in sin. Then those who accept the work of Jesus on the cross as he was raised by Jehovah as he was without sin, could ask for the benefit of his eternal covenant they enter into with him. By faith say “I want the benefit of that trade” and be free. Thinking one is god does not help when there is a true God creator Jehovah. Of no use to compete with God, and go to hell at death.

“God’s plan to save humans from sin was to send Jesus to take all sins down from Adam and Eve’s disobedience, on his body and die instead of letting humans die in sin.”
So, what you are saying is that every single person who died before Jesus, including his mother and all the prophets including Moses, are in Hell because they died in sin.
So that makes your favourite country, Israel, totally illegitimate.
DTG, I have told you before. You can be a Christian or a Jew, but not both at the same time.
/
davidthegood / August 26, 2024
old codger, wish you would get your facts right. When Jesus rose from the dead, with him were all the faithful as Mat.27,52 confirms that graves were opened among other miracles. The military Roman Centurian who personally witnessed all this at the site, became a missionary.

old codger, no one can become a jew and I am not a jew. The cross was a trading point. 2 Cor.8,9 =Jesus became poor so I be rich. 2Cor.5,21 = Jesus became sin so we become righteous. Isa.53,5 = By his stripes we are healed. Gal.3,13 = Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law. 1 Pet.1,19 = Redeemed with the blood of Christ. Lot more can follow.
