The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) will inquire into complaints made by the general public on violence related to racial hatred that occurred in Kandy recently.

The HRCSL has announced that initially written information and evidence will be collected from persons affected by the violence and also from any other interested party. According to the notice published on the Commission’s website, ‘written submissions should not exceed three pages and must include the date, place and time of incidents’ as well as names of persons or institutions identified in such submissions. Photographs and videos of incidents could also be included in the submissions, the HRCSL states.
April 21, 2018 has been set as the deadlines for submissions which have to be sent via registered post to the Regional Coordinator, Kandy Regional Office, Human Right Commission, No 8/1 Primrose Road, Kandy.

In this “wonderland” called Sri Lanka, and in this day and age, one still comes across ‘academically’ educated, and supposedly intelligent ‘Buddhists’, but sadly lacking in wisdom, who reverently believe, that the Buddha walked out of his mother’s womb, and walked seven steps, while lotuses blossomed, under his feet!
These very same supposedly educated, and intelligent ‘Buddhists’ also believe, that the enormous indentation, resembling a footprint on a boulder, at Adam’s Peak (Sri Pada to ‘Buddhists’), to be that of the Buddha. This would be in keeping with the conviction that the Buddha, was as tall, or perhaps even taller, than the Avukana Buddha statue, which stands above 40 feet (12 meters) in height!
Then, there is the ‘Dalada Maligawe’ in Kandy; most Buddhists believe, the tooth relic housed within, belonged to the Buddha. Some adorn the ‘tooth casket’ with mounds of gold jewelry, fervently believing, that they would earn merit, to the value of the gold they offer. The thought of donating the value of this gold, to feed and help, the poor, sick and the needy, that would be far more meritorious, never cross their minds!
There hangs a controversial question, over the authenticity of this ‘sacred tooth’. But then again, to those ‘educated and intelligent Buddhists’, devoid of wisdom, if the Buddha, was taller than the Avukana statue, and had a giant footprint, as on Adam’s Peak, then this ‘huge tooth’ could be his!

Why does not the HRCSL go north and investigate the daily “crimes” against Human Rights committed by the military and police against citizens.
Is the HRCSL aware that citizens are deprived of their homes, lands, livelihoods, businesses, places of worship, livestock etc. arbitrarily by state actors who have made them ‘third class’ citizens in their land of birth.
Citizens are shot dead on pretext of maintaining law & order; ancient Buddhist sites are ‘discovered’ in places of worship, business, agriculture, animal husbandry etc.
Buddha statues are erected in sites of existing other religious worship which are also vandalised.
Saffron wearers prevent state personnel from enabling lawful activities.
In the president’s own electorate, cattle belonging to long time breeders are shot dead and pastures ‘captured’ by new encroachers.
Why don’t MPs visit electorates on publicised days to inquire into problems of citizens, instead of visiting other countries.
President Premadasa’s Mobile Presidential Secretariats solved a lot of problems of citizens, earlier.

What was the Human Rights Commission doing during the episodes of the killings of the Sinhalese youth and the Tamils? It is just a technique of white-washing the political elite bent on violence in order to establish hegemonist rule through rousing up Sinhala-Buddhist nationalism. The present Chairman had her roots in the previous commissions and carries their baggage with her. For the good of the country, one hopes a new direction is taken and something meaningful is done by a toothless commission. At least, revealing the truth may have consequences. The ploy is to hide it in the hope that it would go away, as it did in the case of the JVP youth who were killed and dumped on burning tyres. The killings of the Tamils will not go away despite the hiring of some English white Lord who keeps reducing the numbers of those killed.

The affected Muslims mass wants direct legal action. There is no need for a Human Right Violation investigation or Transitional Justice. Every crime scene, Muslim crowd has recorded with cell phones. They have a good database of each every affected place and each every person did it. If there are too many cases to handle, just advertise for volunteer lawyers and judges to handle this. Mix them up with government paid officials to keep the process for government’s standard. There are many ways to do it. Put an honest will and do it. Pay them for the loss of property. If keeping the criminals in prison is expensive, just withdraw their civil rights and order them that they should not attend any political meetings or see a MP or MPC or MLC. Enforce it with strong Law and Order process. This is a political crime and that will teach them the lesson they were seeking.
Paranagama Commission collected the Tamil victims information and handed it over to CID to suppress the claims. UNHRC forced the notorious Paranagama Commission go closed.
So there is no need for the government to start on political marketing from the Muslim property loss.

Before appointing any more useless commissions, bring law and order to the country and order the attorney general’s department, police dept. , justice department, judges, courts, all armed forces to do their duty properly without fear or prejudice.
Stop government politicians from interfering into law and order business and leave them to do their jobs.
It’s the influential political people who always spoil the law makers and bend laws according to their whims and fancies.

We have seen enough of them for far too many years and have no confidence in them at all and all the commission reports are either thrown into the waste paper baskets or collecting dust somewhere.

Thrishu, You have got the wrong end of the stick. The statue in a high mountain in Brazil is a man made one, erected there. Jesus never came on top of that mountain and left his live image there as you perhaps assume. Many such statues of Saints can be seen in Sri lanka road sides and churches, similarly some sculptor may have carved out an image of a foot print on top of Adam’s Peak and obviously another religious fanatic might have spread this yarn and I have heard that the other foot print is in another country. No wonder we are nicknamed as’ sinhalaya modaya’ . But I don’t think Brazilians are so naive as to believe that Jesus stood up there and some one photographed him live.
